Cappadocia - Contiene varias ciudades subterráneas de carácter histórico, excavadas en formaciones geológicas extrañas producidas por la erupción de antiguos volcanes.Fueron habitadas incialmente por los Hititas, y más tarde por los primeros cristianos como escondite. Ahora son lugares arqueológicos y atracciones turísticas, pero no están habitadas.

Ciudad subterránea de Kaymakli




Kaymaklı (también conocida Kaymakli) es una de varias ciudades subterráneas (Mazi y Özkonak) y abandonadas en la región de Capadocia, en Anatolia central, Turquía. Se piensa que fue probablemente construida entre los siglos V y X. Aunque la falta de decoración y documentación hacen difícil fijar estas fechas, y ha sido ocupada por diversas culturas a través de los siglos. Su función principal era guarecer a los habitantes de la región en caso de invasiones. Su posición estratégica en el centro de la región de Capadocia (20 kilómetros al sur de Nevşehir), la hacía un refugio fácilmente alcanzable por los moradores.

La ciudad fue escarbada en el débil subsuelo ceniciento de Capadocia. Esta alcanzó un tamaño tal que podía recibir a cientos de personas, guareciéndolas por espacio de hasta seis meses. Tiene nueve niveles subterráneos descubiertos hasta ahora, de los cuales los cuatro superiores están abiertos al turismo. Los inferiores permanecen parcialmente obstruidos, o reservados para investigadores. Fue descubierta en 1964.
Tiene una sola entrada; pero una vez en el subsuelo, se extiende por 2,5 km². En el interior se encuentran áreas destinadas a almacenes de alimentos, establos, cisternas, cavas, cocinas, iglesias e inclusive sepulturas dispuestos en un laberinto de túneles y escaleras. En las cocinas, se aprecia que las paredes y el techo están impregnados de hollín. En las iglesias existen restos de los frescos bizantinos que las adornaban.

La ciudad cuenta con pozos de ventilación. La entrada es protegida por una piedra en forma de disco que se hacía girar para bloquear el paso por completo, y que solamente podía hacerse girar desde dentro. Un segundo disco protege la ciudad, unos metros más adentro sobre el túnel de entrada: como "doble seguro" en caso de que la primer entrada fuese franqueada. Existe un túnel subterráneo en dirección a vecina ciudad subterránea de Derinkuyu (9 km al sur), aunque el túnel no ha sido completamente liberado por lo que no se sabe si en la práctica existía comunicación subterránea entre estos dos refugios.

mas parecem serem buracos vazios,sem nenhum sinal de objetos humanos(talvez tenham sido retirados)

No me gustaria estar ahi abajo cuando haya un terremoto, que Turquia se encuentra en una zona sismica importante.

De veras que miedo... pero demasiado interesante esa forma de vida. Mas que el están encerrado, con poca luz, baja ventilación, estreches y poca altura de los espacios... lo que mataría fuese el calor tan impresionante que puede haber allí... no me imagino un verano sin luz :S

La ventilación en estas ciudades es de lo mas impresionante que he experimentado en mi vida.

Note los ductos de ventilación que vienen de los ríos subterraneos en las gráficas al principio del thread. Yo le metí la mano a uno de estos ductos y la presión del aire es fuertísima. Todo esto de una manera natural (arquitectura bioclimática?). Ni un aire condicionado que es un aparato mecánico tiene esta presión! Y el aire es friísimo. Estas construcciones se hicieron mas de 3000 años antes de cristo.


Calor alli? Estas son zonas áridas y en estos climas por la noche las temperaturas se bajan bastante. Si de día los ductos naturales de ventilación son fríos se imagina como son de noche?

Derinkuyu Underground City is an ancient multi-level underground city in the Derinkuyu district in Nevşehir Province, Turkey. It is on the road between Nevşehir and Niğde, at a distance of 29 km from Nevşehir.

With its eleven floors extending to a depth of approximately 85 m, it was large enough to shelter thousands of people together with their livestock and food stores. It is the largest excavated underground city in Turkey and is part of a network of several underground complexes found across Cappadocia.
It was opened to visitors in 1969 and to date, only ten percent of the underground city is accessible to tourists.

Features

The underground city at Derinkuyu could be closed from the inside with large stone doors. The complex has a total 11 floors, though many floors have not been excavated. Each floor could be closed off separately.
The city could accommodate between 3,000 and 50,000 people and had all the usual amenities found in other underground complexes across Cappadocia, such as wine and oil presses, stables, cellars, storage rooms, refectories, and chapels. Unique to the Derinkuyu complex and located on the second floor is a spacious room with a barrel vaulted ceiling. It has been reported that this room was used as a religious school and the rooms to the left were studies.

Between the third and fourth levels is a vertical staircase. This passage way leads to a cruciform church on the lowest level.
The large 55 m ventilation shaft appears to have been used as a well. The shaft also provided water to both the villagers above and, if the outside world was not accessible, to those in hiding.

History

First built in the soft volcanic rock of the Cappadocia region by the Phrygians in the 8th–7th centuries B.C according to the Turkish Department of Culture, the underground city at Derinkuyu was enlarged in the Byzantine era. The city was connected with other underground cities through miles of tunnels.

The underground city of Derinkuyu was the hiding place for the first Christians who were escaping from the persecution of the Roman empire. Everything discovered in these underground settlements belongs to the Middle Byzantine Period, between the 5th and the 10th centuries A.D. The number of underground settlements, generally used for taking refuge and for religious purposes, increased during this era. The Christian communities in the region took refuge, closing the millstone doors, when they were subjected to Arab raids which started in the 7th century. The raiders, aware of the dangers awaiting them inside, tried to make the local people leave their shelters by poisoning their wells.
