View Full Version : Post Seoul Street Scenes
IntrepidMan November 15th, 2004, 05:58 PM Greetings all. I'm taking a college course now on modern Korea--right now we're learning about Korea's industrialization in the 1960s and 70s. I was wondering if anyone could post some pics of Seoul and the other cities at the street level? It's great seeing all the skyscrapers but I'd like to see what's going on below as well. My teacher told me that American soldiers are everywhere in Seoul, and that the main street in Seoul from the Blue Palace to the river is wide enough to land a B-52 on. Thanks!

Seoul has interesting street scenery, and it's my pleasure to give you an overview :). Throughout the Seoul city limits, the residential
neighbourhoods look (typically) like these:

After 6pm, the nightlife neighbourhoods of Seoul come alive, remaining quite
busy until midnight or so. Here are a few street scenes:

On the weekends, Myongdeong is one of the favourite spots of the younger
crowd. About 5000 establishments are located in this area (the clientele
being for the most part ladies in their late teens or early 20s):

The street scenes differ a bit in the satellite cities of Seoul, such as Ilsan,
Bundang, Anyang, Incheon, Bucheon, or Hwajeong. While those are
technically not part of Seoul, the suburban areas make up for more than half of
metro Seoul's population. Here are a few glimpses of Ilsan and Anyang (the
other satellite cities being similar):

Concerning US soldiers being everywhere -- they are rather hard to find
except in Itaewon or at the Hyatt hotel.. I'd say there's a much higher
chance to see foreign english teachers rather than GIs in the other districts
of Seoul..
cheers

noli November 21st, 2004, 03:50 AM You really wont see soldiers unless you go to Iteawon or around the bases. I live in Kangnam and I havent seen any American soldiers here yet. At least not in uniform but even the foreigners here dress in suits. The American soldiers, are, well, not likely to wear suits. They just go to Iteawon to get drunk. Im a foreigner but I stay away from that place, there are way better places to party in Seoul than Itaewon (Apgujeong has some cool places packed with young people), which is a dump. The only good things about Itaewon are the various restaurants (from American to Indian to Turkish food).
There are a lot of wide streets. I really dont think Seoul has a "main road". The road from 경복궁 towards the river (it doesnt really go to the river, its rather a short stretch that is so wide, so I doint tthink a B52 could really land there) used to be the main road maybe when the CBD was the main business district. But a lot of other districts have popped up that are maybe more important. Teheran-ro in Kangnam (my neighbourhoood heheh) or Yeoido.
The best way to learn about Korea is to come here and live a while.
Oh, this is my neighbourhood. Behind, to the left, maybe 50 meters away is my building :)

You can see some beautiful foreign women, if you look. But you have to go to places where foreigners get together. Even some of the English teachers are quite good looking, but its a small percentage. Actually I have noticed that a lot of the foregners here dress like slobs. Especially in kangnam, I think that people should try and lookmgood, raise the image for the rest of us. Looking at the foreigners, I wouldnt wanna hang out with them. So I dont really hang out with any foreigners. Most of my friends are Korean. I have one foreigner friend, he is a teacher. I usually go to Apgujeong if I go anywhere.
Im from Canada, was born in Poland.
