Hey Dennis, this is what happened in Times Square where you saw it on the webcam...

Chunk Of Glass Falls From Times Square Building Onto Taxi

NOVEMBER 05TH, 2004

Firefighters say a chunk of glass fell from 7 Times Square onto a taxi Friday, injuring both the driver and a passenger.

It's not known if Friday's gusty winds played a role.

The Department of Buildings says they responded to a call from 7 Times Square and that a window pane that covers both the 46th and 47th floors was missing.

Both the driver and the passenger in the cab were taken to St. Claire's Hospital with minor injuries.

That building's evil. A short while ago an elevator crashed into the ceiling and killed a 43-year old dude. Almost as evil as Canadian Imperial Bank on Fifth.

Thankfully no one was killed. The samething happened in Chicago last year but it did kill somebody. They really need to make sure those windows are secure.

It's been a few years since any major pieces of buildings fell to the street in Chicago. Five or six years ago, a window fell out the the CNA building killing a mother and child walking down the street. And about three years ago, a 1200 pound chunk of limestone fell off of the 18th floor of the "One N LaSalle" building crushing a car, but no injuries. As a result of some of the problems with buildings crumbling onto the streets, Chicago has a very strict ordinance requiring building owners to do inspections every four years, and make needed repairs. This explains why you see scaffolding on the sidewalks all over city center. Chicago's extreme weather reeks havoc on buildings. That freeze/thaw cycle is quite destructive, expecially to terra cotta exteriors.

We did experience a tragedy when window washing equipment was blown off of the Hancock Tower a year or two ago. We had a horrific wind storm, and the scaffolding wasn't properly secured. The wind just wipped it around shattering windows, and then sending it to the street where it hit a cab and I think there was at least one death involved.

>EDIT< I just checked, the windstorm at the Hancock was in March 02, and it killed three people.

hella good

ITS NOT AN EVIL BUILDING!!!

its my third favorite in the whole of new york. its not the buildings fault. All these type of accidents are all down to human error. If you want to blame anyone, blame the buildiers!

Wasn't that at the Ernest & Young building?

7 Times Square is the Times Square Tower (not sure if it's still u/c?)

wow, it's the second time i've heard of stuff falling out from this building. hopefully the windows are not threatening to break off like what happened to john hancock tower in boston after it was built.

yeah, that elevator incident is from ernst & young. but cibc is definitely an unlucky building too. that building suffered a fire, a crane collapse, and a construction elevator crash that killed two while the building was being built.

Once I've seen them maneuvr some crane thing on the top during construction. It was scary as hell. A several story tall metal tower thing was suspended above 42nd Street (which was closed to traffic, thank God they had enough brains to do that, at least) from the top of the building, and two ropes went down to the street. Two guys were pulling on one rope and another side was casually held bu another worker. A small wind gust could've torn the rope out of his hands, and hell knows what would've happened. I could just see the headline "A huge tower thing crashes down on the 42nd Street below, killing a few workers and damaging a whole lotta infrastructure". THank God the building's, like, completed by now.
