Jaipur to be showcased as the only tier II city with most 5-star hotels

JAIPUR: The Great India Travel Bazaar (GITB) to be held between April 15-17, 2012 is going to showcase Jaipur as the only tier II city in the country with the largest inventory of five-star hotels. With three more large luxury hotels to launch soon in the city, the total number of five-star rated hotels would touch between 12 - 14 in number.

According to Khalid Khan, former president of Rajasthan Association of Tour operators (RATO), "This year the inaugural dinner would be at The Lalit which is going to announce its arrival in the city in a big way. The hotel would have an inventory of 240 rooms and a large convention centre to accommodate 1,500-2,000 people."

Besides, Radisson Blu that is likely to be ready by July 2012 would be a 180-room hotel and the largest one in the city, Fairmont, is likely to be ready by September 2012 and would be a 365-room property. "Just these three would add about 600-700 room nights to the city's room inventory taking the total number of room nights to 4,000 in the city," said Khalid.

"It's a platform to introduce Fairmont Hotels & Resorts to this market, and provide a luxury option for the meeting and leisure traveller in the region. It's also an opportunity to create business opportunities out of the Great Indian Travel Bazaar, interact with local and foreign buyers, registered Indian sellers, and also to generate awareness for Fairmont Jaipur," writes Fairmont Hotels.

Since this would be comparatively large room inventory with multiple convention options, this would also draw a lot of MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) traffic from other cities to Jaipur. "Tourism is certainly increasing with almost 12-13 per cent and in times to come this would be very good for the buyers as with so much supply and options it would spell a healthy competition," said Khalid.

According to the ministry of tourism GoI, "The number of foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) in India during 2010 increased to 5.78 million as compared to 5.17 million in 2009. The growth rate in FTAs during 2010 over 2009 was 11.8% as compared to (-) 2.2% during 2009 over 2008. The growth rate of 11.8% in 2010 for India was better than World Tourism Organisation UNWTO's projected growth rate of 5% to 6% for the world in 2010."

Global Spa & Wellness Summit (GSWS), an international organisation that brings together leaders and visionaries to shape the future of the global spa and wellness industries, will travel to India next year to hold their seventh edition in Jaipur from October 4-7. It is for the first time that India will be the host country for GSWS. The Ministry of Tourism (MoT), Government of India will be the Titanium partner for the summit. Although MoT had bid for the conference a few months back, the destination and dates were finalised recently. The venue and theme for the summit are, however, yet to be decided.

MoT is expecting around 400 international delegates from over 40 countries to attend this by-invitation-only global summit. The delegates and participants would comprise CEOs and representatives from diverse sectors, such as hospitality, finance, architecture and real estate, medicine, manufacturing, technology, consultancy and other related industries, informed an official from the government. Max Healthcare will do the ground-level facilitation for the conference, the official informed.

In an official release, Susie Ellis, Chairman and CEO, GSWS, said, “It is very significant that we will be meeting in India where the government has taken a worldwide leadership role by identifying wellness and Wellness Tourism as important contributors to a nation’s economy.” Ellis noted that India, as the birthplace of yoga, meditation and Ayurveda, has played a profound role in the development of spa and wellness worldwide, and that this country is an ideal location to explore those historic roots, and, at the same time, address new markets and new revenue opportunities around the globe.

This is the second time after its inception that GSWS is holding its annual summit in Asia. The first Asian country to host the summit was Indonesia, in which Bali was the venue for the fifth annual summit in 2011. After holding the first two summit meetings in New York in 2007 and 2008, GSWS had travelled to Interlaken, Switzerland (2009); Istanbul, Turkey (2010), Bali, Indonesia (2011); and Aspen, Colorado (2012).

Dusit Bird Hotels, the Joint Venture (JV) between Dusit International of Thailand and Bird Group of India, is set to launch their first luxury retreat, Dusit Devarana, New Delhi by end of this year. This urban setting luxury resort, a 50-key property is spread over three hectares with 1000 matured trees and 102-metre long swimming pool. It will house the Dusit Group’s signature Devarana Spa with reflection pools. Among other facilities, the resort will also have two restaurants, bar lounge and library, conference facilities, etc.

Speaking about the debut project of the JV in India, Sunil Mathur, Regional Vice President, Dusit Bird Hotels said that Dusit Devarana will ‘stand out’ not only for its unique architectural designs, but also for its ‘high level of genuine Asian hospitality’. “In a crowded market place like Delhi where there is hardly any ‘differentiator’ in terms of product design or offerings, Dusit Devarana will stand out for its world class design and genuine caring service,” he said. Because of its unique location on National Highway 8, hardly ten minutes drive from the Delhi international airport, the hotel will cater to hi-end luxury travellers as well as corporate clientele, he added.

Followed by Dusit Devarana, the group is expecting to launch its second hotel, Dusit D2, by mid next year. The 200-room Dusit D2 is nearing completion in the aero city in New Delhi. “Even in the aero city, we enjoy a prime location. We are hopeful of launching it towards the middle of 2013,” Mathur said. A business and leisure brand, Dusit D2 has a strong style and design element to address the younger audience, he informed.

Commenting on their growth plans, Mathur said that the group has a ‘planned growth’ strategy in the Indian market. “We are committed to a strong presence in India in the next three to five years. The plan is to establish eight to ten hotels in five years time,” he added.

While the JV company has three properties in the pipeline – Dusit Devarana in Jaipur and Rishikesh, and Dusit Thani in Goa, they would scout for management contracts for all Dusit brands in India. “We are actively pursuing operating contracts across the country. We had negotiations with few owners already,” Mathur said. When asked about the Dusit brands which could drive future growth in India, Mathur said that Dusit D2 and Dusit Princess have lot of scope in Indian conditions. “Dusit Princess is a four-star brand which works beautifully in Tier-I and II cities and can also become part of mix-use development in big cities and emerging metros. The name Princess shows the richness of the brand,” he explained.

France-based Relais & Chateaux, which manages 500 hotels and gourmet restaurants in sixty countries, is planning to add three properties to the existing six in India."The first Indian property that joined Relais & Chateaux was in 2008, and now in 2012, we have a total of six properties in the country and one in Sri Lanka. We hope to ultimately grow the portfolio of the Indian properties in key cities, including Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur in Rajasthan," said Angeline Tang, Director of Sales and Marketing, Relais & Chateaux. The company recognises the potential of the Indian outbound and domestic markets, she said, according to a PTI report.

The Indian travellers, according to Tang, are inclined to luxury, tend to associate it highly with service levels, and expect to be pampered and anticipate recognition of their social status. The Indian luxury travellers take multiple trips throughout the year and also look out for ‘value-for-money’ deals, she notes.

Globally, the company employs approximately 22,000 people in 518 properties in 60 countries. In the Indian sub-continent, including Sri Lanka, it employs around 300 employees in seven properties.

Leela Group hopes a new logo can usher in good luck

NEW DELHI: Satya Rajpurohit, calligrapher and co-founder of Ahmedabad-based design firm Indian Type Foundry, says he arrived at the perfect 'L' — the new monogram logo for the Leela Group — after trying more than 400 strokes over 2-3 weeks. He was assigned the task of redesigning the hospitality group's logo for the first time since its inception in 1986 a few months ago by Paris-based brand consultant Landor Associates.

"Our challenge was to help the Leela transform from 'expensive' to 'worth it'," says Anita Lim, associate client director at Landor Associates, emphasising that she and her team did extensive interviews with luxury travellers and "conducted intense desk search" before deciding on an Indian calligrapher to redesign the logo.

The new logo, with a singular 'L', will be launched over the next few days. "Our whole effort was to help The Leela stand out amid other luxury hotels coming to India," Lim says, adding that maintaining Indianness was key. "We were able to combine both Indian and international tastes for the new logo." For Leela Group chairman Vivek Nair, the new logo means much more — to usher in good luck, as his company looks to follow an assetlight strategy to ride out the bad times after managing to get its lenders to back its corporate debt recast plan.

"The new brand identity is not only a change of sign but a sign of change," he told ET. In addition to owning hotels, the company now plans to manage new properties and build joint ventures for projects at strategic locations such as Agra and Ashtamudi Lake in Kerala, he said.

"We will nearly double our portfolio in the next four years, adding four new luxury hotels and two 'branded Leela residences', to our existing network of eight properties in prime destinations across the country," Nair says.

The Leela opened Chennai's first sea-facing hotel in February. It has upcoming projects in Jaipur, Bangalore, Noida, Agra and Ashtamudi Lake.

Currently, Leela operates eight properties in Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Gurgaon, Goa, Udaipur and Kovalam in Kerala. Nair said the Centre should grant infrastructure status to the hospitality industry because increasing borrowing costs are affecting investments in this highly capital-intensive industry.
