This site is currently occupied by the Suncorp Theatre and Public Car park.

(PS The 'Metway' part of the brand name was dumped over 2 years ago)

Quite nice, but not as tall as I was expecting/hoping. 141.1m to top of plant (RL), that makes it just under 120m in actual height.

Looks good. They need to remove the old eyesore beside it (by explosive demolition of course), just keep the clock and place it on the new tower.

Its a bit of a waste of space for only a 120 metre building. A 180 metre would of looked nice there especially with that elevation.

From that 3rd render it would seem that the people living on the South facing side of the tower will have a pretty nice and uninterupted view, can almost see to the Gardens - I suppose that will change when VISION comes along though.

Although an alright design, 120m just seems so underwhelming considering how many 150m+ towers are U/C or proposed at the moment.

Yeah, the backend of 160 ann street is certainly not going to be the most spectacular view of brisbane... Does anyone know why that stupid building doesn't have windows on the sides?!?! There are heritage buildings on either side, it's not going to get built out, what do they do - big concrete wall....

I think this building will emphasis the fact that the mincom building was such a lost opportunity for a standout tall building in the centre of brisbane. even tho mincom is a nice building, it belongs along coronation drive, not in the only skyscraper sancuary in brisbane. :(

look on the bright side. At least they didnt build a 30 story tower there.

With only 7 stories its easily demolished for a larger building.

I just started work on the 16th floor of 160 Ann. The gorgeous view to the North from my work area is about to be wiped out :(

Hopefully this tower doesn't get started for a couple years.

At least the view to the South will always be spectacular.

The glassed section in the pic on the above post is the theatre. The section on the right is the annexe to the actual tower. Levels 6 down take up the extra floor space.

:bash: REJECTED!!!!!

The council has rejected the scaled down 40 storey proposal for this site because it will cast shadow over King George Square in Winter when warmth is needed most. The tower would cast the public square with 90% shadow in winter and the civic cabinet found that unacceptable.

Read todays City News article page 12

Prime Site in Courier Mail last Friday reports that Amalgamated Property Group has gained approval for a 34 storey residential tower on this site (28s tower/6s podium). Looks like a compete redesign - BCC are now happy with issues regarding shading of King George Sqaure. I'm guessing the partial floor plates on upper floors (as well as reduced height) might be to reduce shadow on KGS.

Have a look at the DA at> http://www.ourbrisbane.com/public/DAServlet/902210
Total height isn't given but I scaled it at 102m. "Typical RL's" are ground 18.2m, top of top floor 116.1m = 98m ground to top of top floor + scaled 3.8m roof feature = 101.8 = 102m. Short for a 34s but most floor-to-floors are only 2.8m

What a shame, good location for something taller, but I guess the shadowing over King George Square was a big issue with the council.

Paint the edges of the floor plates bright orange and eggplant, alternating the colours with the different floor plan configurations and clad the central two fin walls in some sought of metal silver finish and I would be happier. Or coat the central two fin walls in Copper and paint the floorplate edges egplant and bright pistachio green!!!

Its like a clone of Aurora.
Then its like it had an anville dropped on it dis-shaping and shortening it.
Then someone fired a barrage of 10000000 bullets into it.

that is this tower.

(It has so much resemblance to Aurora, but its obviously different and worse)

I dont HATE it per-say. But the other design was better. Orange!!!

June 9th, 2005, 11:44 AM
You locals are a load of knockers. Sure it's shorter that we'd like, but we know why. It isn't a box and it won't date as quickly as many Melbourne buildings. The corny colour strips on version 1 are gone (another thing that dates quickly). Now we've got another smaller-floor-plate top (a Brisbane archetype?) and an irregular floor plan. The render from Edward st (oriolus top/Muse) shows it is something special. But then I love Riparian and can't see any resemblance to Aurora.

Grantus
June 9th, 2005, 11:48 AM

And on that note I look forward to the day they demolish the Suncorp building.

Most floors had Asbestos removed, except for most of the lower floors.
Lower floors cannot hang up Christmas decorations due to strict conditions imposed. The good thing about us staff leaving this building is the ridiculous queues to get into the building. Every last inch in the building has a desk.

So will Suncorp keep any staff in the tower once they move to Bris Square?

The short answer is No.

The building was sold so all staff will relocate. Brisbane Square is already too small to accomodate all Sun staff into the Brisbane Square, so other sites in the city are under review. These may be existing buildings or quote 'another site'.

if there were to pull it dow it would be easy coz it has a steel structure. it would be like a mechno set. Personally, i dont think you can knock down Brisbane's first true skyscraper.
