Faiz Ahmad Faiz [February 13, 1911 – November 20, 1984]
- Pakistani intellectual, poet, and one of the most famous poets of the Urdu language.

In a country where one authoritarian government has made way for another since its independence in 1947, Faiz Ahmed Faiz became a symbol of resistance and dissidence. His poetry, as much as his life, came to represent the longing of the people for the freedom which had come their way so briefly.

To the forces of the left and to those who sought to build a just and exploitation-free society, Faiz became a source of great ideological power. His voice always rang high and clear, and during the grave-like silence of martial law rule, his words remained a beacon of light that could not be extinguished.

Moonwalkers in Karachi, 1973: How many of you know or remember that the entire crew of NASA’s Apollo 17 flight to the moon visited Pakistan?

In July 1973, astronauts of the United State’s last mission to the moon arrived in Karachi. Their visit was widely covered by the press and Pakistan Television [PTV]. The astronauts were also honoured by a ‘welcome motorcade procession’ that travelled from Clifton Road till Tower area.

The photograph shows the motorcade reaching the Saddar area that was decorated with Pakistani, American and PPP flags and colourful banners.

Some of the astronauts travelled in an open truck [see picture]. The truck also carries a banner that reads [in Urdu]: ‘Welcome to the Apollo 17 astronauts.’

Despite a warning from a British CID of a plot to assassinate Jinnah during this ride, the program proceeded on schedule. Mountbatten joined Jinnah on this ride from Victoria Road till Government House. On reaching Government House, Jinnah kept his hand on Mountbatten's thigh and remarked, 'Thank God I brought you back alive'. 'I brought you back alive' retorted Mountbatten. Later on it was learnt that one of the conspirators lost his nerve at the crucial time.

Assuming they're the NN hills they could be visible because there would have been little pollution at that time and the air would have been clear.

Late 60's - Princess Ashraf Pahlavi is welcomed in Quetta.

Princess Ashraf ul-Mulki Pahlavi [born 26 October 1919], is the twin sister of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the late Shah of Iran and the Pahlavi Dynasty.
She currently resides in Paris, France. Since the Iranian Revolution, she has kept an extremely low profile and with the exception of a memoir published in the mid-1990s, has not made any public appearances or interviews since 1981.

Yeah that movie was actually quite good. I especially liked the fact that they showed the truth about how the west completely ignored the region after the Soviets were defeated.

^^ Despite of that it was amazing how much importance we as a country used to get among world powers. After that our military rulers and so called democratic leader have ruined the country so bad that countries like Afghanistan and Ethiopia get more importance than we. It is unbelievable to see how people are lined up and how many arrangements were made to welcome a Pakistani President.
Now when this disgusting creature A. Zordari (unfortunately a President of Pak) visits UK or USA no one among general public in those countries even know that Mr. 10% is on their soil.

Not a picture, but a rare letter by famous urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto to Pundit Nehru about Kashmir, written in Aug. 24, 1951.

Translated from the Hindi version of the original Urdu by M. Asaduddin.

Pundit Manto’s First Letter to Pundit Nehru
Pundit-ji, assalamu alaikum!

THIS IS THE FIRST LETTER, I’m sending you. By the grace of God you’re
considered very handsome by the Americans. Well, my features are not
exactly bad either. If I go to America, perhaps I’ll be accorded the same
status. But you’re the Prime Minister of India, and I’m the famed story
writer of Pakistan. Quite a deep gulf separating us! However, what is
common between us is that we are both Kashmiris. You’re a Nehru, I’m a
Manto. To be a Kashmiri is to be handsome, and to be handsome … I
don’t know.

...

You may smell the scent of burnt meat in this letter of mine. You
know there was a poet in our Kashmir, Ghani by name, who was well
known as “Ghani Kashmiri.” A poet from Iran came to visit him. The
doors of his house were open. He used to say, “What’s there in my house
that I should keep the doors locked? Well, I keep the doors closed when
I’m inside the house because I am its only asset.” The poet from Iran left
his poetry notebook in the vacant house. One couplet in that notebook
was incomplete. He had composed the second line but could not do the
first one. The second line ran thus: “The smell of kebab is wafting from
your clothes.” When the Iranian poet returned and looked in his
notebook, he found the first line written there: “Has the hand of a
blighted soul touched your fore-cloth?”

I think it'll be better if the name of the thread is changed to Rare Pictures (Post Independence) - Miscellaneous, as there are many threads on pre Independece Pakistan such as Pakiscape, Karachiscape, and pre independence Punjab/Sindh/KP/Balochistan threads and the above pics better belong there than here.

Anyone remember annas? I do. There were 16 annas in a rupee. An anna had 6 paisas. What became 50 paisas was 8 annas called athani. 4 annas was called a chawani.

I used to buy one "Bubbly" chewing gum for one or two annas (can't remember). In the school "tuck shop" a coke was 8 annas and a "patti" was 4 annas. If I had a rupee for lunch break I could eat well: one coke and two pattis. Most days I didn't have even one rupee.

My grandma used to also refer to something takka (now thats Bangladeshi currency).

There are still so many old urdu saying referring to taka, ana, payee, chavani etc

I remember Nazia Hasan from KGS kindergarten. She was with me in class 2. I remember telling my mother that a new girl has joined the class and my mother told me she and my father knew NH's parents. I remember telling her the next day.

Later she would come and go from KGS. Sometimes she would be in Karachi American School and sometimes out of the country.

In class 8 or 9 she was again in my class and during those days she used to sing in a children's TV program by some guy called Rushdie. Ahmed Rushdie I think. She once invited the class to the recording and I remember going.

She was one of the hot chicks. I probably never ever even talked to her. I was very shy and quiet as a kid.

After she died her parents claimed that she was poisoned by her husband but they couldn't prove it. May she rest in peace.

It's a pretty well known fact (at least for me) that it was the Pathan tribes that captured Azad Kashmir. Pakistan's army was practically non-existent at that time and was led by British officers. The Indians were unprepared and had to rush their troops to stop all of Kashmir from being captured. QeA accepted a ceasefire when Nehru promised a plebiscite which they haven't held till now.

Zaidis Photographers, Masson Narsingdas Building, The Mall #Lahore c. 1959
Photo by: Shahid Zaidi (Zaidis Photographers)

The story of Zaidis Photographers starts in 1904, when two brothers, Syed Wazir Ali Zaidi and Syed Nazir Ali Zaidi, formerly students of Mayo School of Arts (now NCA) left Lahore in search of improving their Photographic skills and become portrait painters and photographers.

The second generation spread all over the sub-continent after growig up learning and practicing photography, opening studios in Ooticomand, Conoor, Calcutta, Data, Chitagong, Khulna, Murree, Rawalpindi, Karachi, Abotabad and Peshawar.

In 1928, Syed Muhammad Ali Zaidi, the eldest of the second generation migrated back to Lahore and established his studio on The Mall where it still exists and is a proud landmark.

In 1962, Syed Shahid Ali Zaidi, from third generation of the Zaidis, took over the family business from his father and brought a lot of changes from the Back & White era to colour portraits and film making. Beside this he also started a new studio in Gulberg. Joining by his son, Syed Usman Zaidi, they have launched the fourth generation of Photography in the family.

The Civil and Military Gazette Office #Lahore c. 1960s

The Civil and Military Gazette was a daily English language newspaper founded in 1872 in British India. It was published from Lahore, Simla and Karachi, some times simultaneously, until its closure in 1963.

The Civil and Military Gazette is possibly most notable for being the workplace of renowned British author and poet, Rudyard Kipling. It was referred to by Kipling as his "mistress and most true love."
Kipling was assistant editor of the CMG, a job procured for him by his father, who was curator of the Lahore Museum , when it was decided that he lacked the academic ability to get into Oxford University on a scholarship.

Rudyard Kipling eventually left the Civil and Military Gazette in 1887, to move to its sister-newspaper in Allahabad, The Pioneer.

Mahbub Jamal Zahedi joined the Civil and Military Gazette in 1963, at a time when its last branch, situated in Lahore, was about to cease publication. He served there for only a few months, before he moved to Dawn in Karachi.
