Why cannot our photographers take more pics like this??? There are several 2 km flyovers in India but I haven't seen a pic like this which gives a total view. Our media is too obssesed with politics.
The project was also on BBC.

almost 88 percent work of the 2,505-meter long flyover has been done. It has three wings connecting Khilgaon, Rajarbagh and Syedabad. It is scheduled to open on Dec 31. Here are some old as well as recent pictures.

Khilgaon Flyover has a more traditional form factor (like a majority of the Indian flyovers I've seen). It has a beam/platen form rather than the Caisson (box) understructure as for the Mohakhali Flyover. Caisson is a lot lighter but requires that the caisson components be pre-cast and joined on site using special jigs. Hence requires more time.
Predictably -- caisson structures are a lot more expensive and the domain of specialized Engineering firms. The Jamuna Bridge is a huge Caisson based project.

here are some of the roundabouts in Dhaka. Dhaka is slowly demolising the roundabouts and replacing them with traffic signals. A lot money was spent in last year installing traffic signals in many intersections.

Why must demolish roundabouts? I found them make driving more convenient as they help us navigate especially in in big cities.....
I personally would suggest Jakartan government to think of building more roundabout.

Jatrabari flyover gets govt nod
Staff Correspondent
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs yesterday approved in principle the seven-kilometre Jatrabari flyover project to be implemented by a joint venture of Bangladesh and United Arab Emirates under a 'build, own and operate (BOO)' basis.
If the prime minister endorses the cabinet nod, Orion of Bangladesh, UAE's Belhasa and Indian Acom will work together to connect the city's Jatrabari with Gulistan in 30 to 36 months at a cost of Tk 700 crore.
The flyover will have seven exit-entry points including one at Tikatuli and one at Syedabad.
But, this is going to be a paid ride for city commuters. For a five-kilometre flyover trip, a motorcyclist will have to pay Tk 5, a CNG autorickshaw Tk 10, car Tk 35, jeep Tk 40, microbus Tk 50, minibus Tk 100 and trailer Tk 200.
It was also proposed that the toll rates would be increased every three years to match the inflation. The Orion-Belhasa-Acom will collect the tolls for 24 years under the BOO contract.
The joint venture will get a 15-year tax holiday, although the finance minister who chairs the committee meetings earlier downright rejected the idea. The government's draft Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) also discourages tax holiday.
The cabinet committee at its meeting yesterday also decided to add Vat (value-added tax) to the toll. But, at the same time, the committee asked the project authorities -- Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) -- to bargain with the joint venture to lower the tariff.
The joint venture will pay a certain amount annually to the government.
According to a World Bank (WB) survey conducted in 2000, 66,000 motor vehicles pass through the Gulistan area every day. The joint venture proposed that if the traffic flow is less than 66 percent of that estimate, the annual payable to the government should be lowered.
Presiding over the committee meeting, Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman said there will be a number of alternative routes created in the city in the near future. It is hard to guess the exact impact of these new routes on the traffic flow in Gulistan. In case the traffic flow becomes less than 66 percent of the WB survey findings, the government will not consider reduction of the fee, but may extend the 24 years of the BOO period as a compensation.
Sources said the joint venture sought tax exemption on import of raw materials for construction of the flyover, but the cabinet committee rejected the proposal.
The DCC and the local government ministry had tabled this project before the cabinet committee more than a year ago with similar financial outline. Although the committee at that time had asked these authorities to revise the proposal by dropping some components like tax exemption and tax holiday, cutting the toll rates and changing some other points, the project document returned to the committee in February with little or no change.
The February meeting repeated the suggestion to revise the proposal, but, once again, it came back to the cabinet committee yesterday virtually unchanged. Saifur went on record saying the project in places contradicts the Private Sector Infrastructure Guideline and that he has asked the authorities to revise it in line with the guideline.
Following the meeting at the Cabinet Division, DCC Mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka told journalists, "We expect the prime minister to inaugurate the project within this month.

The 1.9-kilometre Khilgaon flyover was commissioned to traffic on Wednesday.
The total cost of the flyover, 14 metres wide and having 543 piles, is about Tk 81.75 crore. The flyover has a 780-metre main bridge and three ramps. The length of the flyover towards Sayedabad is 303 metres, Malibagh 190 metres and Rajarbagh 285 metres.
The ramp towards Sayedabad is 220 metres, Malibagh 202 metres and Rajarbagh 222 metres.
Local firm Development Construction Limited built the flyover on internal funds. The Local Government Engineering Department implemented the project.
The government first took the initiative to turn Dhaka into a clean city, with all modern facilities, she said, referring to steps such as cleanliness drives and banning old vehicles and two-stroke auto-rickshaws, banning polythene, three plantation, modernisation of traffic signals and renovation of roads.
She talked about the construction of multi-storey parking lot at Motijheel, introduction of circular waterways and beautification of roads, footpaths, road islands and the Airport Road.
The mayor said the process for a seven-kilometre flyover from Jatrabari to Gulistan has begun. The foundation stone for the flyover is expected to be laid in the first week of April by the prime minister, he said.

Dhaka City planners designed a layout to decorate the capital in high-rolling glamour through architectural landscaping.
The process started with the Dhaka Urban Transport Project (DUTP), a tk 1200 crore WB-funded project, the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) and the Roads and Highways Department (RHD). They, together, undertook the repair and construction of 2447.69 kilometres of wide and narrow lanes, along with 163 kilometres of footpath. In addition to this, a Tk 150-crore DCC project for the greening of Dhaka through planting trees, and adding colour with flowering plants.
Under the project, almost all important medians and road islands stretching from Bangabhaban to airport have been brought under fresh plantation. A total of 71 public and private organisations are implementing the project.
The authorities have divided the city into 109 zones and asked the executing agencies to beautify these areas. The private organisations will plant trees on medians and road dividers and maintain the plants for the next four years.
Besides, two parks have been handed over to private organisations for eight years for maintenance and beautification.
The government is not spending in this project. Government agencies and private organisations are implementing this plan with their own funds. Dhaka City Corporation is just is co-ordinating the whole project.
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) is likely to award the best organisations for their efforts in planting and maintaining the medians of the city roads.
DCC allowed the organisations to put a maximum of three advertisement boards in their designated areas on completion of the beautification work. The size of the billboards will be approved by the city corporation.

Wow its so clean under the flyovers. Usually when flyovers are built the surroundings areas become very dirty and ugly but this is really nice. Anyways i am going to dhaka next summer so wondering what other projects will be done by then?

Zaki you will be amazed at the rapid development of Dhaka. I go there every year and I still cant keep up with all the changes. You can expect to see a lot of shiny new shopping malls and high rises. There are 4 brand new hotels (3 five star), five international standard mega hospitals, huge flyover over jatrabari(under construction), a massive shopping mall called Jamuna Future City in Bashundhara etc to name but a few.

What a smart idea! Cities that are strapped for cash should definitely do this.

Nice subjects earlier on... A red Jaguar S Type, a BMW 5 series, and then a Lexus! I was flying out of Dhaka in September, and I couldnt help but notice some huge cranes off in the distance straight from Rwy14... then I realised it was for the Jamuna Group's shopping centre just beside Bashundhara. THAT is going to be one HUGE Building!!

The flyover is in the older part of Dhaka city, newer areas at the suburbs(like Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara, Uttara) are much less dense..

Do you know if there are any projects regarding this intersection and fixing up the traffic problem there. This intersection is called farmgate and its infamous for its traffic jams. You could be stuck here for hours trying to cross just this little area cause supposedly from this point you can go to any point in Bangladesh.

MAGHBAZAR FLYOVER
Kuwait agrees to give $70m
Kuwait has agreed in principle to provide $70 million to construct an 8.25-kilometre-long flyover connecting Maghbazar with Sat Rasta roundabout, Mouchak, Bangla Motor, and Basabo in the city.
In response to a request of the Economic Relations Division, the Kuwait government in a letter on Wednesday expressed its interest to fund the project, sources concerned said.
‘We sent a letter in the last week of November to the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development requesting for $70 million to build the flyover. We received a positive reply on Wednesday, in which the KFAED showed its interest to provide us the fund but after it completed financing the third phase of Chittagong Power Development Project,’ said an ERD official.
He said it would take about three months to have the agreement on financing the third phase of CPDP signed.
‘Funding the flyover ranks third on the KFAED’s priority list of project, which had been awaiting the consent of the Kuwait government,’ a source in the local government and rural development ministry said.
The KFAED has given the highest priority to financing the proposed Karnaphuli Bridge, which is followed by the Bogra Women’s Medical College, the LGRD source said.
According to the design already approved by the immediate past government, the flyover will have eight ramps at Rampura, Rajarbagh, Maghbazar Wireless Gate, Mouchak, near Holy Family Red Crescent Hospital, and at Bangla Motors, FDC Gate, and Sat Rasta roundabout.
A part of the flyover will connect Mouchak with Shantinagar crossing, Rajarbagh, Rampura, and the railway crossing on Atish Dipankar Road in Basabo. Another part of it will stretch from Maghbazar via Maghbazar railway crossing, FDC intersection to Sat Rasta roundabout, while a third part will connect Maghbazar with Mouchak.
Initially the plan was to construct a 2.1km flyover from Maghbazar to Mouchak but later it was decided to make it 8.25km long. One section of the flyover will have four lanes and the other two.
It will be open to all types of motorised vehicles, said an official at the Local Government Engineering Department, adding it has been designed in conformity with the Strategic Transport Plan for the city and the proposed elevated expressway.
The LGED has already completed a feasibility study of the flyover, also funded by the KFAED, at a cost of Tk 3.5crore.
The government undertook the initiative to construct the flyover two years ago and assigned the LGED to implement the project.
It will be the fourth flyover in the city, which now has Mohakhali and Khilgaon flyovers in use, while the construction of Gulistan-Jatrabari flyover is already under way.

Bridge to be built over Banani lake
A 90-metre long bridge between Banani and Gulshan will be built over Banani Lake as part of the plan to reduce the pressure of traffic in the city's posh area.
The proposed four-lane bridge project will be implemented by Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) at a cost of Tk 15 crore, Adviser for LGRD and Cooperatives Mohammad Anwarul Iqbal told a press briefing at the conference room of the local government division at the secretariat here yesterday.
The bridge will connect road no-11 of Banani in the west and road no-41 of Gulshan in the east to lessen the pressure of vehicular traffic in the most important area of the city, he said.
The adviser said finalisation of the design of the bridge through tender and other formalities have already been completed.

That would be great (for me specially!). I also heard this on TV news last night but didnt know the road numbers.
But if they allow rickshaws on that bridge, it will not bring any good but sluggish movement. As the rickshaws are not allowed to pass through the Gulshan 2 circle now, they move inside Gullshan or Banani but cannot move between these two very easily, as there is a forbidden gap. But if they allow 'em on that propsed bridge, it will increase the rickshaw traffic very much moving between these areas, and the bridge will be like the one on the Dhanmondi lake eventually!

i think rickshaws are going to be around for another decade or so. otherwise, they wouldn't issue licenses to illegal rickshawpullers.

March 7th, 2007, 02:21 AM
^^ Although most of us here would like a rickshaw free city, before that can happen you have to create new jobs to replace those that would be lost, and you would have to have another cheap and effective form of public transport. Manufacturing, owning, driving, and repairing rickshaws probably employs hundreds of thousands of people in Dhaka. When an unskilled person from the countryside shows up in Dhaka looking for a job, chances are that he becomes a rickshaw puller. And for the average dhakaiya (not OUR own Dhakaiya :) ) this also affords a cheap, clean, and efficient form of transport. So, until there are alternatives from the economic and public transportation standpoint, getting rid of rickshaws is a difficult proposition.
BTW, always good to have a new forumer, Eagle Eyes.

March 7th, 2007, 04:03 AM
I definitelly dont think they should get rid of rickshaws. First of all they are pollution free which is a HUGE plus. Secondly they are cheap. Thirdly they are great for travelling short distances. FINALLY and most importantly, they are a symbol of Dhaka, a positive symbol. I know it affects traffic a lot but they should build streets especially for rickshaws. The rickshaw has a great romantic image to it.
Also do you realize that in places like Toronto and even NY, people pay $40 just to go on a rickshaw. Its a great tourist attraction. Dhaka should take advantage of this situation.

March 7th, 2007, 07:10 AM
Guys, I was not talking about getting rid of rickshaws from the whole city, in fact, I 've a very soft corners for 'em...for all the reasons Zaki mentioned. I was just talking about allowing 'em on the proposed bridge. As rickshaws are very good stuffs for short distances, they should remain inside an area rather than being allowed on the bridges connecting two areas.

JATRABARI-GULISTAN FLYOVER
Experts suggest dropping several ramps
Several ramps of the proposed Jatrabari-Gulistan flyover will be omitted from the original design to reduce obstructions to traffic movement on roads under the flyover, experts told journalists after a tripartite meeting on Monday at Nagar Bhaban.
Dhaka City Corporation authorities met the project implementing company officials and experts of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology to review the plan of the Tk 670 crore flyover amid reports of design flaws.
‘We have agreed that several ramps should be omitted for the sake of smooth vehicular movement on the roads under the flyover,’ former BUET vice-chancellor professor M Ali Murtaza told reporters after the meeting.
The meeting identified that ramps planned on Doyaganj road, Atish Dipankar Road and Narayanganj road would impede smooth traffic movement.
Mayor Sadeque Hossain said, ‘We have also discussed whether a provision of future extension of the flyover can be kept at Gulistan point.’ He hoped that the construction would be completed as per the schedule.
The city mayor said the BUET experts will oversee the overall construction of the flyover.
Jatrabari-Gulistan Flyover project director Ashiqur Rahman said, ‘Belhasa-Acom JV will appoint two Chinese construction firms for the work.’
The Chinese firms, China World-based Group Company and Chinese First Metallurgical Construction Company, which built the Mohakhali flyover, will jointly construct the Jatrabari flyover, he said.
Asked why Belhasa is implementing this work through sub-contractors, Ashiq said it was not a sub-contract.
BUET professor Murtaza said there is no bar in engaging any other technical firm in the construction work.
The construction company has completed test piling which will be followed by root piling be fore the main work begins as per the modified design, he said.
Among others, DCC chief executive officer M Saifuddin Ahmed, BUET professors Alamgir Mujibul Haque and Mujibur Rahman also attended the meeting.
Former prime minister Khaleda Zia on June 4, 2006 laid the foundation stone of the 8km flyover from Gulistan to Jatrabari in Dhaka.
The flyover is scheduled for completion in three years, but the work on the project has not progressed much since then due to various complications.
According to the preliminary design, the flyover will have four lanes, seven entrances and 13 ramps.
However, the number of ramps will come down as per the latest review of the design.
The Belhasa-Acom JV will implement the flyover project, whose cost has been estimated at Tk 670 crore, according to DCC officials. The work on the flyover has stalled.
Urban planning experts believe the Tk 670-crore Jatrabari-Gulistan flyover project, undertaken by the immediate-past government of the Bangladesh Nationalists Party-led alliance, should be thoroughly reviewed, as it may have been politically influenced to protect the interest of a vested interest group.
The contract for the build-own-operate-and-transfer project was awarded to Belhasa Accom JV and Associates, with the Orion Group chairman, Obaidul Karim, who has been accused of misappropriating nearly Tk 600 crore from a private bank, as its authorised representative.
The project cost was initially estimated to be Tk 370 crore before being revised to Tk 670 crore.
Sources involved with the project allege that the upward revision of the estimate was done to keep the toll rate high and the 24-year toll period unchanged, sources said.
The revised estimate, which has serious anomalies about projected expenditure of around Tk 200 crore, was done at the behest of the Prime Minister’s Office and the Dhaka City Corporation, the sources alleged.

Good to have you with us. To answer your question, mostly by public transportation like bus, train etc. In the old part of Dhaka people still prefer to commute by three wheelers like RICKSHAWS. And of course the rich people have their cars. Hope that answer your question.

Really nice roads of Bangladesh. Mmm I thought that most Dhakaites drive their own car or ride on motorcycles to get to work. But Dhaka is a city of 12 million, must be overcrowded if everybody using private vehicle.
My Bangladeshi fren told me that in Bangladesh, houses, shops, schools, everything is in the same place, so people simply walk to do shopping and doing other daily neccessities. Very different from here, where everything is far apart :)

That would be nice, wouldn't it? We all in Dhaka nxt year, dream on..... Anyhow, at first sight Dhaka might look a little chaotic, antique(the older part) and of course over crowded:nuts: but in few days you will get used to Dhaka streets. Keep in mind it is not a tourists thriving city. Still you might feel at home especially if you are from tropics. So the bottom line is there are plenty of things to see and enjoy in Dhaka and overall the whole country. Even better if you have good friends.
One little advice though, every nation is unique in respect to their culture, religion and society. Dhaka has it's own taste.

@ Skyprince:
Dhaka is chaotic - but don't let it get to you. Take a deep breath (not too deep...it can be smoggy :) ), relax, and you will find that everything does work, just maybe not how you are used to in Kuala Lampur. Use common sense when it comes to personal safety. I recommend reading Lonely Planet's Bangladesh guidebook. It is the only English guidebook of Bangladesh I know of, and a pretty good one. If you have an idea of where to go and what to do when you arrive, you will get the most out of your trip. As Enu has said, Dhaka does not get very many tourists and so the tourist infrastructure is not that strong. The very best thing is to know someone locally (maybe Enu :) ) who can show you around.
