Hmm, can you show more of the city, please? - So far, the pics show virtually nothing.

It's just an intro about the city, its traditions... sorry for the pause, I'm about to restart work and have been busy.

Raínha Santa Isabel. Isabel was the wife of King Dinis in the late 13th and early 14th century. This king was the creator of the university. Isabel had a huge heart and was very kind to the poor, and one day she was delivering bread when the king saw her and asked where she was going. She had the breads hidden in her dress and she, afraid of his answer, answered "they're roses". He asked "roses in January?". She opened the dress and the breads had miraculously turned into roses. It's the Miracle of the Roses and there's the procession that atracts many devoted to her.

Associação Académica de Coimbra, students' association. It's more than 100 years old, has the biggest offer of sports in the country, from football to rugby, from judo to gymnastics and taekwondo, plus cultural groups, theatre, music (including Coimbra fado and popular music groups called tunas), ecology, chess, radio (one of the few radio schools), plus the studying rooms, gardens, cafeteria... plus, AAC plays a major role in the universitary politics and has also a role in portuguese history due to the participation in the students' protest against the regime in 1969. Here is the building and its garden. I like it during the day

Santa Clara a Velha Monastery, 13th century monastery for the Clarisse nuns, important for the local culture... and pastry... the monastery lies in the bank of the river, which flooded it for some 4 centuries (I still remember it flooded). In the early 90s, pumping of the water started and in the last decade works recovered the area, cleaned it and it's a beautiful place to visit it.

Aristides de Sousa Mendes was a consul in Bordeaux, France, who in the time of the nazi persecution to the Jews, signed tens of thousands of visas to let Jews enter Portugal and escape death. Portugal was neutral, but helped both sides in the 2nd war, and dictator Salazar didn't like his actions, and fired Aristides. He lived in misery ever after, but still revered by the Jewish.

May has the academic festivity Queima das Fitas (party during a whole week), which starts with the Serenata in the Old Cathedral, and the parade with the cars and the students who say hello or goodbye to their academic life. June has the Medieval Fair also in the square of the Old Cathedral, plus some festivities for the Saints (especially St. John, June 24th). In July, if you are religious, the Raínha Santa Festivities are a must see, especially the night Procession.
