Cambodia’s arrivals improve in July
September 10, 2012 by Rapeepat Mantanarat

BANGKOK, 10 September 2012: Tourist statistics in July showed arrivals from Laos to Cambodia almost doubled, while arrivals from Thailand continued to grow at a slower rate.
Cambodia’s Statistics and Tourist Information Department, Ministry of Tourism, reported arrivals from Laos grew 94.9% supplying 24,064 visitors to Cambodia during July. The growth rate has skyrocketed over 70% since January this year.
As for arrivals from Thailand, the numbers increased significantly by 75.8% to 13,538. However, the growth was slower than June when it doubled over 2011.
Over the seven-month period, January to July, arrivals from Thailand and Laos improved 88.8% and 88.5% respectively. They ranked fifth and fourth suppliers to Cambodia’s tourism industry.
Overall, Cambodia recorded 284,282 international visitors in July, improving 18.7% year-on-year. The slower growth in July (increasing over 20% for the first six months) pulled the average growth rate down from 26.8% at the end of June to 25.6% at the end of July. Accumulated arrivals stood at 2,040,862.
Arrivals from the top three suppliers — Vietnam, Korea and China showed improvement in July though not drastically: +24.1%, +11.1% and +23% respectively.
Among the top 10, only Australia in ninth place reported a decline at 6.1% (9,233).
Arrivals from the Philippines grew 50% to 60% since the start-up of the first air link (Cebu Pacific) on the Manila-Siem Reap route 19 April. Growth slowed to 15.7% in July supplying 6,090 visitors.
By region, all markets reported growth except Africa, which represents a very small share. It declined 21.9% to 348 visitors.
Growth from Asia Pacific, accounting for a 78.5% market share, contracted from 33.8% in June to 22.2% in July (223,189). Declines were recorded for Oceanic, -6.3% due to the decrease from two main sullpiers –Australia and New Zealand.
Europe recorded a small increase, 8.5% (41,936) as arrivals from several source countries dropped including the United Kingdom ( -7.1%). Russia grew 44%, while Germany, Netherlands and Switzerland also improved, 24.8%, 25.4% and 20.6% repectively.
The Americas gained 5.3% (18,039) and the Middle East, +19.3% (679).
The surge in trips from neighbouring countries was reflected in a further rise of land arrivals.
Overland travel accounted for 55.5% during July recording 154,519 arrivals, while, 44.5% of the total travelled by air. Phnom Penh International Airport welcomed 60,057 passengers (21.1% share), while Siem Reap International Airport welcomed 66,348 (23.3% share).
Phnom Penh and other provinces welcomed 140,818 tourists, or 49.5% of the total, improving 20.8%. Siem Reap tallied 143,464 tourists with a substantial increase of 16.7% over the same period in 2011.
Trips by Cambodians reached 66,070, a 3.2% rise over the same month last year.

Number of Internet Users More Than Doubled Last Year (How about our forum member?)

The Cambodia Daily
September 25, 2012

The number of Internet users in Cambodia more than doubled last year, but the country still has the third-lowest Internet penetration rate in the region, according to recent statistics released by the World Bank.

Internet users jumped from 178,142 in 2010 to 443,461 in 2011—reaching about 3.1 percent of Cambodia's 14.3 million people. Regionally, however, that number falls far behind other countries such as neighboring Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, which recorded about 566,000,16 million and 31.1 million users last year, respectively, the World Bank said.

Among Southeast Asian nations, only Timor Leste and Burma have a lower Internet penetration rate than Cambodia.

"Prices have dropped over the years and getting Internet from providers in Cambodia is cheap, especially as more and more people use mobile Internet," said Norbert Klein, president of the Internet Society's Cambodia chapter, adding that more locals are logging online to stay connected with family abroad. "In the past, it was complicated to keep in contact with family. Now, it's so easy."

Ezecom, the country's leading Internet provider, said it had seen an increase of at least 20 percent in subscribers last year.

'We at Ezecom are seeing [an] impressive year-on-year growth," said Inge Olde Rikkert, the company's marketing manager. She declined to release Ezecom's subscriber numbers, saving only that a majority of customers are in Phnom Penh.

Cambodia's low Internet penetration rate could be partly attributed to the country's large rural population, the majority of which lack the resources and money to access the Internet.

"There's a big city versus rural gap in Cambodia," said Mr. Klein. "As you move further away from Phnom Penh, communication becomes more difficult and coverage areas become smaller. And the low-coverage areas normally overlap the low-income areas."

In Cambodia, the cheapest home Internet service is about $12 a month. Since 2002, Internet users in Cambodia have increased steadily, with the largest jump before last year being in 2010, when the country saw more than 100,000 people go online.

Tourism in Siem Reap spikes 30 per cent
Monday, 01 October 2012 Rann Reuy

International tourist arrivals in Siem Reap province soared considerably in an eight month period this year compared to previous years, according to an official.

Chhoeuy Chhan, Deputy Director of Siem Reap Provincial Tourism Department, said they in Siem Reap increased by more than 30 per cent.

According to official statistics, foreign tourists arriving totaled more than 1,365,000 in the last eight months, a 30.27 per cent increase compared with more than 1,048,000 the previous year.

Chhoeuy Chhan said at least 85 per cent among these tourists bought tickets to visit the Angkor Wat compound.

He said South Korean tourists, who score highest in the tourist arrivals, increased by 41.06 per cent, from more than 16,000 to over 23,000. Vietnamese tourists came in second, followed by Chinese, Japanese and Thai tourists.

Despite huge increases in numbers, the historical tourism site could still accommodate them because the province has 152 hotels consisting of more than 10,000 rooms, along with 220 guesthouses with more than 3,000 rooms.

“There are not enough rooms during the big national festivals,” he said, but generally there are enough.

There has been an increase in Vietnamese tourists arriving in Cambodia but their benefit is not as great as other foreign tourists, according to a tourism-related service provider.

Seng Phalkun, Managing Director of Travel Loops tour company and owner of Siem Reap-based Noon Night Market, said Vietnamese tourists spent little on souveniers and other service packages.

“Vietnamese are not good for business because their budget is still low," said Seng Phalkun.

“Service packages for Vietnamese are really cheap,” he said. “For example, the cost of a hotel room could be US$30, but for Vietnamese customers, it is $22 per night,” said Seng Phalkun.

On World Tourism Day 2012, Prime Minister Hun Sen said that in 2011 Cambodia received approximately 2.8 million international tourists, an increase of 16 per cent compared with last year.

For the first seven months of 2012, international tourist arrivals to Cambodia totaled about 2 million, an increase of 25 per cent.

growth is a percentage, it means if you increase from

1,000 to 2,000 visitor, it is 100% growth, but
10,000 to 11,000 visitors, it is only 10% growth,

both increase by 1000.

^^ not enough for flights, i calculated it yesterday 127000 (aussies) + 6000 (khmer), but times 0.25 for sydney, divide by 365 = 91.1, per day, an a330 has 350 seats, = < 2 weekly flights

More Russian Tourists Visit Preah Sihanouk Province
Posted Date: Saturday, 13-Apr-2013

The Russian tourists ranked top among the 10 nationalities who visit Preah Sihanouk costal province in the first quarter of 2013.

According to Provincial Tourism Department Director Mr. Seng Kha, the number of national and international tourists visited Preah sihanouk province increased to 353,277 in the first three months of 2013, up 28.39 percent and 30.39 percent respectively if compared with the same period of last year.

Of the 353,277 visitors, 258,413 were local tourists and 94,864 were foreign tourists, he indicated.

British visitors ranked second after the Russians followed by Chinese, American, French, Vietnamese, Australian, German, Canadian and S. Korean tourists, he added.

He further attributed the growing number of tourists to the province to the development of Koh Puos bridge construction invested by Russian investor as well as of commercial, industrial, cultural and tourism sectors.

In 2012, Cambodia welcomed some 3.58 million foreign visitors, up 24.4 percent from 2.88 million in 2011. The number of foreign arrivals in the Kingdom is expected to reach 4.5 million this year.

According to the World Economic Forum, Cambodia ranked 106th among 140 countries in the world in terms of tourism industry and transportation, marking an improvement if compared with 2012 when the country ranked 109th.
