The crown is lit in different colors for different occasions.

From left to right: Normal everyday lighting, Christmas, Lakers are in the playoffs :). I think it is also lit blue and white when the Dodgers are in the playoffs.

 I was also looking for this picture, I had used it before and couldn't find it. Thanks TG!

I saw an episode of "Visiting" with Huel Howser filmed back in the late nineties, they allowed him to film from the helipad AND to board the gantry they use to clean the building. Just watching that made me uneasy, as I'm scarred of heights in an open environment like that. Eek!

Awesome thread!

I remember reading about the proposed "Library Tower" in the LA Times 25 years ago. So much was happening in DTLA back then...and this was the capper!

Such a beautiful slender structure. I had the chance to go to the 54th floor for work, and the view is amazing.

Is this related to the UOB Plaza tower in Singapore? They look so similar!

That's what I thought when I went to Singapore for the first time. Our building predates the UOB by a few years. There's no relationship in terms of architects but the Wiki page of the UOB Plaza says it was inspired by the US Bank Tower (Library Tower) in Los Angeles. Our tower is almost 100 feet taller.

This is without a doubt the most influential building in the Los Angeles skyline since City Hall was built in 1928. Our skyline wasn't even worth looking at until this was built. It gave our skyline a center, a focal point, an apex. Now the Los Angeles skyline shows up in many movies, TV shows, commercials, music videos and advertisements. All because of this building.

^^ Hm, I'd agree with that. But filming has never stopped in DT, maybe now that panoramic view of DT is more appealing to film makers. But at street level, they've always filmed.

I never said that filming stopped, filming has always been in DTLA especially of the industrial district and historic buildings. But showing the entire skyline pre-Library Tower was very rare. Now, our skyline shows up, even for no other reason. Like this Coldplay music video, which, aside from the first 10 seconds, was filmed in suburban London:

A bit of trivia here.

Did know that the overal height of this building and the overall legnth of the Queen Marry in Long Beach are exactly the same number of feet: 1018.

So, if you were to stand the QM on end you can imagine how tall it woud be by looking at this building. :)

West Coast’s Tallest Tower at Risk of Loan Default, Fitch Says
By Eliot Brown
Bloomberg News

The U.S. Bank Tower in Los Angeles is running into trouble with its debt.

The $260 million mortgage on the 73-story building, the tallest on the U.S. West Coast, is in danger of an imminent default, according to a notice from Fitch Ratings, which said the loan was transferred to a debt workout firm known as a special servicer. Special servicers act on behalf of debt bond investors to modify mortgages or in some cases to foreclose on properties . . . .

The U.S. Bank Tower, owned by MPG Office Trust, has struggled in recent years with high vacancy, a woe common for buildings in the sluggish downtown Los Angeles office market. As of earlier this fall, the tower had an occupancy rate of 58%, according to loan research firm Trepp, well below the approximately 90% occupancy it had back in 2003, when the mortgage was first issued . . . .

The U.S. Bank Tower had relatively less debt on it than other properties, although its high vacancy has meant MPG has barely had enough money from rent to make debt payments, according to Trepp. Barring an extension, the loan would need to be paid off this summer, according to Trepp.

Earlier this year, MPG Office Trust tapped real estate advisor Eastdil Secured and investment bankers at Bank of America Corp. to advise on potential strategic alternatives, including a possible sale, according to real estate executives who considered bids on the company. The company hasn’t given an update on the potential sale.

No empty spaces? I read that it was 40 percent empty and had been for years. Worse, I would assume that the lenders saw more or less no hope that this would change for the foreseeable future, which is the most common reason for actually taking action on risky or non-performing debt.

did i say no empty spaces? im saying that the management of the company as well as the marketing is atrocious. they have no idea what they are doing. i called once to inquire about a 6000 square foot office for a client and it took them 4 days to get back to me

While I would like to see Wilshire Grand eclipse US Bank in height, I must say that, IMO, US Bank is a classic, a 'worthy tallest.'

California’s Tallest Building to Be Acquired for $367.5 Million (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-03-11/california-s-tallest-building-to-be-acquired-for-367-5-million.html)

The U.S. Bank Tower in Los Angeles, California’s tallest building, will be bought by Overseas Union Enterprise Ltd. (OUE) for $367.5 million as the real estate company seeks to expand beyond its base in Singapore.

The office property, owned by a unit of MPG Office Trust Inc., was completed in 1989 and has a height of 1,018 feet (310 meters), OUE said today in a statement. The tower has about 1.4 million square feet (130,000 square meters) of space on 72 floors and six levels of underground parking, OUE said.

“U.S. Bank Tower is a well-positioned building that we expect to appeal to a broad base of both local and international office tenants operating in California,” OUE Executive Chairman Stephen Riady said in the statement.

Downtown Los Angeles has undergone a decade-long revival with developments such as the Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall on Grand Avenue, which has lured locals and tourists into the area since opening 10 years ago. Even so, city-center office vacancies rose to 17.8 percent in the third quarter from 15.6 percent a year earlier, according to Jones Lang LaSalle Inc. (JLL)

The U.S. Bank Tower, which was blown up in the 1996 movie “Independence Day,” is 56 percent occupied. It will be succeeded as the tallest in California by a $1 billion office and hotel complex being developed by Korean Air Lines Co. in Los Angeles that’s due to open in 2017.

OUE will acquire the U.S. Bank Tower through Beringia Central LLC, a wholly owned unit. The company is also buying Maguire Gardens and a car-park facility from Library Square Associates LLC, a unit of MPG. (MPG)
