Fine to see this! That monument at the sea is really fine and impressive!!!
I was in Baku for one evening and night before leaving for Turkmenistan. It was long ago - in 1986.
One question - are the oil towers in the sea visible from the places shown in the first pictures?

I completely did not expect it to look so European. It doesn't look Asian at all. I always wondered what Azerbaijan looks like, because I've seen picture of Armenia.

The metro has 2 lines in Baku, right? And what is it's population?

Welcome to the forum by the way! You're the first person from Caucasus here I think.

Very nice city. Whenever I tell people Azerjaiban can be considered a part of Europe they think Im crazy. Most Europeans seem to think Baku is a bunch of mud hut and ziggaruts or something, but I think these pictures points out how wrong they are.

NEFT DASHLARI:
A CITY IN THE SEA

Neft Dashlari, 4,000 inhabitants, is located about 40 kms east of Baku in the middle of the sea. This city has all the typical services of each town: post, medicals, cinemas, etc. For travelling here you need a special permission of the Azerbaijan Oil Ministry.

In fact... may be you noticed that in Skyscrapercity forum there are hot debates about th identity of Turkey - whether it is Europe or not. I would think that Azebaijan would be debated even more. Just be prepared.

It is very interesting that our latvian brother have asked such a question. I have said it because Latvia was divided from the other Europe for more than 50 years( Latvia was one of the 15 republics of USSR) and Larvia is not situated in the central or western part of Europe. And if you want to talk about Europe and go deep with this topic lets remember what does Europe mean. In ancient Greece people called - Europe the west from Greece, and Asia the east from Greece. So has everything situated in the east of Greece to be consider Asia today??? I know that it looks like a nonsence, if you are agree with me lets stop this polemic ok? I have just said that EUROPE IS NOT EUROPE WITHOUT WHOLE EUROPE! Nothing else. If someone doesn't want to consider my country as a part of Europe no problem, anyway it is not situated in the centre of Europe. It was always considered both south-east of Europe or west Asia, or something between them. So we have the choice Europe or Asia, and we have choosen Europe. Anyway as you know Europe is ending in Azerbaijan,Russia and Turkey, and if someone wants to leave them in Asia, then it is his own opinion. Azerbaijan has choosen Europe; Azerbaijan is a member of all the european organizations, except EU; Azerbaijan is a democratic and secular country; Azerbaijan has signed a Charty of whole Europe.
Europe is a continent, and the countries of this continent were connected to each other like a chain for ages. Do you know that Azerbaijani states Aggounlu and Garagounlu had embassies( or something like that as it was in 1400-1500 years) in Venice and Genue, Baku had provided 90% of oil in Europe until 20-th century, trade from Asia to Europe went through Azerbaijan, so it connected Europe with Asia.

Azerbaijan is situated in the south-east Europe (Caucasus). Territory of Azerbaijan is 86,6 thousands squire km( 18% is occupied by Armenia). Population is 8 200 000. Azerbaijan has a border with Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Turkey and Iran. The east of the country is washed by Caspian sea. The capital of Azerbaijan is Baku. Population of Baku - 2 000 000( unoficially more than 3 000 000). Other biggest cities are: Ganja( 302 000), Sumgait( 290 000), Sheki, Mingechevir, Nahchivan and others. Azerbaijan became independent in 1991. But after armenian occupation, has lost 18% of its territory( Karabagh and 6 other rayons(districts)). This conflict is still on hold and waiting for its solution.
Budget of Azebaijan is more than 2 billion dollars(2004). Azerbaijan has many natural resourses, among which the most important are petrol and natural gas. Today Azerbaijan is selling its petrol, but not in a big amount, something like 15 milion tons in a year, but it will be about 70 million tons after BTC will opened. Azerbaijan,Georgia nad Turkey are constructed BTC( Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan) pipeline. It will be finished and work in 2005. I will try to provide you with more information soon.

These pictures are too old! I think 70-th years of 20-th century. But i am not going to lie, in sope parts of Baku suburbs you can see this, but this is reducing very fast. Anyway our country is not going to pump petrol in the seaside, for us it is the time to work in the sea( far from Baku).

It's not your fault. Photobucket has invented some restrictions - if your pictures are accessed "too much" by all of us then at certain moment nearer to the end of month they are "switched out". Wait for the 1st December, and here they would be again.

Better option - upload images at www.imageshack.us

Baku was always an important city under the Tsar’s and Soviet Union. This is deeply reflected in the richness of the architecture and people. Europe cannot be unified without Azerbaijan! About Azerbaijan being Turkish, is this more cultural? Azerbaijan (also Turkey) strikes me more as a Caucasus country and European, rather then a Central Asian nation.

I like Azerbaijan, and i think that the Caucasus nations belong to Europe, well if they want to. I do not view Europe as a fortress that must be defended, instead i think the more countires join us the richer we will be, at least culturally.
Baku looks great. I hope the evironment will also be great.

I agree completely! I believe that all those countries, especially Azerbaijan ARE in Europe, and people that keep saying they aren't haven't the slightest idea what they're talking about.
Baku, as well of the rest of Azerbaijan is VERY European. It has those oriental buildings, and a great influence in European culture. The question I had was, is there any way for Azerbaijan to join the EU? That is, if the majority of the country would like to...

VelesHomais
May 8th, 2005, 06:40 AM
My opinion is that Azerbaijan has nothing in common with central asian countries where people ride on camels.

This is European as it gets. However I doubt it will join EU but will definitely be in some important neighbour-program of cooperation.

Baku certainly looks very beautiful and european of course.
I agree with Stanislav , i think that Azerbaijan's exeptance in the EU all depends in Turkey.
If Turkey is allowed in the EU then Azerbaijan will be there too.
