That's the idea :) let's make a thread for every building, you guys go ahead and help if you wish, I'd appreciate it.

Is the 777 by Pelli?

I always felt this building was incomplete, something's missing on top. :D

^^ Yes 777 is by Pelli...it's from a period in his career of which I am a particular fan...when he was creating his own contemporary version of art deco. 777 is a decent tower but my two favorite towers of his from this period are Wells Fargo (formerly Norwest) in Minneapolis and 181 West Madison (formerly Paine Webber) in Chicago.

I never understood what he was aiming for, but you cleared it up for me. I remember when it was being built and the cladding/exterior was going up I really thought that it wasn't finished on top.

^^ Yeah, the setbacks on 777 aren't as convincing or elegant as those on some of his other creations. Perhaps a slight artistic block (or laziness?) this time around. But still, it's nicer than the average box...

Regarding the truncated top... in the case of 181 West Madison, it was actually supposed to be a template for the 2000 ft Miglin Beitler Skyneedle, which did rise all the way to a pointed climax (and was rather reminiscent of New York's unbuilt Larkin Tower from the 1920s). In the pic below, 181 West Madison can been seen just to the left the Skyneedle. In the case of 777, if given greater height, one could imagine it tapering to a more satisfying climax as well.

It would have to have a sort of flat top for the helipad, that are mandatory in LA, but, come on! I do love the massiveness of this building, it has presence, or actually demands it.

An article from 1990 soon after this building's opening.
