talk bout hip-hop look.. i think of the shops in uptown..:D
Ijud November 5th, 2004, 09:00 AM What I like about Sungei Wang is their handphone stalls and magazines stall... at the top floor... very cheap!!
nazrey November 5th, 2004, 09:03 AM I'm just normal from kampong LOL....
OK,Could someone tell me where I can buy MP3 melayu overthere? hard to find thought.
Ijud November 5th, 2004, 09:06 AM Aiyohh... now hard to find mp3 melayu on sale larr... but you can log on to mIRC and go to the chatroom called "mp3melayu" and download from there!
But dun say I recommend that... the artists will get angry and sue me :D:D:D
szehoong November 5th, 2004, 10:16 AM Sungei Wang is great because you could get the cheapest stuffs there and also some of the expensive stuffs as well. You'll get anything from the latest digital camera ....Dockers.....British India.......very very expensive Hi-Fi stuffs........computers and custom made clothes to cheap cheap stuffs like shoes, CDs ....DVDs ( fake ones hehehe :D ) and clothings ;)
I also like Suria because for branded stuffs....they've got the cheapest to the most expensive. Take for example - shoes......they've got anything from Bata to Bally :D

eh....a few months back...Baq and I was at Sg. Wang and we saw this Malay singer/actress ( forgot the name already :D ) buying cetak rompak DVD ...hehehe.....
szehoong November 5th, 2004, 10:21 AM One Utama would have to be No.1
Reasons?
1. easy to park
2. HUGE variety in shops
3. decent interior
4. yummy eating selections
5. beautiful people
I agree with point 2 till 4 but 'easy to park' ???
I would find 1 Utama the most difficult esp during weekend (if you could get to the parking in the first place!) :D
With the opening of the new wing....parking had been 'easier' but it is still a major headache for me. Well......coming from someone whom frequent 1 Utama a lot (esp during my college days)....well....1 Utama is simply VERY bad for parking ;)
Suria KLCC had the easiest parking among all the big ones.......Midvalley is one of the worst also. :)

1 Utama is easy to park if you come early. I mean early is before the mall open its door to shoppers like us lor. If not, Then I have to agree with Sze that it is one hell of a nitemare, only second to MidValley.
Suria, though is the easiest to park among all the big ones, damn expensive for a parking ticket. 1 Utama is the best. RM1. ;)
But for Sg. Wang. after 5pm they charge RM4 flat...which is a bargain.

What mall also haven't open also easy to park wan lar! :bash:
Yea....but sometimes I'd rather park expensive places like KLCC rather than going to 1 Utama or Midvalley where on a weekend would cost ya 1/2 hour just to masuk carpark and another half hour to park.....totally insane man! :D
As for Sg. Wang.....I dun like to park there.....hmmm.....I always park at Lot 10 or JW Mariott (note: JW Mariott parking is different from Starhill) where they both charges flat rate of RM5 after 6pm (whole day on weekends). JW Mariott's parking is the easiest to find parking and it is very very safe (got more guards there than KLCC) :D but it takes a bit of walking to Low Yat or Sg. Wang lah. ;)
SEED November 5th, 2004, 02:59 PM Suria KLCC~ :D and avenue k for architecture~ :D
liping_t November 5th, 2004, 03:42 PM What mall also haven't open also easy to park wan lar! :bash:

halo halo halo, no need to wait in line to park in the main entrance car parks, go round to the side and up the ramp into the rooftop carparks OR alternatively, park in the open space right beside the Mall. Always find parking there, within 10 minutes! Then walk through the underground parking into the Mall. No problem.
sugizm November 5th, 2004, 04:57 PM talk about jams in 1-utama, their jusco premium card holder sales is just insane.. i didn't know about this last time, n went there at thier sales time.. toke me 45 minutes (taxi) to reach the main gate.. n toke me another 1 hour lining up to catch a taxi back...
baqthier November 6th, 2004, 08:03 AM One Utama!
Why?
- HUGE!
- Lots of shops! Lots of place to eat! (last time me ate at Old Asia Restaurant there..got a big tikus on the sofa!!!!!..at the same time i was also ordering lor see furn)
- No tacky boutiques that play those loud techno music!
- Damansara chicks
- etc

errrr.....no need to wait in line to park at the main entrance outdoor carpark? You sure? I dun think so. Most of the time there isn't any parking to start with and there would be a dozen other cars circling around like vultures.
The rooftop parking are full most of the time and the top 2 floors of parking too. I go there like almost everyday for 4 years so I am a 'veteran' there :D The 'uofficial' open-air parking beside the mall would get muddy if it rains and the nearest exit/entrance is kinda far. Furthermore it has been closed now for the construction of the hotel building ;)
Maybe you're just lucky. Most of the people I know always complain bout the parking there. But with the new wing opened....the parking situation improves a lot but during weekends.......dun even think about parking within half and hour - seriously :D
szehoong November 6th, 2004, 08:30 AM Here's a picture I took on a fine Sunday a few months ago (this is when only the new wing is half-opened)....so imagine now lah har! :D

szehoong November 6th, 2004, 08:34 AM Oh....and these pictures are taken on a normal non-festive weekend somemore........plus Ikea had already moved out and Ikano already opened; taking some 'load' off 1 Utama :D
Like Suguzm had said....just imagine if they had sales there! :D :dizzy:

Ha.yes, but the way I drive, I take that road you see towards the far end of the pic (T-junction) and thus skip the traffic q-ing up. You drive down Damansara Highway as if to go into the PLUS highway towards Klang, but make a right on a flyover right before the toll house. That flyover will connect you to a road that brings you right in front of KBU....keep on driving, and you will creep up behind One Utama. That's where I park....:P
THT-United November 7th, 2004, 03:12 PM My Top 5 favorite malls:
1. 1u - near my home in SS2, lots of shops and F&B outlets, classy yet affordable boutiques, Village cinema, Jusco, UParkson
2. KLCC - the sheer prestige alone, excellent transportation and parking, SonyStyle (ex-Wings), Isetan, best for people-watching
3. MidValley - no. 1 in choice!, KL and PJ chicks convergence place :) , MASSIVE!, the no. 1 cinema also...
4. IKANO Center - everything is HUGE!, IKEA, Popular (1000x better than the one in Atria), also near my house
5. Sunway Pyramid - nice architecture, good mix of tenants (top-end and mid-range shops everywhere), the ice-skating rink, another good Village
D_Y2k.2^ November 7th, 2004, 03:28 PM To me all the shopping centres stated by u guys are also good la:D
Talk about Traffic jam in 1U,i had an adventurous experience in July man.I went there from Bukit Bintang. How i went n balik?hehe.....first,took monorail to Sentral, then Putra to the end of the line(cant remember the station's name),then taxi to 1 U:D
However,on the way,i cari Taxi terribly la....it was raining and the queue was....hehehe....so wat i did was waited at the main road which Sze took and luckily i manage to get 1:) Btw,when is the Curve opening?

szehoong November 8th, 2004, 08:34 AM Yess indeed Redstone... even the shops there are not dat branded ones...
well....cos it is like more of a community mall than an upmarket one.
Anyway Mines Shopping Fair is confusing cos the carpark is splitlevel and the way they number the floors are a bit weird cos it is built into a slope. I too get confused there :D
Well.....the fact that being quite a big shopping mall to0 doesn't help :D .....I like the fact that there is a canal that runs thru it and one could stroll along the canal to the park next to the mall ;) The cinema there also not bad and the top floor which used to housed an ice-skating rink, an indoor amusement park and a bowling alley (all which had very poor response) had been converted to more shops :D
szehoong November 8th, 2004, 08:36 AM Hey...I'm lost lor. This is about what :?

redstone November 8th, 2004, 10:36 AM MidValley is a little too big for me.
It has 3 atriums, which makes me confused that time I went there.
KLCC is easier to navigate.
Mines is also rather confusing to get about.
Ijud November 8th, 2004, 10:38 AM redstone... u dun like 1U???

Suria KLCC is the best mall to enter and exit considering all road tunnels lead to the main roads. I never had a traffic jam problem there. And I think the RM5 flat rate after 6pm is worth it ;)
If you are tight on budget then you can park at the KLCC Park carpark which cost only RM1. After 6pm it is free ( <<< oh.....dunno wether they naikkan the price already or not) :D
Another cheaper alternative would be parking at Jelatek Putraline station and then take LRT :D
szehoong November 9th, 2004, 11:25 AM Renaissance

haha....heard you said this many times liao
ANyway Renaissance to KLCC isn't that far mah ;) The distance is something like from Raffles Place to Raffles City mah :D
You must have accidentally met the rush hours to get back from KL Tower and to go to KLCC.
Another alternative is to go across the road and take the Putraline LRT from Dang Wangi station and proceed to KLCC station. That would save you all the trouble of walking ;)
redstone November 9th, 2004, 12:24 PM So near, take LRT only wasting money, wat!

http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2003/8/p21Ikea.jpg

The outlet at 1 Utama had been there since 1996 :)
szehoong November 9th, 2004, 01:51 PM Does Malaysia have stores like Muji,City Super or Page one?
hmmm.....of all you've mentioned; we've only got PageOne :)
Ijud November 9th, 2004, 03:47 PM In fact all our bookstores are Singaporean companies.....
Times ........Popular.........except for Kinokuniya which is Japanese :D
But now MPH is a Malaysian Company right...
MPH: A BRIEF HISTORY
MPH Bookstores has its roots in 1815 when William Milne, a young missionary, established a permanent mission press in Malacca. This establishment moved to Singapore in 1890 with the primary objective of printing literature.
In 1893, the company known then as the Amelia Bishop Press moved to Singapore’s Raffles Place, and changed its name to the American Mission Press. Rev William T Cherry turned the foundations of this mission press into a multi-faceted organisation, which diversified into book printing, publishing and distribution.
In 1906, the organisation underwent another name change to the Methodist Publishing House. In 1927, it was incorporated as Malaya Publishing House when it became a public listed company. Following the announcement of the Malaysian nation in 1963, the company changed its name to Malaysia Publishing House and new bookstores were opened in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Malacca. To the public, Malaysia Publishing House has always been known as MPH.
The late Jack Chia, acquired MPH in 1972. MPH then became known as Jack Chia-MPH Ltd. The company changed its name to MPH Ltd in March 2000 to reflect the change in its majority ownership since 1998. MPH Bookstores Sdn Bhd was 100% owned by MPH Group (M) Sdn Bhd which in turn was a subsidiary of MPH Ltd, a public company listed on the stock exchange of Singapore.
On 20 December 2002, MPH Bookstores Sdn Bhd was bought over by a Malaysian company, Jalinan Inspirasi Sdn Bhd, which is part of a large Malaysian conglomerate controlled by Malaysian businessman Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary. Jalinan Inspirasi changed its name to MPH Group Malaysia Sdn Bhd to reflect its core businesses and it now owns MPH Bookstores (Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia), MPH Distributors (Malaysia and Singapore) and MPH Library Services (Singapore).
MPH Bookstores currently has 29 outlets in Malaysia: 20 in the Klang Valley, 2 each in Johor and Pulau Pinang and 1 each in Perak, Melaka and Kedah operating under the MPH Bookstores brand name. The company also operates Bookmark, a secondary chain of bookstores launched in June 2000 to offer value for money merchandise to a different segment of market readers. Bookmark outlets are located in Senawang, Negeri Sembilan and Plentong, Johor.

Perhaps even a mini volcano outside and it's own lil' zoo....hey, entertainment sells! *GRIN*...or else, all malls will start to look the same...seen one, seen all...

Too confusing for a shopping mall. But I like one of its wing...where all the restaurant located. One section for asian and local food and the other side for Western.

THOSE who were at 1-Utama Shopping Centre's new wing on a recent weekday would have seen a curious sight – a group of children standing in a long queue at the Oval concourse. Santa Claus was coming to town!
The first 50 children had the chance to meet Father Christmas and received their gifts from him.
They did not have to wait until midnight on Christmas Eve to see the port-bellied man in red suit, as he had been making his appearance at 7.30pm every day at that particular spot at the mall.
The children started to smile and sing along to the Christmas tunes being played when the clock struck half-past seven.
http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2004/12/p6utama.JPG
A fairytale castle commands centrestage at 1-Utama.
The bells rang louder and then it started to “snow.” The “snowflakes” dropped on the castle and the Christmas trees. Some of the children tried to catch the snowflakes made out of foam.
The children screamed with excitement when they heard the famous “Ho! Ho! Ho!” greeting.
Everyone looked up when he was spotted on the platform of the fifth floor. This time, he did not take the normal route via a chimney but slid down a rope from the platform instead.
This Santa Claus not only brought gifts, he also entertained the children with Christmas carols.
That has been the scene at the shopping complex since Dec 4, and Santa will continue to visit until Christmas day.
The crowd is larger on the weekend and the queue reaches its limit faster.
There are various activities happening at the same venue, such as musical performances, games and ballet dances. Characters from Sesame Street, Beauty and the Beast and Peter Pan will also make appearances.
1-Utama manager Kenny Chin said the shopping centre had spent about RM400,000 on building the centrepiece, which consisted of a castle with six towers and a sweeping staircase on both sides of the castle. Snow-covered Christmas trees, adorned with ornaments, lights and trimmings, surround the castle.
The shopping centre has also draped its main entrance with more than half a million decorative lights.
“We had our first lighting ceremony on the 10th to welcome the festive season,” said Chin, adding that the lighting ceremony would become a tradition at 1-Utama.

WHERE shopping is concerned, the 1-Utama shopping centre comes to mind for most people in the Klang Valley.
Located near the Damansara-Puchong Highway (LDP), opposite Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI), the shopping centre, which originally measured 186,000 sq metres in 1995 emerged into a mega shopping arcade with an extended phase of 279,000 sq metres built-up area in 2003.
Now, with 465,000 sq metres of built-up space costing RM500mil, the shopping centre is an ideal place for shopping, entertainment and recreation.
With Jaya Jusco as its anchor tenant, the old phase of the centre has about 250 shops and the Tanjong Golden Village cinema. The new phase has 400 shops with U Parkson and Giant Fresh supermarket as the anchor tenants.
The extended family also incorporates various renowned international boutiques that have opened their first signature stores in the country.
These include retailers such as Sisley, Tommy Hilfiger, Kenneth Cole, Ralph Lauren and Brooks Brother.
For the health conscious, there is also a new-concept fitness centre called Celebrity Fitness.
The two unique features at the extended shopping centre also include a three-level overhead pedestrian mall (Sky Mall) and an underground tunnel (Tunnel Link), which links the original phase to the extended one.
These features provide customers an uninterrupted shopping experience with 120 speciality shops on both sides.
As for recreation, there is the Rainforest, a breath-taking indoor conservatory inspired by Malaysia’s tropical rainforests.
This showcase of biodiversity of the Malaysian rainforest boasts of many species of flora and incorporates facilities such as al fresco dining, a canopy walk on the Rainbow suspension bridge, a rock-climbing feature and a waterfall.
The extended phase also has Pet’s Wonderland that stretches to the Lakeside area and an aviary that has many species of birds.
Apart from that, 1-Utama is also a disabled-friendly place with spacious corridors, several lifts and washroom facilities for the disabled.
To cater to the thousands of people visiting the shopping centre daily, there are more than 7,000 parking bays available.
With such services for its customers, 1-Utama shopping centre was recently awarded the National Creativity Award by the Malaysian Innovation and Design Centre.
For more information, call 03-7710 8118.

By Bus:
Five-minute walk from a bus stop at Lebuh Bandar Utama.
ZaHiRnYa??? December 29th, 2004, 08:09 AM Don't forget. The new 1 Utama wing will have a new cinema altogether. 7 screen in fact.

Why is this place not popular with you locals? I must say though, I was amazed that you had to run accross the road to get to it. There wasn't a Zebra crossing, or a pedestrian crossong-signal, or a walk-bridge!

Actually Tesco, The Curve, Ikea and Ikano Power Ctr are all connected. But to connect 1U and this bunch takes the willpower and the economic sense of their respective developers ;)

Actually they are not that far apart. My estimate would be around 200 metres or slightly more. A metro to that area would be the perfect solution to the already congested suburb ;)

Actually like what Hypermount had mentioned, there is a walk-bridge at the monorail station. And this walk-bridge had escalators and not many bridges feature that convenience. The problem is that many people doesn't know bout it or choosed to ignore it. So it is under-utilized. :(
A solution would be to built a bridge or a tunnel across the road on the popular road-dashing end. The monorail station is on the other end unfortunately. :(

That is why i admire the Curve and IKANO-Ikea's planning... Both complexes are linked by three ways: overhead pedestrian bridge to IKANO, pedestrian crossing to the mid-section of IKANO-Ikea, and an underpass to Ikea itself... Very interesting idea to have above-, on-, and below-ground crossings!

That one missing piece of the puzzle is on the land where the golf driving range is currently located...
Once the development of the medical center (izzit?) on that land is completed, there will be a long stretch of commercial activity all the way from Sri Pentas TV3, to 1u (the hotel-office complex and the mall itself), and ending at the Mutiara Damansara cluster... By then, the super-megamall that tomkat envisioned may have become reality!

Well it would be unfair to compare the Mutiara D'sara (MD) area with BB because unlike BB, MD are a planned township and The Curve is part of the plan while Ikano-Ikea is an anchor landowner there just like Tesco, Cathay, Petronas, Golden-Arches (McD) and Proton Edar (Proton Platinum showroom).
BB is organic and to link all the malls together....only the fed govt and city hall had the political clout and authority to do so. Ya know the fantastic pedestrian bridge that linked Sg. Wang, Lot 10 and the BB Monorail station? Well......even that took months of negotiation and luckily the monorail is involved. Before that, the pedestrian bridge is an effort by Lot 10 and it is not directly linked with Sg. Wang. The underground tunnel from Avenue K to KLCC is another example where Putraline played a part. Apart from that....other links are usually linking self-owned properties like the Starhill - Ritz-Carlton Residences, Berjaya Times Sq - Plaza Berjaya and City Square - Plaza Ampang
There are so many malls that needed covered linking like Sg. Wang - Low Yat Plaza, KL Plaza - Lot 10 (thru Wisma Peladang/Piccolo Galleria), KL Plaza - Starhill and Carrefour - Subang Parade ;)

That would be great......just one thing missing - a metro station. Without that, there wouldn't be enough carpark in that area. The last time I was there, nearly all carpark at 1U is full. I had to park at their 'premium car park' which cost RM2 more ;)

2) The Curve (great design!)
3) Sungei Wang (shopsssss)
Note: Midvalley Megamall will never be in my list for some reasons. Yes it's huge (but isnt 1 Utama the biggest now?), but its interior is a total turn-off (look at The Curve?). Just walk inside Megamall and u'll realise it has low ceilings and ugly floor tiles. The top floor is pretty much of just exposed concrete. Midvalley Megamall is just like any other unattractive shopping malls, just that it's popular for its size. I always think Midvalley has been overrated. And since i'm a shopper and a consumer, I opt for things pleasing to my eyes *grins*

yes.....Midvalley might not be aesthetically pleasing but it isn't that bad compared to many other malls. It just looked more ordinary compared to the more flamboyant malls of PJ.
The top floor many ada exposed concrete? It is all painted and now filled with very exciting shops and restaurants lah. :D I think the top 2 floors have a very good concept :okay:
I dun think Midvalley is just popular for its size and is overrated. Although I like Sg. Wang more than many other malls as I could find most of the things I wanna buy there, I think the reason Midvalley is popular because of its location. My parents would rather go Midvalley then 1 Utama for instance because it is much nearer to Cheras ( in fact they haven't been there since the new wing buka :D ). Another reason is that the mix of tenants there. Yes......1U have a good mix too but MidValley had 2 departmental store as major anchors (Jusco and Metrojaya) and a huge Carrefour as the hypermart there. Then not forgetting the 18 screens GSC there which IMO one of the main draw ( Midvalley had always been my 'backup' cinema if KLCC is not available :D ). This also makes Midvalley big as there are many 'hidden' spaces that are not exposed to the atrium area.
I did my specs at the Optical City there which the service is very good. And not forgetting the amount of gastronomical offering the LG floor had :D Then there is this thing about Midvalley being accessible (not VERY accessible but more accessible than 1U) to those whom doesn't own a car as there are regular bus services there and now there is a KTM Komuter Halt there. Furthermore Bangsar Putraline station is just a short walk away. I know 1U got free bus but still that is simply inadequate :(
Oh...and let's us not forget the lure of MICE at Midvalley with its exhibition hall where famous expo such as MATTA Fair are held. Then there is a hotel there too :D
Maybe 1U is pleasing to you ( everyone had different taste :D ) but Midvalley is certainly not as bad as you've described ;) IMO ther best shopping cluster is still those at BB. Probably its real challenge could be the rise of the malls around the Mutiara Damansara area but in terms of accessibility, BB still tops ;)

GIC buys M’sian shopping mall for RM95mil
THE Government of Singapore Investment Corp (GIC), which manages US$100bil of the city-state's reserves, will pay RM95mil for a Malaysian shopping mall.
Swiss Advanced Technology Institute Sdn Bhd, which is developing the three-storey mall about 40 minutes from Kuala Lumpur would be purchased from RB Land Sdn Bhd, Government of Singapore Investment said in a statement yesterday.
''This acquisition is in line with our investment strategy to build up a portfolio of core retail assets in the Asia-Pacific region,'' Government of Singapore Investment Real Estate president Seek Ngee Huat said in the e-mailed statement.
....hmmm I wonder which one ???????
nazrey January 14th, 2005, 07:07 PM New look for shopping complex
CHERAS LeisureMall celebrated its 10th anniversary with a new look recently. It was a memorable affair where more than 200 people, including its tenants gathered for a time of fun and merriment in conjunction with the Christmas celebration at the main cocourse and stage area.
Cheras LeisureMall has been looking forward to providing visitors with a new ambience and excellent facilities.
The refurbishment will cater to the changing lifestyle and shopping demands of its customers.
The RM12mil renovation works will definitely serve the customers better and increase the number of shoppers.
“The new look will attract a new crowd and serve the customers better,” said the managing director of Message Boutique, Raymond Wong.

szehoong January 15th, 2005, 03:52 AM Direct access to Mid Valley City
Motorists from Kuala Lumpur can now shorten travelling time with a direct access road to Mid Valley City from Jalan Syed Putra.
Motorists can make a left turn just after the Mobil petrol station in Jalan Syed Putra to enter Mid Valley City. Those who wish to go to Cheras and the KL-Seremban Highway from Mid Valley City are advised to use the same road to exit.
The road will shorten travelling time, as motorists no longer need to drive through Taman Seputeh.
To facilitate the work to improve accessibility and infrastructure within Mid Valley City, the link between Taman Seputeh and Mid Valley City was closed from Jan 11. This was done in consultation with the Seputeh Residents Association (SRA) and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
Signs informing motorists of the changes were placed at strategic locations in Mid Valley City, Taman Seputeh and surroundings areas before the closure.
The direct access road, built by Mid Valley Developments Sdn Bhd, had been open to motorists from Kuala Lumpur since August last year.
Under Mid Valley City’s infrastructure plan, more car parking bays will be built and the public transport system will be enhanced for greater convenience.
In August 2004, the new Mid Valley KTM Komuter Station opened along with a covered pedestrian bridge linking the station to the Megamall.
So far, over one million passengers have passed through the station.
The building of new roads and links is proceeding in tandem with on-going developments within Mid Valley City. So far, RM250mil has been spent for the construction of the existing network of roads and flyovers within Mid Valley City.

''This acquisition is in line with our investment strategy to build up a portfolio of core retail assets in the Asia-Pacific region,'' Government of Singapore Investment Real Estate president Seek Ngee Huat said in the e-mailed statement.
....hmmm I wonder which one ???????
40 minutes from KL? hmmm..must be somewhere in Puchong?

liping_t January 15th, 2005, 06:22 PM I like MidValley tons actually...my only gripe is that TONS others love it too...explaining the tough parking situation there always...the wife especially digs it (She's Canadian). Interior decor is not half bad, only comment is that it could be brighter lit and more vibrant. Otherwise great design and amazing stores!
yes.....Midvalley might not be aesthetically pleasing but it isn't that bad compared to many other malls.
Lastresorter January 15th, 2005, 11:52 PM hehe szehoong I have to agree with you that location plays a major part. Yeah I agree location draws ppl to Midvalley. 1U & The Curve area should have a metro system. and I strongly think a LRT would be great, but even a few buses is fine. That cluster is a very dense area in PJ, but I wonder why the public transport is so poor still.
About Midvalley Megamall, I really wish that they do something about their ugly interiors. Especially when they are trying to attract foreigners as well (with convention centre and hotel etc). In fact I kinda like the surrounding shoplots & offices, they look quite classy. To me Megamall's design (actually exterior too) is just an eyesore for that area. It's too ordinary. Same goes to Sungei Wang. As much as I like Sungei Wang for its shops, its exterior really need a facelift (being a major tourist attraction).
And since KL wants to upgrade its image as a world-class city, don't we deserve better designed malls like Suria KLCC, The Curve, or Lot10? Btw, I wonder what Pavilion KL will be like? Ohh yeah, I'm also glad that Bintang Walk has those small nice looking kiosks (Samsung, StanChart, 7-eleven, etc). Those are what I call good designs that will uplift the city's image. In fact, I also like the idea of Galleria Picolo (is that the correct name?). It gives BB area a mini makeover too, amongst the big malls.
Recently I see some shoplots' renovations along Jalan BB, opposite Lot10 & nxt to The Regent. Which i think is a good sign for those lots there. Let's just hope they dont become some big mamak stalls!
Hehe sorry la, I still go for better designs than just good stuffs. If my eyes r happy then i'm also happy to spend more mar. True? *wink*
THT-United January 17th, 2005, 09:35 AM That would be great......just one thing missing - a metro station. Without that, there wouldn't be enough carpark in that area. The last time I was there, nearly all carpark at 1U is full. I had to park at their 'premium car park' which cost RM2 more ;)
I thought the proposed rail network expansion will also stretch all the way to kepong? That is good, as 1u and mutiara will finally get their respective rail stations to relieve the congested roads of vehicular traffic...

THE beauty and wealth of a tropical rainforest are timeless and priceless and these has inspired the 1-Utama shopping centre in Petaling Jaya to bring the rainforest into its premises.
Ever since it did, the indoor jungle has become a favourite spot among shoppers.
http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2005/1/m_p2cone.jpg
The inverted cone above allows sunlight into the forest area while at the same time providing shelter to the diners and shoppers.
A brainchild of See Hoy Chan Holdings group director Datuk Teo Chiang Kok, the RM6mil rainforest is a culmination of three years’ of research by a group of botanists, headed by chief consultant Dr Francis Ng.
Ng is the former deputy director of Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM).
Located at the shopping mall’s new wing, the Rainforest comprises 110 species of trees that thrive on specially-formulated soil.
Artificial sunlight, with bulbs mimicking the same wavelength of natural light, helps the trees to grow at a faster rate.
“The forest trees are competitive in nature,” said Teo. “Hence, we need to plant fast-growing trees to create the competitive environment for them to grow,” he said, adding that once the forest trees had grown, the fast-growing trees would be removed.
There are Ru Sumatra, Meranti, Merawan Siput Jantan, Sungkai, Kempas, Kasai, Surian, Jambu Mawar, Sepetir, Dedali, Pulai, Perah, Ramin, Tabebuia, Katu Arang, Rotan, Kundang and Gelam, among others.
The trees are labelled for easy identification.
Since the trees are expected to grow tall, an inverted cone feature exposes the main area to sunlight and rain.
The cone also protects customers, dining al fresco at cafés around it, from the rain and sun. Unforgettable, a jazz band, entertains shoppers 5pm onwards at the Rainforest’s fourth floor.
Palm trees and creepers on planter boxes at every floor add to the natural charm of the area. They provide a cooling effect for the shoppers and diners.
Visitors take the canopy walk at the second floor for a better view of the Rainforest and its surroundings.
From above, they can also hear the sound of cascading water from a “waterfall” beside the koi ponds.
In them are hundreds of fish that attract children to feed them with food bought for RM2 at the World Wildlife Fund counter on weekends.
The amount collected is then donated to WWF and the Malaysian Nature Society.
http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2005/1/m_p2aerial.jpg
An aerial view of the Rainforest.
Along with the ponds are giant aquariums where about 80 types of local freshwater fish thrive. Teo said every town ought to have a park, like the urban-style Central Park in Bandar Utama. “The Rainforest is a continuation of the park,” he said. “The difference is that it adopts a concept of the forest and is educational.”
Malaysians, he said, did not like going into a forest. “By bringing it to them in a shopping complex, we hope to educate and show families the beauty of nature,” said Teo.
Activities relating to the environment and talks on plants and gardening are held occasionally to create awareness and enthusiasm for the forest. If these do not achieve the desired effect, a giant screen above a rock-climbing feature airs National Geographic documentaries.
“There are also plans to add insects such as crickets, butterflies and dragonflies into the forest,” said Teo. “As for the birds, we don’t have to do much. They are already flying into the Rainforest on their own.”

Asia Star plans 12 additional Irish sandwich bar outlets
ASIA Star Crossing Sdn Bhd, the master franchiser for O'Briens Irish Sandwich Bar in Malaysia, plans to open 12 new outlets and kiosks in the country in a few years from four outlets currently.
Speaking at the launch of the chain's fourth outlet by Ireland's Ambassador to Malaysia, Daniel Mulhall, in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, managing director Grace Pua said the company expected the new outlet to generate good sales amid positive earnings from the first three outlets, the first of which opened in 2002.
“Total sales have increased by 25% in 2004 against the 20% growth in 2003 at the other three outlets, and we are planning to open 12 more outlets and kiosks in a few years,” she said.
O’Briens Irish Sandwich Bar targets health conscious customers under its “Guilt Free Meal” programme. The sandwich outlets each have a calorie counter, so that customers can monitor the fat and calorie contents on the menu. The latest outlet spans 1,400 sq ft and seats 80.

nazrey June 17th, 2005, 06:01 PM Malaysia's Landmarks To Sell Flagship Mall To REIT
Updated : 17-06-2005
Media : Dow Jones
Story By : Carolyn Lim
(Dow Jones)--Malaysia's Landmarks Bhd. (1643.KU), a property development and investment company, Friday said it plans to sell its flagship Sungei Wang Plaza mall to a real estate investment trust.
"The REIT will enable Landmarks Bhd. to monetize the value of its assets as well as to reduce its gearing," the company said in statement to the stock exchange. It didn't provide a value for the mall nor identify the REIT.
Landmarks' statement comes just days before the official start of the public offer of Malaysia's first REIT, Axis REIT Monday.
Axis REIT will on Monday, sign an agreement to appoint Aseambankers Bhd. as underwriter for its initial offer. Its offer prospectus is expected late-June.
Landmarks' Sungei Wang Plaza draws more than 2 million people each month and sits on 17,700 square meters of land in the heart of Kuala Lumpur's Bukit Bintang shopping district.
In its latest annual report, Landmarks said 2004 operating profit from its properties business - of which Sungei Wang Plaza is a key contributor - jumped 57% to MYR35.0 million.
The mall is carried at a book value of MYR199.5 million, according to the annual report. But the company also noted the market value of the mall is MYR540 million, according to a Feb. 16, 2005 valuation.
Landmarks said it will sell the mall to the REIT in return for units in the REIT and cash. It didn't detail the number of REIT units, or amount of cash involved.
The REIT will also issue new bonds to raise cash to part-finance the mall purchase, Landmarks said.
Units of the REIT will also be sold to the public, or placed out to certain investors, Landmarks said. The company also plans to give REIT units to its shareholders as capital distribution.
Landmarks has appointed AmMerchant Bank Bhd. as adviser for the REIT plan. Unlike Landmarks' REIT, whose main asset is a shopping mall, Axis REIT will comprise purpose-built office and warehouse buildings.

travellator April 15th, 2006, 12:34 PM Urban mall boom continues
But more retail space has led to dilution, tougher trading conditions
By PAULINE NG
IN KUALA LUMPUR
MALAYSIA'S urban mall boom shows no signs of abating, with more than four million square feet of shopping space to come on-stream in the next two years. But the expansion of retail space has led to dilution and tougher trading conditions. And nowhere is this more evident than in the Klang Valley, Malaysia's most populous region with 5.8 million people.
Some 1.3 million sq ft of retail space was added in the Valley last year, bringing total supply to 33.45 million sq ft or 108 shopping centres. Much of the new supply is in the form of hypermarkets, of which there are now 20. Per capita space amounts to 5.76 sq ft per person, but in the popular Bandar Utama/Petaling Jaya area alone, total retail supply is four million sq ft and per capita space is 8.88 sq ft per person, said property consultancy Regroup Associates.
2005 was a difficult year for retail, said Regroup. Some higher-end shops in newer shopping centres, such as the affluent Bandar Utama/Petaling Jaya area, did not have sufficient takings to survive - despite the area's higher average household income of more than RM6,500 (S$2,848) per month, versus the Klang Valley average of RM5,183.
'Retail sales turnover is rising, but the percentage of growth is not as high as before,' said Regroup research manager Marlene Padan. The retail sector is fast becoming a 'tenant's market', she said, particularly for big-name operators. The Malaysian Retailers Association expects sales to expand 6.5 per cent this year. It said that in the second quarter of last year, the retail industry recorded 'surprising' growth of 10.2 per cent from RM52 billion in the same period of 2004. The Klang Valley accounts for almost RM14 billion or 27 per cent of this.
A retail player who did not want to be named agreed that the Bandar Utama/Petaling Jaya area has become diluted by numerous shopping centres that troll the same catchment area. Despite ever-full car parks at weekends, she said sales have slowed in the past two months since a near-20 per cent rise in petrol prices, with retailers big and small reporting almost a one-third drop in sales. 'Many people are just window shopping,' the player said.
Regroup reckoned sales turnover is already optimum for many retailers and that rent as a proportion of turnover will exceed 15 per cent soon as the market's dilution increases.
However, 'premier' shopping centres will have fewer problems raising rents. Suria KLCC boasts the highest average sales turnover in the country at RM117 per sq ft per month. Annual growth is consistent there and it is also where many retailers report their best performances. According to Regroup, sales turnover at some outlets there exceeds RM500 per sq ft per month. Beauty and wellness retailers lead the pack at RM833 per sq ft, with a shoe shop next at RM565 per sq ft.
Mid-Valley Megamall, which is in its second phase of expansion, is second best, with average monthly sales turnover of some RM60 per sq ft. Already, retailers are jostling to get into the new wing.

nazrey July 6th, 2009, 09:25 PM Putra Place auction on Aug 20
By Vasantha Ganesan
Published: 2009/07/07
A NEW date for the auction of the Putra Place, housing The Mall, the Legend Hotel and an office tower, has been fixed for August 20.
The reserve price for the building, located opposite the Putra World Trade Centre, has been set at RM634.5 million.
Putra Place is owned by Metroplex Bhd. The Mall is a shopping complex with eight floors, the office tower covers the 10th floor to the 33rd floor, while the 25-storey Legend Hotel includes serviced apartments and penthouses.
CIMB and RHB Investment Bank Bhd are agents to the group of banks that gave a loan to Metroplex. Metroplex could not repay its loan, which led to the sale of its property.
An advertisement that appeared last Monday said the public auction will take place at 10am at the Auction Room of the High Court of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur.
The auctioneer for the said property is Raya Realty.
The commercial property was first put up for auction in April 2008, at a reserve price of RM705 million, but no bids were received. The price was then cut by 10 per cent to RM634.5 million.
The price of an auctioned property usually falls by a tenth every time there is no bid.
However, in the case of Putra Place, the auction did not take place on January 20, as the judge felt that for a property this size, a wider net has to be cast to attract more interest.
April 16 was set as the new auction date, giving time for more advertisements locally and abroad.
The judge instructed CIMB to advertise the auction in Canada, Los Angeles and Indonesia, while Metroplex will do the same in Hong Kong (with circulation in China), Taiwan, Japan and in Singapore.
Again, the scheduled April 16 auction did not happen because Metroplex on January 22 obtained a restraining order. As such the advertisements, which were supposed to be put up twice before April 16, did not appear.

Mystery shopping is a tool used to measure the quality of a retail service, or gather specific information about products and services.
COMPANIES that conduct mystery shopping services - by hiring mystery shoppers to evaluate the quality of their services are less likely to be impacted by the current economic decline, since they are more focused on delivering top-notch customer service.
A Kuala Lumpur-based mystery shopping provider estimates that it costs 10 times more to get a new customer than to keep an existing one.
"While many organisations will be looking to cut costs in this current economic climate, a grave mistake will be to cut back on costs relating to customer service delivery," Customer Experience Lab managing director Joan Shunmugam told Business Times.
Customer Experience Lab designs and deploys investigative and exploratory programmes at brand touch-points to provide its customers with valuable insights from customer perspectives.
Mystery shopping is a tool used to measure the quality of a retail service, or gather specific information about products and services.
In many countries, including Malaysia, mystery shoppers are hired to pose anonymously as customers, to evaluate and report on the service levels of a company's outlets.
"The information gathered from the shoppers' reports, once analysed, becomes a powerful business intelligence tool," Shumugam said.
"The feedback provided by mystery shoppers is often the key ingredient in a business on-going effort to improve its standard of customer service."
Shumugam said most companies in Malaysia that engaged in mystery shopping are multinational brands, "that know the importance of getting into the minds of their customers, daily".
Globally, customer-driven businesses which require their operations, facilities, product delivery and service performance evaluated by mystery shoppers include the oil and gas sector, government agencies, airlines, hotels, hypermarkets, franchise operators, retailers and banks.
An example of a mystery shopping audit given by Shunmugam was one where employees of a retail chain with 100 stores were found to be weak in their selling skills.
"The company had then initiated and implemented the necessary changes and training to improve the performance of its sales employees.
"If this chain of 100 stores had an average of 75 daily transactions with an average price item of RM30, increasing the up-selling skills by 30 per cent and achieving a conversion rate of RM25 would result in an increase in annual sales of over RM6 million over the entire chain."

STOCKHOLM: Ikea, the Swedish furniture chain, said Sunday it never expected such a backlash after switching typeface in its latest catalog.
The company's decision to make its first such font change in 50 years - from the iconic Futura typeface to the Verdana one - has caused a worldwide reaction on the Internet.
The catalog, which the company advertises as the world's most printed book, was distributed last month.
"We're surprised," said Ikea spokeswoman Camilla Meiby.
"But I think it's mainly experts who have expressed their views, people who are interested in fonts. I don't think the broad public is that interested."
Verdana was invented by Microsoft for use on a computer screen, not on paper.
Its wide, open letters with space between characters are designed to increase legibility on small computer screens.
Ikea said that in order to reach many people in many different ways, it needed a font that works in both digital and print media.
"Verdana is a simple, cost-effective font which works well in all media and languages," Meiby said.
But some Ikea fans were outraged, finding Verdana less elegant than Futura.
The online forum Typophile ended its first post with the words, "It's a sad day."
A week ago, Romanian design consultant Marius Ursache started an online petition called "Ikea, please get rid of Verdana."
On Sunday, the campaign had more than 2,700 signatures.
The move to a simple, modern-looking font also fueled Twitter posts such as "Ikea, stop the Verdana madness" and "Words can't describe my disgust."
Swedish art director Christoph Comstedt disagreed.
"I don't think the average consumer will react, maybe people in the advertising business," Comstedt said.
