Let's hope this project gets on the road soon. Already two other Tier II cities, Jaipur and Cochin are getting metro rail, if Surat gets it too, it will be three.:banana:

World, am not including Ahmedabad here because it falls in the list of 8 largest cities in India. By Tier II, I meant all cities outside this list. Hence, Surat, Jaipur and Kochi are Tier II cities.

Ahmedabad and Pune are still classified in Tier II cities category alongwith Surat, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Patna and Nagpur. Only 6 cities - Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad are classified Tier I cities. While Kochi, Indore, Bhopal, Vadodara, Rajkot, etc. comes under Tier III category.

Friend, don't think what Wikipedia says is always correct..... Its public editable data and as you see there is a warning note left that information made there is too old and requires revision

The one you reported is based on Govt HRA. Even that now considers Surat along with Jaipur, Kochi etc as Y category or Tier 2...

There are multiple ways to look at it... Some look at population level alone. Some look at economy growth. Some look at Job creation, while some look at real estate activity. There is no fixed indicator etc....

In general parlance, TIER 1 are global metropolitian hubs like Mumbai, Delhi, Blr, Chennai etc creating its own identity and global market profile. Tier 2 can be regional Metropolitian, with high growth rates influencing the region.... Surely Surat, Ahmedabad have its regional potentiality to be said as TIER 2, along with Kochi, Jaipur, Coimbatore, Vizag etc.......

The above is not classification of Tier.

Only Mumbai, Delhi and Banglore are Tier 1 cities.
Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmadabad, Pune are Tier 2 cities.
Kochi, Jaipur etc are Tier 3 cities to say the least. No way these cities are match to the Tier 2 cities mentioned above.

http://www.indianground.com/upcoming-cities.aspx

Now the defination could vary But as far as I know its combination of Population and City status for making to the Tier list. That's why Bangalore is in Tier1 and Kolkata in Tier2 even though its much Bigger than Bangalore.

I love how everyone loves to come up with their own way of classifying cities as long as their city is in the top bracket... Bangalore is tier 1 but Chennai and Kolkata are Tier 2? I would love to hear the scientific explanation behind this one..

but that aside.. since this is a 'mass transport' project, I would imagine things like population and population density would be the deciding factors for classification...

Ya I am also surprised at Bangalore being Tier1 city and Not Kolkata. As far as I know real estate growth is one of the factor.

Skudubai, cracked up like anything when I read your comment! Good one.

Having said that, I think the old model of saying that there are 4 metropolitan cities and 70 % people living in agriculture isn't valid anymore. You have a city like Gurgaon for example which has 300 MNCs/big companies HQs and attracts migrants from all over India which is not a Metro, but has 30-40 lakh people. In any calculation, Delhi and Mumbai will take the top two slots. Populationwise, Kolkata comes third and Chennai 4th, Bangalore 5th but as far as economic activity, construction, economic growth, business is concerned, I think Bangalore would probably take third place and Chennai 4th and Kolkata probably 5th or even 6th, after Hyderabad. Pune and Ahmedabad are in population terms the 8th and 7th largest cities respectively.

haha... glad you got a chuckle out of it..

As I said.. the classification depends on what you want to do I guess.

If you were planning on opening a store, you would classify based on potential customers (Income, purchasing power, Population, Density). If you want to set up a business, you would look at office availability, infrastructure and not necessarily population. You use the statistics that are relevant to you. Once classification is never useful!

I think one factor for classing Kolkata as Tier 2 and Bangalore as Tier I might be that today, Bangalore might have more business activity than Kolkata. There might be a bigger real estate industry, more corporate HQs, more professionals and so on. That's just my take.

Now, a Metro train on Surat civic body’s radar (http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report_now-a-metro-train-on-surat-civic-bodys-radar_1674875)

With Surat well on the road to becoming a cosmopolitan city, the need for an effective public transport system is always felt. While work on BRTS is going on, a Metro Train project is also on the radar of SMC.

To ease problems in the mass transport system, the plan to develop a metro rail network has been mooted by SMC. The idea is to construct a metro network connecting important parts of the city. This would be on routes where BRTS buses will not be plying.

Civic officials have started the process of identifying a suitable consultant who can check feasibility of metro rail in Surat and also identify income-earning routes. "We have decided to prepare a feasibility report of metro rail, before preparing a blueprint of the project. Along with availability of land, funding will also be an issue. However, SMC is capable of implementing the project, once positive signals come in the feasibility report," Jatin Shah, city engineer, said.

According to Shah, the metro rail in Mumbai and Delhi will be studied while designing the project in Surat. For this, a team of civic engineers will visit both cities to study their metro rail concept and problems faced, if any.

The metro rail is Bhimji Patel's idea. He is the chairman of the standing committee of SMC.Patel has made a provision of Rs1 crore for checking feasibility of the project.

"Surat desperately needs a fast and safe public transport system. Absence of such a system has resulted in congestion on the roads," Bhimji Patel said. Sources said that SMC is keen on developing a mono rail system in the city, as cost incurred is less compared to underground metro train. In mono rail, tracks are laid upon pillars and electric powered coaches (mostly self driven) run on them. A minimum of one coach can be operated on the track at one time.

Metro rail project on track, Surat Municipal Corporation sanctions study:)

SURAT: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has sanctioned Rs 1 crore to conduct a feasibility study for its metro rail project.

"This rail link will be a part of an integrated rapid mass transport system along with Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) to cater to the future needs of the city," said standing committee chairman Bhimji Patel. It is estimated that for a 100 km of metro rail in Surat city, about Rs 17,500 crore would have to be spent.

Once the master plan for integrated development of Surat Urban Development Authority ( SUDA) is ready by early 2013, the announcement of the metro rail project will be made by the chief minister in the city.

The routes being looked at are Surat-Kamrej, Sayan-Sachin, Surat-Navsari road and the bank of river Tapi.

"This is not going to be a part of Rs 1 lakh crore multi-model Gujarat Metro Grid (GMG) project," a senior SMC official said. GMG has a 20-year vision which encompasses metro rail, mono rail and light weight transportation system in major cities of Gujarat, he said.

"As far as Surat is concerned, we need the metro to link areas, which are not going to be covered by BRTS," said city engineer Jatin Shah.

"We are conducting a feasibility study on the metro rail project for the city," said municipal commissioner MK Das.

:omg: This is the greatest news of 2012. I used to believe that SMC and SuDA would not emphasize on this. But Picture is changed. As announcement was made to provide Rs.1 crore for feasibility-viability study. And yes, its going to materialize..
And what a huge network for Metro estimated. i.e. 100 km worth Rs. 17,500 cr (Of That 35 km alone for Surat-Navsari route).
But, have to wait longer as SuDA revised Development plan is awaited.
Btw, Its overall good news that initial steps are taken.:)

Congress or BJP, what matters is the will of the state government to get things done. Haryana is a Congress ruled state but government is hardly taking any steps to improve infra in Gurgaon at all. :ohno: OTOH, Rajasthan is also a Congress ruled state but the raj govt has worked to develop Jaipur. Now that Surat Metro has been approved, Gujarat government will have to work on it and am hoping they do so. The fact that Congress doesn't help BJP-ruled states is a fact,:bash: but I am sure the gujarat government will overcome that. :)

Though Gujarat government announced Go-ahead to Surat metro rail project, but what central cabinet will review Surat Metro project? Will central Government approve?
Still it would be interesting to know when the DPR consultancy will be delegated? I think Delhi Metro Rail(DMRC) would be the one.
I hope SMC allot DPR consultancy work as soon as possible, so that this report forwarded to State govt and Central govt for appproval.

Surat : The state government has cleared a proposal for starting metro rail services in the city. An Intimation Letter to this effect has been received by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).

Confirming the receipt of the letter, Municipal Commissioner M K Das said, “The letter received will be presented to the Standing Committee. Thereafter, further procedure will be initiated.”

Central government, too, has been reportedly informed of the decision.

The sources claimed that the Gujarat Urban Development Company (GUDC) has been made the Technical Nodal Agency which shall prepare the Feasibility Report in coordination with the SMC. The civic body is also likely to seek help from the Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board (GIDB) as the agency had prepared a Feasibility Report and an Initial Study Report earlier.

Surat Municipal Corporation confident of making metro rail project a reality by 2017-18 (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/surat/Surat-Municipal-Corporation-confident-of-making-metro-rail-project-a-reality-by-2017-18/articleshow/15135256.cms)

SURAT: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) is confident of making the metro rail project a reality in the city by 2017-18. The confidence comes on the heels of guarantee of 20 per cent assistance from Centre as soon as the detailed planned report (DPR) is approved by Union urban development ministry and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation's offer of assistance to the project.

Municipal commissioner Manoj Das attended a joint meeting along with representatives of eight other cities with Union urban development ministry officials in New Delhi on Monday. Das said, "We have number of town planning (TP) schemes on draft level. Therefore, it will be easy for us to acquire the required land for the project." Top officials of Jaipur, Kochi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Surat, Patna and Lucknow attended the meeting.

Surat is looking at 100 km of integrated metro rail line. The population of the twin cities of Surat-Navsari is estimated at 1.20 crore in 2026. The project has a cost bearing of Rs 150 crore per km for rail on ground, Rs 250 crore per km on elevated corridor and Rs 400 crore per km in under ground section. The city also plans to link BRTS to the proposed metro. The 100 km of metro rail will incur a cost of Rs 15,000 crore.

Central Government recently said that every city with over 20 lakh population should have metro rail and had conducted a survey of metro rail facility in 12 cities, which included Surat and Ahmedabad. The working committee on urban transport estimated an expenditure in next five years for these 12 cities to the tune of Rs 175 crore per km for the construction of metro rail. Central government plans to disburse 50 per cent of finance for the projects in 12th Five Year Plan.

SMC to check feasibility of four Metro routes

Surat Municipal Corporation has identified four routes to be developed under Metro Rail. The civic body has also sanctioned amount of Rs1 crore for checking feasibility of these four routes and if the report confirm feasibility, civic body will initiate process to prepare DPR of this project.

The four routes, identified by the standing committee are the 19 km route from Dumas Resorts to Sarthana Octroi Naka (this route is being developed under BRTS and metro will be developed alongside), Sayan to Surat, Outer ring road and along banks of river Tapi from Kamrej to Ambika niketan.

“We have selected these routes after considering all aspects. In future, when Surat’s city limit will expand and people need to travel to important points, Metro will prove helpful for commuting. We have allocated a fund of Rs1 crore for preparing feasibility report of these routes,” said Bhimji Patel, chairman of the standing committee. He added that four routes will cater maximum population in Surat and those living in nearby areas.

Following the decision, SMC has initiated process for selecting a suitable consultant to prepare feasibility report. It has asked different consultants in India to provide their proposals for the project. Meanwhile, SMC has created Metro Cell with city-based engineer Jatin Shah as its head, to smoothen works related to the project.

SURAT: To make Metro rail project a reality in the city sooner then the expectations, local civic body has decided to seek approval from State government to call for expression of interest (EOI) in very near future. "With intent to build transport infrastructure for the future city, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has assigned priority to all the projects of this sector including proposed Metro rail and BRTS." said a top ranking officer from SMC.

"Our aim is top provide reliable, cost effective, efficient and convenient public transport by allowing the city to grow horizontally so that people can live more comfortably in little far away places and thrive ." said Manoj Das municipal Commissioner . "This will reduce congestion and density of population in urban part of the city." He added. According to him once the DPR is prepared and EOI are called for a special purpose vehicle will be formed for the Surat Metro rail which will govern all the construction, building , running and maintenance issues related to metro in the city.

It is very clear from the queries that civic bodies receive that the enthusiasm among the people for Metro is tremendous. "We receive at lease one serious inquiry from the concerned party who wishes to jump in fray for the project on daily basis from last one month." Said a top official on the condition of anonymity. "But SMC is looking in terms of proven track record of setting up the metro rail network in places like Japan, Singapore and some European countries." He added At present nearly 180 cities of the world have their own metro rails and in another 15 years time this number is likely to reach 400.

In India at present only metro cities have metro but the number is likely to triple as 12 second tier cities are given permission to set up their own metro rails.

Surat one step closer to Metro Train project (http://deshgujarat.com/2013/01/28/surat-one-step-closer-to-metro-train-project/)

On 11th of August last year, Gujarat Chief Minister in a function held at Surat announced state government’s decision to approve the Metro train project for the city of Surat.

The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials had then shared the details that the proposed rail link will be a part of an integrated rapid mass transport system along with Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) to cater to the future needs of the city.

Today, in a budget draft of year 2013-14, the SMC has made provision of Rs five crore for feasibility studies and detail project report of Surat Metro. This is one step closer to the ambitious project.

Last year, it was estimated that for a 100 km of metro rail in Surat city, about Rs 17,500 crore would have to be spent. The estimate can go even higher this year.
