View Full Version : Kisumu - Busia Road
Arzedu March 1st, 2012, 07:13 AM The sorry condition of a key arterial road connecting Kenya with Uganda, Rwanda and Sudan: I was there yesterday, and I was horrified because most of the time we were driving off the "road"!
Am told a certain company was given the contract to recarpet the road not too long ago: the owners by now should have been in jail and singing like a canary, telling us who they 'ate' our money with! Poor, poor, poor workmanship at display, no wonder we are still a third world country.:ohno:

Does he have to wait till he is president to banish them? And again i hate this one man mentality to solve our issues; we should have institutions with real teeth to reign in on impunity irrespective of who is heading them.

@ Dhuks .... regional imbalance is very alive in Kenya .... In all honesty ... I fail to understand how Mombasa to Busia Road is not well maintained yet it leads to our oil producing neighbors. I never even want to talk about it not being a dual carriage way by now ....... Wait til Tinga takes over ... He is the peoples prezzo. I cant wait ...... 1 more year .... The time will come ....

Oil producing neighbours? How many barrels have they produced? It takes real MONEY to dual a road 800+km long so if the next president is going to mull over dualling that whole stretch he wont get my blessings;what of impoverishing me with roads that may not make economic sense. That road should be dualled i agree but only on approach to main towns, then expanded as capacity demands. Regional imbalance is there, was there and will be there; what matters is how entrenched it is and for what measure.
I dont go gaga about individuals coz even if we elect him you will be disappointed when he fails to attain what you thought is rather obvious.
JARIBU March 1st, 2012, 02:13 PM I drove on that road from Kisumu to Maseno last month and encountered some really bad stretches. And they may be the same ones in the pictures if these were taken between Kisumu and Maseno. The contractor you have in mind is Hayer Bishan Singh who is notorious for shoddy work and yet continues to recieve government contracts. And those longing for Agwambo to end this impunity may have to wait. It's not as if he is not aware of this Hayer guy and his shoddiness. Hayer could be one of his financial backers.

That road is right infront of the Chulaimbo Sub-District Hospital and its a nightmare!! Though as of today (when I passed on my way to Kisumu) there were those Cataerpillars (I dont know what they are called. Graders? Ones with the blade underneath? And that roller/compactor one) already on site clearing the sides and laying out something that could be a diversion. So I'm hoping its a repair operation. Hoping!
As for Hayer Bishan and Agwambo, I also highly suspect there is an unholy alliance there, its not like he wouldnt know...he was the roads minister many years back and I can say without fear of contradiction that this particular road has always been built, repaired and "maintained" by Hayer...the lousiest contractors ever...their work never last!
So can Agwambo do something even if he was president? I highly doubt that.
JARIBU March 3rd, 2012, 06:24 AM The part I had in mind seemed a little further away from Chulaimbo, but I could be wrong. There are two people I detest most in Kenya: Daniel Arap Moi and Hayer Bishan Singh. Hayer is also responsible for the terrible condition of the Mamboleo-Chemelil-Muhoroni road. He is also the one who built the bus park in Kisumu that started falling apart a month after it was finished. I am glad to see that something is being done about that Chulaimbo stretch. Do you know who redid the section near the airport? I went by there last year when it was under construction and last month. The finished product was not impressive and a year from now that area will be a mess.

Arzedu March 3rd, 2012, 11:21 AM Actually most of the pictures were taken between Ugunja and Maseno, but nearer Ugunja. Between Maseno and Kisumu the road is more or less in fair condition.
There is no doubt in my mind that there was criminal fraud visited on us poor taxpayers by this Hayer Singh fella: he belongs in jail, in addition to restitution for the false pretenses under which we paid him (I would imagine massively) for this bogus rumour of a road.
As for Moi, the less said about him the better. And ILL WILL, yes, there are (and most likely always will be) regional imbalances: I was in Mombasa yesterday and on my way back to Nairobi had the misfortune of driving through what can charitably be described as a wretched road between Mombasa CBD and Miritini: more so, that eye-popping section between Changamwe and Miritini, where there is no more tarmac. Unbelievable to note that it is the main carriageway that serves as the 'gateway' to EA! Even driving between Mariakani and Mtito is now a nightmare, with the road getting more and more rutted by the hour.
Well, for my home region NEP, I would only offer that we no longer are angry or frustrated, despite having 30% of Kenya's landmass and a heart-rending 0.06% of the total paved roads in the country (7kms out of the 12,000kms)! Would you still describe that as 'regional imbalance'?
kaguangi1 March 5th, 2012, 01:48 AM cowboy contractor bwana let us have chinese ,chinese and more chinese contractors
JARIBU March 21st, 2012, 10:11 PM Looks like this work has been given to Hayer Bishan Singh again: What a disaster.

Why this contractor? Travelling on the Kisumu-Busia road at the weekend, Jim Webo was pleased to note that repairs on the dilapidated road have begun in earnest, just a few kilometres from the Kisian junction towards Maseno. However, he is disappointed that the work is being done by Hayer, the same contractor who recarpeted the road just a few years ago, and who should have been required to explain why the road became so badly tattered in such a short time. “Shall we see better maintenance this time?” Jim asks..

Terrible! Complete waste of taxpayers money! Can we start an online petition to the necessary authorities?

JARIBU March 24th, 2013, 05:18 AM If this is around Maseno, then what a difference a year makes.
