It sounds like he was part of the 'bar-ama-baro' campaign to eradicate illiteracy among rural people/nomads. juzme123 May 8th, 2012, 03:28 PM For UK'ers Documentary about a British Somali model after 18 years away going back to Somalia. I was looking forward to the third episode which is when he travels to Somalia but unfortunately it didn't come on last Sunday. Very interesting nevertheless. Simon also makes it a joy to watch. I was kind of dissappointed at how he approached it all. Apart from South Africa he showed very little of the natural beauty, every day life and natural environment of the places he visited. He focussed to much on talking to individuals and political or pseudo political issues if you ask me rather than exploring and showing the beauty of the places. Overall very dissappointing and the delivery, visual effects/displays, pictures, sound effects were also quite poorly pulled off and he didnt really show anything spectacular or any of the natural beauty. I was edpecting something like the other video that Lailax posted or even something similar to the BBC's other natural world documentaries/series. p.s: yr 8's ? Macalimad aa tahay, Camellete ? Camellete May 9th, 2012, 12:49 AM I agree, he should have showcased the beauty of the countries he was passing through more especially Mozambique, which is a shame. But I think he highlighted the issues well. Madagascar was pretty surprising, they took deforestation to next levels:ohno: And haa I'm a macaaliimad. Waranle May 9th, 2012, 03:17 PM I watched it @ Lailax I cried with her most of the time. Constantine MMX July 23rd, 2012, 10:49 PM ^ Tell me about it bro. I never recovered from the 2010 Ramadan which was brutal as I was working 7 days a week. But this time I have a plan, which is to eat 3 or 4 meals in the time between afur and suxuur, eat slow-burning foods and its working well for me :D LOL, 4 meals, how do you managed that? There is only like 5/6 hours between Afur and Suhur, unless you meant small compact meals full of protein and slow-digesting carbs every hour and a half? Buy a good casein protein shake, it will serve as a good ally in maintaining muscle mass. Xusein July 24th, 2012, 02:58 AM The issue for me is that Ramadan has made it impossible to get my essential caffeine hit in the morning. Suhur here is before 4AM. Waranle July 26th, 2012, 10:31 AM Anyone seen Dark Knight Rises? Apparently its good, but will see it after Ramadan. Ras Siyan July 27th, 2012, 08:22 PM Ramadan kariim Ras, Djibouti must be even more brutal because of the heat. It's really difficult, but that also makes it more challenging. I need to leave the air conditionned office and get on the ground in the city suburbs. The heat (sometimes 47 degrees) and the khamsiin (sand storms that hit southern Djib during July) are just unbearable. Sometimes it's so hot, that I wonder if it's real. How's the air-conditioning business in the country, is it saturated with local companies or is there a potential open market to exploit? Lot's of local companies import aircons, but none of them thinks about energy efficient ones. With the one of the highest electricity bills in Africa, demand for such aircons would surge. Constantine MMX July 28th, 2012, 01:02 AM Importing is just too expensive, you could buy a whole assembly plant from Alibaba.com for less than $500k, have the Chinese company install it in the capital, as well as train the staff. This would enable you to sell the products at a lower price and eventually your company would dominate the market. Most of Somalia's diaspora are in Kenya and Tanzania, most of them speak Swahili fluently already, they probably have children that only speak Swahili instead of Somali. Since peace is coming to Somalia, all those Kenyan-Somalis, Somali-Ugandans, and Somali-Tanzanians will soon return to Somalia speaking what language? SWAHILI. Somalis have easy time learning Swahili anyways. I've met several Somalis who speak Swahili fluently, i used to think all Somalis spoke Swahili, lol. Xusein September 17th, 2012, 04:22 AM Ahhh...forget it. Constantine MMX September 17th, 2012, 04:53 AM How do you feel about that? Nothing to feel about a crack-pot theory that isn't going to be a reality. The Somali language is a rare case of an African language enjoying uncontested dominance in its homeland. Most of Somalia's diaspora are in Kenya and Tanzania There are more 'Somalia born' Somalis in Yemen than in the above two countries, don't confuse the native Somali community in Kenya as being 'diaspora'. They have lived there for centuries, and still speak the Somali language. most of them speak Swahili fluently already, Somalis always spoke fluent Swahili when conducting trade in that part of the world for centuries, even before the Congolese began to speak it. Maybe you need to take a look at the maritime history of Somalia, or the influence of Somali scholars and merchants in East Africa. they probably have children that only speak Swahili instead of Somali. Since peace is coming to Somalia, all those Kenyan-Somalis, Somali-Ugandans, and Somali-Tanzanians will soon return to Somalia speaking what language? SWAHILI. What kind of silly logic is that? Its like saying the more numerous Somalis in the UK and North America will come back and turn Somalia into an English-speaking country, wtf? Somalis have easy time learning Swahili anyways. I've met several Somalis who speak Swahili fluently, i used to think all Somalis spoke Swahili, lol. The average Somali in the diaspora is multi-lingual, just because they adopt one language doesn't mean they threw away their native language. I mean at independence, Somalis spoke Somali, with a few elites here and there speaking English and Italian, and even then Arabic had a wider currency. Swahili will remain a lingua-franca for Somali businessmen based in East Africa, but once they make a phone-call to their trading-links in Somalia, the dominant linguistic vehicle is Somali. In-fact its considered shameful if you're not capable of conversing in your mother-tongue, and the subsequent mockery is a favorite past time amongst Somalis. Though the organisation was indeed originally called the Horn of Africa Relief and Development Organisation, it was commonly known as Horn Relief.* Fatima saw the connection between peace, empowerment and resource protection. The war had destroyed natural resource management systems, jeopardising traditional ways of life. She co-founded the Resource Management Somali Network (RMSN) network, and was instrumental in the ban on the export of charcoal. But she hasn't just changed minds; she's changed the landscape. Through her "rock dam" initiative, communities have learnt to manage rainfall using stone piles, which halt water wastage and create spaces for plants to germinate. One of her greatest achievements has been empowering women and girls to take the lead in peace and conservation. She has helped to secure a constitutional minimum of 30% of government seats for women and fostered a Women's Coalition for Peace in northern Somalia. Under her guidance, youth and elder pastoralists have shared ideas around the use of fragile resources, healthcare and peace. By encouraging change from the bottom up, Fatima has ensured that the capacity for action will outlast her work. mwanamwiwa September 19th, 2012, 02:28 AM hahahaha lol dude you are suffering of inferiority complex, among the Somalis maybe 3% are familiar to the Swahili language, there are Somalis how speak Hindi Chinese,Arabic so your theory make no sense what so ever. So you believe being able to speak Hindi,Chinese,Arabic over Swahili is a good thing? You don't know the meaning of of the terms inferiority complex. mwanamwiwa September 19th, 2012, 02:29 AM What’s wrong with Swahili? My mother can speak it fluently  Constantine MMX September 19th, 2012, 03:17 AM So you believe being able to speak Hindi,Chinese,Arabic over Swahili is a good thing? You don't know the meaning of of the terms inferiority complex. Don't twist his words, the point he made was very clear; just because a percentage of Somalis can speak a certain language doesn't mean it will end up the second language of an entire country. The Maay language is recognised as the second most widespread language in Somalia, the fact that we have African King salivating at the possibility that this second language could be displaced by employing 'crack-pot' theories, seems pretty shady to me. Swahili in of itself was influenced for centuries by the Somali language, especially the local Swahili languages in Somalia, which in turn through the Bajunis (Katwa) and others influenced groups further down the coast, so there is a long historic connection, its not really 'foreign' to Somalia, the way A.K made it out to be.
