on hotels, retail and accommodations:

Retailers aim to woo China's big spenders
(China Daily, June 27)

London's retailers have long been wooing big-spending Chinese tourists, but this year's Olympics has made them ever keener to introduce innovative offerings, to capitalize upon so rare an opportunity.

The Grosvenor, a four-star hotel near London's Victoria Railway Station, is introducing a selection of Chinese breakfast items from early July, said Operations Manager Dean Culpan.

The new menu will include congee, pickled vegetables, century eggs, salted duck eggs, and youtiao (fried dough sticks), as well as an assortment of dim sum, buns and dumplings.

The hotel will also add Chinese newspapers and TV channels in guest rooms, and provide Mandarin information booklets, as the hotel has "received above average bookings from Chinese-based businesses for the Olympic period", said Culpan.

Harrods, the iconic department store in Knightsbridge, has launched an Android app in Mandarin to help Chinese shoppers better navigate its large store space. Functions of the app include a GPS guide, news and events updates and restaurant menus.

As a part of the promotion, the store invited a group of Chinese celebrities to try the app, and write about it on a micro blog. The celebrities included Happy Camp presenters Li Weijia and He Jiong of Hunan Satellite TV.

One reason that Chinese tourists have become a focus for many London retailers is that they "particularly like to shop", said Mary Rance, chief executive of Britain's tourism industry association UKinbound.

Rance said that retailers are increasingly opening new outlets in hotels, to make shopping easier for Chinese tourists.

Not only do Chinese tourists like shopping, they also have the financial means to do so, despite the current world economic downturn.

In the financial year ending in November, Chinese shoppers spent $2.15 trillion on tax-free products, a 56 percent increase year-on-year, according to the tax refund services provider Global Blue.

Luxury stores like Harrods, Selfridges and Liberty are already well aware of the benefits of employing Mandarin-speaking staff, but this trend is now spreading to other venues.

This includes Leaderboard Golf, a club with courses in several locations in southern England.

"The Chinese have developed a love for golf and we felt it is logical to reach out to this new tourist group and make it clear that they are welcome at our courses," said Paul Gibbons, chairman of Leaderboard.

Overseas subsidiaries of Chinese companies are also engaged in the competition to capture tourism income from the Chinese market.

China Telecom, the nation's largest fixed-line operator by customer numbers, launched a UK SIM card earlier this year.

With a 24-hour Chinese language customer service line providing information on transport routes and tourism services, the new product is expected to make Chinese tourists' holidays more convenient.

Ou Yan, managing director of China Telecom Europe, told China Daily that the launch was linked to the Olympics, and that the SIM card will be available for purchase in China, so that visitors can use it upon arriving in the UK.

While all these initiatives should give the UK's tourism industry a boost during the Olympics, Rance believes the real challenge lies in the longer term to attract Chinese tourists.

"Chinese tourists are important all of the time, not just for the Olympics, because they're incredibly important as a source market for the UK," she said.

"Providing bespoke services to Chinese tourists is important, as well as doing more to understand their needs."

She added that other issues UKinbound was lobbying the government on include speeding up the visa process for tourists, and reducing air passenger duty, which can cost between 85 pounds ($132) and 92 pounds per passenger for long-haul flights of more than 6,400 kilometers.

"So I don't think an increase in tourist numbers is going to just happen, I think it'll be done with a bit of help from the government," she said.

Spreading the global message: VisitBritain
(China Daily, June 27)

Forecasts suggest 30.7m visitors will spend 17.6b pounds this summer

The UK government's tourism agency VisitBritain has come up with a number of novel approaches to attract Chinese tourists during and after the London Olympics.

Within the past few months, a special tourism route was launched, billboard adverts were placed in major Shanghai and Beijing subway stations, and special television programs and newspaper columns introduced aspects of life in the United Kingdom and its culture.

"China is regarded as one of the most important markets for attracting visitors to the UK," said Bonnie Hua, who works in VisitBritain's China office alongside five other colleagues.

Globally, VisitBritain forecasts that the UK will attract 30.7 million visitors this year, spending 17.6 billion pounds ($27 billion) in the process.

Although this amount is less than the 17.9 billion pounds visitors spent in the UK last year, VisitBritain Chief Executive Sandie Dawe said it is still a "good outcome" given the current global economic climate.

A survey VisitBritain conducted in 2006-07 showed that 22 percent of people globally would be more likely to visit the UK because of the Olympics.

China ranked fifth-highest with 39 percent, after Mexico, Indonesia, India and Malaysia, making the work of Hua's team crucially important.

"This year is special for the UK, because we have the Olympics, the London 2012 Festival, and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. But we're also marketing them in a way that would appeal to a Chinese audience," she said.

Hua's team has launched a micro blog on Sina Weibo, a popular Chinese micro-blogging website, with a competition related to VisitBritain's poster campaign promoting Britain's heritage.

Hua's team asked commuters to take photos of these adverts in subway stations and upload them to the micro blog along with a slogan to match the advertisements.

"We received some very creative submissions, and the campaign has got the Chinese public thinking about what tourism in Britain really means," she said.

Hundreds of people took part in the competitions, with the winners receiving gifts made in Britain, including the Olympics mascot, souvenirs of the Diamond Jubilee and items from Shakespeare's birthplace museum's shop.

"For the Chinese tourists, the obvious British attraction is culture," said Hua.

As a result, her team used the culture, heritage and countryside versions of the campaign's poster collection most frequently in magazine, online and subway station advertisements.

Other key visuals in the campaign are shopping, sport, music and food.
To highlight aspects of Britain's royal and sporting culture among Chinese tourists, VisitBritain and the Chinese travel agency Lvmama together launched a special 11-day tour, which costs 21,500 yuan ($3,379).

To promote the initiative, VisitBritain has also chosen two Chinese goodwill ambassadors - Chinese Olympic rider Hua Tian and actress Li Bingbing.

Since May, Hua Tian has been writing weekly columns for the Shanghai Morning Post, introducing his life in the UK.

Li hosted five episodes of London Action, a cultural program on China Central Television, between February and March, introducing Britain's Olympic culture, heritage and music.

Just before the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, VisitBritain hosted a tea party where an actress looking like Queen Elizabeth shared afternoon tea with more than 100 Chinese guests at the Daning International Plaza in Shanghai.

The surprise visit brought Britain's festive spirit to China, with the regal look-alike followed on the streets of Shanghai by thousands of Chinese fans who thought she was the real thing.

VisitBritain plans to work with Chinese news portal Sina.com to offer Chinese visitors tax return advice in partnership with tax refund provider Global Blue, and publish blog posts on British culture written by a dedicated team of Chinese celebrity bloggers.

In August, the Shanghai Arts Channel will also broadcast a weekly television program focusing on the Cultural Olympiad - a series of arts programs inspired by the Olympics including films, exhibitions, live performances, music, and outdoor events.

"We hope the Chinese tourists will continue to visit Britain after the Olympics, so we will continue to introduce new surprises to the market to facilitate that," said Bonnie Hua.

1-month countdown marked by Olympic rings above Thames and opening of media center
(Shanghai Daily/Xinhua, June 28)

LONDON, June 27 (Xinhua) -- A set of giant Olympic rings were lowered over River Thames, the media center welcomed its first batch of users and an official song was released on Wednesday, one month prior to the London Olympic Games.

OLYMPIC RINGS LOWERED

The rings were lowered from the iconic Tower Bridge in London Wednesday morning. Passers-by stopped to take photos and wave, as their mayor Boris Johnson and Games chief Sebastian Coe stood on a barge, sailing past the site.

The rings, 25 meters wide and 11.5 meters tall, weighed three tonnes.

"With one month to go to the Olympic Games opening ceremony, these spectacular rings on one of London's most famous landmarks will excite and inspire residents and visitors in the capital," said Coe.

Johnson, clasping hands with Coe, gave the order to lower the rings. Talking about the last month before the sports gala, Johnson said, "we are making our final preparations and want to ensure each and every person in the capital gets a flavor of the celebrations and feels part of the Games."

PRESS CENTER IN OPERATION

The main press center (MPC) in east London opened on Wednesday.

It offers 31,000 square meters of office space for 6,000 journalists, photographers and accredited non-rights holding broadcasters, as well as staff from the International Olympic Committee and the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). During the Games, it will be open for 52 days. Outside the four-floor building, a 200-meter-long wooden corridor was flanked by shops, post office, dry cleaners, pharmacy and hair salon.

Next to the main MPC building, a "wooden box" was used as canteen to provide food. It was estimated that 480,000 meals and 1.6 million cups of tea will be consumed over 24 hours a day.

The Press Workroom and Main Press Center bar are named after two British Olympic sports writers, John Rodda for the Guardian and Steve Parry, sports editor at Reuters, who died on the eve of the Beijing Olympics.

"Like the athletes competing at London 2012, the world's writers and photographers who will be based in the MPC are at the top of their profession," said Coe. "This is our first venue on the venue on the Olympic Park to open for business and we are ready to welcome the world's media."

Hugh Robertson, Minister for Sport, hoped that the venue could facilitate journalists, so that they will be able to "take the Games beyond London to the world", and "help take the Games to the future generation".

The press conference room in the MPC was used for the first time to launch a official song of the London 2012 Olympics. Namely "Survival", the song by Muse was said to be inspired by the "strength and determination" of athletes on the Olympic arena.

It will be available to download from Thursday, and will be played throughout sports sessions in all London 2012 venues.

Four other official songs are to be released next month.

TO BE IMPROVED

According to LOCOG CEO Paul Deighton, some seven million, or more than 80 percent of the Olympic tickets have been sold.

"We have finished training of volunteers and are waiting for arrival of athletes," he said.

Apart from a volleyball venue which is still being built, other Olympic venues are ready, he added.

It was not until June 18 that the construction of the 15,000-seat beach volleyball arena started, a report from local media the Telegraph said. "Owing to the Queen's Jubilee celebrations, and the Trooping the Color ceremony, the schedule of the build allows only 36 days to undertake a project that would ordinarily take 14 months," it said.

Traffic is another problem. Sebastian Coe was late Wednesday morning, which aroused concern against for the rankling traffic condition. Tens of thousands of visitors will flock to London this year. With bus drivers threatening to go on strike over bonus dispute, the city needs to take some measure so as to prevent the traffic from paralyzing.

Deighton said frankly that preparation for the Olympics was far from cakewalk, concerning the "enormous size of the venues, complexity of the event and number of people involved". "When you see a gliding swan on the surface, its legs were struggling beneath the water," he said.

London started preparation for the Olympics seven years ago. "During the seven-year journey, time is passing fast," he said. "We will make sure that we have done everything we can, so as to hold a successful Olympics."

Medal projections by China Daily

With the 2012 Summer Olympics just around the corner, China Daily provides projection and analysis of the potential medalists for the upcoming London Games, highlighting the Chinese team's medal hopefuls.

Badminton

The sport was invented by the British, but Asian nations have ruled the roost in recent decades as China, Indonesia and South Korea have won 23 out of 24 of the titles offered since badminton joined the Olympics in 1992.

Chinese women, led by world No 1 Wang Yihan, hold all of the top four singles rankings, while the men boast three of the top four. Men's No 1 Lin humiliated long-time rival Lee Chong Wei in the final at Beijing and may only have his Chinese teammates to worry about in London. Women's doubles champion Yu Yang is back, albeit with a different partner in Wang Xiaoli, while long-serving head coach Li Yongbo is still the team's hard-bitten conductor.

Much of this year's intrigue will revolve around which teams can deny China complete hegemony. Women's world No 5 Saina Nehwal appears as equipped as any, and has raised India's hopes of a first badminton medal after upsetting China's best at the Indonesian Open last month. [Full analysis; Medal Projections]

Table Tennis

Since the sport joined the Olympic program in 1988, China has exerted an iron grip - taking 20 of the 24 available golds, including all four at Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000. There have been only four non-Chinese golds - three for South Korea and one for Sweden's Jan-Ove Waldner, who won the men's singles in 1992 and remains the only non-Asian gold medalist. But in London, there will be at least two non-Chinese paddlers on the podium, after a new rule limited each country to just two singles entrants.

Underlining China's supremacy, as of June it boasted the world's top five men and top four women. Men's No 1 Zhang Jike enters the singles in London along with Wang Hao, while Ma Long will join for the men's team event. Three-time gold medalist Ma Lin, the reigning singles champion, missed out. Germany's Timo Boll, ranked sixth and part of the team that took silver in Beijing, is the only non-Asian in the men's or women's top 10s.

On the women's side, Chinese world champion Ding Ning topped the rankings in June. Li Xiaoxia will also play singles and Guo Yue is included for the women's team competition. Kasumi Ishikawa of Japan was the highest-ranked non-Chinese, at No 5, with the Singapore duo of Wang Yuegu and Feng Tianwei, part of the women's team that took silver behind China in Beijing, also in the top 10. [Full analysis; Medal Projections]

Weightlifting

Russia has an impressive lineup in the game of power, agility and speed and should challenge the Chinese in the heavy divisions. China, which won one silver and eight gold medals in Beijing, still dominates the lower weight categories. Kazakhstan has a few gold medal contenders like Ilya Ilin, defending Olympic champion in the men's 94kg category, and double world champion Zulfiya Chinshanlo in the women's 53kg class. The quest for gold and the unofficial title of world's strongest woman likely will be a showdown between Zhou Lulu of China and Tatiana Kashirina of Russia.

As always, weightlifting is struggling to contain its dark side - doping. Some would-be medal candidates have been barred from competing in London after failing drug tests, including former Olympic, world and European champion Taylan Nurcan of Turkey, Ukrainian superheavyweight Olha Korobka and China's Olympic champion Liao Hui. [Full analysis; Medal Projections]

Tennis

Roger Federer has set his sights on crowning his remarkable record at Wimbledon by winning Olympic gold on his favorite grass courts. For the second time, and first since 1908, Wimbledon will play host to an Olympic tennis tournament, comprising men's and women's singles, as well as doubles and mixed doubles. Federer isn't the only top star who can't wait for the Games, which start three weeks after Wimbledon concluded. World tops Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal also aim at a singles gold at the All- England Club this year.

In the women's event, French Open champion Maria Sharapova can't wait to represent Russia after missing the 2008 Olympics after shoulder surgery. Newly-crowned Wimbledon champion Serena Williams, world No 1 Victoria Azarenka and China's first Grand Slam winner Li Na are also in pursuit of an Olympic gold for their couintry. [Full analysis; Medal Projections]

Gymnastics

The US women won the world title in 2003, 2007 and 2011 and have produced four of the past six all-round champions, but they have won only one Olympic team title, way back in 1996. They have gone to the past two Olympics as the world champions, only to come up a step short on the podium. This year, the US looks stronger from top to bottom than rivals Russia, Romania and China, the defending Olympic champion.

On the men's side, the Chinese dynasty will face big challenges. China has been on top of men's gymnastics for much of this century, winning five straight world titles as well as the gold medals at the Sydney and Beijing Olympics. But China looked vulnerable in winning the world title last autumn. The Chinese finished qualifying behind Japan and the US, the first time since the Athens Olympics they had finished anywhere but first in any phase of a major competition. The reduction in team size, from six to five, will hurt China most, putting more of an emphasis on all-rounders, something the Chinese lack. The Japanese and the US will pose the biggest obstable. [Full analysis; Medal Projections]

Basketball

USA Basketball finalized its 12-man squad for the London Olympics on Saturday with a list of NBA stars including LeBron James, coming off his first NBA title with Miami, and Kobe Bryant who are joined by 2008 gold medal-winning teammates Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Deron Williams on the squad again guided by Duke University coach Mike Krzyzewski. NBA scoring champion Kevin Durant and Oklahoma City teammate Russell Westbrook, who lost to Miami in the NBA Finals, are also joined by 2010 world championship teammates Tyson Chandler and Kevin Love, two vital big men for the Americans.

Beijing Olympics runner-up Spain, led by Oklahoma City's Serge Ibaka, the NBA's top shot blocker each of the past two seasons, and Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol will still pose tough threat to the defending champions. [Full analysis and Medal Projections for Men and Women]

Sailing

The British sailing star Ben Ainslie will be the main attraction during the Olympic regatta off Weymouth and Portland, some three hours southwest of London. If he wins his fourth straight gold medal and fifth straight medal overall, Ainslie will become the most successful Olympic sailor ever. [Full analysis; Medal Projections]

Rowing

Hosts Britain is the favorite to top the medals table out on the rippling waters as the event is the only sport in which Britain has won gold at every Games since 1984. Australia, New Zealand and Germany had strong showings in recent world championships and World Cup regattas. The United States and Canada could make the London podium, too. China is hopeful of winning medals in men's lightweight coxless fours, women single sculls and lightweight double sculls. [Full analysis; Medal Projections]

Canoe/Kayak

European powers Slovakia, Germany and Hungary are big forces as traditional Olympic powers United States, China and Russia are not competitive in this eventh. Slovakia has ruled the whitewater waves since the turn of the century, making its paddlers the country's most successful sports stars. All seven of Slovakia's gold medals have come in canoe slalom. "Made in China" for London Olympics
(Shanghai Daily/Xinhua, July 21)

DALIAN, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Workers are busy working in front of sewing machines in a manufacturing workshop in the northeastern coastal city of Dalian as the 2012 London Olympics approaches.

Making uniforms for this year's U.S. Olympic athletes, Dayang Group Co., Ltd. has encountered controversy following complaints from a group of U.S. lawmakers, led by Senate majority leader Harry Reid, who chided the U.S. Olympic Committee for not providing U.S. Olympians with domestically produced uniforms last week.

"I think they should take all the outfits, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over," Reid said. Li Guilian, president of the Dayang Group, said the group had actually produced more than 3,000 formal outfits for the U.S. delegation to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Ralph Lauren, a renowned U.S. fashion designer, spoke highly of the quality of clothes made by the Dayang Group, adding that their quality persuaded him to work with the company again this year.

UK border guards to strike on eve of Olympics
(Shanghai Daily/Xinhua, July 21)

BORDER guards at British airports will walk off the job July 26, the day before the London Olympics begin, creating an Olympic-sized logistical headache for British officials. Members of the Public and Commercial Services Union voted for the 24-hour strike in a dispute over pay and job losses.

Even without the strike, London's Heathrow Airport has been beset for months by sporadic long lines at passport control, which the union blames on government spending cuts. The problem had eased in the last week as thousands of Olympic VIPs arrived for the games, but a walkout threatens a return of the endless waits at the worst possible moment for Britain's international image.

Home Secretary Theresa May, Britain's interior minister, called the decision to stage a strike on the eve of the games "shameful." She said the government would "put contingency arrangements in place to ensure we can deal with people coming through the border as smoothly as possible."

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Iziane Castro Marques, a mainstay of the Brazilian basketball team, was cut from the Olympic squad on Friday for disciplinary reasons just eight days before the tournament.

Brazil's delegation chief Hortencia Marcari did not confirm nor deny the allegations but said the decision to cut Marques was final. "I'm not going to say what the reason was. The team has rules and they were broken," Marcari noted.

LONDON, July 20 (Xinhua) -- The hope of the British football team of taking medal from the 2012 London Olympics was given a shock when they were beaten 2-0 at home by Brazil on Friday.

Brazil midfielder, Sandro, who plays for Tottenham Hotspurs, opened the scoring with a far post header after 12 minutes when the GB defense failed to deal with a cross from the right wing.

LONDON, July 20 (Xinhua) -- The Chairman of the London 2012 Olympic Games, Lord Coe, this Friday promised the Games will be 'safe and secure.'

Speaking on BBC radio, Lord Coe responded to questions regarding the failure of private security company G4S to provide the required number of security staff, which had led to a further 3,500 troops being called in last week. Around 17,000 troops are now involved in helping keep the Olympics safe.

Meanwhile a further 1,200 military personnel are on standby should G4S employees fail to provide the expected cover at venues for the Olympics, which begins on July 27.

Team Russia expect 16 medals in Olympic athletics
(Russia Today, July 20)

Athletics has long provided a stream of success for both the USSR and Russia at the Olympics and there’s every chance for the tradition to be preserved in London 2012, with the women’s team being especially strong.

*With 47 sets of medals on offer in athletics, it’s no wonder Russia is counting heavily on their athletics team for success. They will be heading to London with a 109-strong squad, three more than in Beijing four years ago and they’ll be accompanied by 49 coaches and staff.

“We have chances in 16 athletic events; it’s especially women’s events, 13 women events and 3 men events,” Valentin Balakhnichev, Russian Athletics Federation's president, told RT. Rising starlet Ekaterina Poistogova will be heading to London after some truly surprising results earlier this year.

Diving for Olympic silverware
(Russia Today, July 12)

Despite Chinese total domination in the sport, Russian divers still hope for medals at the upcoming London Olympics. The last decade in diving saw Chinese athletes go from strength to strength, both in the men's and women's competition.

At their home Olympic Games in Beijing four years ago, they clinched gold in seven categories out of the possible eight. The rest of the world, led by Russian divers, was left to wonder just how they could break the monopoly.

Russian synchronized swimmers hope to continue Olympic dominance
(Russia Today, July 18)

Total dominance in any given sport is a rare thing today, but Russia has done just that in synchronized swimming. Since 2000, Russians have had a stranglehold on the Olympic gold. RT caught up with the hopefuls on the eve of the London Games.

Russia’s synchronized swimming team and duet have won all six possible gold medals in the last three Olympic Games. In addition, they have also contributed heavily to Russia’s overall gold medal tally in both the World and European Aquatics Championships.

But whether or not their challengers have dropped their standards in recent times, it’s clear the current batch of Russian athletes are training hard.

Parker ready to celebrate Olympics with daughter
(Shanghai Daily/Agencies, July 24)

CANDACE Parker can't wait to get to London. It's not just because she'll be playing in her second Olympics or that she'll get to see the city for the first time. She's just really excited to be reunited with her 3-year-old daughter Lailaa.

"This Olympics is really for her. It will be a great experience for her to look back at this when she's old enough," Parker said. "This time four years ago she wasn't even a thought and now she'll be at the Olympics with me. It means a lot for her to be here with me."

Parker hasn't seen her daughter since the U.S. women's basketball team left Washington, D.C., on July 16. It's the longest the two have been apart since Lailaa was born on May 13, 2009. The two have traveled around the world as Lailaa is always by her side. When Parker plays in Russia in the winter, Lailaa is there. When she goes on the road during the WNBA season, her daughter is around.

Olympic opener will be spectacular but not secret

But in the age of camera phones and social media, with 10,000 performers in the ceremony, thousands of Olympic security and staff and more than 10,000 journalists already at the Olympic Park, not much can be kept out of the public domain.

"Part of the modern world means you can't really do that," Boyle acknowledged about keeping secrets as he showed journalists a mock-up of the set for the opening scene of the ceremony, weeks before the event.

Wu and He take first gold in diving competition
(China Daily, July 29)

LONDON -- They went into the women's 3m synchronized springboard competition as overwhelming favorites and they didn't disappoint: Wun Minxia and He Zi opened the diving competition in the Aquatics center with a stunning performance that hints that the Chinese diving team might be able to complete the clean sweep of gold medals many predict for them.

Wu and He's display decides the first of eight medal events in diving. China won seven out of eight in Beijing four years ago and this time they are aiming go one better. While a thunderstorm raged outside, the reigning world champions showed their total dominance of the event with a display of grace, talent and concentration.

British Newspaper The Telegraph is Really good at Shit Stirring !!!

The attached report implicating that Ye Shiwen was Doping !!!!

Unbelievable!!!

And F**k OFF!!!

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/olympics/swimming/9436873/London-2012-Olympics-swimming-still-in-shock-over-Shiwen-Yes-extraordinary-400m-medley-world-record.html

London 2012 Olympics: swimming still in shock over Shiwen Ye's extraordinary 400m medley world record

There were many astonishing things about 16-year-old Shiwen Ye’s world record breaking victory in the 400 metres individual medley on Saturday.

But nothing was more remarkable than that her split time for the final 50m of the freestyle leg was quicker than that of Ryan Lochte in the men’s race earlier that same evening. It was the first time that had happened in Olympic history.

When Lochte swam to gold, leaving Michael Phelps far in his wake in fourth, he clocked a final 50m freestyle time of 29.10sec.

In her race, Ye went surging through the water, past world champion Elizabeth Beisel, and recorded a final 50m time of 28.93. “Yeah, we were talking about that at dinner,” Lochte said. “It is pretty impressive. She’s fast. If she was there with me, she might have beat me.”

The scary thing, or at least one of the scary things, for Hannah Miley and the rest of the world’s women medley swimmers, is that the 400m medley is not even Ye’s strongest event.

She swims in the heats of the 200m medley on Monday morning, an event in which she is the world champion, having won the title in Shanghai last summer as a 15-year-old.

She thinks she can get better, too. “There’s much room for improvement,” Ye said. “It’s true for breaststroke I am lagging behind but I think my freestyle result is also not that good.

"Usually I’m very bad at turning. This is one of my worst basic skills, but turning is a very important skill, therefore I was practising my turns before the competition.”

Another scary thing is that her time of 4min 28.43sec not just broke the world record, but did so by more than a second.

The previous best of 4-29.45 had been recorded by Stephanie Rice in the Olympic final four years ago, and that done with the aid of a polyurethane suit, which has since been banned. It was an incredible performance and one, therefore, that drew attention to its own credibility.

Chinese swimming has such a shameful history of doping that any remarkable achievement by one of its athletes is inevitably met with cynicism. In the 1990s more than 40 swimmers tested positive for doping.

In the 1994 world swimming championships, China won an improbable 12 gold medals and later that year seven swimmers tested positive for steroids at the Asian Games. At the following Olympics in Atlanta in 1996, they won just one gold.

Just this weekend, Chen Zhanghao, the doctor with the Chinese Olympic team at the Los Angeles, Seoul and Barcelona Games, told Australia’s Sydney Morning Herald newspaper he had tested hormones, blood doping and steroids on about 50 elite athletes.

While the Chinese swimming authorities insist that their sports has cleaned itself up, five swimmers were banned for failing a test in 2009 and, even more worryingly, 16-year-old Li Zhesi tested positive for EPO in an out-of-competition test on March 31 of this year.

Li had won gold as part of the 4x100m freestyle team in 2009 and might have been in London had she not failed the drugs test.

Patrick Miley, Hannah’s father and coach, said he had been surprised by Ye’s time. “It was a remarkable performance,” he said. Was it credible, though, beating Lochte in that final split? “She is an excellent freestyle swimmer,” was all Miley said in answer.

“The Chinese got it right this time,” he said. “I cannot control what other people do. The sport is really exciting and amazing things do happen.

"This swimmer has progressed the event. I had a conversation with the sporting director of Scottish swimming four or five years ago in which I said I thought 4.25 was something that would be there in the not too distant future, that it would happen in my lifetime. Everything progresses.”

Even with her Chinese rival swimming quicker than Lochte, Miley could have made the podium if she had hit the personal best she was seeking.

“Hannah’s only disappointment will be that she wanted to swim a time that was the best she had ever swum. And it wasn’t,” Patrick said.

“The irony is that that time would have put her on the podium. That is why she is hard on herself. I mean she came here in the trials and did a time that would have won her the bronze medal.”

The 400m is Miley’s stronger distance and things are not going to get easier racing against Ye in the 200m. Her father, though, believes that with the pressure off, Miley is still capable of competing with the best.

“She has the 200m medley to come and she will enjoy it,” he said. “It is from a different perspective which might just allow her to do something very special.”

China's Chen & Li advance to last 16 in badminton
(Shanghai Daily, July 30)

ASIAN Games champion Chen Long of China banished a bad memory when he reached the last 16 in Olympic badminton by beating Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand 21-12, 21-17 in the London Games yesterday.

The third-ranked Chen lost in the first round in the same Wembley Arena at last year's world championships. That was a surprise, and he was prepared for Boonsak in their group elimination match, though it took Chen almost an hour to put out last month's Singapore Open champion.

Former No. 1 Lee Hyun-il of South Korea, who was fourth at the Beijing Games, beat Rodrigo Pacheco Carillo of Peru in two games. Sixth-seeded Sho Sasaki of Japan also won in two games, as did ninth-seeded Simon Santoso of Indonesia, on his 27th birthday. Santoso planned to celebrate only with a dinner with teammate

Yi shines in China's 97-81 loss to Spain
(China Daily, July 30)

LONDON - Yi Jianlian scored 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in his first match of the London Olympic Games but China still lost 97-81 to European champions Spain here on Sunday, while defending champions the United States had a dominant but not dreamy start.

It was the first Olympic match Yi played without perennial teammate Yao Ming, who retired last year. As the new leader of the Chinese national team, Yi put out the best. "I tried to give everything I have as the team leader," Yi said. "I didn't care much about my performances. I cared about the whole team and the outcome. I didn't play well in the first quarter as I fell into foul trouble. But we kept on and cut the lead as much as we could until the last quarter."

The first half was quite balancing as the lead was exchanged 10 times and the scoreline was tied four times. Spain bettered off during the last minutes to take a 53-42 lead. China kept themselves in the game in a tough third quarter when Spain's lead was cut to nine points, and China carried on to close it on 69-62 at the start of the last quarter.

Sun Yang shares silver with Park in his weakest event
(China Daily, July 31)

LONDON, July 30 (Xinhua) -- China's Olympic champion Sun Yang took a silver medal in what was considered his weakest event at London Olympics on Monday, carrying on his remarkable performance in pool.

Sun and his long-time rival Park Tae Hwan shared silver medals at men's 200m freestyle final at London Aquatic Center, while French superstar Yannick Agnel bagged his second gold after a team relay victory in the previous day.

In the dramatic race, Agnel was already in the lead by the time he surfaced following his initial dive off the starting block. Sun had a sluggish reaction time and was sixth after the first 50m. Later Sun roared on and chased closely U.S. Olympic champion Ryan Lochte and Park who were second and third placed after 150m.

China wins men's gymnastics
(China Daily, July 31)

LONDON - Chinese gymnasts cleared doubts that followed their sixth-place finish in the preliminary, winning the Olympic men's team gold in a dominant fashion on Monday. The Chinese pulled off a nearly perfect performance to garner 275.997 points, beating Japan's by 4.045 points.

Japan, initially placed in fourth place, picked the silver medal after winning an appeal against the pommel horse score on Kohei Uchimura. Host gymnasts dropped from second to third for bronze, Britain's first team gymnastics medal for a century.

China made a series of mistakes in the qualifying, but did nothing wrong in the final, which drew media suspicions that the defending champions had hidden their strength. "There is no hiding at all in the qualification," said Zou Kai, the triple gold medalist in the Beijing Olympics. "Who would like to stay back in the Olympic qualifying? If we do so, we lose chance in individual finals."

Mom and dad hope Jiao has a good run at the London Games

They didn't see their daughter on TV but were still excited enough to stay up all night to watch Friday's opening ceremony of the 2012 Games. Harbin, Helongjiang province, natives 47-year-old Jiao Chunsong and 46-year-old Liu Shuhua can't wait to see their daughter, nationally celebrated swimmer Jiao Liuyang, compete in the London Olympics.

"It begins again," Liu said. "The Games are just around the corner." Their 21-year-old daughter took silver in the women's 200m butterfly four years ago at the Beijing Olympics. She and her teammate Liu Zige broke the world record together, but Liu took the gold because she touched the wall first.

The father said he feels slight regret his daughter didn't get the gold, but it doesn't really bother him. "I didn't have to be modest," he said. "I believed my daughter would take first place before that match. She had the ability. At least the gold belongs to China." Jiao Liuyang is now a better athlete with a world title in the women's 200m butterfly she won last year in Shanghai.

Stars make themselves at home

Athletes find a comfortable village replete with food, facilities and lots of famous people

The Olympic Village is the ultimate place for "stargazing". You can follow Usain Bolt, the fastest man on the planet, as he walks out of the dining hall wearing brightly colored extra-large sunglasses, then encounter pole vault queen Elena Isinbayeva at the fitness center.

Then, you find star British diver Tom Daley learning to play the bongo drums with volunteer musicians in a grassy area after passing China's top swimmer, Sun Yang, while he is filming the sights of the central park. The presence of so many big names drew not only media attention during a Village tour on Thursday but also that of other athletes.

"The best thing about (living in the Village) is you can see a lot of famous athletes you've never seen before," Gonzalo Peillat, an Argentinean hockey player, told China Daily outside the main dining hall. "I am so excited. I met Bolt just now, and he looks so cool. I also saw Serena Williams last night. Hopefully, I can meet more."

Daley says pressure will be no problem
(China Daily/Agencies, July 30)

LONDON - Not for the first time, British diving posterboy Tom Daley disagreed on Friday with his Russian performance director Alexei Evangulov on handling the pressure of a home Olympics. This time, however, there was no ill-feeling between the pair.

Evangulov caused a stir before a test event in February when he said Daley was in danger of failing to achieve his potential and becoming the sport's answer to former tennis glamour girl Anna Kournikova. He also warned that the teenager's media appearances could sink his hopes. On Friday, full of praise, he assured reporters that Daley was perfectly prepared for the competition.

"There is no word pressure in our vocabulary. Responsibility, yes," he declared. Daley disproved that, having more problem answering a question from left-field about the importance of personal grooming than in locating the P word. "Pressure isn't a bad thing," grinned the 18-year-old whose face has become one of the most familiar to Britons in the run-up to the Games thanks to media exposure and advertising campaigns.

Clare Balding accused of calling Chinese swimmer a cheat

Did BBC presenter imply that 400m medley champion Ye Shiwen is on drugs?

LAST UPDATED AT 09:55 ON Mon 30 Jul 2012

THE BBC has not had the best of starts to the Olympics, and now presenter Clare Balding is in the firing line over remarks about young Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen, who set a new world record and smashed her personal best by five seconds on Sunday night as she took gold in the 400m individual medley.

Balding expressed astonishment after the 16-year-old swam the final 50m of the race in just 28.93 seconds, faster than Ryan Lochte managed in the men's race.

After the Chinese teenager's victory she asked former British Olympic swimmer Mark Foster: "How many questions will there be about somebody who can suddenly swim so much faster than she has ever swum before?"

Foster explained that young athletes can make sudden improvements and said: "When you are young you do some big best times... it can be done."

Despite his diplomatic answer many viewers felt Balding had delivered a loaded question, designed to imply that Ye's sudden improvement could be down to doping.

According to the Daily Mail the comment "provoked a storm among BBC viewers on Twitter, with many praising her for daring to even hint at the possibility of cheating, but many criticising her for tainting the Chinese swimmer's achievement and some even calling for her sacking".

The paper notes that China has already won more swimming medals than it did during the Beijing games and highlights concerns that "China's sudden resurgence is a throwback to the days of the 1994 Rome world championships, when its drug-powered women swept to 13 of the 16 available golds". It points out that another 16-year-old Chinese swimmer failed a drugs test in June.

The BBC, which was forced to apologise for its inept coverage of the men's cycling road race on Saturday, stood by Balding's comments.

"The Chinese swimmer had just knocked five seconds off her personal best to break a world record; in her role as a presenter it is Clare's job to ask the experts (in this case Mark Foster), how she managed to do it. There was absolutely no implication of doping," it said. ·

Wrong, there is nothing to get used to for things like this. This is pure prejuidice and racism.

Why was there no complaints or questions when Michael Phelps won his sensation campaigns during Athens and Beijing? We all (Chinese and westerners) cheered for his superhuman performance and personal achievement. Yet when the winner is no an westerner nor white, then it has to be something bad.

It is our silence that allows them to act in such arrogant way. In the heart of the matter, this is no different between these talks and the behaviour that the west displayed during the 2008 Beijing Olympic touch relay.

What we need to do is let they know that we will not tolerate these kind of behaviours any longer.

Chinese anti-doping official hits back at suspicions over swimmer
(Shanghai Daily, July 31)

LONDON, July 30 (Xinhua) -- It is unfair to point fingers at Chinese swimmers with doping allegations once they win medals in big events, a senior Chinese anti-doping official said here on Monday.

Sun Yang became the first Chinese man to win Olympic swimming gold medal with victory in the 400m freestyle, and Ye Shiwen captured the women's 400m individual medley title in a world record time of four minutes 28.43 seconds.

Ye's stunning performance raised some suspicions over whether Chinese swimmers turned to banned substances for success. Jiang Zhixue, the anti-doping chief of China's General Administration of Sport, said these suspicions were not justified.

China continues diving dominance, British water baby Daley misses medal
(Shanghai Daily, July 31)

LONDON, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese teenager divers twirled to victory in platform synchro at London Olympics on Monday while a flawed fourth dive killed the chances of British diving star Thomas Daley for an Olympic medal in front of home fans.

Monday has witnessed a nerve-jangling men's 10m platform synchro final in the diving pool. China's Cao Yuan and Zhang Yanquan had the same 56.4 points with British duo Daley and his partner Peter Waterfield in the initial dive. The British duo pulled out of the tie in their second move, a reverse dive in pike position.

Roared on by a capacity crowd including his mother on the tribune, Daley had perfect synchronicity with Waterfield in their third back three-and-a-half somersault in tuck position, after which they had a 2.4 points lead-off over Chinese competitors. However, disappointing errors in the fourth move of Daley's partner Peterfield dropped the British pair's advantage and cost them nearly 10 points behind Chinese.

Xue/Zhang find their groove and beat Swiss duo 2-1 at London Olympics beach volleyball
(Shanghai Daily, July 31)

LONDON, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese duo Xue Chen/Zhang Xi finally found their winning rhythm and hammerd Simone Kuhn/Nadine Zumkehr of Switzerland in three sets here on Monday to gain their first win at the women's beach volleyball preliminaries at the 2012 London Olympics.

As the second seed of the tournament, Xue and Zhang had been expected to top the Pool B with ease, but suffered a shocking 1-2 loss to Russian pair Anastasia Vasina/Anna Vozakova in the opener last Saturday.

They bounced back from the surprise defeat and clawed back their hope to advance into the last 16 with a 21-18, 16-21 and 15-8 victory over Kuhn/Zumkehr. "This is an important win for us, especially we lost the opener," said Xue, "Confidence comes back to us, we found ourselves on the court."

Ye, IOC hit back at British doping claims
(Shanghai Daily, July 31)

CHINESE swimming prodigy, 16-year-old Ye Shiwen, categorically denied doping after British media raised suspicions about her world record-breaking start to the London Olympics.

Ye shattered Stephanie Rice's mark in the women's 400m individual medley by more than a second, including an astonishing final lap which was faster than US winner Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps in the men's competition.
"Insane," said Rice. "I mean I didn't see it, I was way over and behind, so I didn't really see her coming home, but that split coming home was out of control."

With the swim, Ye took nearly seven seconds off her time at last year's world championships. And in yesterday's 200m medley heats, she clocked 2min 8.90sec - the quickest in the world this year. But the Zhejiang youngster, who announced herself on the global stage with the 200m medley world title last year, said there was nothing untoward.

Chinese shuttlers Chen & Li advances to last 16
(Shanghai Daily/Agencies, July 31)

ASIAN Games champion Chen Long of China banished a bad memory when he reached the last 16 in badminton by beating Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand 21-12, 21-17 at the London Games on Sunday. The third-ranked Chen lost in the first round in the same Wembley Arena at last year's world championships.

That was a surprise, and he was prepared for Boonsak in their group elimination match, though it took Chen almost an hour to put out last month's Singapore Open champion. In women's play, third-seeded Li Xuerui of China advanced with her second group win over Carolina Marin of Spain 21-13, 21-11. Li earned two days off before the last 16 begins. "I'll continue to practice a lot, rest a lot, and eat a lot of rice," Li said.

Former No. 1 Lee Hyun-il of South Korea, who was fourth at the Beijing Games, beat Rodrigo Pacheco Carillo of Peru in two games in the men's event. Sixth-seeded Sho Sasaki of Japan also won in two games, as did ninth-seeded Simon Santoso of Indonesia, on his 27th birthday. Santoso planned to celebrate only with a dinner with teammates.

So good at diving, "it's annoying"
(China Daily, July 31)

Nobody can figure out how to beat China in diving, but it's not for lack of trying. Journalists, coaches and foreign divers all put forth their opinions while China was busy working on sweeping the gold medals at the London Olympics. It might not happen this generation, but that doesn't mean it's not coming.

"I've followed diving for eight years. I think part of the obstacle for American and other athletes all over the world is not to be intimidated by Chinese divers," David Woods, a reporter for The Indianapolis Star, told China Daily.

"Before anyone can beat the Chinese divers, it's something they've got to believe, and destroy (the obstacle). I expect China will maintain its dominance for some time. But certainly, the US is trying to close the gap. With the help of Chinese coaches, they will catch up."

SWITZERLAND footballer Michel Morganella has been sent home from the Olympics after racially abusing South Korea's players on Twitter, team officials confirmed yesterday.

Morganella had directed an offensive jibe at South Korea's players after Switzerland's 2-1 defeat to the Asian giants on Sunday.

"Michel Morganella has discriminated against, insulted and violated the dignity of the South Korean football team, as well as the South Korean people," said Switzerland Olympic team chef de mission Gian Gilli.

Olympics: India fumes at Olympic ceremony intruder
(Channel News Asia, July 29)

NEW DELHI: India have protested to London Olympic organisers after a mysterious woman gatecrashed their squad at the opening ceremony, media reports said on Sunday.

The unidentified woman, dressed in a red top and blue pants, was seen walking alongside India's flag-bearer Sushil Kumar at Friday's ceremony even though she was not part of the contingent.

India's acting chef-de-mission Muralidharan Raja slammed the intrusion, but stopped short of calling it a security breach even though the woman was not wearing the customary identification badge.

Uchimura admits guilt over medal confusion
(Shanghai Daily/AFP, July 31)

KOHEI Uchimura expressed a measure of sympathy for Great Britain and Ukraine after a judging inquiry into his pommel horse routine gave Japan the silver medal in the men's Olympic gymnastics team final.

The Japanese superstar badly miscued his dismount from the pommel in the final rotation of yesterday's event at the North Greenwich Arena and was awarded a score of 13.466 points that left Japan in fourth place.

As Britain celebrated a shock silver medal and Ukraine toasted an apparent third-place finish, Japan submitted an appeal to the judges that brought proceedings to a confused and confusing standstill. The judges ultimately decided that Uchimura had not been given sufficient credit for his dismount and amended his score to 14.166, taking Japan up to second, dropping Britain to third, and leaving Ukraine empty-handed.

Wu Minxia: 3rd Olympic gold is a 'marvelous miracle'
(Want China Times/Xinhua, July 31)

Wu Minxia won her third consecutive Olympic gold medal in the 3 meters synchronized springboard on Sunday and after winning in Athens and Beijing alongside Guo Jingling. This time she came on top with a different partner, He Zi, following Guo's retirement.

Some divers may have lost form or struggled to build an understanding with a different partner, but in the case of Wu and He, she said, "We worked really well as a team. We are both Chinese, so we work together." "Whoever my partner is, we are always to work well," she said.

Wu is be considered a veteran in diving, a sport dominated by young athletes, but the 26-year-old said she has no thought of retirement for the moment. "I've never thought about whether my time as a diver is almost over," she commented, before adding. "I know my ability and capabilities and I want to work and train hard to continue."

Olympic preview on Day Four: Women vie to continue China gold rush
(China Daily, July 31)

Fans of team China will be hoping the women will be able to repeat the success of their male counterparts as they vie for Tuesday's gold medals in London. Chen Ruolin and Wang Hao will look to emulate Monday's success of Cao Yuan and Zhang Yanquan and take home the gold in the women's synchronized 10m platform at 10 pm.

Chen, 19 from Jiangsu province, is the leading favorite for the event after taking the top spot at the 2008 Beijing Games, the World Championships in 2011, Asian Games in 2010 and the World Series in 2012. Next, the focus will turn to gymnastics where China's male team won gold on Monday night.

Deng Linlin, He Kexin, Huang Qiushuang, Sui Lu and Yao Jinnan will compete in the China women's gymnastics team artistic final at the North Greenwich Arena at 11:30 pm. Earlier in the day, Xu Lili, from Shandong province will compete against Brazil's Mariana Silva in a five minute whirlwind of combat in the first stages of the women's 63kg judo at the ExCel competition venue at 4:51 pm.

Things are hard — beds, especially
(China Daily, July 27)

Everything is just right, except for the size of the beds. Accommodating about 16,000 people is clearly a huge project, and there's no way to make everybody happy. So it's no surprise athletes have some complaints about the Olympic Village.

The biggest seem to be that the rooms are smaller than those in previous Games, and the beds are too short for taller men. "The only (negative) thing I can say is the bed is too small — not very comfortable," said Belgian road cyclist Tom Boonen, who stands 1.92 meters.

"It's actually OK, but it would be better if it could be a little bigger." Some smaller athletes echoed Boonen's complaint. Chinese men's boxer Liu Qiang, who is 1.75 meters tall and will fight in the 60kg class, also hoped for bigger beds.

Women's basketball beats Croatia for 2nd win in London
(China Daily, July 30)

LONDON - Center Chen Nan scored 28 points to lead China to an 83-58 win over Croatia for the second victory of the women's basketball competition at the London Olympic Games on Monday.

China, which finished fourth in the Beijing 2008, are in the driving seat to take on Angola and Turkey in the preliminary round before they face the mighty United States, which they never beat at the Olympics. Teammate Miao Lijie chipped in 17 points and dished out 10 assists, in addition to five rebounds, in China's victory.

"We took the game really serious and that's why we beat them by a big margin. I think the United States were not taking the first game serious, so they won it little," Miao talked about the 25-point winning margin, which is same as the victory of the US against Croatia, 81-56 on Saturday.

Silver and bronze are golden too
(China Daily, July 31)

Athletes deserve support regardless of medal tally, proud sports fans say

Despite winning silver in the men's 56kg weightlifting event at the Olympic Games, Wu Jingbiao, Chinese double world champion, apologized profusely for, as he put it, letting down his fans and his country in an interview with China Central Television on Monday.

"I feel terribly guilty for disappointing my country, the Chinese weightlifting team and all the people who supported me," he said fighting the tears in front of the camera. "I really wanted to be the best but I didn't make it," he said. "I am sorry!" The CCTV reporter hugged Wu, 23, and told him that it was a proud achievement to win the silver medal and he would have another opportunity.

After all, the Olympic maxim states that it is not the winning but the taking part that counts. Back in China, public opinion and online comments overwhelmingly supported Wu and other Chinese athletes who failed to get gold. The obsession for Olympic gold should not lessen the remarkable feat of getting an Olympic medal of whatever hue, they said.

Lord Moynihan: "It's regrettable that there is so much speculation out there in the press"

Teenage Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen is not a drug cheat, the British Olympic Association's chairman has said, after a US coach cast doubt on her world record-breaking swim.
Lord Colin Moynihan said Ye, 16, had passed drug tests, was "clean" and deserved recognition for her talent.
Ye smashed her personal best by at least five seconds in the 400m Medley.
Senior US coach John Leonard said her performance was disturbing and hinted that doping could have been involved.

High on the list of technologies that delivered such a memorable and moving London 2012 opening ceremony were the ‘pixels’ that turned every seat in the Olympic Stadium into part of a giant video screen. These were used for colour effects – such as a Union Flag when the Queen and James Bond apparently parachuted into the stadium; for video – including rippling effects during a section related to the sea; and animated graphics, such as displaying song lyrics.

Each seat was equipped with a tablet containing a 3x3 array of LEDs. These – all 70,500 of them – were manufactured by Tait Technologies, using the Barco FLX platform. Fitted with handles, the tablets could be removed from their holders and held by hand – as happened during a section of audience participation paddles were waved to produce a shimmering effect.

The tablets measure 134mm square, and the pixel pitch is 50mm. Each pixel is individually programmable. The viewing angles are 180º both horizontally and vertically.

Although the pixel tablet is part of Tait’s rental inventory, the set-up at the Olympic Stadium, for the eight-week duration of the Olympics and Paralympics, was treated as a permanent installation. Some 370km of cabling were installed by a local ten-person crew over five weeks. In all, the system installation took ten weeks with five technicians and six local crew members.

China guaranteed one more gold
(London 2012 Website, July 31)

Li Xiaoxia guaranteed China more medal success on Day 4, while in the men's competition Taiwan's Chuang Chih-Yuan admitted he had mixed emotions after making progress. Li set up a final with compatriot Ding Ning in the women's Singles.

The nation has thus far claimed more top prizes than anyone else at the Games, with Table Tennis always likely to add to their haul. Some expect they will claim the four golds available - something that looks all the more realistic now.

Much like her compatriot Ding, Li has encountered few problems in reaching Wednesday's final and had too much for Japan's Kasumi Ishikawa. It means whatever happens China will continue their astonishing record of claiming every women's Singles medal since the sport was added to the Olympics schedule at Seoul 1988.

That went to China's world number nine Lei, who came from 13-12 down to win 15-13 after a day of shock results which included Britain's medal hope Richard Kruse heavily losing his first contest.

Men's basketball suffers 2nd loss after rout to Russia
(China Daily, July 31)

LONDON - Russia managed a 73-54 win over China though they were not playing an impressive offensive game Tuesday in the preliminary round of the men's basketball competition at the London 2012. Andrei Kirelenko scored 16 points to lead the Russians when the team shot only 4-out-of-17 from behind the arc.

"We didn't win the game by offense, we won it by defence. Our defence took China out of their usual game," Russia's American coach David Blatt said. "China are deeper, have more options (on rotation) and more experiences at such a high-level competition. They challenged us on offence and defence. Anyone who will play China down the string will find it's not an easy game," he added.

Coming from a 95-75 opening win over Britain when Kirelenko scored 35 points, Russia confronted solid defence in the early game on Tuesday as they scored just 20 points in each of the first two quarters.

London Games see third doping case in two days
(China Daily, July 30)

LONDON - Two athletes saw their Olympic hopes cut short on Sunday after being suspended from the London 2012 Games for using banned performance-enhancing drugs, taking the tally of doping offenders after two days of competition to three.

With the International Olympic Committee eager to root out doping at the Games, testers have been out in force, conducting random and target testing for months to ensure the July 27-Aug 12 event will not be tarnished by any high profile cases.

St Kitts and Nevis sprinter Tameka Williams became the latest casualty on Sunday after admitting to team officials she had used a banned substance and being sent home days before she was due to compete.

S. Korean coach blasts at Chinese badminton players' dubious loss
(Shanghai Daily/Xinhua, Aug. 1)

LONDON, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese badminton players Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli lost a women's doubles match in a suspicious way at the Wembley Arena on Tuesday evening, causing an angry outcry from a South Korean coach and spectators.

The dubious loss kept the Chinese duo from meeting their equally strong compatriots earlier. Kim Moon-Soo, a South Korean coach, said: "There is nothing much to say. I think the Chinese violated the Olympic spirit because they started missing their serves."

Yu and Wang looked sluggish throughout the game, while their South Korean rivals - Jung Kyung-Eun and Kim Ha-Na, were not as aggressive as usual. In the end, the South Koreans won 21-14 and 21-11. The umpire called a halt in the middle of the first set following a series of serves hit into the net by both sides and reminded the pairs to take the game seriously. But the situation didn't seem to change.

China launches probe into dubious badminton loss
(Shanghai Daily, Aug. 1)

THE Chinese sports delegation will launch a probe into allegations that shuttlers Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli lost a women's doubles match yesterday in order to secure a more favorable draw in the knockout rounds.

An investigation team has been set up to look into the alleged scandal, the spokesperson of the Chinese sports delegation to London Olympic Games said today. Chinese shuttlers Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli lost in a suspicious way in women's doubles yesterday evening at the Wembley Arena, which was hissed and booed by the crowd watching the competition.

The match started with the pair apparently out of form. Their rivals, Jung Kyung Eun and Kim Ha Na from South Korea didn't appear to be as aggressive as usual, but managed to score at least and won 21-14 and 21-11.

Gold medal diver Wang: At times it seemed a long way away
(Shanghai Daily, Aug. 1)

CHINESE diver Wang Hao explained that she had been forced to make a huge effort before being able to climb onto the podium in the London Olympic Aquatic Arena on Tuesday to receive a gold medal.

Wang and her partner Chen Roulin won China's third gold medal in diving in the three events held so far in London, finishing well ahead of Mexican paring of Paula Espinosa and Alejandra Orozco and the Canadians Meghan Benafeito and Roseline Filion.

Wang and Chen have been dominant in the event for the past two years, but Wang explained that it had not come easy for her. "I have waited a long time for this," she admitted. "The past four years saw me suffer a series of knee injuries and also an eye problem and it was difficult for me to get back to my top fitness," she said.

Le Clos amazed to have taken gold ahead of Phelps
(Shanghai Daily/Xinhua, Aug. 1)

LONDON, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Chad le Clos could hardly believe he had won and Olympic gold medal in the 200 meters butterfly and beaten the great Michael Phelps to do so.

Phelps had looked certain to win the race, only for Le Clos to get the first touch on the wall and beat the American by 0.05 of a second.

The silver medal Phelps won was the 18th Olympic medal of his career and he would later go on to win a record breaking 19th Olympic medal, but that was taking none of the sheen off Le Clos' triumph.

Phelps misses out gold, but claims record
(Shanghai Daily, Aug. 1)

SOUTH African Chad le Cos won the gold medal, but Michael Phelps made Olympic history in the Aquatic center at the London Olympic Games on Tuesday night.

Le Clos touched home a fraction ahead of Phelps in the final moment of the men's 200 meter butterfly, when it looked as if the American was about to claim his 15th gold medal. Phelps appeared to miss his finish and Le Clos got the vital touch with his fingertips, even though he had seemed destined to finish second.

The South African's triumph means Phelps missed out on the chance to become the first male swimmer to win the same event in three separate Olympics, but Phelps still wrote his name into the Olympic record books as he claimed the 18th medal of his career.

Mexico's Olympic diver retires after winning silver
(Shanghai Daily/Xinhua, Aug. 1)

LONDON, July 31 (Xinhua) -- After winning a silver medal in women's 10-meter synchronized diving, Mexico's reigning queen of the diving board Paola Espinosa said Tuesday she was passing on her crown to partner Alejandra Orozco so she could continue her legacy.

London 2012 will be her last Olympic Games, Espinosa, 26, told Xinhua, adding the talented Orozco, 15, was her clear successor. "I have always said she is very talented, that she should succeed me as (Mexico's lead) diver. I always tell her she is the best and I know she will be," said Espinosa.

She said she was very excited to have won the silver medal at the games, and added "I am happy I won the medal with my great friend Alejandra." Espinosa has become something of a historic figure for Mexico as the only Mexican woman ever to win two medals in diving. She won her first at Beijing 2008, with diving partner Tatiana Ortiz.

Australia struggling with its act in London
(Shanghai Daily/Agencies, Aug. 1)

THE team from Down Under has been downright dreadful so far at the London Games. OK, it's still early - just 39 of 302 medals had been presented as of early yesterday - but the Australian team's stated aim of being in the top five in both the gold and overall medal standings was looking seriously shaky, mostly because of the sinking performance of its usually strong swim team.

At this stage, Australia has just one gold, its women's 4x100-meter relay team in swimming, along with two silvers and a bronze overall. That puts it in 10th place in the gold standings and equal eighth overall.

The biggest disappointment was in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay on Sunday. Australia was heavily favored to win but finished in the fourth place after a mediocre lead leg by James "The Missile" Magnussen.

Eight charged over 'throwing' badminton matches
(Shanghai Daily/AFP, Aug. 1)

THE Olympic badminton tournament was thrown into chaos today when eight women players were charged with trying to "throw" matches to secure an easier draw in the next round.

Four pairs in the women's doubles competition - one from China, one from Indonesia and two from South Korea - were booed off court by irate spectators at London's Wembley Arena yesterday.

The players in two matches had appeared to deliberately serve into the net to concede points, hit the shuttlecock out of play, or waste time. They could be disciplined after the Badminton World Federation (BWF) charged them with "not using one's best efforts to win a match" and "conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport".

Sun leads China for historic relay medal
(China Daily, Aug. 1)

This is the first time that Chinese swimmers were qualified into relay races at Olympic Games. A bronze medal in men's 4X200 freestyle relay has already been a great breakthrough for them.

In the race which was previously dominated by western powers, Olympic champion Sun Yang spearheaded team China, which also features Hao Yun, Li Yunqi and Jiang Haiqi, to fly over powerhouse Germany led by Olympic champion and world record holder Paul Biedermann.

Team United States, with overwhelming Olympic champions Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte ensure its first and last laps, sprinted home first in 6:59.70. Silver went to team France, featuring Olympic champion Yannick Agnel as the last lap, in 7:02.77. Chinese swimmers posted 7:06.30 for the bronze medal.

Post a comment (http://voices.yahoo.com/michael-phelps-using-hyperbaric-chamber-2012-olympic-10944446.html#new_comment_area)

Michael Phelps (http://voices.yahoo.com/topic/102927/michael_phelps.html) is a 16-time Olympic medalist in swimming, but he isn't getting any younger. In his effort to train for what he says will be his final Olympics in London, he is looking for every advantage he can get for his training.
After years of training, he has learned that when he trains at high altitude, he bounces back from workouts at a much faster pace. So, instead of moving his training to a high altitude location, Phelps has managed to bring the high altitude to him.
The use of hyperbaric chambers is becoming more widely used for various medical conditions as well as by athletes in training. They have even become very popular among players in the NFL. However, there are two different types of treatment that very often get confused.
Hyperbaric Therapy
For athletes, oxygen is an essential component for the muscles. Oxygen combines with pyruvic acid in the body to create adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, which is essential for muscle energy. If there is not enough oxygen present to combine with the pyruvic acid, it becomes lactic acid. Unfortunately, during intense exercise, the body is not able to remove this lactic acid quick enough and it collects in the muscle tissue. This collection can lead to muscle fatigue.
By using hyperbaric oxygen therapy (http://www.hypo2.net/html/athletes.html#endurance), the athlete provides the body with the necessary amount of oxygen to combine with the pyruvic acid as well as flush out the lactic acid. This reduces the occurrences of muscle fatigue.
Hypobaric Therapy
However, in high altitude, the level of oxygen is lower. When athletes train at higher elevations, the body becomes stressed from a lower amount of oxygen. In response to this stress, the body produces more red blood cells. This increase in blood cell production then increases the amount of red blood cells in the body. When the athlete then returns to lower altitude conditions, the body is then able to function for longer because of the increased oxygen being transported throughout the body.
In the case of Phelps, he has been using a personal hypobaric chamber (http://hyperbaricoptions.com/education/hyperbaric-vs-high_altitude_training.php) for sleep. He is currently sleeping every night at an altitude level of 8,000 feet (http://sports.yahoo.com/top/news;_ylt=AliJi25GJZocmHGTHno8KlbNycIF?slug=ap-phelps-hyperbaricchamber) and has been doing so for almost a year. This has boosted his body's ability to produce red blood cells and allow him to perform better and heal quicker after intense training.
This may sound very similar to blood doping (the process where athletes use medication or blood procedures to increase the red blood cells), the World Anti-Doping Agency ruled in 2006 that these chambers do enhance performance and violate the spirit of the sport. However, they did not include it in their list of banned substances so it is currently legal for athletes to use. Do you think this type of treatment should be allowed?

But at the time when Michael Phelps won 7 Gold medals in Beijing, not a single western media doubted about his achievement and did't even bother mentioning the possibility that he was doping. (China Daily, Aug. 2)

LONDON - Eight women's badminton players were disqualified by the sport's governing body on Wednesday for trying to lose on purpose to secure favorable draw, while the hosts finally claimed their first gold medals at the London Games after four days of agonizing wait.

The four doubles pairs - one from China, one from Indonesia and two from South Korea - were charged by the Badminton World Federation with "not using one's best efforts to win a match" and "conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport."

South Korea and Indonesia appealed the disqualification, but the BWF rejected the South Korean appeal and the Indonesia challenge was withdrawn. China accepted the federation's decision. "The behavior by Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli on court violated the Olympics ideal and the spirit of fair play. The Chinese delegation feels distressed over this matter," the Chinese Olympic delegation said in a statement.

China amasses third diving gold
(China Daily, Aug. 1)

LONDON - Chinese duo Chen Ruolin and Wang Hao captured gold in women's 10m platform synchronized diving at London Olympics on Tuesday, adding the third gold to the diving powerhouse.

Chen and Wang, winner of the 2011 FINA World Championships, amassed 368.40 points after their five precise dives, some 25 points clear off silver medallists Mexican star Paola Espinosa Sanchez and her new partner Alejandra Orozco Loza in 343.32. The bronze medal went to Canadian pair Roseline Filion and Meaghan Benfeito who collected 337.62 points.

Five confident and precise dives from the Chinese duo rewarded them the expected victory. They seemed extremely calm even after they saw their names atop the scoreboard after the last dive, which they achieved 88.32 points including a 10.

China wins men's synchro 3m springboard gold
(China Daily, Aug. 2)

LONDON -- China's world champion Qin Kai and Luo Yutong asserted dominance in men's 3m springboard synchro final at London Olympics on Wednesday, adding the fourth diving gold to powerhouse China. Qin and Luo, winners of the 2011 FINA World Championships, led all the way in the final and compiled 477.00 points to take the gold.

Russian duo Llya Zakharov and Evgeny Kuznetsov, world silver medallists and winners of the Moscow leg of the 2012 World Series, settled for silver in 459.63. The bronze medal went to American duo Kristian Ipsen and Troy Dumais who collected 446.70 points.

Qin and Luo, also champions of the World Cup in the same pool earlier this year, led the field from their first dive and expanded the gap step by step. They sealed victory after their fourth dive - an inward three-and-a-half somersault in tuck position, moving 27 points clear off closest chasers

LONDON -- China's world champion Jiao Liuyang posted super-fast final 50m sprint to capture gold medal in women's 200m butterfly at London Olympics on Wednesday.

Jiao, champion at the Shanghai World Championships last year, was the quickest off starting block. She maintained her strengthen in the first 50m, hanging on to let defending champion Liu Zige to lead the field.

After a fifth position after the first half of the race, Jiao caught on and seized the second place behind Spanish swimmer Mireia Belmonte Garcia before the last lap.

Li Na is not enjoying her summer in Britain
(China Daily, Aug. 2)

China has a few notable international stars who are able to draw the global limelight at the London Olympic Games. Yi Jianlian, who plies his trade in the NBA, is battling it out with the national basketball team. Sun Yang and Ye Shiwen have risen to superstar status in the swimming pool and 110m hurdler Liu Xiang is gearing up for next week's track and field competition.

But as their stars continue to rise, 2011 French Open champion Li Na's appears to be sinking as she appeared to be totally lost at the All-England Club in Wimbledon. Her aura continues to diminish after her Olympic journey ended in disastrous style.

She's hoping a new coach will help her turn things around. Li, who lost her first-round singles match to Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia on Saturday, also fell early in the doubles competition with compatriot Zhang Shuai on Tuesday as they crashed 6-3, 6-1 to Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic in the last 16.

A little bit of China in everyone
(China Daily, Aug. 2)

Many other countries' rosters dotted with former national-team players. They might be wearing other nations' flags, but half the 16 players in the women's singles table tennis tournament at the London Olympics are former Chinese national or provincial team members.

Most hit a wall in their progress in China and found homes on teams that gave them a clearer path the Olympics. One problem: Are they blocking the development of young players on their new teams?

Maybe. Maybe not. Donald Parker was head coach of England's squad at three Olympics, from 1988-96. "It's great to have fantastic players from abroad so the young guns can learn from them," he told China Daily on Monday.

Olympic spirit matters
(China Daily, Aug. 2)

To win, or not to win, that should never be the question at the Olympic Games. Honor and dishonor medals do not determine, for that is not the spirit of sports. True, Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of modern Olympics, made "Faster, Higher, Stronger" the motto of the Games. But lest we forget, his other motto is: "The most important thing is not to win but to take part!"

Chinese female weightlifter Zhou Jun failed to hoist 95 kg in three snatch attempts in the 53 kg category at the London Games on Sunday, drawing local media criticism. And though a paper based in Yunnan province published an apology on its front page for calling Zhou's loss a dishonor, the incident shows how wrong some Chinese are about the spirit of the Games.

This wrong notion afflicts athletes too. Another Chinese weightlifter, Wu Jingbiao, broke down after failing to win gold and told a reporter that he apologizes to the motherland, the weightlifting team and everyone who backed him to win. This shows that even some athletes, especially gold medal hopefuls, are obsessed with winning, and are under heavy pressure from their teams, coaches and spectators.

Yeah! She won
(China Daily, Aug. 2)

Swimming prodigy smiles in the face of adversity as world hails a new star

Olympic champions have to have guts, determination, belief and grace under pressure, qualities that are also needed to face the slings and arrows of false accusations. Swimming prodigy Ye Shiwen has these qualities in abundance.

Ye, 16, should be basking in triumph as China's first double gold medalist swimmer at an Olympics following sensational victories in both the 200- and 400-meter individual medleys. Instead, she has had to encounter snide comments and allegations in the wake of her success.

Ye can handle both the bouquets and brickbats and will not let any unfounded allegations dampen her justifiable pride. Back home, Ye has won the hearts of millions with her stunning performance and ready smile. On weibo, people pointed out that her name suits her very well: "Yeah, she won".

London fans finally warming up to Games
by Cecily Liu
(China Daily, Aug. 2)

Sitting among tens of thousands of Britons to watch the men's gymnastics team finals on Wednesday was an ecstatic experience. Claps and cheers for three hours straight almost deafened me .And crowds waving the Union Jack flag as they walked out of the O2 arena made my heart jump with a feeling of festivity.

"Is this the same crowd that moaned and whined about the Olympics just a few weeks earlier?" I asked myself. I still vividly remember the experience of talking to grumpy grandmothers, who dislike crowds, bankers going on holiday to escape the "mess" and disgruntled commuters wishing the Games were over.

Worse still, the recent news that security contractor 4GS was unable to find enough troops, that the newly opened Emirates Cable Car left tourists suspended in the air for 40 minutes and that transport workers were threatening strikes cast a shadow over the big party. That's not to mention the unexplained bad weather this year, which some say are creating "the world's wettest Olympics".

China head coach apologizes for badminton farce
(China Daily, Aug. 2)

LONDON - Chinese badminton head coach Li Yongbo apologized on Wednesday for a badminton scandal in which two of his players were disqualified for throwing a match.

"As head coach, I owe the supporters of Chinese badminton and the Chinese TV audiences an apology," said Li. "Chinese players failed to demonstrate the fine tradition and fighting spirit of the national team." "It's me to blame," he added.

The Badminton World Federation kicked out eight women's doubles players for trying to throw Tuesday's matches to have an easier draw in next round. Top seeds and world champions Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang from China were among the four pairs expelled. The other disqualified players were Jung Kyun-Eun, Kim Ha-Na, Ha Jung-Eun and Kim Min-Jung, all of South Korea, and Meiliana Jauhari and Greysia Polii from Indonesia.

65% of London Games products made in China
(China Daily, Aug. 1)

If you are a big fan of collecting Olympic products, now give some credit to "made in China"

Chen Jiemin, chairman of Dongguan Zhanhong Weaving String Co Ltd, watched with pride on TV the tens of thousands of London Olympics athletes and workers wearing lanyards made by his company.

Zhanhong Weaving, one of the many licensed Chinese manufacturers for the current Olympics, has shipped 700,000 lanyards to London. "Small and peripheral as it seems, even a single lanyard can represent the global image of 'made in China', so its quality is the first thing I care about," Chen said.

About 65 percent of the London Olympic Games' licensed products, including badges, key chains, and official mascots Wenlock and Mandeville, come from the world's second-largest economy, according to Xinhua.net.

The Olympics That I Know
http://opinion.m4.cn/2012-07/1174993.shtml

I am an editor with the Olympics reporting team at Sina.com. I am lucky to be reporting on the Olympics for Sina.com. I am presently responsible for the handling of news photos, headlines as well as the early Olympics reports. Therefore, I am more or less familiar with every athlete. I also have information from the frontlines. The following is an account of the London Olympics that I know about (I went to sleep at 9am today and I got up at 12:30pm. I hope I won't drop dead suddenly.)

Let me tell you a story about China. The story is very simple: Two foreigners lost their bicycles in Wuhan city, and the police found the lost bicycles for them.

Immediately, people started to whine on the Internet. "Oh, how come the police didn't help me when I lost my bicycle? If I lose my bicycle again, I am going to identify myself to the police as a foreign national." Then the matter gets elevated to nationalism: What happens and what cannot happen to a people with such an inferior complex?

Yao Ming is working as a CCTV commentator. He went to London. At his hotel, the bathroom door is 2.2 meters high, so that Yao Ming has to bend down each time that he goes in to use the bathroom. Yao Ming did not say anything. But the British people who has an "inferiority complex" took the initiative to rip away the bathroom door and raised the height of the entrance. They did so in order to keep Yao Ming staying at this hotel.

Ha ha (light laughter), so will the angry young men and public intellectuals immediately reverse their tune and praise London as a city of gentlemen?

Here is another story. There is a powerful sporting nation at the London Olympics. Their athletes are not housed in the Olympic Village. Instead, the athletes, officials and associates stay on a luxury cruise ship. Wow, and they are spending the taxpayers' money!

Unfortunately, that nation is not China, so that the Chinese angry young men and public intellectuals do not have the chance to curse their government and nation. That nation happens to be Germany, whom you all regard as "prudent".

Ha ha ha, you say all the time that the Germans are prudent. How many Germans have you actually met? Do you think that the Germans are produced by machines? Do you think that every German has the same personality?

But the comments for this story are: "Oh! What class! Oh! Germany is so wealthy! Oh, the Germans are so awesome!"

What? How come you are not saying that this was wasting taxpayers' money? Where did all the Chinese angry young men and public intellectuals go? Please come and see what your masters are up to! The European Union is in the midst of an economic crisis!

Next let me show you this microblog post, wherein all the hardworking Chinese athletes are branded Chinese traitors with the exception of those who won gold medals.

[Yi Tian V: The gold medals have nothing to do with me. I feel absolutely no honor or pride. Of course, if you feel something about them, then I admire you!
Comment: With so much taxpayers' money spent, China should sweep all the gold medals. If they don't, then they are derelict in their duties and they are all Chinese traitors!]

They said that Yu Dan only got a third place. Therefore CCTV ignored her because they are only interested in good news. Thus, no reporters interviewed her and she departed quietly alone. Then they began saying that only gold medals count and human rights are not respected.

Ha ha, how do you know that?

When the competition ended, CCTV began by interviewing the gold medalist Yi Shiling. That is for sure. Shouldn't they interview the winner first? Then CCTV broadcast that interview. But CCTV cannot interview every athlete and they cannot air every interview that they taped. If they broadcast every interview, the Olympics coverage would be one very long press conference. Yu Dan did not leave. She was interviewed by many Chinese media outlets. Sina.com used three of those media reports -- one was a press release, one was a personal interview, and one was an interview with Yu Dan's coach.

The Chinese angry young men and public intellectuals may still insist that there was a difference, because Yi Shiling received better treatment than Yu Dan in that she got air time but Yu Dan did not!

Ha ha, let me ask you: Do the American media treat Kobe Bryant and Lebron James the same way that they treat the American table tennis players? Are American table tennis players on air all the time?

Here is another big story. The South Korean swimmer Park Tae-Hwan was disqualified during the qualifying race. The South Korean media threw a fit. They said first that Park Tae-Hwan was wrongfully disqualified. Then they reviewed the videotape which seemed to show an infraction. So they said that Park Tae-Hwan slipped but did not gain an advantage. Even Park Tae-Hwan's father came out and ask for a re-match. Fuck, do you think that this is a television serial drama which can be excised and re-filmed?

Even more absurd things happened: The South Korean media said that the judge who was monitoring Park Tae-Hwan was Chinese and he disqualified Park Tae-Hwan (so that the Chinese swimmer Sun Yang can win) ... fuck, such shamelessness ...

There were two Chinese judges at the swimming center. One was working on women's swimming, and the other was working on individual medleys. What the fuck has that to do with men's free-style swimming?

The frontline reporters immediately investigated the situation. The judge monitoring Park Tae-Hwan was American. Did the Chinese buy off that American?

Ultimately, the South Korean delegation pleaded repeatedly until the International Swimming Federation (FINA) reversed the judge's ruling ... this was the first reversal by FINA in more than twenty years ... the South Koreans are good with their public relations.

Immediately the South Korean media reversed their stance. They said, "Oh, we are sorry to have wrongfully blamed a Chinese judge." They boasted that Park Tae-Hwan would surely be the champion after this. They even conducted a public opinion poll, in which 94% of South Koreans said that Park Tae-Hwan will win ... if the Olympics depend on public opinion, then China will surely sweep all the gold medals.

Everybody knows what happened afterwards. South Korea had its face slapped swollen ... of course, it may have lost its face.

Finally I have to say that our media respect every athlete. The athletes are the symbols of our nation. For example, Pang Wei finished fourth in the Men's 10 Meter Air Pistol competition. He was interviewed by CCTV afterwards, and we reported on him with many photos and videos. But time and space are limited, and we cannot spent so much effort on each and every athlete. But this should not be an excuse for the Chinese angry young people and public intellectuals to spout their criticisms.

Nowadays, is it a quick way to gain fame by challenging the lower limits of intelligence, manufacturing rumors and cursing indiscriminately? Does this make you a knowledgeable and important opinion leader? Does this show that you have more learning, democracy and freedom?

Americans nail down rich nerd demographic
(China Daily, Aug. 2)

The United States table tennis team might not be winning all its matches, but it's definitely winning some big fans. Former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates was on hand when Ariel Hsing of the US lost to China's Li Xiaoxia on Monday in the third round at the London Olympics.

With all four members of the team being of Chinese descent, the team has also become a topic of conversation among fans and the media in China. Only Hsing made it as far as the third round. "She's gotten herself up to top level and to do that at 16 (years old) means she's got the potential to be as good as anyone," Gates said.

"I've known her for seven years, and she was looking forward to getting into the Olympics, she was very excited about that. Getting through to the third round and just continuing improving - she's great." Though they all grew up in the US, the players' heroes are Chinese stars. Even without a medal, the young team provides some hope the US might become a contender in the not-too-distant future.

LONDON - Yang Xiuli looks to become the most successful judoka in women's -78kg judo at the Olympic Games when she starts her title defence on Thursday here.

It will be bumpy for Yang on her way to be the first woman to win this event twice at the Olympics as Yoko Tanabe of Japan by far is the only athlete to have two medals - both silver - in this category.

Yang, 29, could meet Paris world champion Audrey Tcheumeo of France and world championship runner-up Akari Ogata of Japan, all drawn into the lower half of the pool.

Day 6 crucial for Olympic medal lead
(China Daily, Aug. 2)

Day 6 of the London Olympics will prove crucial for China to maintain their lead on the medal league table with 54 up for grabs in 18 events. The nation has always dominated Olympic table tennis (41 medals) and the men’s singles at 5pm could prove an early omen for Team China.

Wang Hao, who won silver in last two Olympic Games will likely face No. 1-seeded Zhang Jike in the final if they both win their semifinal bouts against Dimitrij Ovtcharov of Germany and Chuang Chih-yuan of Taiwan.

Just an hour earlier Li Jun will vie for a place in the men’s double tap shooting final during the qualifiers at the Royal Artillery Barracks. Chen Ming, 26, from Jilin province will also take on Khatuna Lorig in the women’s individual archery qualifiers. China will also compete for gold in the men’s lightweight four rowing event at Eton Dorney at 5pm.

Great big hole in the middle exposed
(China Daily, Aug. 3)

Yao Ming was right to be worried.

The retired NBA center, now serving as a TV commentator at the London Games, voiced his concern about China's lack of dominance in the paint before the team's game against Australia on Thursday. Sure enough, China was completely overwhelmed in the middle, losing 81-61 and casting serious doubt on its ability to advance to the final eight.

China was outscored 30-13 in the paint and out-rebounded 51-36. "Yes, we miss Yao Ming," said head coach Bob Donewald Jr. "We need more different styles of players. But we have to accept the reality and hopefully we can have more guys on this team come up to help Yi (Jianlian)." Yi, now the only Chinese player in the NBA, was double-teamed constantly, scoring only 13 points, while fellow big men Wang Zhizhi and Zhang Zhaoxu combined for just three.

Australian power forward David Andersen - Yao's former teammate with the Houston Rockets, incidentally - had 17 points and seven rebounds. "Yi had a great game and he gave what he could against such physical opponents. Wang tried to give him some help, but he just could not get the ball," Donewald said.

Phelps wins 20th medal, US levels China
(China Daily, Aug. 3)

LONDON - American superstar Michael Phelps edged arch-rival Ryan Lochte to grab his first individual gold medal of the London Games and 20th career medal on Thursday as the United States drew level with China in the race to win the most gold medals.

Having already established himself the most decorated Olympian of all time after the US men's 4x200m freestyle relay victory on Tuesday, Phelps' legend grew even greater as he clocked a fastest time of 1:54.27 in the 200m individual medley final. Lochte finished second in 1:54.90, while Lazlo Cseh of Hungary touched the wall third.

The win means Phelps has now won an unprecedented total of 20 Olympic medals, of which 16 are gold medals. He is also the first swimmer to win the same individual event in three straight games.
"To be able to win the gold medal and repeat three times is something pretty special," said the 27-year-old Phelps. Earlier, Lochte was subdued in the 200m backstroke final, which was won by fellow American Tyler Clary.

Times are changing, and so are the media
(China Daily, Aug. 3)

It's not only Olympic athletes who try to scale new heights - so do China's media. In the social media age, Chinese journalists pursue the Olympic spirit of "higher, faster and stronger". Every day, I read Sina Weibo, China's popular Twitter-like micro-blogging service, and find Chinese media - news agencies, national and regional newspapers, radio and websites - are very timely in updating news and information about the Games.

Amid fierce competition, powerful Chinese portals like Sina and Tencent strive to coax famous sportspeople and those overseeing the event to use social networks to communicate with legions of netizens. I noticed swimmer Sun Yang has 9 million Sina Weibo followers.

As Chinese media swarm into London to cover the Olympic Games, journalists work hard to grab every opportunity and keep up with the pace of the world's largest sports extravaganza. Every time I attend the Olympic news conferences in London, I can see Chinese journalists posting short stories or pictures on weibo using smart phones, and there's a real undercurrent of excitement.

Australia beat China in men's basketball Group B
(China Daily, Aug. 2)

LONDON - China lost their third straight match in the men's basketball tournament, falling to Australia 81-61 on Thursday when they saw hopes of next stage diminishing at the 2012 London Olympic Games. China had to win both of the last two matches in the preliminary round when they face Brazil and the hosts Britain to take a berth in the knock-out round.

Former center Yao Ming, who is invited as a commentator by the Chinese Central Television, said, "Australia is a better team, physically and technically. The Chinese team has tried the best. Wang Shipeng shot really well, but was not well enough to save the game."

Guard Wang Shipeng buried seven 3-pointers and scored a game-high 21 points for China, but the rest of the team shot poorly in the field under the pressure of suffocating defence. "I made some shots in the first half when the offence ran smoothly. But in the second half, their defence cut down our connection. I cannot do it again without the support from big guys inside the paint," Wang said.

'There has been a problem here'
(China Daily, Aug. 3)

Amid the cacophony of athletes and coaches apologizing after eight shuttlers were disqualified for throwing matches at the London Olympics, another sound cut through. It was a cry for Olympic organizers to review the badminton format that inadvertently led to the controversy in the first place.

The shockwaves caused by the expulsion of four doubles pairs - including China's top duo of Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang - triggered a discussion as to who was at fault: Those who broke the rules or those who set up a system that encouraged the behavior. Popular CCTV news commentator Bai Yansong lashed out at the rules. "Before we attack our own players, we should think about what they had to face," he said during a CCTV Olympics program.

"Should they, knowing they've already got through to the next round, still play with 100 percent of their energy to lock an uncertain group win so that they can meet their compatriots as early as possible and kill each other? Are they stupid; or is something wrong with their minds? I think the unreasonable rules are the real absurdity here. Any rules by which someone can benefit from losing should be changed, and we should not pin all the blame on the individuals."

Britain wins gold, then another, then everybody celebrates a lot
(China Daily, Aug. 3)

Rowers takes host's first title of Games; new hero Wiggins follows in cycling. British Olympic champion Bradley Wiggins has cemented his place as one of the country's greatest ever sportsmen, but the country is grateful to the girls for leading the way, the media said on Thursday.

Rowers Helen Glover and Heather Stanning eased growing home nerves by destroying the opposition to claim Britain's first gold of the 2012 Games, setting the stage for Wiggins to become the country's most decorated Olympian later in the day. "At last, a golden touch brings Games to life for fervent fans," said the Daily Telegraph's front-page headline, while the Guardian went with "Phew", reflecting the sense of relief around Britain.

The Daily Mail splashed "Golden Wonders" above a picture of the victorious athletes, while popular tabloid The Sun opted simply to spell out "GOOOOOOOOOOOLD!" across its front page. Cyclist Wiggins captured the nation's hearts when he became Britain's first winner of the Tour de France 10 days ago, and Olympic victory - coupled with his engaging personality - have ensured enduring fame. "Bradley Wiggins: cycling's good bloke wins gold and public adoration", said the headline above Guardian columnist Zoe Williams' tribute.

Made-in-China products standout in Olympics
(China Daily, Aug. 2)

GUANGZHOU - At the exhibition room of a small string manufacturing company in south China's Guangdong Province, strings of different styles and colors hang on the walls, displaying their international elements. The strings include those with famous brand logos, such as Benz and Coca Cola, as well as the world-popular cartoon images, such as Angry Birds and Winnie the Pooh.

The Zhanhong Weaving String Co., Ltd, based in the Shatian Township in the city of Dongguan, produces 5 million weaving strings for the world monthly, ranging from badge ribbons to trunk belts.
On the other side of the world, where the Olympics Games and Paralympic Games are being held in London, athletes, coaches, volunteers and working staff are carrying their ID badges around their necks with a total of 700,000 ribbons produced by Zhanhong, giving its chairman Chen Jiemin every reason to be proud.

"Wherever there is a country in the world, there are strings we produced," Chen said. Apart from badge ribbons, the company also received orders of 5 million strings for Olympic-related merchandise through authorized agents. Chen still remembers two years ago, when the company attended the Canton Fair - China's largest trade fair - in the Guangdong provincial capital Guangzhou, a "mysterious" potential buyer expressed his interest in their strings.

Time to tear off arrogance, prejudice against China
(China Daily, Aug. 2)

BEIJING - Since the opening of the London Olympic Games last week, a small number of Western media have indulged in making up stories about China that range from labeling Chinese athletes "medal machines" to doping claims based on no evidence. By doing so, the Western writers have demonstrated an arrogance and prejudice against Chinese athletes that has ignited widespread criticism from all around the world.

The Olympic Games are a huge gala for sports competition and to compete for medals is in line with the Olympic spirit. It is known to all that China topped the gold medal standings four years ago at the Beijing Olympics but the Chinese are fully aware that China still lags behind the No. 1 powerhouse in the world. Therefore, the Chinese delegation did not set for itself the goal of topping the gold medal standings at the London Olympics.

The Austrian newspaper Der Standard noted recently that China, which boasts a population of 1.3 billion people, has an advantage in selecting potential sports talent compared to a country with a population of 311 million (referring to the United States). However, a simple fact has been deliberately neglected.

Chinese pair sets team sprint record, Britain out
(Shanghai Daily/Agencies, Aug. 3)

CHINA set a women's team sprint world record twice in two races yesterday, minutes after host Britain had done the same and was then disqualified as the Olympic track cycling got off to a thrilling start.

Guo Shuang and Gong Jinjie clocked 32.422 seconds in the first round to go into the gold medal match with Germany having earlier managed 32.447 in qualifying.

British pair Victoria Pendleton and Jessica Varnish had been roared on by a passionate home crowd to set 32.526 after a shaky start in qualifying but were disqualified for an illegal change in the subsequent first round. The women's team sprint is making its debut at the Olympics. The final in the humid velodrome was scheduled for later yesterday.

Olympic apps have even China's athletes glued to their phones
(Want China Times, Aug. 2)

China's mobile internet companies are taking advantage of the London Olympic Games to fight for a larger market share, reports the Southern Metropolis Daily in Guangzhou.

During the Beijing Olympics in 2008, mobile internet was still an emerging market and only a relatively small number of 70 million people in China were surfing the web through mobile terminals, the London Olympics arrives at a time when 350 million people in the country are using mobile devices to get the latest news.

Samsung has greatly enhanced its profile in China by presenting its flagship Galaxy S3 smartphone to each member of the Chinese Olympic delegation before they departed for London. When people in China watched their national team entering the stadium at the opening ceremony on July 27, they saw almost all the athletes carrying their Galaxy S3 phones.

Gold a heavy burden for athletes

Chinese swimmer deserves accolades, not suspicions, for Olympic medals
(Toronto Star, July 31)

When you strip away the pageantry and ever-increasing commercialism, the Olympics are about amazing feats of athleticism. Millions of people tune in every four years to watch summer athletes compete against each other—and the clock—in their drive to go faster, higher or be stronger than anyone else on the planet.

The world saw that on Saturday when swimmer Ye Shiwen broke the world record to win gold in the 400-metre individual medley. We watched on Monday when Ye broke the Olympic record during the semi-final of the 200-metre individual medley and, once again, on Tuesday when she smashed that record to win gold in the final.

How unfortunate, then, that instead of widespread accolades, this 16-year-old from China has been given the arched eyebrow treatment for her spectacular swims. Too spectacular, some say. To date, there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that Ye has ever taken a banned substance. Indeed, there’s a fair bit to prove she hasn’t. She – like other athletes competing in London – has been repeatedly tested and cleared. And yet, because she’s a Chinese swimmer, a dark shadow is being hung over her skill and success.

Swimmer Ye calls U.S. coach Leonard "unprofessional"
(SINA English, Aug. 2)

LONDON, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen said on Thursday that American swimming coach John Leonard, who kept accusing her of doping, was unprofessional. "The coach was not professional," said Ye, who broke the women's 400m medley world record to win an Olympic gold last Saturday and won the 200m medley title on Tuesday.

Ye's good results aroused questions about whether or not she had doped to achieve success. Leonard, head of the American Swimming Coaches Association, described Ye's freestyle time of 58.68 seconds for the last 100 meters in her 400m individual medley victory as "unbelievable" and raised suspicions about the authenticity of her swims.

The Chinese swimmer, who set a world record of 4:28.43 in the 400m medley, swam a faster last-50 meters than men's 400m medley winner Ryan Lochte from the United States. "It doesn't add up," said Leonard. "She swam three competitive splits in pine wire what women are doing right now and then she unleashed an historic anomaly. There's something not quite right there."

Table tennis "young guns" are getting a helping hand from more experienced "shooters" who know what its like to face an Olympic showdown.

Why Ban Full-Body Olympics Swimsuits? A Scientist Explains Polyurethane
(The Daily Beast, July 25)

The world of swimming has recently emerged out of a very difficult period in which it had to come to grips with the role of new technology in the sport. We are used to technical improvements in pieces of equipment like tennis racquets, fiberglass vaulters’ poles, and golf clubs changing performance levels, but the appearance of whole-body polyurethane swimsuits has taken the issue to another level.

Swimmers have always taken steps to reduce the drag on their bodies through the water. All body hair was shaved off ahead of major competitions, and sleek swimming caps were used to remove any drag from head hair. But the new swimsuits took these measures a whole lot further. They were made from an extremely thin layer of foamlike material that enclosed tiny pockets of gas that made the swimmer wearing the suit to be far more buoyant.

As a result, swimmers floated higher in the water and were subject to less drag. The suits in effect pushed water away from the swimmer’s body and were therefore dubbed hydrophobic. The drag on the human body moving in water is around 780 times larger than the drag when moving in air, so there is considerable advantage to getting as much of the body above the water level as possible. These suits also made the body shape very smooth and hydrodynamic.

Sun Yang fastest in 1,500 meters semi-finals
(China Daily, Aug. 3)

LONDON - Sun Yang will be favorite to win his second gold medal of the London Olympic Games when he swims the final of the men's 1,500 meters freestyle on Saturday. The world record holder, who won the 400 meters freestyle earlier in the week and who also has bronze medals from the 200 meters and 4x200 meter relay, swam almost three seconds faster than anyone else in Thursday's 1,500 meters semi-final

Sun's time of 14:43.25 was comfortably clear of Tunisia's Oussama Mellouli, who swam 14:46.23 and Canadian, Ryan Cochrane, who finished in a time of 14:49.31. Great Britain's Martin Fogg and South Korean Park Taehwan also made it to the final, but given that he was conserving his energy, it is hard to see anyone stopping Sun.

"We are all in the race for gold, but my aim is to produce a race I can be proud of,"said Cochrane.
The morning began with the heats of the women's 50 meters freestyle and 100 meters gold medalist, Romoni Kromowidjojo was fastest off the blocks and across the pool in a time of 24.51, while the slowest qualifier, Anna Santamans needed just 25.23 in a 'blink and you miss it' series of races.

One day after China was stripped of the gold medal in the women's team sprint track cycling event, the cycling team announced on Friday that it would appeal to the International Cycling Union and International Olympic Committee.

"We were relegated to the silver medal moments after the finish," the appeal letter read. "Based on the Olympic spirit and respect for the referee's rule at that time, we accepted that and attended the award ceremony because we wanted to show our sportsmanship at that time.

"We later took a close look at the video replay and studied the rules again. It's the first time this event has been included at the Olympic Games. We found the rules are not complete and do not give a specific explanation of some offenses. That's why we appealed — because we could not find the specific rule to judge our riders' offense."

Mixed doubles duo wins badminton gold medal
(China Daily, Aug. 4)

LONDON -- China's mixed doubles players Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei beat their teammates Xu Chen and Ma Jin at the Wembley Arena Friday afternoon, clinching the first gold medal in badminton events at the London Olympics.

Their scores were 21-11 and 21-17. Xu and Ma snatched the silver. It is the first time China bags both the gold and the silver medals of the event at the Olympics.

Zhang/Zhao, the world No. 1 seed, dominated the court from the beginning, while their rivals made more mistakes. In the second game, they scored eight points in a row. Xu and Ma rallied to catch up, collecting four points before the match point. But they were too far behind to surpass.

Women closing the gap on men
(Shanghai Daily/Agencies, Aug. 4)

THE phenomenal speeds reached by teenage Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen at the London Olympics raises questions about whether the gap between men and women in sport may one day disappear.

Ye, who has won two gold medals and broken a world record at the Games so far, clocked a time for the last, freestyle lap of her medley swim that rivaled the men's champion. There's plenty of evidence to show the gender gap exists, and has done so ever since women competed alongside men at international sporting events.

Yet the gap has been narrowing over the years - so will women one day catch the men? They'll get close, says John Brewer, a professor of sports science at Britain's University of Bedfordshire - but only in some events.

Chinese divers finish 1-2 in women's springboard preliminary
(Shanghai Daily/Xinhua, Aug. 4)

LONDON, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- China's Olympic champion Wu Minxia ruled the women's 3m springboard preliminary to be the top qualifier at the London Olympics on Friday, moving closer to equalling Guo Jingjing's record of six Olympic diving medals.

Wu and her compatriot He Zi, who were newly crowned in synchro event in London, completed a 1-2 finish in the preliminary.

Wu, five-time Olympic medalist, picked the highest score from the preliminary, 84 points for her last dive - a difficult back two-and-a-half somersault in pike position, leading the field with an overall 387.95 points. He totaled 363.85 points.

China lose crucial game against Turkey 82-55 in Olympic women's basketball tournament
(Shanghai Daily, Aug. 4)

CHINA lost a crucial game against Turkey by 82-55 yesterday in the preliminary round of the women's basketball competition at the 2012 London Olympic Games. The loss dropped China to the third place in Group A, a placing that might be their final position as their final group rivals are the United States.

Turkey (3-1) will next face the winless Croatia (0-3) in the last group game on Sunday. If they finish second in the group, they might take on France or Russia, who will vie for the first placing in Group B.
Australia defeated Russia 70-66 to stay in second place and will possibly meet China in the knock-out stage.

China lost 90-56 to Australia in the Beijing 2008 Games and 91-68 again at the World Championships in 2010. "I didn't look at the results of the other group. I wanted to win today's game. A victory would put us in a favorable position in the knock-out round and secure at least a sixth-place finishing," China's center Chen Nan said.

China's Tong Wen misses out on Olympic title defence
(Shanghai Daily, Aug. 4)

LONDON, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese star judoka Tong Wen's bid for her second straight Olympic gold medal was thwarted on Friday as she suffered a shock defeat in the semifinals on the last day of the judo competition.

Tong beat Brazilian Maria Suelen Altheman in the bronze medal fight with an ippon, her fourth in five matches. But a lapse in the semifinals cost Tong a chance of defending her +78kg Olympic title and sent Cuban Idalys Ortiz to the final.

Ortiz, the bronze medalist in Beijing Games, then defeated Japanese Mika Sugimoto to win gold. "China won three gold medals in judo four years ago. This time the team lay hopes on me, so I feel much pressure, which prevented me from delivering my potential," said the 29-year-old Tong.

Dong delights with bouncy trampoline gold
(Shanghai Daily/AFP, Aug. 4)

TWO-TIME world champion Dong Dong, who began his final routine yesterday with five twisting triple flips, won the men's Olympic trampoline gold with a score of 62.990 points.

Soaring 10 meters into the air and making triple somersaults with twisting front and back flips, the springy high-fliers of the Olympics defy gravity with each bounce while judges grade them on flight time as well as acrobatic moves.

Dong exited after competing to the song "Jump" by Van Halen and left the medal podium to "Jumpin' Jack Flash" by the Rolling Stones. Mandy Lomax brought her eight-year-old son Joseph to watch, finally getting tickets only three days before the event after trying for months.

Phelps set for farewell, Bolt, Blake take to track
(Shanghai Daily, Aug. 4)

AMERICAN swimming icon Michael Phelps will bring the curtain down on his glittering Olympic career today as attention turns to track and field and the most eagerly anticipated 100m in history.

After a slow start to his campaign, Phelps could well sign off with his fourth gold medal of the Games as he aims to consolidate his position as the most decorated Olympian in history.

A nail-biting victory in the men's 100m butterfly yesterday saw Phelps claim his second individual title of the Olympics after earlier bagging gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay. The 27-year-old -- who claimed a record eight golds in Beijing four years ago -- will be strongly fancied to collect the 18th gold of his career, and his 22nd career Olympic medal, in Saturday's 4x100m medley relay.

Coach worried about Liu Xiang's foot injury
(China Daily, Aug. 4)

LONDON - Liu Xiang's coach said on Friday the 2004 Olympic hurdles champion is being troubled with foot injury. "His back problem is nothing to worry about, but his foot injury which has flared up is worrying me," said coach Sun Haiping at Heathrow Airport.

Sun and Liu returned to London on Friday from Germany where Liu trained for two weeks after he withdrew from a London athletics race because of back discomfort. Liu, a Chinese sports icon, pulled out of the 2008 Olympics because of foot injury.

Sun noted anyone who clocks between 12.90 and 19.95 seconds is able to win the 110m hurdles title in London. "We are confident despite the injury," said Sun. "But, I am a little bit worried," he added.

Mascot maker feels pinch of rising labor costs
(China Daily, Aug. 4)

Gu Feng, whose company has made around 500,000 sets of Wenlock and Mandeville, the London 2012 Olympic Games mascots, is worried as he looks ahead to the 2016 Games in Brazil.

The 55-year-old chairman of Yancheng Rainbow Arts and Crafts Co in East China's Jiangsu province said his plant is under pressure because of workers' pay rises and the depreciation of the US dollar. Although this should be the peak season for selling toys, Gu's plant is not busy because of a shortage of new orders - except for the Olympic ones.

"We were lucky to get the Olympic orders this year. But who knows what will happen four years later in Rio de Janeiro?" he said. "I mean, if the franchisee emphasizes nothing but low price, we might lose our advantage to the Southeast Asian countries where labor costs are low."

Gold medal for public participation
(China Daily, Aug. 4)

Watching Chinese weightlifter Wu Jingbiao burst into painful tears, and bow and apologize in front of cameras after having to settle for a silver medal at the London Olympic Games was nothing but heartbreaking.

The 23-year-old's tears should not have been for failing to win the gold. Instead, they should have been tears of happiness. After all, a silver medal also represents triumph, although many expected him to win the gold.

No one should blame Wu, not even the athlete himself. Athletes should be applauded and celebrated as long as they try their best, regardless of what place they finish in a contest. This Olympic spirit, however, is not well understood by most Chinese, officials and the public alike.

Japan coach denies rule-bending
(China Daily, Aug. 4)

London - Japan women's soccer coach Norio Sasaki hit back after being criticised for ordering the world champions not to win their final first-round game at the London Olympics. A defiant Sasaki denied any rule-bending on his part in Tuesday's 0-0 draw against South Africa.

"We never set out with the intention for playing for a draw," he told reporters after his team beat Brazil 2-0 in Cardiff on Friday to reach the semifinals. "We never tried to play for a draw from the start.

"From the start we were playing for three points. I made a decision based on the way the game was going and with time running out."

Why hasn't Katie Ledecky been accused of doping yet Ye Shiwen was?
Ledecky just swam 11 seconds faster than her time of last month, and her improvement over the past year was 21 seconds.
But why persist at blaming Ye Shiwen?

Ye was not unknown before - she won the 200m IM at the World Championships last year. She swam 400m IM over 20 seconds slower than Lochte as well. I wonder what that US coach is thinking now...

I think this year, winning the most gold won't be something China will be proud of if they really did, its winning gold in new areas which would be their biggest achievement.

Though I still don't get how they managed 50 odd medals at the last games. Was it because they automatically qualified for every sport? Still that doesn't help much if the team was crap. I sense this yrs team isn't as strong as last times

Considering the epic failure of Japanese electronic gaints in the industrial field their downside seems to be permanent. If Japan is no longer reliable maybe China should work harder to free North Korea so that they could contribute more to Asia's glory;). Chinese Chen wins Olympic men's 20km walk
(China Daily, Aug. 5)

LONDON -- With only one day to go before his twentieth birthday, Chinese race walker Chen Ding will have a great mood for celebration after winning the gold medal in the men's 20km walk at 2012 London Olympics here on Saturday. "It is a wonderful gift for my birthday," said Chen, who clocked one hour, 18 minutes and 46 seconds to set a new Olympic record while cruising to the top podium.

It is the first Olympic gold medal won by a Chinese male walker and also the second Olympic gold won by a Chinese male track and field athlete following the country's hurdling star Liu Xiang who claimed title at 2004 Athens Games. "I do not think I will emerge as a superstar like Liu Xiang," said Chen. "Before I won the gold medal, I was just an ordinary athlete. And if I want to achieve more, I need to remain ordinary and keep a low profile."

But during the 20-kilometer race on Saturday, the 20-year-old young man did race like a superstar. After the 10km mark Chen was never left behind by the leading group. He started to speed up for a leading position after 16 kilometers, and was hardly challenged with a clear and comfortable lead in the front.

LONDON -- Chinese badminton players Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei outplayed Japanese pair Fujii Mizuki/Kakiiwa Reika 2-0 Saturday afternoon, winning the gold medals in women's doubles. The world No. 2 seed duo breezed past the Japanese in the first game 21-10, before winning a hard battle in the second 25-23.

A Korean coach's Chinese family
(China Daily, Aug. 5)

Kim Sang-ryul cares about China's women's hockey on and off the field.

As the only South Korean coach in China's sports delegation, Kim Sang-ryul isn't lonely at the London Games. His Chinese women's hockey team has become his family. "I'm not alone or feeling lonely," Kim said after China was defeated 1-0 by the Netherlands in its third-group match on Thursday.

"I'm a member of this family. I'm one of their teachers and one of their fathers. When they have problems, I feel like I am their father, and I should deal with that." During the Beijing Games, Kim was head coach of China's men's team and joined a number of his compatriots who worked with China's hockey, archery and handball teams. This time around doesn't feel any different though.

"At the London Olympics, there were also other foreign coaches in the Chinese delegation," he said. "Not just me. We are foreigners, but we are coaching China. China is my team." Kim seems to genuinely enjoy his players. He said his obvious warmth has even drawn criticism. "Sometimes, other Chinese coaches complain to me and tell me 'you're not strict enough'. I ask them 'if she was your daughter, would you be saying the same thing?'" said the former Korean national coach.

Fok family gives support to Chinese Olympians
(China Daily, Aug. 5)

From China's first Olympic gold medal in 1984, to Beijing 2008 and the ongoing London Olympics, Hong Kong's rags-to-riches Fok family has taken it as a journey. Along the way, their lasting passion and contributions have helped Chinese athletes shine at the global competitions.

Timothy Fok - with three sons and soon-to-be daughter-in-law Guo Jingjing, a well-recognized Olympic champion - is now in London cheering on the athletes and mobilizing resources to promote sports, culture and education for China and other parts of the world. "I feel lucky I can become not only a witness but also a contributor during the journey," says Fok, who has "several hats" on his head at the Hong Kong, national and global levels.

Apart from being a business executive who manages a multi-billion-dollar business empire handed down by his late father Fok Ying-tung, Fok has been president of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee since 1997, when Hong Kong was returned to China.

China out of contention in basketball
(China Daily, Aug. 5)

LONDON - China lost to Brazil 98-59 for their fourth consecutive defeat on Saturday and they were out of the contention of the knock-out stage of the men's basketball competition at the 2012 London Olympic Games here.

This was the first time that the Chinese failed to enter the quarter-finals at the Olympics since 2000. All the Chinese could do is to avoid a winless journey to London when they face the hosts Britain in the last game in the preliminary round on Monday.

Like the other three losses, China were squeezed on the board by 49-32 and let the Brazilians score 40 points in the paint. Without pivot Yao Ming, who retired last summer, China lost ground every time in the big-guy showdown though they have some good outside shooters.

Yao supports Ye Shiwen and BWF's decision
(China Daily, Aug. 5)

LONDON - Former Chinese basketball player Yao Ming said Saturday swimmer Ye Shiwen deserves respect from the Americans and the decision of the Badminton World Federation is a lesson to the Chinese team. Yao, who retired last summer and becomes a basketball broadcaster for the Chinese Central Television in London, had a half-hour interview at the Xinhua office of the London Olympic Games Saturday afternoon. The accusation of Ye was one of his concerns.

"I can understand the Americans, who dominated the pool for decades. It's a common reaction," Yao said. "It happened when Usain Bolt (of Jamaica) emerged, and it happened again on Ye." The 16-year-old Ye broke the women's 400m medley world record to win the gold medal by 4:28.43. Her success raised a wave of suspicions about doping.

John Leonard, head of the American Swimming Coaches Association, questioned Ye's freestyle time of 58.68 seconds in the last 100 meters as "unbelievable". "Ye jumped out from nowhere to take away the glories that the Americans thought belonged to them for a long time. It's not a good feeling, same feeling for us if someone takes away the gold medal from the Chinese on table tennis. But I think the Americans were not gentlemen when they said like that," Yao said.

LONDON - The Chinese team on Saturday demanded an explanation from the world cycling ruling body UCI on the relegation of the Chinese to silver medal.

The Chinese beat their German rivals in the women's team pursuit final on Thursday, only to be relegated to second place.

The Chinese team reviewed the race video, saying they didn't violate any rules of the sport. China's coach Daniel Morelon said the referees "robbed" his students of a gold medal.
^^

The appeal is the right action.
Because the Chinese deserved the gold medal.

Everytime in a losing condition Lin Dan has the power (luck) to pull it back. Even when the score was so tight and behind I had a strong feeling that Lin Dan would win it. Chong Wei is my favorite player all time and I felt sad for him :(

No, I meant 2008 :)

I am only talking about number of days and the medal number. 9 days, 30 golds, 61 totals now. It was 35 golds and 61 total in 2008. I don't know how different the schedule is between London and Beijing. But so far it looks very comparable.

Where did the medals come in 2008?

Bolt fastest in 100m, China back to top
(China Daily, Aug. 6)

LONDON- Jamaica's Usain Bolt cemented his status as the fastest man on earth when he stormed to victory in the 100-meter dash on Sunday, while China captured five gold medals to reclaim the top spot in the medals table. Bolt overcame a slow start to cross the line in an Olympic record time of 9.63 seconds, just five hundredths off his own world record at the sell-out 8,000-capacity Olympic stadium.

The 25-year-old is only the second man to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals in the blue riband event. The other athlete is Carl Lewis, who achieved the feat in 1984 and 1988. "I was slightly worried about my start, I slipped a little in the blocks," said Bolt. "I don't have the best reactions, but I secured it and that's the key."

Compatriot Yohan Blake, who is widely tipped a serious challenger to Bolt in years to come, grabbed the silver medal in a personal best-equaling 9.76 seconds. "To be the second-fastest man in the world behind Bolt is an honor," said Blake. American Justin Gay, the 2004 Olympics winner who was back to action following a four-year doping ban, had bronze in a personal best 9.79.

Lin Dan wins final battle against Lee Chong Wei
(China Daily, Aug. 6)

LONDON, August 5 (Xinhua) -- Every match has a winner. It was just one shot, which went across the back line of the court. But because it was the match point, fate became different for those at two sides of the net.

Chinese badminton star Lin Dan beat his arch-rival Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia 2-1 after dropping a game, and won the gold medal in men's singles Sunday afternoon in the Wembley Arena. He is the first shuttler to have defended his Olympic title in the event. The word "heart-stirring" was not enough to describe how fierce the competition was, as they were both best shuttlers in an era, topping the world rankings alternatively.

Lin didn't seem to be in form in the first game, lashing the shuttlecock out of the court for at least nine times and delivering at least five returns into the net. Lee, the No. 1 seed, changed his direction abruptly, posing threats to the Beijing Olympic champion with diagonal smashes. With a lapse of Lin, the set concluded 15-21.

Chinese Zou defends his Olympic floor title
(China Daily, Aug. 6)

LONDON - China's Zou Kai presented a flawless routine on floor exercise on Sunday, successfully defend the title on which he won four years ago. Zou, as the top finisher in the qualification, improved his leading qualifying score to reach a lofty 15.933 points, overtaking the reigning world champion Kohei Uchimura of Japan, who pulled out 15.800 points as the starter.

Russia's Denis Ablyazin shared a 15.800 with Uchimura, but a lower execution point pushed him to bronze medal. Uchimura took 9.1 points in execution against Ablyazin's 8.7, but the leading 7.1 of difficulty score, 0.2 more than Zou, propelled the Russian to the third place.

"I have expected Uchimura to have a high score and I'm mentally prepared for this, so the result came out from him would not affect me much," said Zou. "I'm at competition like this, you have no tactics at all. What you can do is to get yourself prepared mentally. The outcome proved that I've prepared myself well."

It's not doping that wins races, Sun says
(China Daily, Aug. 6)

Chinese swimmer vehemently denies allegations after setting world record

China's sensational swimmer Sun Yang fiercely denied doping speculations that arose after he broke his own record to win gold in the men's 1,500m freestyle at the London Olympics. The suspicions have persisted nearly a week after Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen set a record in the women's 400m individual medley, as pundits continue to question the current anti-doping system's competency.

Sun smashed the decade-old 1,500m world record at last year's Worlds in Shanghai and shaved 3.12 seconds off that record in London, claiming his second gold medal at the Games with a time of 14 min, 31.02 sec.

When media asked him about doping, Sun reminded them that US prodigy Missy Franklin's 200m backstroke result had also been considered "too fast to believe". "How could she (Franklin) swim as fast as a butterfly swimmer did over the same distance?" Sun asked. "I believe her result came from her hard work."

Foreign legion plays role in winning campaign
(China Daily, Aug. 6)

They could be dubbed the sporting foreign legion and, appropriately, French coach Daniel Levavasseur is one of them. He helped the women's epee team win an Olympic gold medal on Saturday and is one of more than 20 foreign coaches hired to help Chinese athletes hunt for gold, silver and bronze.

The strategy has been pretty successful, so far. China, along with the US, heads the medal table, and foreign coaches have helped Chinese athletes conquer the world in sports normally associated with the West. But winning formulas do not happen overnight. It takes years of blood, sweat and tears and trust must be established.

Juan Jane Giralt, the Spanish coach of the women's water polo team, said that trust is the very first step to success. "There may be too much emphasis on gold medals and too much hard, hard work," Giralt, told China Daily on Friday. Sometimes it feels as if you are expected to win gold, and nothing else will do, he said.
