This thread is especially for the projects and plans pertaining to Vadakara and Vadakara only. You can come forward and discuss the immense possibilities of this small sleepy town. Come on let us make it happen.

Vadakara, the costal Municipality in the northern border of Kozhikode district is in its initial stages of growth.
My main intention to start a thread for the town in this forum is not just to showcase the town, but to prepare a stage for the town to understand its shortcomings, to view the flaws in the basic infrastructure and to discuss about the changes that has to be made to prepare for a better tomorrow in the times of rapid urbanisation.
I would like you all to actively participate in discussions by contributing your views in identifying the problems and suggesting solutions from the perspective of a town planner. By doing so, we can put forward a general guideline, for the people who have the power to materialise those ideas into action.
This forum also aims to highlight many of the projects already proposed for the area, by various agencies, organisations and personnel researches there by providing a consolidated view of ideas on a common platform.
Once the areas of basic infrastructure, transportation facilities and the availability of essential manpower and resources are properly addressed, I am sure the town will be ready to receive its share of other urban features to make the life of its people more comfortable.

Sanju,
I appreciate your concern....about the thread being in the inappropriate place. And your self proclaimed authority in the site to ask the mods about moving it. But I don't think you were justified enough to ask about the maturity (as in your words... Even that's a wrong usage as I think) of the town. If this platform is meant to discuss about the development plans of a town... there no way, a town like Vadakara can be ignored.

This thread is a much needed one inside Kozhikode sub forum. Vatakara is one of the oldest municipality in Kerala established on 1958, now having a population of 78000.

Vatakara is a place which have immense potential , but was least considered by politicians or authorities, and have the fate to hide in the shadow of the growth of Kozhikode city and Thalassey-Kannur.

It is the the market , one farmer will get the highest market rate for Copra(Dried coconut) in this country, because of the quality of the Kuttiady breed of Coconut, which is cultivated in this region.

There will be more happening municipalities, but Considering the amount of trade of Coconut,Oils, arecanut and agricultural - fisheries products and other business activities, Vadakara will be easily finding a place in the list of 10 biggest municipalities in Kerala. And all other bigger towns already have its own thread as they are district head qrts !

I believe, still Vatakara is the 11th largest city/town in Kerala considering the size of business establishments. (People passing through Vatakara will see only the Bye-pass NH)

Dear friend, i am not arguing about the importance of Vadakara, for a forum like Skyscrapercity we need solid projects to survive, or else the thread might go dead after a few posts, what i feel is that even Kozhikode forum itself is not that active these days which it used to be before due to the lack of photo updates, so what can we expect from a separate thread for Vadakara?

About the self proclaimed authority...:nuts:any forumer in this forum can request mods for any kind of action needed in this forum, thats it, its the mods who decide what should be done, whether to consider our request or to ignore it, so you, me or any other forumer have the right to request mods for any action, we have a separate 'Forum complaints and suggestion' thread for this.

As a populated town with its ever expanding Horizons, the major problem that the town facing today is the shortage of fresh water. Only a town with ample water supply and good network of supply pipelines will house a satisfied population.

Vatakara is one of the worst water deficient town in south India, mainly because of its proximity with the sea. Wells in coastal areas are salty. The fresh water supply system prevailing is very old and insufficient to support the population.

The new signs are promising as the Municipality has initiated a 21 Crore project under Urban Infrastructure Development of Small and Medium Towns, a Centre-funded programme.

Alternate views to overcome this problem are welcome in this forum.

The News (http://www.hindu.com/2008/04/08/stories/2008040853340300.htm) is a good pointer.

Passport Seva Kendra, The as good Passport Office was a first of its kind to the town. With a large part of population of NRIs it was indeed a much needed one. But again the lack of proper planning and vision resulted in a signature building with insufficient parking space. The picture says it all.

The road was a blessing for the people of vadakara as it served as parking lots, which otherwise are absent in the town. This is another area of concern. Parking spaces are a must to any urban habitat. Otherwise our narrow roads will serve the purpose hindering the traffic.

Actually I was expecting valuable inputs from our forum friends and experts on this matter. Since I received nil comments, let me put it once again.

How about small coastal towns implementing desalination plants to over come water scarcity. I have read somewhere that kasargod taluk has some plans on this.

Hindu news (http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Thiruvananthapuram/article2993910.ece) is a good indicator.

Fund for the plant can be made available through Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small & Medium towns (UIDSSMT)

At present we are only using those natural resources of fresh water. Its a fact that those are not being utilised to its full extent. But since our rivers (of subcontinent) are not perennial, and flow through a relative flat landscape after leaving the western ghats, there is a tendency of river water getting salinated with the back flow of sea water during changing tides.

Thats the reason, major fresh water pumping stations are situated far inland from sea coastline and in the case of Vatakara, its in Gulikapuzha. Again the cost and technology required to carry that amount of water from the pumping site to the town is expensive.

Vadakara has numerous big and small ponds in its vicinity, majority of which is in a bad state due to negligence and poor maintenance. Instead of going for a single project to cater for the need of whole town, small subsections of water distribution utilising these old man made water bodies can be considered as a standby arrangement.

Serving as a one way road, This one connecting Edodi Junction with NH Byepass near new bus stand is comfortable. But since there is no parallel road to traverse west, this road has to be developed as a medianed two way road. Since most of the buildings are under constructional phase, with strict guidelines and norms municipality can do this.

Private agencies to be roped in

The Vadakara Municipality is planning to team up with various private agencies in the region to take up a comprehensive source-level waste treatment scheme with the support of residents and industrial units. A special fund will be earmarked to support the scheme, which will strive to promote the decentralised waste treatment initiatives.

Vadakara municipal chairperson P.P. Ranjini said the project, now being piloted in some houses in the region, would initially enlist the services of two private agencies. Priority would be given to set up biogas plants or vermicompost units in households as part of the source-level waste treatment drive,” she added.

Sources said the municipality had decided to invest funds on the project in the current financial year as other alternatives, including centralised waste recycling system, suggested by various outside agencies were found unfeasible owing to the lack of a treatment yard. The initial plan to implement a waste recycling model implemented by the Mysore Corporation too was dropped as the municipality found it difficult to identify a larger dumping yard owing to protests.

“The method followed in Mysore was very inventive to address the waste recycling issues, but our municipality could not identify a vast area of land for testing the organic method,” said Ms. Ranjini. She claimed the climate in Mysore was favourable for them to successfully implement the project there.

As per the latest plan, any private agencies interested in setting up domestic biogas plants or vermicompost units would be given permission to undertake the construction. Households willing to take the services of such approved agencies would be given special subsidy to set up the suitable units.

In addition to the decentralised waste treatment plan, the municipality would also undertake a separate project to develop its existing drainage system to make the town premises more clean and hygienic. According to the municipal chairperson, the project would be implemented after conducting a field study with the support of experts in the field. “The project implemented with the support of the State government fund would be completed within a five-year term,” she added.

The much-awaited Vadakara police package, which has been in cold storage for more than a year, it seems, is awaiting clearance of the Home and the Finance Departments

These departments have been ignoring the needs of the Kozhikode Rural Police District for effectively dealing with the law and order problems even after the repercussions of the murder of Revolutionary Marxist Party leader T.P. Chandrasekharan on May 4.

The Home Department has agreed in principle to the proposal but the Finance Department has expressed its reluctance to agree to the package that entails considerable funding, senior government functionaries told The Hindu here on Thursday.

Rioting

Latest crime statistics reveal the situation is pretty grim. The number of rioting cases in the past six months is 444; simple hurt, 491; grievously hurt, 29; murder, 4; attempt to murder, 13; arms and explosives, 80; kidnapping, 9; and rash and drunk driving, 526.

Some of these rioting incidents occurred after the murder of Chandrasekharan. Significantly, 893 cases of riots and 165 arms and explosive cases were reported last year, making the figures the highest in the any police district in the State.

Officials said a major proposal was to carve out a new subdivision at Kuttiyadi for competent policing of Kuttiyadi, Nadapuram, and Perambra regions.

The existing subdivisions were at Thamarassery and Vadakara, for maintaining law and order in the hilly regions and coastal areas respectively. Similarly, four police stations each were mooted in the Vadakara, Koyilandy, Balussery, and Thamarassery circles.

The existing strength of the police force in Kozhikode Rural, one of the most sensitive police districts in the State, is 1,236 at 21 police stations. The six Deputy Superintendent of Police are most of the time engaged in special investigation duties.

The working strength of the department is that of 1998. “We somehow manage with the force drawn from the Armed Reserve Camp and a 90-member company from the Additional Director General of Police (North Zone),” an officer said.

Recently, the Home Department sanctioned eight specialised vehicles for mobile patrolling attached to the newly started Nadapuram control room after the political and communal clashes at the Nadapuram and Kuttiyadi regions a year ago.

But these patrols operate without sufficient manpower. “The department needs 30 sub-inspectors, 30 drivers, 30 senior civil officers, and 150 policemen for the job round-the-clock. Now an assistant sub-inspector is usually deputed from local stations. New recruits could be drawn from the battalions,” he said.

Officials said the control room at Vadakara was not functioning properly on account of shortage of staff. “Vadakara is in close proximity to some of the distributed areas, including Onchiyam and Mahe. Criminals infiltrating from Kannur district is also not so uncommon,” an officer said.

There were times when one will not find a single auto rickshaw at Vadakara Railway station even in the broad day light. Not connected with the public road transport system, the only means of transport here in the station are auto rickshaws, which points to one of the major concerns of the train users of the town. Approach roads to the railway station should be widened and the buses are to be routed through the railway station.

The newly inducted, time tested system of pre-paid auto rickshaws has made some difference....

With the traders' protest against the government move to acquire land to widen NH 66, the people's representatives and social organizations are planning to sit together to plan an alternative — an elevated highway — on August 8. The meeting will be attended by Vadakara MP Mullappally Ramachandran and C K Nanu, MLA.

Meanwhile, the traders have alleged that the BOT road would ultimately be detrimental to commuters and people who surrender their land.

They also say the 45m-wide road will divide the town into two. Prakash Kumaran P, chairman of Building and Land Owners Forum, said the traders have already given their land for widening works to make the road 30m-wide.

"The fresh move will affect more than 500 traders in town and the project will also adversely affect the smooth traffic flow here," he said.

They alleged that the land mafia is behind the campaign in support of BOT road project. "The campaign by a group of people who support the project for the compensation package announced by advisory committee appointed by the chief minister is baseless," Prakash said.

"Inadequate compensation and the lack of a proper rehabilitation package are responsible for people unwilling to surrender their land for road development projects," said Pradeep Chombala, a member of NH action committee.

He said the elevated highway will resolve the issues related to the widening of highways and traffic congestion in the town.

Now, as a hydrographer, I see a potential seaport in this geogrpahical pattern. Love for my own land also catalised the process. Expecting a volley of criticism from our thinktanks, let me introduce the concept of 'Port of Kadathanad'

A seaport is the major factor which contributes to the development of a town. Open roadsteds, in the flat Malabar coast is an easy catch and the geography easily facilitates the cause. This is where the possibility of setting up a sheltered seaport in the mouth of Murat river has its significance. By utilising its natural formed inland bays and coves the project will be economical too. The sea bed in the area is relatively soft comprising of fine sand mud and broken corals. The topology of the near shore also agrees as it is gently shelving and free from dangerous rocks and corals.

GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA
MARINE WING
GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION OFF BADAGARA, KERALA
FS:2006-2007
CGM-MW/SD/2006/208)
Thomas Mathai, M. Suresh Chandran, M.R. Asoka kumar, Satish Kumar, K.N.
Rajarama, P.C. Das, G.K.Dutta, A.K.Ghosh and T.K. Banerjee
Geological, geotechnical and geophysical surveys off Badagara, Kerala were carried
out during Cruise SD-208, by Operation West Coast II of the Marine Wing, as part of its
annual Field Season Programme (2006-07) in keeping with the Indian Government's
policy of developing and upgrading small ports and harbours along west and east coasts
of India. Covering an area of 135 sq km (bounded by Latitudes: 11° 30'N and 11° 37'N
and Longitudes: 75° 26'E and 75° 35.5'E) off Badagara on the Kerala coast, the surveys
were carried out from 16th December 2006 to 7th January 2007
Bathymetric surveys covering a total of 391 line km recorded depths between a
maximum of 30.8m and a minimum of ' 2.17m depths which helped to generate a high
density of bathymetric data. The isobaths prepared at 1 m intervals are \without much
inflections and almost parallel each other A smooth and gentle seafloor sloping towards
West is delineated The profile section shows the gradient of around 1 in 570. Comparison
v of the hydrographic charts of last thirty five years with the present bathymetric map
reveals a more or less uniform and broad based erosion of the seabed in the nearshore
area by almost a metre
Surface sediment distribution in the nearshore, beyond the thin sandy strip along the
coast, represents a milieu of sand, silt and clay with variants ranging from silty clay,
sand-silt-clay, sand, silty sand, sandy silt and clayey silt - typical of a fluvial outflow
sector. The nearshore sediment milieu off the wide Murat lagoon implies a river mouth
shifting in both time and space In almost a complete contrast to the near shore, deeper
areas comprise silty clay at surface level followed by Clayey silt and silt. About six
textural variants based on the relative percentages of sand, silt and clay have been
identified on the basis of size analysis. It is to be stressed that though the textural
variataion is evident, the differentiation is only marginal based on a slight variation in the
size grades Sedimentological parameters point to the mixed nature of the sediments and
pronounced bimodality thereby indicating different provenances and modes of
deposition. In the sub-surface level the dominant sediment type is Silty clay, followed by
lesser amounts of Silty sand, Sand-silt-clay, Sandy silt, Sand and Clayey silt. In general
the sediment type off Badagara suggests fluvio-marine interactive depositional regime
where the coarse fluvial sediment debouches onto a finer marine sediment milieu giving
rise to an assortment of mixed sediment types with marginal variations between sand, silt
and clay. Based on data obtained for the sediment column, bucket/agitation dredging
involving minimum capital expenditure can be planned during initial dredging of the
navigational channel while developing the port
Nearshore core samples mainly composed of silty clay with intercalations of silt and
sand were subjected to determination of Mass physical properties: Water content (32-
144%) with higher percentages is attributable to clayey zones. Wet unit weight has a
restrictive range (1.30 to 1.83) and relate to clay content with relatively lower values
representing clayey zones. Specific gravity of the sediments range from 2.63 to 2.79 and
are unaffected by varying sediment content Void ratio and Porosity values commensurate
with water content and specific gravity Shear strength values registered between 17.4 kPa
and 1.6 kPa are high for silty/sandy zones and low for clayey zones where shear
resistance is minimum implying litho-control. Atterberg Limits and Indices were
determined for the clayey sediments. Liquid limit between 80 to 150% are rather high
while Plastic Limit between 10 to 62% tend to be low to moderate. Plasticity Index
values (70 to 93%) show a very high degree of plasticity. Liquidity Indices from 0.11 to
1.07 indicate a slightly stiff to soft state of consistency for the clay and would not tend to
flow when subject to any disturbances
Gravity cores from the deeper area comprise almost entirely of silty clay and
geotechnical parameters were therefore perceptibly different from the sand-silt
intercalated nearshore sediments described earlier. Water contents varies from 25% for
sandy sediments to 246% for clayey sediments, averaging at about 117%. Wet unit
weight varies from 1.17 to 1 88 Mg/m3 and averages at 1.41 Mg/m3. Specific gravity
variations are within a restricted range between 2.47 and 2.83. Void ratio and Porosity
range between 0.7 and 6.74 and 41.25 and 87.08% respectively Liquid limit varies from
47 to 183% and Plastic limit from 28 to 95%. Plasticity index values vary from 19 to
125% and liquidity indices from 0.16 and 2.62. Undrained shear strength was registered
for majority of the samples and falls between 0.5 to 17.6 kPa. Remoulded samples failed
to register any values for undrained shear strength. Based on Burmister classification,
Plasticity index values for a majority of the samples indicate a very high degree of
overall plasticity. Liquidity indices indicate sediments to have soft to liquid state of
consistency. In the Plasticity chart, majority of plots fall below the A-line indicating that
the samples as dominantly clays with admixtures of organic matter or silty in nature. As
per Mitchell's classification, liquid and plastic limit values suggest that the majority of
samples dominantly consist of montmorillonite with subordinate amounts of illite.
Activity values between 0.96 and 3.92, based on the classification of clay after Skempton
(1953), show that majority of the core sub samples fall in the active field.
Shallow seismic survey was carried out along 12 coast normal and one coast parallel
transects covering a total of 184 line km in water depths ranging between 68m and 31.9m
The seismic records indicate a smooth seafloor with a gentle gradient. The reflector R1
appears to be a compact surface overlain by loose clay with a thickness varying from 2m
in near shore to about 3.2m in the deeper area. The reflector R2 is the deepest acoustic
surface recorded in the survey area. The compact layer between reflectors R1 and R2,
probably a sandy unit, varies in thickness from 6.7m in near shore to about 10m in deeper
areas. Hard rocky basement or random outcrops are not present in the proposed
navigational channel alignment The survey has generated data that give positive
indications for developing a port in this sector Side scan sonar survey was carried out
along 14 shore parallel transects at an interval of about 250m in the nearshore areas for a
total of 121 line kms. The scan records show a monotonous and featureless seafloor and
fails to pick out any hazardous zones. The seafloor in the proposed navigational sector is
blanketed by soft sediments which proves to be quite positive for proposing a
navigational channel alignment in this sector.
Current observations carried out at about 3m below the sea level at stations CM-1, CM-
2 and CM-3 were located to the south, exactly off and to the northwest of the river
outflow respectively Current direction at CM-1 (depth-5.51 m) is dominantly northerly
with subordinate northeasterly and southeasterly directions; current velocities range
between 14 to 36 cms/sec averaging at 27.5 cms/sec At CM-2 (depth-548m), the current
direction was dominantly between north and west- northwest with occasional southsoutheasterly
directions Current velocities varied between 18 to 39 cms/sec average at
303cms/sec Northerly current directions dominate at CM-3 (depth-7.72m) with velocities
ranging from 19 to 41 cms/sec, averaging 30 cms/sec Current directions reversed during
the evening low tide period at CM-1 and CM-2 and are apparently affected by fluvial
outflow currents from Murat bay Since station CM-3 located further offshore, it is not
affected by tidal variations as evidenced by the unidirectional northerly currents. Current
velocities at all stations are independent of tidal fluctuations
Environmental parameters like Temperature, pH, Salinity, Conductivity and Dissolved
Oxygen were studied at eleven locations at two depths (1 m below sea level and at 1 m
above seafloor). Temperature of sea water at surface levels range from 27.4 to 29.3°C
averaging 28.28°C, more or less similar with bottom temperatures ranging from 27.2 to
29°C, averaging 28.17°C pH values are the same for the top and bottom levels between
7.5 to 7.6 and averaging at 753. No perceptible variation in salinity for the two levels
could be detected as values average 34.49 for the top and 34.58 for the bottom levels.
Conductivity is also almost similar at an average of 5214 mS/cm for the top and 52.26
mS/cm for the bottom levels Dissolved Oxygen averaging at 7.34 mg/l for upper and 7.37
mg/l for the bottom are very closely comparable Thus, the environmental parameters are
more or less identical for top and bottom levels and in general compare well with the
standard values for unpolluted sea water
Preliminary surveys indicate that Badagara area has immense potential for an
economically viable development into a minor port. Deepening of the fluvial channel
way by dredging the soft sediments is possible with minimum capital expenditure. The
proposed navigational channel in the near shore is in a hazard free zone and can easily be
excavated in the soft clayey/silty sediments through agitation/bucket dredging The
sparsely populated hinterland gives much scope for future expansion and developm

Police to review crime situation in Malabar

Home Minister chairs meeting at Iringal today

Top police officers will meet at the Kerala Arts and Crafts Village at Iringal, near Vadakara, on Monday to review the law-and-order situation in north Kerala.

The high-level meeting to be chaired by Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan will be attended by State Police Chief K.S. Balasubramanian; Additional Directors General of Police N. Shanker Reddy (North Zone), T.P. Senkumar (Intelligence), P. Chandrashekaran (Administration), Vinson M. Paul (Crimes) and Inspectors General of Police Jose George (Kannur Range) and S. Gopinath (Thrissur Range).

This apart, Superintendents of Police in Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode Rural, Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad Rural, Thrissur Rural, State Special Branch and Crime Branch, Commissioners of Police of Kozhikode and Thrissur and Sub-Divisional Officers in all these police districts will take part in the meeting.

Highly placed sources told The Hindu here on Sunday that the meeting would examine threadbare the crime situation in north Kerala in the wake of Intelligence reports that basic policing operations needed to be drastically improved in the region.

A HOST OF ISSUES

The communal situation in Kasaragod district, political unrest in Kannur district and rioting in rural areas of Kozhikode district, moral policing and subversive activities of fundamentalist groups were cited as some vexing problems.

Studies carried out by the department reveal that the coastal belts of Kasaragod district are a “potential volcano” for communal tensions, and large-scale riots are possible anywhere along the labyrinthine roads and by-lanes along the beaches.

TROUBLE SPOTS

As many as 1,000 of the 1,113 incidents reported in the district in the past decade have been in the area from the National Highway No 17 to the beach ranging in a distance of 4 km to 25 km at different locations.

Kumbla, Kasaragod, Badiaduka, Adhur, Hosdurg and Bekal are some of the troubled spots.

The police had a tough time controlling rioters, at times numbering up to 1,000, on different occasions.

VADAKARA PACKAGE

The meeting will also discuss the proposed Vadakara police package for effectively dealing with law-and-order problems in rural areas of Kozhikode district.

The proposals include creating a new sub-division at Kuttiyadi and four police stations under the Vadakara, Koyilandy, Balussery, and Thamarassery circles.

The working strength of the Police Department in the region (1,236 personnel at 21 police stations) is that of 1998.

The sources said that another agenda of the meeting would be reopening of some politically motivated murder cases in Kannur district, in the light of the revelations made by T.K. Rajeesh, prime accused in the murder of Revolutionary Marxist Party leader T.P. Chandrasekharan, that some of the accused charge-sheeted in these cases were scapegoats.

These cases included the killing of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha State vice-president K.T. Jayakrishnan in a classroom at the East Mokeri U.P. School, Kannur, on December 1, 1999; the Sooraj murder case at Muzhuppalangad in 2005; and cases related to the death of Kuniyil Suresh Babu in 2008, and V. Vinayan at Champad Panur in 2009.

The issue comes close on the heels of the State government ordering further investigation into the murder of a Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh leader C.T. Manoj, alias Choriyanchalil Manoj, at Payyoli this February.

Wide encroachment of Chovva river, a backwater tributary of Kuttiyadi river raises serious concerns about the existence of the water body. Rich with its fish species and scenic beauty, the river has immense potential to get converted as a favorite tourist sport, if planned and executed properly. Finally the Maniyoor Panchayat is moving some files to make it happen.

Besides the verbal gimmicks of our politicians to make the place a tourist destination, the only hope is about the Naval museum, for which we now have a defense minister who is willing to help and a minister cum MP who is bound to work. Fingers crossed.

KOZHIKODE: The protest against the widening of the national highway (NH-66) in Vadakara is getting stronger by the day with political parties and more social organizations joining the protesters, who include traders' organizations.

The NH action council, which is protesting against the proposal to widen and maintain the road on a BOT basis, allege that the road would prove detrimental to commuters and people who surrender their land. The proposed 45-metre-wide road would divide Vadakara town into two separate portions, it says. On Friday, activists of the Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) and the Edathupaksha Ekopana Samithi joined the protest against the survey being undertaken at Chorode for widening the NH. Though the survey team had been provided police protection, it returned without completing its job.

RMP activists took out a march to the office of the tahsildar (land accusation) Vatakara. They also staged a dharna in front of the office. Party area secretary N Venu inaugurated the march. Edathupaksha Ekopana Samithi leaders N Hariharan and K P Prakashan also attended the protest programme.

Action council activists blocked the survey at Nadapuram Road, saying a CBI inquiry was going on against corruption related to the alignment of the revised route of NH-66. Pradeep Chombala, member, action council, said the agitation would be strengthened in the coming days. "As more political parties are extending support to us, we expect to make the protest a success," he said.

With the protest gaining momentum, people's representatives are now discussing the feasibility of constructing an 'elevated highway' across the town as an alternative to widening it. But the idea hasn't found many takers as yet. The Inadequate monetary compensation and the lack of a proper rehabilitation package are the main reasons why people are unwilling to surrender their land, said Pradeep Chombala.

It is wrong argument. There are many vehicle underpasses according to the DPR of Kannur-Vengalam NH. Those are for roads cutting across the NH. The only two grade-separator flyovers between Kannur and Vengalam is near Vadakara. One is for Nadapuram road jn. And the other one is in Vadakara town. I believe it is for the road towards Perambra.

Please provide the link for the DPR you were mentioning. I just want to have a look at it. As far as I know, the NH is not elevated at nadapuram Road, and its not a junction as you say. I dont think the action council is so dump to be ignorant about the fly over you were talking about.

All such anti-development action councils are basically dumb or twists facts with some vested interest. Their worry is about 45 m width which is going to be acquired. Whether fly over comes or not the width acquired will be 45 m only. Flyover is for grade separation. Here their demand is to build an elevated highway to avoid further land acquisition. I am not bothered whether it happens or not. But what they mentioned is once BOT road comes there will be only four places to cross the road in Kozhikode district. This is absurd statement similar to the argument against Express Highway. You can go to Chalakudy and see how they built grade separator flyovers in the middle of the town. There will be similar ones here also. We have many SHs and District Roads originating or cutting across the highway. There will be "18 nos. underpasses, 2 nos. flyovers and one overpass" between Valapattanam and Vengalam according to the DPR.

Sorry about mentioning it as Nadapuram road. I meant the road junction towards Nadapuram and not the place named Nadapuram road to Nadapuram road Rly station. There are two flyovers near Vadakara according to DPR. I am not sure whether the contractor is going to build them or not as I am not the authority to make them do so. But according to the DPR there will be a flyover 1.2 km north of Chorode ROB and another one 3 km south of Chorode ROB.

DPR was available in NHAI website earlier. Now the link is broken http://www.nhai.org/Project%20Report%20Kannur%20Vengalam%20NH%2017%20Pkg%20I.zip I have the files with me if you want. Its not an anti development movement. Its more pro humane....

As for the underpasses you mentioned, with 12 m width and 5 m vertical clearance, they will be nothing more than jam creators with the kind of vehicular density on the Vadakara - Villyapalli road. Besides that we will loss the link of the newly constructed Lokanarkavu road.

As you mentioned, if we have a grade separator fly over for the road to Perambra, thats good, but that should not be mixed with the demand of an elevated highway throughout the length of the town. Both have different purposes.

Areas on the west of national highway could not boast a well connected network of roads. This move to connect the fishing villages north of Vadakara, from Poozhithala in Mahe to Kuriyadi near Chorode can be considered as the first step.

This can further be extended to railway station and then to Iringal. The approach road to the proposed minor port also will go through this area, starting from Chorode.

Now demand from various quarters regarding, giving a permanent place somewhere more convenient for the 'Oushadha Chanda' is on the rise.

The road was a blessing for the people of vadakara as it served as parking lots, which otherwise are absent in the town. This is another area of concern. Parking spaces are a must to any urban habitat. Otherwise our narrow roads will serve the purpose hindering the traffic.

The Onchiyam struggle lives on
May 13, 2012 DC Kochi

The little hamlet of Onchiyam in Badagara which had a crucial role in the building of the communist movement in the state has become the nemesis of the CPI (M) today.

During World War II there was a growing movement against food scarcity coupled with the struggle for land for the tillers and that against the British rule. The Communist Party then was against the war stating that the British had no right to push India into the war.

Local party meetings to explain the party stand and devise strategies for the struggle had a secretive nature as the Malabar special police were out to hound the leaders and cadre.

On April 30, 1943, an MSP team descended on Onchiyam in search of two leaders P.P. Sankaran and P.R. Nambiar who had attended a party meeting there. The team went to the house of Choyi and asked if the leaders were there. Not finding them there, the team arrested Choyi and his son and made a big announcement in the village that the two had been arrested.

Locals led by party activist Alavakkal Krishnan requested the police to release Choyi and his son promising to produce them when demanded. The police conceded and the crowd went back with the two. Police soon opened fire and eight people, including Krishnan, were killed instantaneously and the two injured were taken to hospital.

At the spot where they were buried, the party erected a memorial, one amongst the earliest memorials of the communist movement.

The martyrdom helped spread the movement whose tradition was kept live by T.P. Chandrasekharan and his ilk.

As one of the busy roads connecting Vadakara and Kuttiyadi, the level crossing at Kainatty was a cause of concern at the Vatakara-Thottilpalam-Manathaody proposed SH. The proxoimity of kainatty Junction near the level cross made things worse as the traffic waiting line invaded the NH (Kochi- panvel) also. Finally the long cherished dream began to materialise. A ROB at Kainatty. The work on both sides of the rail has completed and awaiting the Railway's turn of three spans.

The ground has been prepared for the construction of a building to house the regional centre of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) at Vadakara. As much as two acres of land had been made available at the Karuvancherry desam in the Palayad village, Maniyoor, for the facility. The office now functioned from a rented premise at Narayana Nagar, Vadakara.

The State government had exempted registration charges and stamp duty on the land registration. The Maniyoor panchayat was ready to make available the requisite land but the registration was held up due to the heavy expenditure involved.

Union Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran had sanctioned Rs.25 lakh from his MP’s local area development fund, as the first instalment of funds needed for construction.

The work would start shortly, a spokesman for the Minister said. The IGNOU study centre at Vadakara was inaugurated by Defence Minister A.K. Antony in January 2011. It served students in Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod, and Wayanad districts.

^^ He did good perfomance when he was Kannur MP too. He brought the second FM station in Kerala to Kannur in 1991. That is just 1 or 2 year after Kochi. From then we are enjoying clear FM radio. Even older stations like Trivandrum, Thrissur and Calicut got FM only a decade or more later. That station is why we have private FM channels in Kannur now. Many major cities in Kerala still don't have FM stations. There are many other contributions by him. Abdullakutty who replaced him was not bad as an MP. But Sudhakaran is totally useless.

X posting from Calicut Ports and harbours

The government has agreed to consider the demand for wharf facilities at the Chombal fishing harbour in Vadakara so as to enable mechanised fishing boats to anchor near the shore.

This was announced by Fisheries Minister K. Babu in reply to a submission from C.K. Nanu, MLA, in the State Assembly recently, a spokesman for the Minister’s office said in a press note on Saturday. The Minister said that since the Chombal harbour was intended for traditional fishermen, it had not been provided wharf facilities needed for mechanised boats.

The Minister also said that for dredging the fishing harbours in the State, an estimate of Rs.1,054 lakh had been prepared and granted administrative sanction. An estimate of Rs.355 lakh for Chombal fishing harbour had been granted technical sanction and tenders for executing the work had been invited.

Tenders had also been invited for a sewerage plant at the pollution control plant at Chombal harbour. Kudumbasree workers had been deployed to keep the premises of the harbour clean.

Reflecting the dexterity of Indian craftsmen and the diversity of the Indian handicrafts, the second edition of Sargolsav, the annual crafts and arts festival organised under the aegis of the Sargalaya Kerala Arts and Crafts Village, began at Vadakara on Sunday.

Tourism Minister A.P. Anil Kumar inaugurated the fair, which is expected to attract both domestic and international tourists.

This edition of the fair to which eminent artists from various parts of the country have been invited is being organised with direct support of the Tourism Department. Twelve States have sent their delegates to the crafts village to showcase their exclusive crafts for tourists.

The organising committee said 80 craftsmen from other States will display their products. The delegates include women and 100 craftsmen from Kerala. Special accommodation has been provided to all the participating members in and around the crafts village.

The exhibition will go on till January 21 with various cultural programmes and entertainment facilities for the visitors.

Events

Live demonstrations, camps for painters and sculptors, theme-based paintings, competitions for children, national crafts seminar, and celebrity painters’ meet are some of events planned.

Facilities will be made for boating in the Moorad river. Two motorboats have been brought to the venue for the purpose.

Prestigious organisations such as the National Institute of Design, Kerala State Institute of Design, Indian Institute of Craft and Design, and Kerala State Science and Technology Museum will participate in the two-week long fair. J.K. Rajesh, general manager of the crafts village, said the organising committee expected over two lakh people to visit the fair venue.

The expected expense for hosting the event was Rs.40 lakh, of which a large part would be mobilised through sponsors.

The craft village management has approached the State government to sanction a special fund under the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival project for supporting the event. The proposal is likely to win government nod, officials in charge of the fair said.

Extra income to women fish workers
The first seafood outlet of the Fisheries Department will soon start functioning at the block panchayat building at Mukkali in Vadakara.

Besides fish, fish-based delicacies will be sold through the outlet.

The primary objective of the outlet is to provide a supplementary income to women fish workers who are now totally dependent on fishing for their livelihood.

The outlet, which will be under the care of the Society for Assistance to Fisherwomen (SAF) functioning under the Theera Maithri Scheme of the department, will be run by six fisherwomen from the below poverty line (BPL) category.

Among the fare to be sold are tapioca served with fish curry, and products of the department such as fish chutney, fish cutlet, and fish pickles. It will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The SAF will give professional training to fisherwomen to man the outlet. It will also provide Rs.6 lakh as financial help for the venture.

All these three local stations mentioned, essentially need a facelift, as they lack the basic facilities required for a railway station. Considering the number of daily commuters from these stations to Kozhikode and Kannur, they even require a parking facility.

Iringal is to be given priority with the proximity of Sargalaya as in the future that will serve as the railway station (In the times of memu operating in 30 minutes interval.... hahaha) for the tourist destination.

Kottaakkal beach is no more. Denudation or erosion is the geographical explanation for it.

Vadakara beach is in formation state now, mainly because of the construction of a breakwater there. Lets hope that we will have a good length of beach in the far future, but it will not be a drive in beach.

Onchiyam...is not a coastal hamlet. It lies east of the railway line.

We have a small but clean beach near Nadapuram road. Its known as 'Kallindade', which means near the rocks...
Thats our local tourist spot, which has a small group of offshore lying rocks visible in the low tide.

As mentioned earlier in the post quoted, the daily commuters from Nadapuram Road has increased considerably in the recent years and expecting more Kozhikode - Kannur passengers in the forthcoming budget. An early morning snap of the crowd waiting for 06:40 Kozhikode passenger.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-58s_dBW92jY/URz1AVK5vNI/AAAAAAAACwI/dy4BuhLLFd4/s720/IMAG0928.jpg

All these three local stations mentioned, essentially need a facelift, as they lack the basic facilities required for a railway station. Considering the number of daily commuters from these stations to Kozhikode and Kannur, they even require a parking facility.

No fund for new bridges across the new renovated canal according to minister. This will lead to agitation from people on either banks as the existing foot and road bridges connects them at regular intervals. Hope the Government will come up with a solution for this.

Nobody was there to en-quire about except Odhisha and Bengali babus.

'A car showroom' was what I made out from their vague descriptions. Will update as and when I get a confirmation.
