Thought I'd start a thread for non-urban photos of the North of England (NE and Cumbria).

Here's a couple to get things going;

^^ Stunning castle

Here's another couple of Ennerdale Water, which is one of the quieter areas in the Lake District. Bill Clinton proposed to Hillary here (she said no). The final scene from 28 days later was also filmed here.

Re-sized your image.

The re-size option at upload stage, has been discussed within SSC in the recent past, but I can confirm that it is not high on the priorities for potential upgrades at present.

Cheers NH. Back in the early days of SSC, before the big hack we could use HTML code which gave a lot more options. You could even have text or images scrolling across the screen if you wanted. According to Jan allowing HTML again would just open the doors to hackers so it's off the cards unfortunately.

Great photos . . .

My Geography teacher would have LOVED them - they look like perfect examples of his beloved "U-shaped valleys", formed by the Glaciers during the Ice Age, as opposed to the normal "V-shaped valleys", caused by river erosion.

HEY - it takes ya back!!!

Absolutely fascinating history of Honister slate mine. It was resurrected by a local businessman called Mark Weir who worked ridiculous hours to get the mine operational again. After transforming it into a successful business he was killed in a helicopter crash. Read more at: http://www.honister-slate-mine.co.uk/mark_weir_tributes.asp

Absolutely fantastic photos, ---we love the Lake district, --btw, --I remember reading about that fella that was killed in his Helicopter, ----also think at the time, --he had been trying to get permission to construct a long zip wire near to where the mine is, as a tourist attraction.

Yes the zip line idea was controversial. The main one from Fleetwith pike down to the visitors' centre appears to have been blocked although there does appear to be a smaller zip line along with the "via ferrata" (lit. iron road) - a system of metal steps that allows people with no rock-climbing experience to climb up the cliffs. Looks great, actually. The site quotes about £35-40 which is incredibly cheap compared to something like the Sydney bridge climb.

HEXHAM is a typically idyllic English Market Town with a population of about 11,000 it is located 30 Minutes west of Newcastle upon Tyne by car or train.

It is surrounded by lovely countryside .... and as a bonus it has a 13th Centry Abbey in the centre!

Haweswater. Formerly a natural lake, but greatly enlarged by the construction of a dam, started in 1929, resulting in the flooding of two small villages. Photo by Mick Knapton:

From Wikipedia:
Prior to the valley being flooded in 1935, all the farms and dwellings of the villages of Mardale Green and Measand were demolished, as well as the centuries-old Dun Bull Inn at Mardale Green. The village church was dismantled and the stone used in constructing the dam; all the bodies in the churchyard were exhumed and re-buried at Shap. Today, when the water in the reservoir is low, the remains of the submerged village of Mardale Green can still be seen as stone walls and the village bridge become visible as the water level drops. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haweswater_Reservoir

One of the best ways to discover rural North East England and Cumbria is through the Coast-to-Coast walk, devised by Alfred Wainwright. This leads from St. Bees in the West to Robin Hood's Bay in the East. The distance is 192 miles, although wikipedia also quotes a recent re-measurement of 220 miles.

Starting things off at St. Bees (all photos by Doug Sim):

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/26/Start_of_coast_to_coast_-_winter.jpg/1024px-Start_of_coast_to_coast_-_winter.jpg

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/82/Guillemots_at_St_Bees_Head.jpg/1024px-Guillemots_at_St_Bees_Head.jpg

The cliffs are composed of a red Permian and Triassic sandstone about 200 Million years old. The SSSI citation carries a description of the interesting geological features. On the headland itself is evidence of erosional features, wave cut notch and a wave-cut platform. On St Bees Beach to the south to lessen the effects of longshore drift, a row of nine groynes have been put in place. St Bees Beach is backed by small mud cliffs which are an excellent place to study the glacial moraines that formed them. The shingle both at St Bees and Fleswick show a huge variety of glacier-borne stones.

Travelling inland from St. Bees, the coast-to-coast route leads up and over Dent, before descending into Ennerdale:

Looking North from Dent:

Along the way, there's the Kinniside Stone Circle:

http://www.visitcumbria.com/jan/kinniside1.jpg

(Jan Fialkowski)

"Not long after the First World War, a restoration job was accomplished by a working party. Having cleaned out and measured the sockets in the ground in which the stones were originally set, they searched for and located-the original twelve stones, and completely restored the site. Today the circle is exactly as it was when first laid out, thousands of years ago. Locally known as Kinniside Stone Circle, this circle used to be omitted from Ordnance Survey maps. The reason seems to be that at the time of the early surveys, the Kinniside Stone Circle was non-existent, all stones (12 of them) having long been taken by a local farmer for use as gateposts and building materials"

Have you had a look on the "Tyne Valley - Developments" thread, on the Newcastle Forum?

There's a lot of current stuff about Hexham on there, but also some historical stuff that I have posted using some of my Dad's photos (and other artefacts) from Hexham, from when he used to work at the Royal Hotel there.

Yes, I regularly check-in on that thread and enjoy seeing your fathers photos... especially the one of the Beaumont Street statue that I snapped.

THAT statue (known as 'Bensons Statue' or 'Bensons Memorial') has recently become a fairly important location in my family's story.

I am currently writing a Family History (from 1888 to the present day) using old letters, photos, diaries and assorted other documents, and amongst those documents is a series of 'old postcards' that have survived (kept by my Grandmother) since the 1905 to 1912 era.

Many are "to" my Grandmother (my fathers mother) and in a few of them that I have just found in an old suitcase from circa 1911, they are 'anonymous' or are signed by initial only and refer to "meetings" at Bensons Memorial (which was a very new meeting place, in those days).

We think they are from my eventual Grandfather-to-be . . . but we can't be absolutely sure!!

Here is one example (from 1911) that refers to a proposed meeting at Bensons Memorial . . .

Fascinating photo and postcard there. Unfortunately I wasn't able to stand in the middle of the road as your dad was!
