View Full Version : Sylhet - Cityscapes and Landmarks
Tmac November 8th, 2004, 09:35 PM Nestled in the picturesque Surma Valley amidst scenic tea plantations and lush green tropical forests, Sylhet is a prime attraction for all tourists visiting Bangladesh. Lying between the Khasia and the Jaintia hills on the north, and the Tripura hills on the south, Sylhet breaks the monotony of the flatness of this land by a multitude of terraced tea gardens, rolling countryside and the exotic flora and fauna. Here the thick tropical forests abound with many species of wild life, scented orange groves and luxuriant pineapple plantations spread their aroma around the typical hearth and homes of the Manipuri Tribal maidens famous for their dance.
The Sylhet valley is formed by a beautiful, winding pair of rivers named the Surma and the Kushiara both of which are fed by innumerable hill streams from the north and the south. The valley has a good number of haors which are big natural depressions. During winter these haors are vast stretches of green land, but in the rainy season they turn into a turbulent sea. These haors provide a sanctuary to the millions of migratory birds who fly from across the Himalayas to escape the severe Siberian winters.
Sylhet has also a very interesting and rich history. Before the conquest by the Muslims, it was ruled by local chieftains. In 1303, the great Saint Hazrat Shah Jalal came to Sylhet from Delhi with a band of 360 disciples to preach Islam and defeated the then Raja Gour Gobinda, Sylhet thus became a district of saints, shrines and daring but virile people.
Its rich potentialities became easily attractive and the 18th century Englishmen made their fortune in tea plantation. About 80 km. from Sylhet town connected by road and rail, Srimangal, which is known as the tea capital of Bangladesh, is the actual tea centre of the area. For miles and miles around, the visitor can see the tea gardens spread like a green carpet over the plain land or on the sloping hills. A visit to the tea plantation in Sylhet is a memorable experience. Sylhet, the tea granary of Bangladesh, not only has over 150 tea gardens but also proudly possesses three largest tea gardens in the world both in area and production.

The Shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal
Among the several places of historical interest in Sylhet town is the shrine of Saint Hazrat Shah Jalal. Even today, more than six hundred years after his death, the shrine is visited by innumerable devotees of every caste and creed. who make the journey from far away places. Legend says, the great Saint who came from Delhi to preach Islam and defeated the then Hindu Raja (King) Gour Gobinda, transformed the watchcraft followers of the Raja into catfishes which are still alive in the tank adjacent to the shrine. Swords, the holy Quran, and the robes of the holy Saint are still preserved in the shrine.

cntower December 24th, 2004, 02:19 AM Is London Fried Chicken a local franchise company?
ameer December 24th, 2004, 04:39 AM I like Chittagong much better. The tea gardens are nice and green, and the waterfall looks pleasant. But as a city, it needs more modern buildings... like the Bluewater Shopping Center.
Golden Boy December 24th, 2004, 04:10 PM Is London Fried Chicken a local franchise company?

Golden Boy December 24th, 2004, 04:25 PM I like Chittagong much better. The tea gardens are nice and green, and the waterfall looks pleasant. But as a city, it needs more modern buildings... like the Bluewater Shopping Center.
I Agree with you Sylhet needs more modern buildings, Saying that there is lot more going on, lot of u/c and completed projects like
Millenium shopping centre
Rose view shopping complex and best western Hotel
Tower garden apartments and shopping centre
galleria shopping centre and apartments
sonargaon shopping city
Eastern plaza
Multiplan Shah jalal city, uposhahar sylhet
Paragon city
al hamra shopping city
Blue water shopping city
Dreamland land amusement park
Sylhet plaza
Dallas shopping centre
And many many more, i'll take some pics when i next visit Sylhet in the new year, i am also opening my own website about sylhet very soon.
As compared to other cities in Bangladesh, Sylhet is probaly third after Dhaka and chittagong compared to developnent and under constuctions, Dhaka being the capital city and Chittagong being the main port city ...sylhet is also one of the richest places in Bangladesh.

Tmac September 6th, 2006, 08:33 PM Uplift projects on in Sylhet
A large number of development projects have been implemented in the city during the last five years and works on many are progressing fast.
Local sources said different projects have also been taken up to develop Osmani International Airport including extension of its runway.
About Tk 1.0 billion (100 crore) has been allocated to renovate different roads under the Sylhet City Corporation. VIP roads were constructed from Ambarkhana point to Circuit House via Chowhatra, Rikabibazar, Sheikhghat and Taltala.
The government has constructed a new building for the Circuit House and also implemented beautification projects in front of it.
Measures were also taken to remove water stagnancy in the city at a cost of Tk 220 million. A new building for the Press Club will also be constructed at the old site.
Several development and beautification projects have been implemented for the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal. Educational infrastructures were also developed during the period.
The government has allocated Tk 250 million for constructing a water treatment plant in the city to ensure supply of sufficient water while Tk 250 million more for installing and renovating electricity lines.
Some development projects have also been taken for mosques and temples, official sources said.

Dhakaiya January 29th, 2007, 10:33 AM why does Sylhet always get ignored when it comes to federally funded development?
You see, except Dhaka & Chittagong, government wants to bring all cities to an equal level of development. Sylhet already has a lot of educated people and development is coming in plenty from NRBs. There are schools every here and there already. Government wants to focus on the formerly famine prone regions like North Bengal I believe. But I think Sylhet should be given a boost from the government. It has a great potential of becoming a large metropolis as well as a centre for tourism.

Pakia March 19th, 2007, 01:39 PM So Amazed by the developments in Sylhet. Some of the towers esp. the new ones could just be in any so-called developed countries.
Now all Bangladesh needs is to promote itself to the rest of the world to shed their old image of it to encourage tourism. It'd futhur enhance its pace of developments.
I would like to be the spokesperson for Bangladesh in Pakistan to let us see how Bangladesh has changed so fast for better and probably it'd inspire us to the same degree too.
I definitely think tourism between Pakistan and Bangladesh would be good for both countries in many ways and may even help in resolving some of the still pending issues.

zayiaf62089 May 22nd, 2007, 03:31 AM This was some news from May 9,2007 from Financial Express:
Sylhet cardiac hospital foundation laying today
President Iajuddin Ahmed is likely to lay the foundation stone of a 100-bed cardiac hospital today (Wednesday) at Purbo Shahi Eidgah.
The hospital, involving Tk 250 million (25 crore), is being constructed in the city to provide modern treatment facilities to the cardiac patients.
Social Welfare Adviser Geeteara Safiya Choudhury, Health Adviser ASM Matiur Rahman, Secretary General of National Heart Foundation Abdul Malik will be present as the special guests.
The six-story hospital will be built on one acre of land under the auspices of National Heart Foundation.
The initial budget of the Tk 250 million-project was estimated at Tk 107 million. Social Welfare Ministry will provide 80 per cent fund, while the National Heart Foundation the remaining 20 per cent.
The construction work is expected to be completed by 2009.
Official sources said the 100-bed hospital would be upgraded into a 200-bed hospital later.
Publicity secretary of the hospital Abu Taleb Murad said the hospital would be constructed as a non-profit service-oriented organisation.
Treatment would be provided to the heart patients at a lower cost while the poor patients to get 30 per cent discount facility.
There are no modern facilities for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases in the district at present.
Although Osmani Medical College Hospital provides some services, but those are quite insufficient against the increasing number of cardiac patients.

Tmac June 24th, 2007, 10:26 AM Special zone in Sylhet soon to draw investment
Foreign Affairs Advisor Dr. Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury has said work on extension of Sylhet Osmani international airport runway will be completed within a month and Hajj flights will take off from the airport this year. He was talking to newsmen at Sylhet Circuit House Thursday night.
Work on setting up of a catering institute of international standard in Sylhet will begin in January next year to cope with the huge demand for skilled manpower in catering industry in UK and other European countries.
"I discussed the matter with British High Commissioner Anwar Chowdhury. They are also in a positive mood", he said.
Expatriates in UK will also be involved with the institute, he said.
The government is going to set up a special economic zone in Sylhet soon to draw more investment from expatriates and preliminary work fort this has already been started, he said.
The Board of Investment has been involved in it and work will begin in three months, Dr Iftekhar said.

zayiaf62089 June 24th, 2007, 08:43 PM although I think the special economic zone is very good for the city of sylhet, the problem of sylhet has always been that the government has always paid too much attention to expatriate/foreign investment instead of local and domestic investment which is clearly helping Dhaka and Chittagong.
Zaki June 25th, 2007, 04:42 PM although I think the special economic zone is very good for the city of sylhet, the problem of sylhet has always been that the government has always paid too much attention to expatriate/foreign investment instead of local and domestic investment which is clearly helping Dhaka and Chittagong.
But is it really local and domestic investment that is helping Dhaka? See what you have with domestic investment is just recycling of money that was already there. With foreign investment you are getting new money pumped into the economy that not only helps the region but helps the entire nations economy grow.
snoq June 25th, 2007, 09:52 PM But is it really local and domestic investment that is helping Dhaka? See what you have with domestic investment is just recycling of money that was already there. zayiaf is absolutely right. GOB does not do enough to encourage domestic investment. While its true that we have to bring FDI to accelerate development and industry, domestic investment still remains the largest engine for Bangladesh growth. In recent months this interim entity/govt has suppressed domestic investments and investment from middle east to court show piece energy plundering investment scheme from next door neighbor.
Notion that domestic investment just recycling money is utterly false and lacks fundamental understanding of economics 101. Domestic investment creates new industry, jobs, profit, income and these in turn allow reinvestment and expansion of economy. Not to mention domestically invested export industry brings "new money" from foreign countries as profit. Those profits get reinvested in local economy. Garments and textile industries are prime examples of that. Local investment today brings much of export earning or "new money" for Bangladesh. Besides, there are plenty of pictures in this forum on Square group, Beximco and other big local business houses. Perhaps these pictures should be helpful for understanding impact of local investments beyond recycling money. And yes, its local investment and businesses that changed and changing Bangladesh/Dhaka way way more than any other source of investment.

Well I am not an economics major but I would think that foreign investment equals 100% new money compared to domestic investment which can lead to new money through export. Also from what I have seen, most of the infrastructure development in Dhaka and Chittagong are happening because of foreign investment not local investment. Please list some infrastructure that was built due to domestic private investment cause I am curious.

Discussion is about how domestic investment generates jobs, revenue and profit aka “new money”. On that I stand by my statements. Discussion about infrastructure development is completely another matter; more so when it comes to investment. For one infrastructure sector investment is not as open for private investments as other sectors. Infrastructure development almost entirely done by govt but most recently some investment proposal has been approved like jatrabari flyover (a joint venture of local and foreign investment). But some sectors like tourism infrastructure is open for investment and see how cox’s bazaar has changed by private investment. If you are interested discussing infrastructure I suggest open another thread or if there is one already use that.

Zaki June 28th, 2007, 03:21 AM I am curious about the traffic in sylhet. Dhaka and chittagong are horrible though they are taking steps to fix it. Seeing how fast sylhet is growing, is it the same situation there?
zayiaf62089 June 28th, 2007, 04:36 AM Actually traffic is becoming a rapidly growing problem in sylhet. I have relatives in sylhet who say that driving is so bad now because rickshaws always take up all the space on the road. Also from tmac's first photo from his last post pretty much shows a busy intersection with lots of traffic.
tanzirian June 28th, 2007, 06:09 PM The Dhaka scenario will be repeated elsewhere...eventually traffic will get to a point where rickshaws are excluded from main road. In the end in a land as crowded as ours, modern and efficient public transport is the only long term solution.

uzaman901 August 27th, 2007, 03:26 PM Hey guys, Assalamu Alaykum,
Just wondering whether either one of you can fill in on whether I could enrol at a college in Bangladesh to improve my Bangla, I can speak Sylheti Bangla to conversational level, but really would want to lern shodhu bangla.
Furthermore, I am expecting it to take 6 months of dedicated study and in that time I am planning to rent a room at the GARDEN TOWER in Sylhet as I have heard it is a secure, modern complex.
I would very much appreciate whether you could provide me with any information or pictures!
Take Care.
Wa Salaam.

meghnarmajhi August 27th, 2007, 05:50 PM Walaikumassalam Mohammad (uzaman),
I don't know of any place in Bangladesh where they help improve spoken Bangla. when I was in Dhaka, there were some short courses on improving Bangla pronunciation - specially around ekushe. A friend of mine with strong Bikrampuira accent made very good improvement from a course held in Dhaka College. I'm sure they still run such courses in Dhaka, Sylhet, or other places.
If you live in a city like New York or London - you maybe able to find something in your city. Check local Bangla newspapers. I remember of a course on spoken Bangla held in Astoria, NY a while ago. Tmac or some other forumer - familiar with Sylhet - maybe able to help you find some place in Sylhet.
Nice to have you here. Post pictures, messages, comments ... Since you'll be visiting Sylhet soon, we're hoping to see some pictures from your visit.
Ma'assalama
uzaman901 August 27th, 2007, 07:31 PM Thank you Megh...
I have actually recently come back from Bangladesh after spending 3 weeks there.
I live in London. I think I will begin to look at classes in UK and then fine tune it with the 6 months in Bangladesh which I plan to do after I complete my MASTERS inshallah.

Sylheti August 31st, 2007, 12:13 AM I think that Greater Sylhet region is discriminated against and neglected by the Dhakaiya govt in terms of financial investment.
Investment in our region and prosperity depends on 'londoni' expats (500,000 Brit-Banladeshis in the UK, 95% from Sylhet region). This is why Sylhet has soooo many shopping malls, supermarkets, hotels and a generally strong retail service sector.
However, lack of govt initiative means we have no garments or other industries (most of which concentrated around Dhaka). This means most Sylhetis have fewer job opportunities in industries and reliant on relatives living abroad sending remmittances (1 pound=140 taka).
This economic discrimination is one reason I hope Sylhet will one day become a country in it's own right. What has Sylhet gained from the billions invested by expat Sylhetis in Bangladesh since 1971? Diddly squat!!

If that happens then we will have to ask Tmac to step down as Bangladeshi moderator, since he would become a foreigner :D
PS No offense intended, Sylheti. Welcome to the forum.

Why not? Surely history is a precedent? Didn't the then East Pakistan (Bengal) secede from united Pakistan over cultural and economic discrimination? And Sylhet is not Comilla or Rangpur....our ppl pour billions in foreign exchange into the govt coffers every year. Therefore, we should see more development in our regions. And Sylhet is the business and retail capital not Chittagong in my opinion.
You'll find that most Sylhetis speak Sylheti not Dhakakaiya. Mix only with Sylhetis socially eg. marriage and wish to keep expat wealth only within our family groups. This is due to our difference from other Bengalis.

Well, don't let us Skyscrapercity folks stop you from seceding, if that's what you want...but drop the confrontational attitude. This subforum was the result of several years of effort by some of us, most notably Tmac...the purpose is casual discussion and picture sharing among friends, and showcasing our country to others. There are some among us who post only for confrontation and controversy...that is not the reason why this place exists.

Okay okay, wage the war if you want to..but we will still keep Saifur Rahman(sylheti) as our finance misniter and Tmac as our mod:lol:
and as Tan pointed out, theres no room for these arguments here,so lets end this here.

Saifur Rahman is elected from Sylhet region. This is where his powerbase is. Have you ever heard him read the annual budget? He speaks in Sylheti only and thus would be more comfortable in Sylhet. .He is on Channel S (a Brit Sylheti channel) so much along with His Excellency Anwar Chaudhury (British High Commissioner to BD originally from Shunamgonj).
You can keep TMC. The fellows tag reads ‘Dhaka-Ottawa-DC’. I don’t think it is a ‘personal attack’ to enquire why he then considers himself Sylheti. He can ask me to clarify my background too. I don’t mind.
Ps. The fact Sylhetis dislike the Dhakaiya-centric nature of Bangladesh has been highlighted before me on this thread.
If threads on Skyscraper continue to give prominence to Dhaka then expect more complaints. Highlighting Bangladesh to others means more than highlighting certain upmarket districts of Dhaka alone. Lets see some shanty towns and bostis that dot Dhaka as well.
meghnarmajhi August 31st, 2007, 02:55 PM We are very proud of Anwar Chowdhury and Saifur Rahman. We all have local accent. Dhakaiya accent is Bangladeshi and so are Chittagong, Noakhali, Barisal, Rangpur, ............ They are all very beautiful. A lot of us don't have "proper" Bangla accent. We see them on TV and we meet them in person. Most of us have accent of the part of Bangladesh we are from.
Start posting here. Make Sylhet the most prominent place in here. People from all over Bangladesh should do the same.
Any friends from Rajshahi and Khulna area? Come on guys. We need your hekp too.
Sylheti bhai, look around - we don't put anybody down here.
Tmac August 31st, 2007, 05:52 PM Sylheti, perhaps you haven't gone through the two successful Sylhet threads here. Sylhet - Bangladesh and Sylheti Projects. We all have done our best to find news and photos of Sylhet and post them there. Many people post photos from their trips to Bangladesh here. That's why there are so many photos of Dhaka. If you search the internet you can find Dhaka news and photos real easily. Such is not the case for rest of Bangladesh. Why don't British Sylhetis post their photos from their trips to Sylhet here? We would love that. I haven't seen you post any pics of Sylhet here yet. I haven't seen you post any news (that hasn't been posted already) on Sylhet here yet. What are you waiting for? Instead of complaining you should show us how great Sylhet is. You say there are half a million Sylhetis living in UK? How many of them ever participated here? How many of them ever posted any item on Sylhet here? At least the forumers in skyscrapercity posted 145 times (combined post count on Sylhet city and Sylhet projects threads) here.
Please show us how we are ignoring Sylhet. Tell us what news item we failed to post recently? We have posted any items that we can find. The Sylhet aviation news that you had posted earlier were already posted months ago when the news was RECENT. If you have anything new to add to that then please do so in the aviation thread. Can you find another forum anywhere that has more photos and news on Sylhet than what we have here? I gurantee you that we have the largest collection of Sylhet photos posted anywhere in the internet. Please go through every page of both the threads and I am sure you would be very satisfied. Infact we even posted photos of Sylheti hotels and motels in the Bangladesh - Hotels, Motels thread. Check how many Kean Bridge photos posted in Bangladesh - Bridges and Highways thread. Look through Bangladesh - Tourism and Beautiful Bangladesh for many photos of Jaflong, Tamabil, Madhabkunda, etc.
We are all waiting to see all the wonderful posts that you will be making in the future. We are waiting to see all the shopping malls, plazas and historic monuments in Sylhet. Please find new photos of Sylhet and post them here. I am sure it will be very easy for you to find images of Sylhet.
zayiaf62089 August 31st, 2007, 10:54 PM I understand how you feel sylheti because I have had these thoughts too. Bet when you look at the situation from a bigger perspective, other cities of Bangladesh have received absolutely no involvement from the goverment whilst Sylhet has improved with the goverment's action towards improving the aviation industry. We should appreciate what we have gotten already from the government. Yet as Bangladesh does improve Sylhet will definitely be on the agendas of the government inshallah.
tanzirian August 31st, 2007, 11:06 PM How many poor countries with small land mass have multiple major foci of development? In good time development will reach all regions of the country. Population also is a consideration...Sylhet is the 6th largest city in Bangladesh per census, and that taken into account the city has done quite well relative to larger and older divisional capitals like Khulna and Rajshahi. Remittances from Britain count for an increasingly smaller chunk of BD foreign revenue and Sylheti representation in areas of growing migration such as US and MidEast are far smaller than in Britain. All that considered Sylhet has done quite well for itself. No doubt it will do even better as the country progresses...and I hope the same for all other BD metros as well.

Prof Kamal in his presentation said a large number of Bangladeshi expatriates living in the UK, USA and in other foreign countries are from Sylhet and they have been contributing greatly to the country's economy for long. He claimed that at least 50 percent of the nation's remittances from abroad, come from the expatriates with roots in Sylhet.

The Dhakaiya are stealing an unfair share of the countries wealth....(just like the Punjabis in Pakistan) and so before ppl start posting photos and articles about Dhaka this should be considered. Dhaka is but one city. Most Sylhetis and others living in the differing provinces simply don't care about Dhaka.
Ppl from other regions hate the Dhakaiya because they are big headed arrogant theives. Just why is foreign remittances sent by Sylhetis being spent outside the region? Where is all the money from our gas, oil and coal resources going? Into the fat coffers ofc the Dhakaiya elite I bet! All these pictures of glitsy buildings are a result!

I have my doubts as to whether you are a Sylheti in the ethnic sense. Your nik tells me you grew up in Dhaka. Merely having a Sylheti great grandfather doesn't make you a Sylheti. You have to be culturally so. At least speak our language. You don't.

Tmac September 1st, 2007, 06:19 PM so Sylheti you still haven't told us how we are ignoring Sylhet in this forum. What do you want us to do? You want us to stop posting Dhaka photos? Can you show us another website where they have more photos of Sylhet posted than this forum? Can you show us another website where they have more news on Sylhet than this one? If Sylhet photos aren't available on the internet then is it our fault? It sounds like you are upset at the government for using Sylheti money elsewhere. If so then why not take it up with the government? Why are you taking it out on us? What have we done? We find photos of Bangladesh and post them here. Sylhet photos are simply not available anywhere. The ones that are available we already posted here. Please reply to this post. I will be waiting.

Thought processes and mind set such above are impediment towards nation building. Just because Chittagong and Sylhet have dialects distinctly different than standard Bangla, do not make them aliens in Bangladesh. Imagine if people in leadership positions harbor such feelings. Does it mean that Sylhet would like to secede from Bangladesh? Resentments vented in the definition of "Dakhaiya" (as opposed to Sylheti) sounds the like classic complaints of our parents and grandparents that East Pakistan contibutes more to Pakistan's economy yet it receives less development funds. Don't get me wrong, for such complaints were legitimate and the facts remains we, Bangladeshis, are distinctly different from Pakistanis but, certainly not from Sylhetis.
Bangladesh is too small a country to encourage "regionalism". We ought to be Bangladeshi first. Every other identity is secondary.
People in this forum do not deserve blame for posting pictures mostly from Dhaka as it is the focal point of infrastructure development. Personally, I do not like it and hope that other cities shall soon witness such growth. But that is a policy that ought to be actively promoted and facilitated by the government. If other cities develop even at hakf the pace of Dhaka, the resultant fact would be less population pressure on the capital city.
khalek September 3rd, 2007, 01:45 PM It's not that i meant all Sylhetis act like that.. but almost all the sylhetis i met, they all are proud to be sylhetis more than Bangladeshis... Pride is alright but too much pride is not good
meghnarmajhi September 4th, 2007, 12:28 AM I don’t mean to drag this unpleasant conversation on and on…. But we should refrain from making irresponsible comments. Let’s be careful not to say things that will hurt this friendly environment.

khalek October 6th, 2007, 08:57 AM absolutely fantastic city... very clean and green!
s786khan October 28th, 2007, 06:02 PM Ok .. I think as a Bangladeshi I should share my thoughts on this thread...
Sylhet.. Dhaka.. where do these cities come from - BANGLADESH... we are ALL Bangladeshis people.. we are from ONE country.,. Dhaka is our capital city so naturally most investment will be made there.. once Dhaka is fully developed money will be invested in other citys.. but for a contry to prosper sometimes its best to sort out your capital first than slowly expand other cities.. a country can grow faster this way.. do one thing a step at a time.. rather than start developing all over the country and take 50 years to complete every thing.. its better to do it city by city!
I read on this forum 95% of people in the UK are Sylheti... I dont think thats true now.. its more like 90% cause a lot of people from dhaka.. primarily students are comming to the UK.. (they benefit us alot cause most houses they rent are sylheti owned in east london!) but they are not citizens... they are here with visas who will eventually return.. so its safe to say about 98% of British citizens are from Sylhet.. and recently the Bangladeshi government has given the UK citizens of Bangladeshi origin to be able to vote in their elections - NO OTHER COUNTRY... why is this? cause the government and the country survives primiraly from the money generated from remitences and if it stops the UK Bangladeshi primarily Sylhetis voting in their elections its in danger of loosing this income which it generates from the banking industry!
Lets not forget we are all Bangladeshis and its our interest for our capital to first expand so we can as a country... Sylhet will belive me be a world class city one day.. maybe in 30-40 years time... but first we have to make our capital a world class city - and for those who say that doesnt benefit us Sylhetis.. GET REAL - no one is stopping u from investing in Dhaka.. or benefiting from its growth - you too are Bangladeshi and have every right to go and benefit from the growth which is being experienced by Dhaka!!!
The proposed one city project (bigger than the renowned Bashundara City) in Sylhet is a clear example of the financial might in Sylheti hand.... trust me there will be other major projects which will awe the people of Bangladesh .. and these major projects will be no where else but the beautiful Sylhet!!!
A lot of families I know in london are investing a lot of money in Bangladesh... when I say Bangladesh I mean Sylhet cause most Bangladeshis in London are Sylheti.. so Sylhet may not be getting investment from the central govt but the investment per squre acre in Sylhet is higher than Dhaka..
An average Sylheti family living in London invests Tk 50lac a year in Sylhet .. now if there are 500,000 Bangladeshis and there are on average 4 member in each family.. that means thare are roughly 125,000 Sylheti familes in the UK.. not all invest much money in Sylhet.. but at least 50,000 families do... so work out what 50,000 times 50lac is and see how much investment is being made in Sylhet... the development on Sylhet in the last 5 years has awestrucked the whole of Bangladesh.... give another 10 years and you will see jaws drop!
Tmac October 29th, 2007, 02:49 AM I hope Sylhet and rest of Bangladesh continue to develop. We are all looking forward to the One City project.

You are merely reinforcing my points regarxding the Bangladeshi (Dhaka dominated) governments discrimination in the level of investment in the Greater Sylhet region. Our region, and especially expats like us, contribute to billions of pounds in investment over the years. Furthermore Bangali Sylhetis pay taxes like everyone else. So why should our region miss out? The predominance of photos from Dhaka and numbers of Dhakaiya members on this forum just goes to show the dispartity. If East Pak could demand separation due in part to economic discrimination, why not Sylhet? Do you think ordinary Sylhetis like being robbed? [/QUOTE]

You are very naïve, my friend..
Most of these students will try to remain in the UK for a better life. Many of them are overstayers. Others merely use student visas to enter the UK to work eg. In Sylheti owned restaurants and businesses.
Lets not forget we are all Bangladeshis and its our interest for our capital to first expand so we can as a country... Sylhet will belive me be a world class city one day.. maybe in 30-40 years time... but first we have to make our capital a world class city –
You are joking right? Try to make the same arguments when talking about the Liberation War. Most people will beat you with a shoe. If Bangladeshis didn’t tolerate misappropriation of central govt funding in 1971, why should Sylhetis????? Do you like being robbed? Wouldn’t you protest?
Development funds concentrated in Dhaka means less investments in your family/friends and their job opportunities in Sylhet, Habiganj or Moulvi Bazar….
Agree that the Sylheti economy is booming. However, There is no reason Sylhet should rely so heavily on expat financing while the govt uses funds elsewhere.
khalek November 17th, 2007, 08:55 AM Adventure World looks pretty good..
mirzazeehan November 18th, 2007, 12:01 AM "Sylheti",you must understand that the population of Dhaka does not consist of people from one particular district/town or city.Infact, you would rarely find a "dhakaiya" living outside "puran dhaka/old town".The population of Dhaka consists of people from all corners of the country,so there is no need to feel that one group of people,or people from one part of the country is dominating the whole nation.
s786khan November 18th, 2007, 12:32 AM Hmm Sylheti.. good luck in separating Sylhet from the rest of Bangladesh :)
If you feel so strongly about this.. than insted of moaning do something about it... who said the priminister has to be a 'Dhakiya' why dont you put a Sylheti in power and make all the investments in Sylhet?
Sylheti.. Dhakiya... dont look at things that divide us.. look at things that unite us - we are all Bangladeshis.. united we stand.. divided we fall.. so dont let your anger push for a divided Bangladesh.. let your fraustration do something about the unjustice you feel.. no one is stopping you.
It seems you have a issue with this Bangladesh thread having alot of posts and pictures of Dhaka.. well from what I see most of the regular posters are Dhakiya and ofcourse they will put pictures they have easy access to maybe from their digital cameras! NO ONE is stopping you nor me (also a Sylheti) posting tons of pictures on Sylhet and the beauty of it.. so insted of moaning do something about it..
.. And finally in the words of Muhammed SWAS "None of you truly believes until he loves/wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself." .. first and foremost most of us are Muslims.. Bangladeshis.. Sylheti/Dhakiya secondly... and its prequisite of us to wish for our brothers what we wish for ourselves.. as a Sylheti be happy with the prosperity of your brothers in Dhaka.. .. and if as you feel your Dhakiya brothers dont wish for you what they wish for themselves than they will be accountable in the court of Allah SWT for their actions... intentions. - SO CHILL and dont worry too much about worldly things like tall buildings, better roads and investments.

Well we are limited to places with reasonable internet access, places where tourists visit, and places with expats abroad. But even given these limitations I think we still manage to get a reasonable variety here.

Sylheti November 29th, 2007, 01:51 PM Guys,
I've heard of more than a few instances of some BJP fanatic Hindutvabadi Indians coming to Bangladeshi/Pakistani forums -- posing as one of the locals -- and then try to destroy the atmosphere by flame-baiting methods. I'm putting this up in the context of the recent 'Sovereign Sylhet' campaigner.
Be vigilant -- and take everything with a grain of salt!
Whenever someone involved in Bangladeshi political circles doesn't like the truth ('usith kotha') they turn to calling them 'Hindu agents'. lol

While I disagree with your viewpoints, Sylheti, I agree that such name calling should not be acceptable here.
Tmac November 29th, 2007, 06:28 PM Name calling and mentioning of other countries and religions in a derogatory manner will not be tolerated even if you believe your claims are true. I can't believe I still have to mention this. Poeple please come to your senses. This forum is not your living room. Please do not embarrass the rest of us with your insensitive remarks.

manbil777 December 18th, 2007, 05:48 AM I owe an apology to the gentleman from Sylhet. Calling him names or maligning India was not my intention -- if you read my post carefully.
I do have sensitivities like others and there are distinctions between Hindus and Hindutva-followers (many of my friends are in fact Hindus). However -- bringing up trolls and flame-baiters was uncalled for, and for that off-topic faux pas I must tender an apology.
From now on I will concentrate on posts that are of benefit to the posters here -- how about improving the photography? There is lots of room for improvement there and I may start a new thread on that.

I agree. However, most of the photos are taken by ametures with simple cameras, often attached with cell phones. So, the quality isn't the best. I have read several people mentioning in the banner forum that we lacked quality pictures and rightfully so.
I remember you from BD military forum where I used to contribute a while back. So I have to say howdy!

Unlike Manbil I have nothing to apologise for. Calling Dhakaiyas Dhakaiya and Sylhetis Sylheti is hardly discriminatory. As for Tmac, the man is culturally a Dhakaiya and I merely observe that he cannot pass himself off as one of us.
ps. Has anybody visited Manbil’s military forum? It’s a very rightwing militaristic platform for extreme anti-India/Hindu ‘discourse’. It’s full of Pakistanis who often deny the massacres/rapes of Bengalis in 1971! Besides, Bangladesh quite rightly has a miniscule military. Unlike the Pakistanis, we Bengslis are a practical people who recognise that economic development comes first rather than the false spectre of ‘military might’. .
clearsky December 18th, 2007, 06:45 PM ^^I think it is very important that we stay within the objective of this forum. This is a skyscraper forum and we should concentrate on the topic related to infrastructure of the country only, specially keeping the political bickering out as much as possible. We should be thankful for having such forum because the forum gave us the opportunity to see more of Bangladesh than we have ever seen or will see in person.
As a nation we have too much divisions on irrelevant and inane issues that have seriously hampered our progress and prosperity over the years. Lets try to keep our divisions outside of this forum or amongst ourselves and work for a common goal, at least here.

G2G January 9th, 2008, 04:01 AM Well.. I had been to Sylhet last year almost after 6 years since I last visited and I have to say, i was impressed with the city structure. The city had pavements almost all major roads and the city looked much more in planned than even Dhaka. Infact, I think, Sylhet is the city to live now in Bangladesh and way better than Dhaka. However, it doesnt take that long to destroy such good thing and Unplanned Urbanization and building construction should stop. The city have enough green environemnt and it should be protected at any cost. Development should come in proper way. If the concerend take correct measures and plan the city accordingly, I dont see why it wont be the best city to live on in Bangladesh.

nayeem007 April 12th, 2008, 05:18 AM Returned British migrants fuel luxury home boom in Bangladesh
1 day ago
SYLHET, Bangladesh (AFP) — British restaurateur Mohammed Nannu admires the new crystal chandeliers adorning his mansion just a stone's throw from the impoverished Bangladeshi village where he grew up.
The luxury six-bedroom house was a dream come true for his late father who emigrated to Britain with his wife and four sons but always longed to return to Sylhet, the region once home to most of Britain's Bangladeshi immigrants.
"My father devoted a lot of time to bringing us up and so we wanted to build a home for him and my mother here," said Nannu, 33, from the British city of Birmingham where he and his brothers run a string of family-owned restaurants.
"Dad had a small stall here selling tea and biscuits. He went to Britain when I was 10 planning to earn a living and come back. We settled but this was always his home," he said.
No expense was spared in the construction of the house which was finished earlier this year shortly after Nannu's father's death.
A Japanese themed garden complete with artificial lakes and bridges will provide the final touch.
Standing on the edge of a dusty Sylhet village in northeastern Bangladesh, the mansion is one of many built by former migrants and their families.
They were among the thousands who began leaving from the late 1950s onwards armed with little more than a determination to work their way out of poverty.
Over the past five decades many have prospered in Britain -- especially running "Indian" restaurants - and are now keen to spend part of their twilight years in their homeland.
Across the region, the returnees are fuelling a building boom that in some places has seen prices saor by as much as 300 percent, according to Nannu.
Anwar Ali's family joined his grandparents in Britain in 1987 where the family runs three restaurants. Largely due to Ali's own success in the property business, they also own a smart detached house, which they have named "The White Palace," in Sylhet city.
Hundreds of luxury homes have sprung up here and across the surrounding countryside since the late 1980s.
In the street, naked beggar children play in the dirt but inside the house is full of marble and gilt-edged decorations, ornately carved wooden doors and the latest electronic gadgets. A gleaming silver four-wheel-drive car is parked on the driveway outside.
"I am doing quite well now but I never dreamed of being in this position. My parents are very proud of me because we had nothing before," said Ali, 36, who divides his time between Northampton, north of London, and Sylhet.
Although Ali's parents wanted a home in Sylhet for sentimental reasons, his own generation is largely focussed on the business opportunities opening up in Bangladesh where 40 percent of the population still lives on a dollar a day.
"All British Bangladeshis are in the property and land business," said Ali, keeping one eye on an English rugby match being broadcast on satellite television.
Ironically, Ali says that while his parents and grandparents went to Britain in search of a better life, Bangladesh's plentiful source of cheap labour makes life here increasingly attractive.
"I have a much better quality of life here. Life in the UK is much harder," he said.
Ali's latest project is a huge luxury village aimed at British-based Bangladeshis.
The Probashi Palli, or Foreigners' Village, promises to be a "green paradise" of up to 11,000 homes on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka offering non-resident Bangladeshis the opportunity to own a property without having to build it themselves.
A smaller project for Sylhet is also in the pipeline.
The village will be aimed at the older generation who worked hard to establish themselves in their adopted country but now - like Nannu and Ali's parents -- want to spend time close to their roots,
The younger generation, however, is less interested.
"My younger brothers have not even been here," said Nannu, adding that he has even forgotten much of the Bangla language.
"I always knew this was the ancestral village, but Britain is my home," he said
