Natural gas fueling stations considered for Texas interstates

Valero Energy Corp. and natural gas developer Chesapeake Energy Corp. are talking about joining forces to add natural gas fueling stations along major Texas interstates, and they're hoping to get state grants to help.

"It's doable," Jim Greenwood, vice president of government relations for Valero, said during an energy summit this week.

The push to add the fueling stations began with a measure passed by the Legislature last year to reduce emissions in Texas.

As part of the program, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has made $4.5 million in grants available to develop a network of natural gas vehicle fueling stations for a "Clean Transportation Triangle" linking Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio.

There are about 1,000 natural gas refueling stations nationwide, but only three in Houston.

Expect to see them everywhere as new CNG compatible engines for large trucks start rolling out en masse. There's even a home compressor that hooks up to your gas lines for fueling cars!

Great idea but are oil companies really gonna be hip to this? Less $$$ from selling cheaper natural gas.
