Cambodia needs over $200 million to improve rice mills


AKP Phnom Penh, March 12, 2012 –Cambodia needs over US$200 million capital to improve rice mills, Director General of Rural Development Bank H.E. Sun Kunthor told a delegation of the Export-Import Bank of China during a meeting here recently.

On the occasion, H.E. Sun Kunthor said to improve rice mills, Cambodia needs some US$210 million including US$60 million for long-term investment and other US$150 million for purchasing rice to supply rice mills for processing.

China Development Bank has recently provided US$8 million in loan as initial phase for the Rural Development Bank for the improvement of Cambodian rice sector.

From my point of view, it may be good idea to continue this thread as agriculture is one of four sectors currently driving the economy of Cambodia. I think there are at least four products potentially for importing:

- rice, of course the main one
- rubber tree
- palm oil
- cassava

Additionally, I believe that There are more potential products as the fertile soil with good climate, especially along border line on the mountainous area.
