View Full Version : Nigeria’s first ever wind propelled electricity plant project to be launched in july
dan katsina April 12th, 2012, 04:23 PM 10mw is not much but any progress is good especially alternative energy sources
Nigeria’s first ever wind propelled electricity plant project is due for inauguration in July and will add 10 megawatts to the national grid, the Minister of State for Power, Mr. Darius Ishaku, has said.
Ishaku said this when a two-man delegation from the Kastina State Government paid him a courtesy visit, according to a statement made available to our correspondent by an Assistant Director in the ministry, Ms Patricia Deworitshe.
The delegation, which comprised the Commissioner for Water Resources, Mr. Jamilu Musa, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Higher Education, Dr. Garba Matazu, was in Abuja to seek an end to power outages in the state.
Ishaku told the delegation that the wind power project located in Katsina and funded by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency was expected to contribute 10MW to the national grid.
He added that another 0.8MW from a solar energy project would be transmitted directly to the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University, Kastina to serve the school community.
The minister advised state governments to woo private investors to participate in the provision of electricity as the Federal Government was willing to encourage public-private partnership in electricity provision.
He noted that the Zobe, Sapke and Jibia dams in Katsina State would provide electricity for the people of the state and neighbouring states, as well as improve their socio-economic status when fully utilised.
Ishaku said the feasibility reports for the Zobe and Jibia dams had been completed and submitted to the government.
He informed the visitors that the Kurfi, Kankara and Malumfashi sub-stations, and the Daura lines had been re-awarded to improve the voltage in Kastina and Kano states as well as ensure their speedy completion.
Ishaku said the Federal Government was making efforts to provide lasting solutions to the challenges in the power sector.
He stressed that the current problem of electricity outages was caused by the shutdown of the Kainji hydro power plant due to flood and under performance of the turbines at the Shiroro hydro power station due largely to low water level in the last few weeks.
He promised to call for a meeting of the chief executive officers of the electricity firms in charge of the zone on how to improve on power supply to the area.
Ishaku also advised electricity consumers to pay their bills promptly as paucity of funds would affect electricity distribution by the distribution companies, which also needed funds to pay for the gas received from the generating companies.

Tbite April 13th, 2012, 04:16 AM Nigeria doesn't have much wind capacity...but they should still build as many of these as they can..if it is viable....and the costs add up
It might only be a little bit of electricity but it can be quite useful for operating some infrastructure or businesses.
Wind energy is one of Nigeria's lowest energy potentials, so although this is laudable I am yearning to see more investments in the higher yielding areas like Coal etc
Arinze April 13th, 2012, 04:26 AM Coal is a pollutant, with the disaster in the Delta do you want to trust the Nigerian govt. to properly disposing coal waste? Naija Chernobyl...
:laugh::laugh::laugh:
This is Naija, we need pictures. God knows how many projects have had huge fanfare (shameless politicians even do ribbon cutting ceremony:banana:) even updates only to find out that it never left the paper it was written on
But it would be a good thing for the north which has more leveled/flatter ground to have turbines set up there. It would provide jobs.
Tbite April 13th, 2012, 04:52 AM Pollutant? Ke?
Some of the world's largest economy use coal energy.
Most of Australia's energy comes from coal..the energy I am using to visit this forum is from coal.
South Africa....coal
China coal
If it will reduce poverty and improve Nigeria..I could not care less about that Al Gore nonsense.. Coal is a MUST. It actually produces real energy....not this 5 Megawatts...300 Megawatts nonsense.
A single coal power plant in South Africa produces more than Nigeria's national grid.
AND BTW Nigeria's coal...is one of the cleanest in the world...All our fossil fuels are cleaner than most in the world...our coal is cleaner..our Oil is cleaner and our gas is cleaner...so if other countries use coal..then Nigeria has even more right to use coal..since our coal will have even less emissions.
and the Waste coal will likewise be cleaner in Nigeria than in other countries

The Minister of State for Power, Hajiya Zainab Kuchi, has assured that the 10 megawatts Windmill Power Project in Katsina State will be completed in June to boost power supply in the country.
Kuchi gave the assurance on Monday when she paid an inspection visit to the project site in Rimi Local Government Area of the state.
She expressed delight over the level of work done at the site, saying that government would ensure that the contractor finished the work within the time frame.
Kuchi said that power supply was one of the top priorities of the present administration because of its role in socioeconomic development of the country.
She commended the state government for supporting the project, particularly for settling the N400 million land compensation of the site.
The minister also urged the local community to safeguard the project in their area for its sustainability.
Earlier, the Project Consultant, Mr Jonathan Okoronkwo, had told the minister that the project had been stalled for some months following the kidnap of one of the consultants in 2012.
He said that vandals had destroyed some facilities, while rodents damaged some cables, but had already been reinstalled.
Okoronkwo said that one of the two 7.5 MV transformers which was defective had also been replaced.
According to him, they have also completed construction of substations for the distribution of the electricity to users.
He explained that the project was easier to maintain and more suitable for Nigerian situation.
Also, in his remarks, Governor Ibrahim Shema urged the Federal Government to hasten completion of the project for the overall socioeconomic development of the state.
Shema, represented by his deputy, Abdullahi Faskari, also urged the government to complete the 135 KVA transmitting station for Daura Zone to boost electricity supply in the area.

The North has potential for renewable energy, currently there are 3 solar power plants under construction with a combined capacity of around 140MW with this wind mill making it 150MW of renewable energy

The north and much of Nigeria has the capacity and the potential to utilize solar and other renewable energies to the max. Especially wind as solar is not very efficient.
Yet, look at your post above, they are busy kidnapping the engineers that have come to assist them develop.
Does that make any sense?
Tbite May 14th, 2013, 05:56 AM I saw a wind turbine project a couple of years ago somewhere in Nigeria, I thought what you were going to post would be like what I saw...but this is much better. A lot better than what I saw.
