As we have threads dedicated to the major cities, I think we need a thread to showcase and collect pictures of the beautiful small towns and villages dotted all over Somalia.

Fishing Village of Haafuun (Xaafuun) | Bari Region

This is a small fishing village on the Idian ocean coast of the Bari region in Somalia. This village is located in a 40 KM long peninsula which juts out into the Indian Ocean and is the easternmost point in contintal Africa. The peninsula is joined to the mainland at the town of Foar by a narrow sand spit 20 km long, 3 km in width, and roughly 5 m above sea level.

The fishing town of Haafuun is located 2 km east of the sand spit and has a population of about 5,000 inhabitants. As you will see in the pictures below its houses have a distinct style of white houses with contrasting green roofs. The village is also home to historic structures and ruins beloning to the former sultanate of the region including administrative buildings and mosques.

Ras Hafun is believed to be the location of the ancient trade centre of Opone. Opone is mentioned in the anonymous Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, written in the first century CE, as a port strategically located on the trade route that spanned the length of the Indian Ocean's rim. Merchants from as far afield as Indonesia and Malaysia passed through Opone. As early as 50 CE, it was well known as a centre for the cinnamon trade, along with the barter of cloves and other spices, ivory, exotic animal skins and incense.

Ancient Egyptian, Roman and Persian Gulf pottery has been recovered from the site by an archaeological team from the University of Michigan. In the 1980s, the British Institute in East Africa recovered pre-Islamic Partho-Sasanian ceramics from Hafun which were dated to the first century BCE and the second through fifth centuries CE.

Fishing Village of Eyl (Cayl) | Nugaal Region

This is a small fishing and ancient trading village on the Indian ocean coast of the Nugaal region in Somalia.

The village is home to numerous historical structures including an extensive fort complex built by the Somali Dervish empire as well as structures belonging to the sultanates pre-dating it. There are also several seasonal wadis running adjacent to the village which is evident of the mountainous terrain surrounding it.

Eyl has a relatively mild climate (compared to towns on the Gulf of Aden). I wish it becomes a mid-sized city one day, Puntland is lacking big cities in the Eastern regions due to the absence of highways connecting these towns.

I love Xafuun, the Opone of Ancient times, that place is literally full of ancient treasures, but barely excavated.

The beautiful historic village of Hadaaftimo surrounded by rocky hills and mountainous terrain. Beautiful town in an amzing location. It seems this intimate village is well-planned and has a good layout. To my surprise the buildings and structures look very good and are in keeping with both the surroundings and eachother. It is located in sanaag and it is home to many archaeological sites and ancient buildings.

Tuulada (Village of) Cad Ma Dooni.

I don't know where exactly this village is but its a small farming village, probably in the riverine regions of the south.
