The scenic town of Thrissur, between the Kochi (74 km south) and Palakkad (79 km northeast), is a right place to discover the cultural riches of central Kerala. Thrissur was once the capital of the Cochin state, ruled by many rulers and dynasties starting with zamorins of Kozhikode, tipu sultan of Mysore and Europeans including the dutch and the british. Today it is the cultural capital of Kerala, home to several influential art institutions such as the Kerala Kala Mandalam, the Kerala Sahitya Academy and Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy. It is one of the few places in Kerala where you are guaranteed Kathakali dance performance, both authentic and abridged tourists versions.

Thrissur Sightseeing :

Vadakkunathan Kshetram temple :

Vadakkunathan Kshetram is one of the oldest temple in the town. The temple was built in the 12 th century and consists of fifteen shrine. Depicting the classical example of the Keralan style of architecture, the temple boosts of the numerous pieces of art and decorative murals. Inside the walls, he grassy compound is a striking apsidal shrine dedicated to Ayappa. Non Hindus are not allowed to enter the temple.

Festivals :

The Vadakkunathan Kshetram temple is the venue of the popular Thrissur Pooram which falls in the month of April or May. It is the Kerala's biggest and most colorful temple festival. Devotees from far and wide throng the Pooram. The unique feature of this festival is the ceremonial processions carrying the images of the deities of 41 neighboring temples.

Eating :

Thrissur provides a goos range of hotels and restaurants offering Indian, Western and Chinese food along with the authentic Keralan lunches. There are several inexpensive hotels clustered near the Round.

Shopping :

Thrissur is a good place to pick up the Keralan crafts The main shopping area is on the Round, on Round West, the Kerala State Handicraft Emporium specializes in wood. Than there is Co-optex that sells the good range of hand loom cloth. At Chemmanur's Round South, near the elite hotel, you will find a good variety of carved wooden elephant type souvenirs.



Thrissur is the jumping off point for some of the Kerala's most popular destinations. Some of them are as follows :

Irinjalakuda :

Irinjalakuda is small village located at the distance of 20 kms from Thrissur. Although there not much to see in the town, but it is famous for the Koodalmanikyam temple, dedicated to Bharata, the brother of Rama. Only the Hindus are allowed to enter the temple. While making a visit to the temple, men must wear a dhoti. The temple consists of the Kuttambalam theater within its outer courtyard that was built to afford an unimpeded view for the maximum number of spectators. Interiors are decorated with the painted wood carvings of the mythological animals and stories from the various epics. Irinjalakuda
also has two beautiful churches that are worth a visit.

Guruvayur :

33 kms from Thrissur lies, Guruvayur, which is renowned for the Sri Krishna temple, that attracts pilgrims from all over the world. According to the legends, it is created by Guru -the preceptor of the gods, and Vayu, god of wind. The temple was built in the 16th century and is known for the healing powers. There are 28 annual festivals celebrated in the temple, the most important of which are Ekadashi and Ulsavam. The festival of Ekadashi falls in the month of November/December, marked by the caparisoned elephants outside the temple -the exterior of the temple is decorated with the tiny flames of innumerable oil lamps. The festival of Ulsavam is highlighted by the elephant race.

Cheruthuruthy :

The village of Cheruthuruthy , 32 kms from Thrissur is famous as the home Kerala Kalamandalam, which is the training school for Kathakali and other indigenous Keralan performing arts. It was founded in the year 1927 by the revered Keralan poet Vallathol and patronized at first by the Raja of Cochin. Kalamandalam artists perform in the great theaters of the world. It remains open from 9:30 to 1pm.

Natana Kairali Research and Performing Center for Traditional Arts :

Natana Kairali Research and Performing Center for Traditional Arts, LIES 20 Kms from Thrissur near Irinjalakuda. It offers a training in traditional arts including rare forms of puppetry and dance. Even the short appreciation courses are available for the foreigners.

Lalur temple made by Cholas, MGS

LALUR Karthyayini Bhagavathy Temple where the flag of the Thrissur Pooram is hoisted before any other nine temples nearby was yesterday visited by the renowned historian and former chairman of Indian Council of Historical Research Dr MGS Narayanan. He visited the temple to determine its oldness, upon the request of the natives.

According to MGS, the temple may be 700 to 800 years old. "The temple might have been built in AD 1300 or AD 1400. From the sculpture works of the temple, it can be assumed that it was built during the time of Cholas. We can say nothing unless a detailed study is conducted on the issue," he said.

Dr Narayanan added the same sculptural works of the Lalur temple can be seen at the Vadakkumnathan Temple and Peruvanam Temple.

He added he will request the archaeological department to check whether there are any records about the temple on the history of temples. He advised the temple committee to consult the experts before conducting any more religious rituals.

The temple was in so bad condition that none of the sculptures were visible. The renovation of the sculptures was done by workers from Thanjavoor who have experience in the field.

Lalur temple has been left almost to negligence for the past some years due to the lack of income. The believers formed a committee and under the leadership of the committee started the restoration. As a part of it, they are conducting 'Naveekarana Kalasam' from March 29 to April 8.

The reconstruction works are done by a Chennai-based company, Chennai Construction Group. The company is itself sponsoring some of the construction works of the temple. According to the temple authorities, around 35 lakhs has already been spent on renovation.


This is a good information. The district as well as corporation administration should focus on this point in order to develop tourism in city and district.

Thrissur Zoo or State Museum & Zoo, Thrissur (formerly the Trichur Zoo) is a 13.5-acre (5.5 ha) zoo that opened in 1885 in the heart of Thrissur city, Kerala, India. It is one of the oldest zoos in the country, and is home to the wide variety of animals, reptiles, and birds. The zoo compound includes a natural history museum and an art museum that showcase the socio-cultural heritage of the region. The Thrissur Zoo is 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) from the Thrissur city center and is open from 10:00 AM till 6:30 PM, except Mondays. Still and video cameras are allowed in the park for a fee.

The zoo includes a Zoological Garden, Botanical Garden, Art Museum, and Natural History Museum in its compound.

Future :

A new home for the zoo is being constructed in nearby Puthur, and will expand the size of the zoo from its current 13.5 acres (5.5 ha) to 306 acres (124 ha). The new zoo will be close to the Peechi Dam, Kerala Forest Research Institute, Kerala Agricultural University College of Forestry, and College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences.

Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary
This sanctuary was founded in 1984 and situated about 32 kilometers southeast of Trichur city in Kerala. You can reach Chimmony by taking a deviation from Amballoor junction on the NH 47 National highway, which is 25 kilometers away. An artificial lake has been formed by the construction of a dam across the Chimmony River. This lake has an area of 10 sq.kms and a depth of 20 mts. The lake encircled by Ghat Mountains, which accommodates the Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary, is a breathtaking spectacle.

Elephant Camp at Punnathurkotta,Guruvayur,Thrissur

The Elephant Camp is located in Punnathur Kotta, at a distance of 3 km from the Guruvayur Temple. This Elephant Camp is one of its kinds in the world and is considered to be one of the largest elephant sanctuaries housing around 60 elephants. Vilangan Hills,T hrissur

Vilangan Hills or Vilangan Kunnu, is a 50-acre (20 ha) beautiful green hillock located 5 km from the Thrissur city of Kerala state in India.
It is a popular picnic spot and recreation centre among the youngsters and old. The hill, which is covered in thick bush, gives a panoramic view of the whole Thrissur city from the top. From the top of the hill, one could have the marvellous sight of thousands of acres of green paddy fields intercepted by water-filled kole lands, streams and verdant villages below.

Why are these places open to tourism.. They can keep approvals and limit for number of tourist per day..

As Boating in small Kayaking boat will be really good in these spots...

The hystoric Maheswara temple, Koorkkenchery, Thrissur city

This is one of the temples , where Sree Narayana Gurudevan , did "Shiva Prathishta".

Peruvanam Mahadeva temple, is one of the fine temples in Kerala, just like Sree Vadakkunnatha temple. This temple has magnificent architectural monuments. The main idol is Lord Siva who is known as Ottayappan and Irattayappan in this temple. The idol Ottayappan is Hanuman, because he is believed to be the incarnation of Lord Siva. The "sree kovil" of Ottayappan is very high. You have to go to the upstairs around two floor . The "Sree kovil" of Irattayappan, is the big one . On the other side of Irattayappan, is Sree Parvathy. This temple is famous for Peruvanam pooram, which will be held in the coming month ie March, with in the days of Arattuppuzha pooram festival

^^there is also golden chariot in mookambika temple at Kollur also. Moreover this chariot is displayed for inaugural ceremony. There is a seperate room for keeping this chariot in the temple itself. It will be taken for ram navami celebrations only , I think, as part of ratholsavam ,in the temple.

To urakam itself 10kms from city limit. so in order to reach Karuvannur ,14 kms there. I think the nearest river/backwater is manalippuzha near Amballur which is only3-4kms from city limit(thalore). Otherwise canoli canal at Kandassaankadavu , around 8-9kms from city limit Chettupuzha
