TVMobile
© MediaCorp TV's TVMobile (http://www.tvmobile.com.sg)

A new subsidiary company of MediaCorp TV, TVMobile is the first in the world to use Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) technology to deliver high quality mobile TV programmes to public commuters. With broadcasts of real time financial data, news updates, weather reports, entertainment and critical information, TVMobile keeps commuters up-to-date even while they're on the go.

With the aim to become a leading regional outdoor advertising media and data broadcast provider, TVMobile offers advertisers and agencies an alternative platform to showcase new products and services. Its extensive audience reach makes it an effective media in communicating new national policies and promoting campaigns and events.

TVMobile can be found on 1,500 air-conditioned buses and in food courts.

Broadcasting hours for TVMobile channel are daily (Monday to Sunday) from 6:00 a.m to 12:00 midnight.

Does TVMobile enhance the bus ride of the commuter?
Being the first of its kind in the world and developed at great expense (we invested $50 million on this project) and efforts, TVMobile only serves to demonstrate our pioneering and risk-taking spirit to try out any service, which may be potentially beneficial to the public. A survey conducted by Research International Asia showed that commuters interviewed welcomed this additional service on their bus rides.

How do commuters benefit from this new service?

With the development of Digital TV technology, TVMobile is able to bring TV out of the homes and into public places. The objective is to introduce another quality service to Singaporeans. This service aims at providing commuters with updated real time news, infotainment programs and mission critical information while on the move. For the first time in 36 years of Singapore history, people on the move were able to catch NDP 2001 ‘Live’ while on the move.

What sort of measures are being taken to ensure that the audio level is set at a comfortable
level?
We have set up a 21-day cycle service check on the 1,500 air-conditioned SBS buses to ensure that the audio level is set at a comfortable level. In the event that there are problems, our engineers will rectify them immediately. For commuters who find the audio level too low or who prefer private listening they can use any radio receiver to tune in to 89.3FM for their own listening pleasure of our TVMobile programs.

Can a commuter change the channel on the bus?
No. Singapore is the first country to implement a commercial mobile DTV service and an island wide single frequency network transmission system. This means that broadcasts will be received on exactly the same frequency everywhere: there will be no need for the bus to retune as it moves around.

Can we receive TVMobile Channel from home?
Presently, TVMobile Channel cannot be received at home. However, if you are interested in receiving TVMobile Channel, you may contact our Business Development unit at 6357 5932 for further details.

How can we find out what programmes are showing on TVMobile Channel?
You can check the programme schedule of TVMobile for today and the following day on this website under Programming.

TVMobile's Infrastructure
TVMobile infrastructure currently has one main transmitting site and 9 filler transmitting sites located islandwide. The digital signal is carried via ATM and microwave transmitting medium to the main transmitting site before being re-transmitted to the 9 filler sites. TVMobile is currently received islandwide by 1,500 air conditioned SBS buses and at Suntec Fountain Food Terrace.

I HATE TV Mobile!

After a tiring, I want peace and quiet in the bus, not the booming sound of the TV! :bleep:

Should take pictures of the very old TIBS buses. Those very noisy old cranky ones which have sliding rear doors. There's still some around, more than 20 years old.

I doubt they would be around for much longer...
Saw one at Yishun.

During off peak hours, the volume is actually quite low, barely even noticable.

During peak hours however, the volume is somewhat higher, though its still okay on the ears. Even if it were just that tad louder during this time period, I still wouldn't mind cause they broadcast Channel NewsAsia's PrimeTime Morning. Quite informative, kinda perks me up the morning.

Overall, the volumes have really come down since the day it was introduced. I agree that it was quite annoying back then as the volume was very high and the reception was poor so there were occasional squeaks. But now the volume level now is actually quite satisfactory. In fact, sometimes I wish it were turned up just a lil bit more in the morning when they broadcast the news.

Back on the bus issue, actually the older 20 year old TIBS buses that you mentioned are NOT BEING SCRAPPED AT ALL. In fact, they have been given the new SMRT livery and even have Electronic Flip Dot Displays installed, like those you see on the newer SMRT/TIBS buses. They have even been installed with air conditioning. So in my opinion they are most likely going to be around for the next 5 years or so MINIMUM.

Well at least SMRT bothers to upgrades it small fleet of buses to ensure that all bus services are air conditioned, and are gradually installed Flip Dot electronic displays on board too.

SBS Transit still has many buses plying the roads non air conditioned. And 99% of its buses don't even have electronic flip dot displays. Kinda hard to see the service number at night.

And the new taxi companies dont even have websites so no pictures...

So in conclusion few few pictures...

Heh!! If you think that's overpriced.......... some shops in town are already reselling these models for $130/set.

$98 is quite reasonable considering how much these models are going for right now(look at those hk bus models). They do cost quite a bit to manufacture, expecially for those limited edition ones.

Cause many people don't have any appreciation for the older SMRT rolling stock. They should have.

Yup doubt the models sold by SBS Transit are selling well cause despite the fact that they are limited edition models, its been a year since NEL commenced service and they are still being sold. Big drawback, the price.

If they manufactured the train models in smaller sizes they would be cheaper (contrary to what Kit said) cause when a train model is small, they don't have to spend additional resources, hence driving up costs, in paying particular attention to the train interior details, they can just make do with the train exterior details. This can be the affordable version.

But if people want models of a larger scale and with a more detailed design, they can still purchase the more expensive version. Since railway train models that move on tracks are cheap, they can install the same cheap motors on these NEL train models so they can move.

The existing NEL Train Models are very detailed, both in its exterior and interiors (You can see the seats).

If you made the train smaller, you can don't even bother about making the interiors, hence saving costs and being cheaper. You are basically just making the shell of the train and not the interior designs too.

Why is heirloom a gay?

If you want a full length trainset either get those cheapo ones at the pasar malam for under 20 dollars, full length...haha...or more expensive build it yourself LEGO ones for about 100 dollars.

So its expected that real sized models will be expensive. Guess not only does it cost them money to manufacture train models to look a tad more real than pasar malam or LEGO ones but also perhaps they need to pay for the permission to be granted from Alstom to use their train design.

The cost of making a die cast model, more often than not, is determined by the level of detail and not size. I can come up with a dozen of examples indicating more detail but smaller die cast models actually cost more. Amount of recources put together to make a small but detailed model can exceed that of a bigger model. Many times, just because the model is bigger doesn't means its packed with more details. Making really detailed small models are not technically impossible but takes more time to detail and of course, will cost more.

There isn't really a point to make a really detailed interior and "make do" with the exterior. What people are going after is a piece of reality. Modellers strive to build them as close to the real thing as possible irregardless of what kind of detail you get. If you want to pay less, you get a less detailed model but the level of detail is uniform throughout. Vice versa applies but I can safely tell you...... manufacturers have been paying more attention to exterior details more than interior because on the shelves, that's what sells the models.

Kit

I think you haven't come across some smaller models that equal, if not exceeds bigger models in terms of details. Being able to see the seats is not exactly what I would call "detailed". You can see seats on a $2.50 Hotwheel die cast.

I didn't say that seeing the seats means a train is detailed. That was just one example. Thats why I said that by making the train models smaller, they can afford to make less details on the train models cause there's no point in putting in so much effort on the details in small trains anyways cause you can hardly see them, hence cheaper. I didn't mean making them smaller and yet maintaining the same level of detail. That would definitely be more expensive like what you said.

Ya I agree if the train models for NEL had no detailed interiors and had only the exterior shell it would be cheaper. And to make it even cheaper size is also an issue too, cause being small means less materials used, in addition to the cost savings from the lesser attention to detail.

Kit
November 11th, 2004, 05:34 AM
Well, to tell you the truth, making money out of these models or even making die cast collection popular is not the priority for SBS Transit or SMRT for that matter. Like I said, I've talked to them and they have no intention to further any die cast production. The reason why these die cast models are still available although being produced in limited quantity is that they're not marketed like Hotwheels. You don't find them readily available in shops.

The sole purpose of these models is to commerate the new SBS Transit Coporate identity and launch of NEL. Actually part of these productions were actually given away as coporate gifts. Since these models represent the company, I wouldn't imagine that they would make cheaper, less detailed models. Like it or not, its really meant for the die hard collectors and business partners, not your everyday toy buyers.

And because its a main road the chances of getting a taxi is higher. And its 4 blocks and a road to the neighbourhood town centre. Whats lacking is a LRT. And it isnt crowded and congested like Ang Mo Kio Town.

And yet I am not disturbed by the noise as there is a much shorter block between me and the road, the noise level is lowered.

SBS Transit must be kind of broke. I think they bought like only 50 or so of them out of an entire fleet size of thousand over vehicles. They are even forced to use the old non air conditioned buses on some routes and no, there are no plans to upgrade these. And almost all buses still use non electronic boards to display service number and route at the front of the bus. No plans to upgrade as yet.

For SMRT Buses, all services are air conditioned. The older buses that are non air conditioned have either already been scrapped or have been installed with air con units. All services also have those electronic Flip Dot displays at the front of the bus, and the older buses without them are being upgraded with them.

Then again, SBS Transit having such a huge fleet size makes it hard for them to upgrade the buses quickly. But HK did it so quick (Wheelchair friendly buses, low floor buses, flip dot electronic displays are the norm). We should quicken up.

SBS Transit tested some LNG Buses, don't think they have any concrete plans. Singapore's bus companies are basically following a wait and see approach. See how this new technology fares overseas first, then decide on investing on huge infrastructure projects such as LNG refuelling stations and buses.

We are pretty slow in many areas. Areas which are out of sight of many people. We are pretty advanced economically and in almost everything else, but we lag behind in implementing those supposedly less important areas like wheelchair friendly buses (hk has a lot), tactile guidance systems for the streets of sg (tokyo, seoul, taipei, hk have a lot) and even our ezlink card membership scheme (taipei has one already even though their card launched later).

Ya. I knew you would mentioned that. Thats why I didnt mention it. Was seeing whether my instincts were accurate or not. haha.

Ya economically (business financial centre), education centre, medical centre, biomedical hub, convention hub, petrochemicals hub, aviation hub, shipping hub.

But less impt areas like what we have mentioned take a back seat. Thats where our resources are being diverted to. Like how the esplanade was pushed back and backed until everything was more stable economically. Guess another few years of stable growth and when our long term prospects economically are better like if we find out that our biomed sector is bigger and more stable, we will see your broadband dream come true.

Anyways whats a 1000kbps extra mean anyways, 56k as to 1500k is already a lot to me.

we? uh dun really think i account for the complacency... lol

omg can't stop typing lol lol lol

i wonder if sg will follow the rise and fall of venice. getting a bit out of point :p

what do you suggest be done to the streets of sg? i can't really think of much that needs improving other than more sheltered walkways / underground links between mrt stations and busy locations and more roads. tactile guides too probably. maybe that's why i dont see many handicapped people around.

CityCab taxis equipped with online digital maps

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/imagegallery/store/php5UHcxW.jpg

SINGAPORE : Ever spent more than the usual amount of money and time on the road because a cabbie did not know his way about town?

Well, that might soon be a thing of the past. CityCab has spent $23 million to equip its taxis with an online digital map.

With the new Mobile Data Terminal system, passengers will never be lost on the roads again.

The driver just needs to enter a destination into the system and a red line will appear within a few seconds directing him to the precise drop-off point.

The system is also able to automatically mark a passenger's pick-up and drop-off locations each time a call booking job is accepted, making it easier for the driver to plan his route.

The result is a shorter waiting time for the commuter and a fuss-free journey.

Mr Quek Pat Fatt, CityCab Taxi Driver, said: "With the new system, we can find our destination in five to seven minutes whereas the old system took us 15 to 20 minutes. The time-saving allows us to ferry another customer."

New cabbies are also more confident on the road with the handy map system.

Mr Bernard Fong, CityCab Taxi Driver, said: "I have been driving a cab for only three months and I am still unfamiliar with the roads. This new system gives me more confidence to ferry passengers."

All CityCab drivers will have to go through a four-hour training session to familiarise themselves with the new system.

Currently, 2,200 cabs have this digital guide and CityCab plans to install the system in all 5,200 of its cabs by March next year. - CNA

$1m relief for SMRT cabbies
2,400 drivers to get $380 worth of vouchers in 6 monthly instalments from next month

TRANSPORT group SMRT Corp is handing out close to $1 million worth of vouchers to help its cabbies cope with the rising price of diesel.

The fuel now costs over 30 per cent more than at the beginning of the year.

The company, which also runs a bus network on top of its subway system and fleet of taxis, said its 2,400 drivers will each get $380 worth of vouchers in six monthly instalments from next month.

Announcing the relief package yesterday, SMRT chief executive Saw Phaik Hwa said: 'I'm sure this will help alleviate the problems that the drivers have with their income... It'll make a difference to them.'

SMRT is also asking those who hire its taxis to share the benefit with its 1,200 relief drivers.

The vouchers can be used only at the company's three diesel kiosks in Ang Mo Kio, Woodlands and Geylang, where the fuel is sold at 69 cents a litre, instead of the regular retail price of 95 cents a litre.

They come on top of the company's existing relief packages, which include discounts of up to $3 a day on its $90 daily rent for a cab, introduced in January.

Cabby Koh Yong Hua, who has been driving a taxi for almost a decade, said the new scheme could not have come at a better time.

'Business has been quite slow,' explained the 47-year-old. 'I'm getting only about three customers on most weekdays.

'It's very competitive now with so many of us on the road,' he added.

Singapore's main taxi operator, Comfort- Delgro Corp, also will be giving out a special one-off bonus to help its more than 16,000 cabbies with rising diesel costs.

It intends to give out an estimated $5 million to them in four equal instalments next month and in February.

Each driver will receive between $240 and $360 in cash, based on his years of service. The payout is on top of regular bonuses.

SBS Transit buys 150 new Volvo double-decker buses for S$60m

By Derek Cher, Channel NewsAsia

SINGAPORE : A new fleet of double deckers could hit the roads by the second half of next year.

SBS Transit has ordered 150 new double-deck buses from Swedish truck maker Volvo at a cost of S$60 million.

The public bus operator says the new buses will be used to replace its existing older ones.

SBS has around 2,700 buses, of which 66 percent are made by Volvo.

This purchase is significant for Volvo, as it marks the first major order for its new double-deck chassis.

Volvo says the 150 chassis will be built in Sweden, while the bodies will be manufactured in Singapore by ComfortDelGro Engineering.

Delivery of the complete buses will begin in August next year.

And this will continue for 12 months before SBS receives all 150 double-deckers. - CNA

Comfort taxis to get speed-alert device

I REFER to the letter by Mr Jacky Tai (ST, Dec 24) regarding the installation of a speed-limit device in taxis. Installing a speed-limit device in taxis was a measure ComfortDelGro Corporation had explored for its fleet comprising Comfort, CityCab and Yellow-Top taxis but chose not to implement because of drawbacks like loss of power when travelling with heavy loads and when going upslope.

Comfort recently conducted a trial involving a silent speed-alert device which sets off a flashing light when the driver exceeds the speed limit. Feedback was positive and there are plans to install the device in more taxis, and eventually the whole Comfort fleet.

ComfortDelGro views safe driving by its drivers seriously and has in place several measures to instil in them the importance of driving safely. These measures include sending drivers for road-safety training, communicating road-safety tips to them through our in-house magazine and service campaigns, evaluating their driving competency through a commuter survey as well as putting new taxi drivers through a driving competency test.

New drivers are also required to go through a six-month probation in which they have to maintain clean driving and service-performance records. ComfortDelGro will not hesitate to weed out drivers that compromise the safety of other road users.

We wish to assure Mr Tai that ComfortDelGro will continue to reinforce communication, campaign and training efforts to educate our drivers on road safety.

SBS Transit Launches First FAST FORWARD 97e

A new bus service aimed at getting commuters to their destinations faster was launched today. Called Fast Forward 97e, the new offering by SBS Transit will call only at stops where there are high passenger boarding and alighting activities.

Fast Forward 97e plys the same route as its existing parent Service 97 but stops only at 17 out of the 34 bus stops that the parent service stops at during peak periods. With the additional traffic management measures put in place together with the Land Transport Authority (LTA), commuters travelling on Fast Forward 97e can save up to 20% in travel time. For example, if a commuter takes the parent Service 97, it will take up to 66 mins to travel between Jurong East Interchange and Fullerton Road. With Fast Forward 97e, it only takes about 53 mins.

To further improve on travel time, new “Give Way to Buses Exiting” signs will be put up at bus stops along the Fast Forward 97e route to encourage other road users to make it easier for buses to exit from bus bays. These bus stops are located at:-

a) outside NOL Building, Alexandra Road;
b) opposite NOL Building, Alexandra Road;
c) opposite Normanton Park, AYE;
d) outside ITE Dover, AYE;
e) outside Jurong Regional Library, Jurong Town Hall Road;
f) outside HarbourFront Centre, Telok Blangah Road and
g) opposite HarbourFront Centre, Telok Blangah Road.

To make it even easier for other road users to identify a bus that is pulling out of a bus bay, three additional LED signal lights have been installed on the off-side and back of the new Fast Forward 97e and existing Service 97 buses.

Bus lanes have also been drawn along the southbound of Alexandra Road between Depot Road and Telok Blangah Road to facilitate a smoother travelling flow for our buses.

During the morning peak hours between 7.30am and 8.30am, Fast Forward 97e will depart from Jurong East Interchange and call at limited bus stops along Jurong Town Hall Road, AYE, Alexandra Road, Telok Blangah Road, Keppel Road, Anson Road, Robinson Road and Fullerton Road. In the evening peak hours between 6.00pm and 7.00pm, it will pick up passengers from Collyer Quay and call at limited bus stops along Raffles Quay, Shenton Way, Keppel Road, Telok Blangah Road, Alexandra Road, AYE, Jurong Town Road and Jurong East Central towards Jurong East Interchange (see attached route information).

Details of the stops and estimated arrival times can be found at all the bus stops called by the service. Commuters can also log on to the Fast Forward dedicated website at www.ffw.com.sg for more information. Promotional brochures are also placed at major office buildings in the vicinity of these bus stops.

Mr Ong Kian Min, Chairman of Government Parliamentary Committee for Transport joined commuters for a trip this morning. “I applaud SBS Transit for their efforts in offering this new brand of Fast Forward services to cater to changing commuters’ needs. With the introduction of more of such Fast Forward services, commuters will be able to get to their destinations faster and enjoy greater time savings,” said Mr Ong.

SBS Transit Service Ambassadors wearing blue vests were on-board all trips and at bus stops to promote Fast Forward 97e to the commuters.

To encourage more passengers to try out this new Fast Forward service, SBS Transit will charge a promotional normal adult fare for the month of January 2005. After January 2005, commuters will pay fares of $1.53 to $2.28 if they pay by ez-link card or $1.60 to $2.35 if they pay by cash. This fare is the same fare as the existing Express services. Similarly, transfer rebates will be given but concessionary travel is not applicable.

Bus Service Diversions in Chinatown on Saturday, 15 January 2005

TEMPORARY BUS SERVICE DIVERSIONS DUE TO LUNAR NEW YEAR LIGHT-UP CELEBRATION IN CHINATOWN AND NORTH EAST LINE TRAIN SERVICE

On Saturday, 15 January 2005, from 3.00pm to 11.00pm, New Bridge Road and Eu Tong Sen Street (between the junction with Upper Cross Street and the junction with Kreta Ayer Road) will be closed to vehicular traffic.

As a result of this road closure, 13 SBS Transit bus services will have to be temporarily diverted. The bus services affected are : 2, 12, 33, 54, 63, 80, 124, 143, 145, 147, 166, 197 and C2. Some bus stops along New Bridge Road and Eu Tong Sen Street will be skipped in the process. The bus services will revert to their original routing when the road closure is lifted.

Please see attached map for details of the diverted routes.

Commuters going to Chinatown may wish to travel on the North East Line (NEL) and alight at Chinatown Station during this period. As the Chinatown Station is expected to be very busy during this time, commuters are urged to take note of the following recommendations so as to ensure a more comfortable travelling experience.

Commuters are advised to top-up their ez-link cards before making the journey to Chinatown. Those buying the ez-link standard tickets are encouraged to buy the standard tickets for their return journey as well.
Commuters may want to consider alighting at alternative NEL stations such as Clarke Quay and Outram Stations when going to Chinatown. Clarke Quay Station is less than 300m away while Outram Station is about 600m away from the Chinatown Station.

New bus services launched for Chinatown
By Wong Siew Ying, Channel NewsAsia

SINGAPORE: Making that trip to Chinatown this Lunar New Year will be a lot more convenient, especially for the senior citizens, with the launch of three new bus services on Friday.

The new bus services will ply through Ang Mo Kio, Bedok and Clementi before hitting the expressway to Chinatown.

The bus services come in auspicious numbers - CT 8, 18, 28 - and the buses have bright signs and even dialect-speaking captains.

Fares for senior citizens are priced at one dollar.

To celebrate the launch, SBS Transit is offering a "one-for-one bonus" till end of the month where commuters get a free return trip.

For senior citizens like 68-year-old Madam Yap, the new bus services will make travel easy for her.

She makes about three trips to Chinatown from her Clementi home every week via a feeder bus service and the MRT.

But thanks to the new direct bus services, her journey to Chinatown will be smoother now.

"No need to make any transfers, it takes us there directly, it's more convenient," she said.

Joint promotions with merchants will also allow commuters to redeem discounts or gifts when they shop at Chinatown.

Wong Chi Keong, chairman of Chinatown Business Association, said: "Our objective is to promote the business interest of Chinatown. We've been in discussion with SBS Transit for quite some time about how to make it more convenient for the customers to come to Chinatown, like where they should alight and how should the bus routes be."

Operating hours for the new bus services are from 10am to 5pm on weekdays, and 10am to 10pm on weekends and public holidays. - CNA
