The Port of Manila (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manila) is the largest seaport (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seaport) in the Philippines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippines), and is the premier international shipping gateway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port) to the country. It is located in the vicinity of Manila Bay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manila_Bay).

Amenities

The Port of Cagmat is also known as Manila International Cargo Terminal and is operated by International Container Terminal Services Inc. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Container_Terminal_Services_Inc.) It is one of Asia's major seaports and one of the Philippines's most active ports.
In a 2005 study, the Port of Manila was listed as the world's 31st most active container port (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Container_port), moving 2,665 twenty-foot equivalent units (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty-foot_equivalent_unit) (TEU) worth of containers that year.

The bay entrance is 19 kilometres (12 mi) wide and expands to a width of 48 kilometres (30 mi). Mariveles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariveles,_Bataan), in the province of Bataan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bataan), is an anchorage just inside the northern entrance, and Sangley Point (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sangley_Point) is the former location of Cavite Naval Base (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavite_Naval_Base).

On either side of the bay are volcanic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcano) peaks topped with tropical (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical) foliage. 40 kilometres (25 mi) to the north is the Bataan Peninsula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bataan_Peninsula) and to the south is the province of Cavite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavite).

The port's main areas are known as Manila North (seaport code MNN), Manila South (MNS) and Manila (MNL).

Transportation

Jeep terminals in Pier 15 come from Malanday & Karuhatan in Valenzuela (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valenzuela), Monumento/MCU in Caloocan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caloocan), Retiro/La Loma, Project 2 & 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, Philcoa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_Coconut_Authority) & Fairview in Quezon City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quezon_City), and Blumentritt & Dapitan in Manila (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manila).

History

The Port of Manila and the area dates back to Spanish and pre-Spanish rule of the Philippine Islands. It is recorded that Manila and the Philippines had trade relations with most neighboring countries at least as far back as the 9th to 12th centuries. Major trading partners included China (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China) and Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan), with ties to India (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India) through the areas that are now Malaysia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia) and Indonesia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesia).

The Spanish-controlled Port of Manila handled trade primarily with China and other East Asian countries, with Mexico, with Arab countries, and directly with Spain from the 16th to mid-19th century CE when the port was opened to all trade ships.

The port was also the staging point for the Manila galleons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manila_galleons), a state-monopoly shipping line running to Acapulco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acapulco) and back, which operated virtually continuously from the 16th to the early 19th century CE.
Manila Bay was the setting for the Battle of Manila Bay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Manila_Bay_%281898%29) in 1898 between United States and Spanish forces, and the siege of Corregidor Island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corregidor) by invading Japanese forces in 1942.

BoI approves P14.9B North Harbor project (http://business.inquirer.net/45505/boi-approves-p14-9b-north-harbor-project)
The Board of Investments (BoI) has approved the registration of the P14.89-billion investment by the Manila North Harbor Port Inc., for the development and management of the largest domestic port in the Philippines.

Trade Undersecretary and BoI managing head Adrian S. Cristobal Jr. said the proposed Manila North Harbor Port project would involve equipping the port with new cargo handling machinery and the upgrade of information technology systems.

“Over the next five years, the project is estimated to provide 49 percent net value added for the services they will provide. Commercial operations of the North Harbor project began last month and are estimated to create 1,448 jobs,” Cristobal said in a statement.

Cristobal added that the project, which would address foreign and domestic loading and unloading of goods and passengers, would boost the country’s cargo capacity.

Cargo volume at Manila North Harbor Port, located at Tondo, Manila, is growing at an average of 5 percent a year.

The project is expected to be completed in six years.

to remove cargo trucks and help decongest metro manila, both south harbor and manila international container port should be closed. asian terminals of south harbor also operates the port of batangas (sta. clara), while ictsi of north harbor also operates the subic container port (nct1 & 2). they can just transfer their cargo handling equipments and facilities there. said ports are state-of-the-art and even supported by expressways but currently underutilized. majority of factories, warehouses, exporters and importers are located outside of metro manila anyway.:)

Busiest seaport to triple its capacity by next year

(philstar.com) Updated April 03, 2012 12:00 AM Comments (0)

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - The capacity of Manila North Harbor, the Philippines' busiest domestic seaport, will be tripled when a new modern passenger terminal will rise next year, port officials revealed yesterday.

The passenger terminal, which will cost P200 million ($4.66 million) to build, is part of a large two-year expansion program for the Manila North Harbor.

"The concessionaire will expand the capacity to 3,000 passengers a day... today, the capacity is only at 1,000," Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) General Manager Juan Sta. Ana told reporters today.

The first phase of North Harbor's expansion, as approved by the PPA, would involve the expansion of existing wharves and acquisition of new cranes to increase its cargo throughput capacity.

The new passenger terminal will be completed by early next year. Construction started last month. The rest of the works in the first phase would be done by the end of 2013.

The Manila North Harbor is run by the Manila North Harbor Port Inc. (MNHPI), a joint venture between the Romero family's Harbor Center Port Terminal Inc. (65 percent) and San Miguel Corp.-led Petron Corp. (35 percent).

P-Noy inaugurates $200-M port facility in Manila
Manila, Philippines - President Aquino yesterday inaugurated the $200-million newly constructed port facility of the International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) at the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) in Manila.

Aquino led officials, employees and guests of ICTSI led by its president Enrique Razon Jr. in pouring champagne over the facility’s marker, formally opening the ICTSI Berth 6’s operations to the public.

Berth 6 adds 300 meters of additional port area and 12 hectares of container storage space to the existing facility, thereby expanding operations and services at MICT from 1.9-million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a measure used for capacity in container transportation, to 2.5-million TEUs. Tension at turnover of Manila Harbour Centre
MANILA, Philippines – Tension rose at the Manila Harbour Centre in R-10, Manila, after the sheriff of the Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) tried to serve the order to R-II Builders to immediately turn over control and management of the 79-hectare property to business locators operating in the area.

The order was given by Judge Lyhila Abella-Aquino after dismissing R-II 's motion to quash writ of execution issued in favor of the locators of the Manila Harbour Centre Industrial Park Association Incorporated (MHCIPA).

MHCIPA is the association of locators at the 79-hectare property in Vitas, Tondo, Manila, which the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council appointed in 2010 to manage Manila Harbour Centre in place of R-II.

The case stemmed from the Smokey Project undertaken by R-II Builders.

While the Builders failed to fully fund the building of socialized housing in the former Smokey Mountain dumpsite, it was able to gain control of the industrial park, which the Courts, including the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court, deemed to properly belong to the government.

Security personnel of Manila Harbour Centre, however, refused to allow the entry of officers of Home Guaranty Corporation who were to supervise the turnover of all common areas, utilities and facilities.

Officers of Manila Police District were also deployed to area to ensure peace and order.

Situation at the Manila Harbour Center is now at a standstill while the Manila Trial Court sheriff is reporting to the Court the service of judicial order.

ATI Plans P4.2-B Port Investments

By Bernie Cahiles-Magkilat

Asian Terminals Inc. (ATI) is planning to invest P4.2 billion over the next three years to pursue various expansion plans of its existing port operations in the country on back of brighter economic prospects.

ATI vice president Sean Perez, in a presentation at the Philippine Ports and Shipping Conference in Makati on Thursday, said the investments would improve the capabilities and capacities of existing ports that include Port of Manila (South), Port of Batangas, depots in Laguna and Sta. Mesa, Manila as well as the integrated port in General Santos City.

For one, Perez said the $300-million South Harbor Development Plan earlier set is on schedule.

The Port of Manila (South) alone, which is a core business, has added 3,500 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the fourth quarter of 2012 due to the sudden surge of volume.

This particular port is also geared for further expansion as its capacity is expected to hit 4 million TEUs in three years.

At present, the port can handle 1 million TEUs in containerized cargo; 1 million metric tons in general cargo and 300,000 TEUs in domestic cargo.

Apart from the expansion of pier 3, Perez said ATI would also acquire new equipment including two rubber-tired gantry cranes and one quay crane.

Also, the Batangas container terminal with a capacity to handle 300,000 TEUs is very competitive as an alternative port to Manila particularly following the grant of discount on fees on cargoes that use the port.

Meantime, domestic operator Manila North Harbour Port, Inc. (MNHPI) said it is pursuing its P6-billion modernization program wherein the first phase is expected to be completed in May this year.:cheers:

In his presentation, MNHPI chief executive officer Richard Barclay said the dedicated domestic freight port in 2010 handled 654,000 TEUs but rose to 840,000 TEUs in 2012.

Barclay said the volume could grow to a million TEUs this year.

The first part of the three-phased modernization project would increase the port capacity to 2.8 million TEUs from the current one million TEUs.

This means increasing its passenger terminal capacity to 2,000 seats from the existing 1,400 seats.

This project involves the construction of the new passenger terminal and operations center before end this year. The succeeding phases of development would depend on the volume of trade this domestic port, Barclay said.

At present, the existing port handles 800,000 TEUs annually, 2 million tons of break bulk cargoes and 800,000 passengers annually.
