I see two options.

Continue informing these women about the risks, before they leave the country (won't help much, because the see "sisters" coming back with shopping bags for the entire family).

Create a North Korea/Derg type of a country where nobody are allowed to leave, because stopping these "maid agency's" won't stop people from leaving.

I'd do this. If you under 18, you shouldn't be allowed to leave to work elsewhere.

If you are an adult, you should be informed in your local language, SIGN that you've read and understood these rules and the rest is up to you.

A government can't and shouldn't babysit adults, even tho' seeing videos like this is heartbreaking.

Your first comment reeks of sarcasm. This is not funny.

You're missing the underlying point here of how this ties into the economics in Ethiopia which the government is DIRECTLY responsible for. Currently, there's almost no private sector in Ethiopia (the government owns the land and most companies operating in the country). Because there's no private sector, this leads to almost 70% youth unemployment so they leave the country to find work anywhere. This video is not a rare situation but it is a major trend happening in the middle east for the many years. If young Ethiopian women are willing to go to these countries then that speaks volumes of the current employment/lifestyle problems in Ethiopia itself which the Ethiopian government is responsible for.

I'm not joking, I'm dead serious. I've seen interviews with girls that followed the foot steps of other relatives, after they've seen them come back with "tons of money". Of course they would want to do the same, even those that know about the risk.

Ethiopia has missed more than 30 years of development during Derg, it will take some time until we reach a point where the higher salaries in the Gulfs won't be as attractive.

There are more maids from much more developed countries in South-East Asia, so no privatisaiton in the world would stop this issue in Ethiopia in a long time.

The reality is that these girls make more money in rich gulf states than a professional would in Ethiopia or most African countries. So what do we do until then? Stop these ladies by force or continue to inform them about the risk as much as possible?

Agree. I highly doubt it would stop many women from going aboard to work as maids even if they were informed about the possible risks attached. Its a risk many people are willing to take.

That video was very hard to watch, this took place in broad daylight aswell:ohno:

No, I partly blame the embassys more than the government back home. They are the voice of the people, so they should condemn these attacks publicly in those violent countries. They should also establish help centers for these abused women and so on, but they can't go around and act like they're the police.

At the end of the day, it's the abusers and the passive by-passers that are responsible for what's happening in this video. The Lebanese government, that aren't doing enough to stop the violence, are also to blame.

I think there is something that can be done. Ethiopia is still largely uneducated, I have no doubt most of them do not appropriately know what the are getting into. Just don't think about the few hundred Ethiopians that might be better informed (from cities). If you visit Bole, you would be amazed at the number of people leaving the country. Most of the from the far corner of the country and they cannot even fill a form in AMHARIC (asking other travelers to fill the immigration form).
If I have a say, I will increase the regulation on agencies. For example, give them a course how to avoid trouble. They should be able to say a word or two in English (or Arabic). Even a well educated person can be overwhelmed by a sudden change that comes from leaving your country.
Because we already know the risk in the mentioned country, we should arrange for undesirable eventuality. For example, in the Embassy set up a department to handle such type of issues.

.
.
Ethiopia is not the only poor African country. Hence, we should ask why we are in this predicament.
The liberal view that people over 18 are on their own is neither Ethiopian nor desirable. As an Ethiopian, we ought to look after each other. Especially those who have the opportunity to get better information should assist fellow Ethiopians. I am not saying let's ban people from leaving the country. There is mid point between banning and being strict. My feeling is that the agencies are unregulated and can ship off as many ill-informed people as they like without proper preparation.

Very disturbing video..I'm going to prey for this poor woman and sisters in similar situations...But wasn't she at the Ethiopian embassy? If so why didn't anyone step out to intervene...Cosndiering that scene someone at the embassy had to notice her...This nothing short of an assault and kidnapping...Considering the culprits were nohting but men and they way they violently abducted her I would suspect a rape took place too..Somebody should really email this video to the proper auhtorities in Lebanon and Ethiopia...I am really worried about the well being of that sister and fear her life is in danger.

LBCI identifies the man who abused the Ethiopian domestic worker
The scenes of the Ethiopian domestic worker being beaten outside the Ethiopian consulate were considered as a crime by all those who saw them. The Lebanese state mobilized its efforts, especially the cabinet and the Lebanese public opinion that strongly denounced what happened, calling for harsh sanctions against the perpetrator of such acts in the future.

Ali Mahfouz is the man seen in the video footage, abusing the Ethiopian worker; LBCI identified him through his plate number. Ali tried to justify his act by denying that he beat her; he stressed that the worker tried to commit suicide more than once and that he tried dealing with her humanely, but she refused to go to the airport for deportation.

Labor Minister Salim Jreissati told LBCI that the Ministry of Labor decided to take the necessary measures to punish the perpetrator who turned out to be an employee in the domestic workers’ office. Jreissati said that the ministry summoned the domestic workers’ office for an urgent meeting on Monday, adding that a formal complaint will be registered.

As for Chakib Kortbawi, he told LBCI that this act cannot be justified, adding that justice will be served and that the public prosecution launched an investigation in this case.

The Ethiopian Consulate’s employees told LBCI that they remember the incident, adding that it is not one of its kind. They called on the Lebanese authorities to interfere and protect Ethiopian nationals.

Caritas identified the Ethiopian worker, stressing that they were following up on her case since she was admitted in Deir el-Salib hospital two weeks ago.

This Ethiopian girl may be lucky that pictures of her were taken while being abused, but many other domestic workers are being beaten and abused behind closed doors.

It's a relief to hear that poor girl is is okay and hopefully in a safe place...I do agree with the last statement in the article though and feel more needs to be done to check on the well being of migrant workers whom likely experience similar if not worse abuses behind closed doors..The pig caught seems very arrogant trying to blame the victim ...But I want to know why is the media interveiwing him before the police.

You must be an atheist huh? I'm not that religous myself and don't feel like discussing God's power/will cause as Christians are known to say God sometimes works in mysterous ways..Prayer certainly could only help not hurt the situation and it was by the grace of God that sister came out of her plight free and alive from the bondadge of her barbaric captors.

1st of all RIP to that precious young woman...This is devastaing news for me considering I was under the impression that she was safe and sound after being freed from the animals whom abused her on that video....It's going to be interesting to see in what way the Lebanese authorities punish her abusers if at all though i'm not optimistic considering I read this type type of barbary against Ethiopian slave/maids happens all the time with no consequences...I'm not buying her commiting suicide either...Judging from that video she was scared for her life and wanted live...I think she was murdered to cover up and protect the Lebanese savage arabs whom most likely raped and tortured her....Considering how how these crimes against Ethiopian maids is all to common in the Mid East but Lebanon in particular I don't know why the Ethiopian government still sends there girls there..I blame this death not only on the beastly cowards whom brutalized that sister but the Lebanese and Ethiopian authorities for being so complacent despite an long and thorough history of such atrocities that should have forewarned them to take action before it came to this...

Is there any other proof to show how much hate Woyane has for Ethiopians. The woyane embassies in the Arab countries work against the interest of Ethiopians. Actually most of the agents who make money out of the maid trafficking are Woyane themselves. Also they are heavily involved in the baby trafficking business. The Ethiopian embassy's action (or lack thereof) is an accurate depiction of the TPLF's true nature. After all they work for Meles and whatever Meles says goes. Meles only cares about himself and doesn't give a shit about anyone else. Shortly before his mother died in the early 2000s she disowned her son for the crimes he had committed against humanity. He's still a bitter self centered child 'til this day.

Ethiopia sues Lebanese assaulterEthiopia has sued Ali Mahfouz, a man who was caught on camera beating and dragging an Ethiopian domestic worker, Alem Dechassa, 33, after her death was reported. The consulate in Lebanon demanded an autopsy report as Alem was said to have committed suicide while she was admitted at Psychiatrique de la Croix Hospital.

Asaminew Debelie Bonssa, Ethiopia’s consulate general in Lebanon, told The Reporter on Thursday via telephone that he and other Ethiopians visited Alem last Saturday and Monday and said that she was in good health condition.

“However, I was told that she hanged herself using her bed sheets on Wednesday as I was heading to the hospital for more detail information about her abuse with the police officer who was working on her case,” he said.

In a video released by LBCI last week, Alem was seen moaning while she was being dragged and forced to get into a car by her employer Ali Mahfouz with the support of another man.

“Alem was taken to our office by her employer, Ali, to be reported as she needed to get back to Ethiopia and we told him that is her right. He also told us that she had tried to commit suicide and we told him that it is his obligation to take her to a hospital. Immediately after they left our office, we saw him dragging, beating and forcing her to get into the car,” he said.

Assaminew went on explaining that right after he reached the spot where Alem was being abused, he intervened, stopped Ali and called the police, all of which was not aired on the news.

Alem Dechassa is a divorcee and a mother. She went to Lebanon two months ago illegally. However, she had not informed the officials of her entry. “At the hospital we were asking her questions and she had no information that Ethiopia had banned domestic workers from going to Lebanon,” Assaminew said.

In Lebanon it is estimated that there are around 60 to 70 thousand Ethiopian domestic workers.http://www.thereporterethiopia.com/News/ethiopia-sues-lebanese-assaulter.html

Concern over Lebanon maid deaths

The UN special rapporteur on slavery has urged the Lebanese government to carry out a full investigation into the death of an Ethiopian domestic worker.

Alem Dechasa, 33, killed herself on 14 March, a few days after she was filmed being beaten by men and dragged into a car in the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

Gulnara Shahinian said the "cruel" images reminded her of the many migrant workers she met in Lebanon last year.

She urged the country to uncover the truth about such rights violations.

Last month, eight civil society groups called on the Lebanese authorities to reform restrictive visa regulations and adopt a labour law on domestic work to address high levels of abuse and deaths among migrant workers.
'End impunity'

On 8 March, the Lebanese television network LBCI released a video filmed on 24 February by an anonymous bystander in which a man physically abuses Ms Alem outside the Ethiopian consulate in Beirut.

As she tries to resist, he and another man drag her into a car.

LBCI later identified the man beating her as the brother of the head of the recruiting agency that brought her to Lebanon.

He alleged that his brother's agency had been trying to return her to Ethiopia because she had mental health problems.

Police later found Ms Alem and took her to a detention centre.

Following a request by the Caritas Lebanon Migrant Center, they transferred her to the Deir al-Saleeb psychiatric hospital two days later, but did not arrest those alleged to have carried out the beatings.

Ms Dechasa killed herself at the hospital on the morning of 14 March.

After the beating video was circulated, the labour and justice ministries began investigations, but their outcomes have not been made public.

On Tuesday, Ms Shahinian issued a statement strongly urging the Lebanese authorities to investigate the circumstances leading to Ms Alem's death and make public their findings.

"There are a number of reports circulating about the human rights violations Alem Dechasa experienced as a migrant domestic worker in Lebanon and the facts surrounding her death," she said.

"States are under an obligation to ensure the realisation of the right to truth about violations in order to end impunity and promote and protect human rights and provide redress to victims and their families."
