tanzirian June 19th, 2008, 06:16 AM Roseview is looking good! Quick Tmac, time for you to take another trip to Sylhet and give us some first-hand pics!
...that archway is nice too, haven't seen it before. Although Dhaka has more stuff it may well be in a decade or so, that Sylhet is a nicer place to live. Hopefully that new economic zone is a success. Buriganga waterfront needs to take a lesson from the riverfront in Sylhet.

I always wondered why there are no walkways in the Dhaka riverfronts; I am guessing building those would stop the encroaching into the river (at least temporarily)

Sorry, don't know if it personally, but you can browse the thread and see if it was posted anywhere. You could also check out Tmac's trip report from last year...he had some Sylhet photos at the end of it.

Looks like they have built these nice arches on either side of Kean Bridge. Dhaka should really take a lesson from Sylhet on what to do with a riverfront.

beer51 August 18th, 2008, 02:01 PM Thanks Tanzirin but no luck. I believe this shopping mall (blue water) is supposed to rival Al Hamra but very few people seem to talk/know about it.
sas August 18th, 2008, 05:59 PM This is so funny - these people continue ripping names off - Blue Water in London as many of you may know is one of the largest malls in Europe.

If we only had some forumers living in Sylhet, then we could easily get all the updates and pics from time to time which would also keep this thread much more active.Theres so much happening in Sylhet that we dont get to knwo about:ohno:

nayeem007 December 14th, 2008, 07:27 AM Thanks for sharing the pics, it's really hard to get photos of Sylhet on the web. So far the construction in Sylhet has been fuelled by remittance from expatriate Sylhets, I think it's high time that the government starts focuing on this city along with Chittagong as the next 2 economic hub of Bangladesh.
Focused industries can be developed for the 2 cities, IT parks, industrial zones to proper infrastructure. Only then we will see sustained development outside Dhaka.
beer51 December 15th, 2008, 02:01 PM Hi MC
Thanks for posting the blue water shopping city pictures...........you've made my day. Any more pictures of inside the shopping centre together with night photos will be much appreciate it. Once again thanks and lets keep this sylhet forum alive and kicking.

So, is this place a hotel or an apartment complex, or a combination of both?
TIslam December 16th, 2008, 05:10 AM ^^
When is it happening, this Grand Sylhet?
beer51 December 16th, 2008, 02:00 PM This is a hotel apartment meaning you have the luxury of the hotel with all it's services with a touch of home environment.
In a conventional hotel you don't have a kitchen where as these will have that facilities hence you can cook your own food.
With projects like this sylhet will definitely be one to watch. I congratulate the guys who have invested their money in this project.
I don't know the completion or the start date but expect delays of at least 1-2yrs.
tanzirian December 16th, 2008, 02:36 PM Thanks mc and beer. If any of you Sylheti probashis make it home some time, be sure to take some photos for us. Rose View exterior looks great, I would say that it is the most attractive highrise (or midrise) in Sylhet.
beer51 December 17th, 2008, 02:07 PM Hi Tanz
It is highly unlikely that i will going to the homeland but i am sure MC could sort some photos.
meghnarmajhi December 17th, 2008, 03:40 PM I would like to see some pictures of Sylhet and other places of Bangladesh that we can use as SSC banner. Sylhet and Chittagong to start with. Pictures don't have to be city scenes. Natural beauty, tourist attraction type. I can's find one nice pictures of elephants from Chittagong
tanzirian December 18th, 2008, 12:05 AM I've found higher-res versions of some of the pics MC has been posting and will upload them after I'm through with the Khulna pics in the "Cities and Towns" threads.

Hey Beer51, All the shops on the ground floor were sold long before Blue Water even opened.. But there are two shops for sale which are a 1000 square feet each. One being on the 1st floor and one on the 2nd.
The price is approx 18 000 taka per square feet.
A few smaller shops on 3rd floor are available..
3rd and 4th floors are cheaper
Hope i helped, or you can phone their office on 0821 714090
Also i noticed that you were asking for pics of the inside of the shopping centre? I can get some up soon :)

Sylhet Rail Station has its own distinctive features, most notably the skylights. If you missed them check out Golden Boy's pictures on page 2 / post 35 of this thread, like the one below. Would love high res versions of his shots...pics of Sylhet station are surprisingly difficult to find, considering (from casual observation) that Sylhetis make up a high percentage of Bangladeshi photographers on the net. Not sure when it was built...so don't know if it is a recent structure, or older like Kamalapur...but it does look pretty new.

bromora April 7th, 2009, 05:51 PM WOW!!!! nice picts brother.
One question is Osmani Nogor new name for TajPur??
Osmani Nogor is the "thana" for the area around Tajpur/Goalabazar. Before, the thana was in Balaganj but a new thana (police station) was established and named Osmani Nogor (after General Osmani) a few years ago.

Thanks for updating me. I was aware that Taj Pur was becoming a thana but wasn't sure when the change took place or what the new name was.
IMO Balagonj has lost out. Also Sylhet has become a city.

As with anything in BD, nothing is straightforward :ohno:.
Tajpur was set to be the thana and indeed their HQ was a couple of hundred metres west of the bazaar for a few months/a year. But the folks from Goalabazar insisted that it be located at Goalabazar so there was a bit of a tiff between the two. In the end, it was decided to be called "Osmani Nogor" and that took place a few years ago.
The area around Tajpur is set to become a "puroshoba" in the near future (I think it means metropolitan area).
beer51 April 9th, 2009, 01:51 PM Typical village politics..........hate it. I think there are too many things named after Col Osmani (nothing against the guy).
DonRuhel April 10th, 2009, 01:33 PM Typical village politics..........hate it. I think there are too many things named after Col Osmani (nothing against the guy).
I agree wholeheartedly. Too much narrow minmded village politics has held us back for so long. They should have named it either Tajpur or Goalabazar. If you tell somebody about Osmaninogor, first thing they say is where is it? Can't blame them, there is no geographical link to the name.
:ohno::ohno:
Dhakaiya April 12th, 2009, 11:56 AM Praise God it wasn't named 'Bangabandhu' like many other things we have

tanzirian June 25th, 2009, 04:48 PM Wonder if post 354 is just poor exposure or a photoshop? If the latter, it represents a trend where one of our photographers takes a perfectly nice pic and then tries to "improve" it with unnatural colors...most times this ends up diminishing the original photo IMO.

nayeem007 June 26th, 2009, 08:41 PM What surprises me about Sylhet city is, inspite of all the developments and investment it still remains a fairly small city. It should have atleast taken over Khulna, which has been going downhill since the demise of Jute industry and Mongla port..

Probably because the development is more due to expat money than to real industrial progress. Hopefully that will change...
beer51 June 29th, 2009, 02:09 PM I can not comment on Kulna as i have never been there but what i can say to sylhetis (i am one of them) is to stop building all these shopping complexes.........theres too many,
and instead concentrate on real industry so that people can be employed.
beer51 June 29th, 2009, 02:19 PM New Bangladesh textile protests
Strikes and protests frequently disrupt the textile industry
Thousands of textile workers in Bangladesh have clashed with police for a third consecutive day in a protest over pay and conditions.
Police fired live bullets and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, who have set fire to at least one factory and forced the closure of many more.
Two people were killed during fierce confrontations with police over the weekend around the capital, Dhaka.
The textile industry in Bangladesh employs more than two million people.
The BBC's Mark Dummett, in Dhaka, says strikes and protests frequently disrupt the industry, which produce clothes for some of the world's biggest brands.
Police said that hundreds of workers attacked factories and blocked roads in a garment zone on the outskirts of Dhaka over the weekend.
The workers have said they were also protesting against the deaths of two colleagues over the weekend.
Bangladesh has more than 4,000 factories and ready-made garments account for most of the country's export earnings.
The minimum wage in Bangladesh is less than $25 (£15) per month.

Dude, the description of the project in the site is pretty funny..
We, all the people living in Sylhet, have the vision of modern world through the eyes of our abroad living friends and relatives. Very few have the chance or financial capability to travel abroad enjoying it physically. Even those abroad living friends and relatives don’t have the capacity to take all his relatives and friends to make it possible.
Besides we are living in such country where poverty doesn’t allows us to think otherwise to fulfill the up growing demand of modern technical, mechanical & IT support to forward any business in advance method. In this era, we the people of One City family have taken a plan to fulfill all our lake of needs. We had taken our physical position at large in the heart of Sylhet’s Business establishment center.
Now, we would like to utilize this hot cake for our One City family member’s, the mass Sylhety & the people of Bangladesh. It is such a project that will ensure even your nominee, his nominee’s secured future daily life. Completion of the project will give all of the Sylhety people’s position NO-1 in Bangladesh.
^^

I would say yes, the immediate area around Sylhet city and Chittagong city are similar in having a scattering of low hills.

tanzirian October 12th, 2009, 04:49 PM ^^ I love how in the last shot we can see Kean Bridge + Arch, Shah Jalal Shrine Mosque, Circuit House, and skyline density all in the same shot. Great composition!
Also nice to see how Sylhet is attuned to the aesthetic potential of its riverfront. Unfortunately Dhaka - where its riverfront is concerned - has neglected what was formerly the most desirable real estate in town.
manfrom October 12th, 2009, 08:56 PM Thanks, I'm afraid shahjalal aint in the pic though.
Yeh, I'd say the crossroad in zindabazar is literally the centre of sylhet.
Like other places one of the greatest problems for Sylhet is the narrow roads that simply cannot cope with the rapid urbanization

And a quick visual calculation based upon google maps indicates that its in the right direction.

Still dreaming April 14th, 2010, 01:01 AM Hi everyone. I received these images today and they are only a week old. I know a few people are interested in seeing the progress of Shahjalal Multiplan City and the images below will give you an idea of how far they have gone. For the first picture which is of Tomal building, they are one year behind and will possibly take another two years, maybe three.
For the second image which is Hizol building they are already 2 years behind and maube another year or so to complete. The only reason why I chose to buy from this company is because I heard that they were massive in Dhaka and had completed a lot of buildings but they have seriously failed in Sylhet. They dont want to talk about compensation, instead they are demanding almost 20% more of the original purchase price which has to be paid.
I will post more images in 6 months time inshallah.

Nice house. Where is it?
Still dreaming April 17th, 2010, 02:58 AM They want an extra 20% because the cost of materials has gone up and they are apparently losing out hence why no work was carried out for a year. My argument is that when the cost of materials went up they never actually did any work to the buildings so why are they complaining about costs. Also I was led to believe that Multiplan has all the finance necessary to complete the work yet they tell us a different story. I purchased this flat via a now bankrupt company by name of "First Solution" who didn't help matters at all. Also in the contract it doesn't say when the completion date is however it does say of the price of matrials go up then we will have to pay more money.
If anyone else has bought a flat in Multiplan I would like to hear from them so maybe together we can put a case forward or something.
beer51 April 19th, 2010, 02:27 PM Thats a poor excuse, but i guess these of sort of things happen in BDesh once your committed they've got you by the balls. Look on the bright side at leastt you will have a finished apartment in a few yrs time.

No, I think it's turn into a carbon copy of Dhaka city.

clearsky January 25th, 2011, 10:48 PM ^^^ Sylhet city corporation should learn from Dhaka and implement sound city plans. Otherwise the city will be cluttered with unplanned infrastructure. And the people of the city will start to face the same issues with regards to drainage, water, electricity etc similar as Dhaka. I think we lack sound vision as a nation. We always try to patch up issues rather than predicting issues before they occur. We can avoid lots of issues if we look beyond the present time.

Sylhet to be made a planned city

Sylhet: A new master plan for Sylhet city has been prepared.
Private real estate firm Sheltech has outlined a 20-year long programme to materialise the long cherished dream of the people of Sylhet.
The developer recently handed over the proposed master plan to Finance Minister AMA Muhith, also a lawmaker of Sylhet. It will soon be submitted to the concerned ministry for approval.
“We have materialised the dream of the people of Sylhet in the plan. Now it is up to the government to execute it,” Al Amin, deputy urban planer of Sheltech, told the daily sun.
He claimed the master plan has been framed in line with the latest concept of urbanisation.
Sylhet municipality started its journey in 1867 and was promoted to a city corporation in 2003.
Many initiatives were taken to make a master plan of the city in the past but none of them were implemented finally.
In January, the finance minister assigned Sheltech to prepare a master plan for the city. They worked hard for nine months and prepared the master plan as well as the structure plan and detailed area plan.
After the government approval the execution of the plan will start soon phase by phase, officials at the Sylhet city corporation said.
It will take 2030 to fully execute the master plan as per the proposal.
The total city area is expanded into 85 square kilometres from existing 26.5 square kilometres in the proposal.
According to the master plan, the existing main roads will be 85 feet wide and more than 30 kilometre roads will be constructed newly.
The master plan proposes construction of a huge number of link roads, commercial zones, development of drainage system, shifting the central jail, currently located at the heart of the city Bandar Bazar, to out of the city and building a park there.
For beautification of the city, Sheltech proposed reforming the banks of the Surma River, establishing a ‘water based park’ on the bank of the river at Shahjalal Uposhohor area and a river front recreation park on the northern bank of the river at Kanishayeel area.
The master plan recommended that the occupied canals should be recovered and transformed them into lakes.
Abdul Malek, executive engineer of Sylhet City Corporation, said once the master plan is executed problems of the city dwellers like water logging, traffic jam and lack of pure drinking water will be solved.
Sylhet Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran is hopeful that it will be possible to execute a major part of the master plan if the government provides required assistance.
Opinions and suggestions have been taken from the local stakeholders during the formulation of the plan, he added.
Local inhabitants of Sylhet are happy to know about the development plan of their city. But they are anxious whether the plan will be executed finally. Advocate Emad Ullah Shahidul Islam, president of district Bar Association, said a lot of good initiatives could not be carried out in the past due to inner conflict of the leaders of the ruling party.
He hoped this time the master plan will not go in vain like the previous ones.

Dhaka has a solid plan, it's just lacking the quick implementation of the plans. Mostly due to the non-peaceful transfer of power in government.
mirzazeehan January 26th, 2011, 09:54 PM Thanks for sharing these great pics devastation.Seems like sylhet had turned into a booming city.Govt should now look to improve the infrastructure of this city.

beer51 January 27th, 2011, 02:08 PM How long will it take to implement the master plan?
Sylhet needs to attract companies through government initiative and expats should stop building shopping malls there is already too many.

By government, I hope you meant local government.
devastasian February 2nd, 2011, 02:06 AM A 'solid' plan for Dhaka was mentioned, but sadly this somewhat ad hoc plan is only a glorified capital city centric development plan (for Bangladesh). I understand Dhaka is the nations' commercial, political, judicial and cultural hub, but it is unsustainable (and will eventually be its own un-doing). Investment needs to be fairly allocated to regional divisions and cities, I would even go as far as to say I would like to see divisional empowerment and some form of devolution.
Sylhet (and other centres) around Bangladesh are neglected, it is fact. It is the reason why though my family are Sylheti through-and-through half are now located in Dhaka for purely business reasons.
The development you see is purely down to Sylhetis themselves - and I include the expat community here.
Sorry, rant over, but this is the Sylhet thread and I am just airing my personal views. Can you tell we get a bit hot under the collar at times :tongue2:
Anyway, the theme for the below is: hustle and bustle:

It is the truth, just look at the projects that are under way or completed by expat/ sylhetis.
Government doesn't realise the amount of idle money in sylhet that could be utilised. What happened to the free zone that sylhet was supposed to get.
clearsky February 3rd, 2011, 07:38 PM ^^ You are correct that we need to decentralize our cities. HM Ershad tried to do that by moving the judicial branch out of Dhaka. But the judges at that time protested and refused to work form courtrooms located in different divisions. In terms of importance, all parts of BD are EQUIALLY important. However, due to variation of opportunities people tend to like Dhaka the most as that's where all the top institutions can be found.
People of Sylhet do have representatives in the govt. So, they are not under represented. As far as I know, they haven't or are not expressing the same level of frustration about Sylhet, perhaps like you and me!
devastasian February 3rd, 2011, 08:43 PM I am not advocating a move of the judiciary, or for Sylhet be allowed to draw up its own economic policies for example, but rather devolution of authority to reflect those issues that affect Sylhet. It's the same sort of idea as authorising local hospital management to procure it's own medicines as opposed to it being done centrally.
I would hope this be more efficient with regards to policy formulation - and possibly even more democratic - allowing for 'minor' changes in spending/taxation etc. for the betterment of everybody.
It's a shame when you fly out of Chittagong en-route to Dhaka; the cities aren't even comparable... I'm not even sure if Sylhet would show on the radar!
You really can't overemphasise the importance of a tangible regional development policy when discussing national development I think this is the point.

Sylhetis are not just not " under-represented",they have actually been running the finance ministry of Bangladesh for decades.Saifur Rahman, who has been the longest serving finance minister of our country, was from Sylhet.Kibria, who replaced him in 1996 as finance minister, was also from Sylhet.
The current finance minister,Abul Mal Muhith, who replaced saifur and kibria..is also from sylhet.
So sylhetis have been running the finance ministry of bangladesh and making our national budgets for decades.Had discontent been so widespread among the general people of sylhet, they would have not elected these people again and again as members of parliament from sylhet division which in turn led them to becoming ministers. However,I do agree that the government should allocate greater amounts for the development of sylhet which because of its expat population has great potential of attracting investment and becoming an important economic center.
