Things to do in Townsville and Cairns....

I am coming up soon to look at properties in Cairns and Townsville, and was after some new clubs/bars and relative things to do? Not the tourist, oh look at the rainforests, but things locals do on weekends. Suggestions anyone?

If you come to Townsville, here's the lowdown on the clubs in Townsville.

-Coyote Ugly, Flinders St East : Newest nightclub (opened 11 Nov), name speaks for itself.

-The Bank, Flinders St East : Oldest nightclub and by far the swankiest, the who's who of TSV folk go here.

-The Brewery, Flinders St Mall/East : Downstairs is a restaurant and bar that makes some of the world's best beer, and upstairs is the nightclub with a bar that circles around the whole club and a glass dancefloor.

-Embassy On Sturt, Sturt St/Denham St : Underground nightclub, often home to weekend rave parties.

-Bullwinkles Nightclub, Flinders St East : Second oldest nightclub, currently closed for renovations until Jan 05.

-Criterion Nightclub, The Strand/King St : MY favourite nightclub, bloody huge, consists of a mid 1900's two-storey hotel building with dance floors and bars upstairs and down, and outside is a massive "beer garden" with more bars, pool tables and projector screens pumping out music clips, 1 dollar basics during the week and 2 dollar basics before midnight on the weekend...CHEAP!

-Mantaz Nightclub, Flinders St East : Next door to Molly Malone's (Irish pub), pretty nice looking nightclub, cheap jugs of Rum & Coke, pumps out African-American music all night long (eg. Usher etc)

-Mad Cow Tavern, Flinders St East : Not a nightclub per se, but a two storey club where most of the 25-30+ year olds go to, country Australian decor inside, churns out mostly classic Aussie rock all night.

-Exchange Hotel, Flinders St East : This two-storey club/hotel has a downstairs DJ room at the rear, a downstairs bar out the front, and upstairs are two bars with a large dancefloor mostly with live band music on the weekends.

Um that'll do for now...there are absolutely shitloads of bars in Townsville, however these a pretty much all the nightclubs in the Flinders St East area.

The Cairns esplanade/lagoon/pier is a buzz with activities during the day, love going down there on a nice hot day.

You could always go out to the reef with either
* Great Adventures
* Reef Magic cruises
* Pro-dive
to name a few

you could also try visiting Palm Cove 30km north near smithfield. You may feel more comfortable here than going to turtle cove (lol).

If your a gambler you could always try your luck at the reef hotel casino, or check out the rainforest dome on top of the reef casino. Its teaming with animal and plant life

Here are a few niteclubs and bars to check out
* Troppos nite club (corner of spence and lake street - in the mall) they tend to play pop/rap/rock and today's latest music
* My bar (Lake Street - near Troppos) this is my type of place! they have 2 separate bars that are joined, one is for karoke and the other just a dance floor and bar plus dj.
* The woolshed (the mall) havent been in here but from what i am aware a huge proportion of the backpackers hang out here. This club is just like troppos
* Soho night club and lounge (shields st - next to mcdonalds on the esplanade) again a huge proportion of backpackers hang out here, i havent been in this niteclub as the music and the atmosphere doesnt appeal to me. I believe they have 2 floors of clubbing space.
* Nutrix Nite club (spence st) this niteclub caters for both the gay/bi and heterosexual communities. Havent been in here but from what i have been told, its alright. Even though a majority of its patrons are of gay/bi sexual orientation, the atmosphere is pretty relaxed and respected

Depends on the sort of crowd you prefer......
For Townsville, the classiest place is easily The Bank Nightclub, though the music can tend to be a bit how ya goin at times. (Depending on what sort of music you like that is) Another great club is the embassy, this is probably the least commercial club in Townsville, you will hear alot of house & breaks tunes here, often big name DJ's with the likes of Kid Kenobi (Aus #1 DJ), Mark Dynamix & Mat Kitshon spinning here regularly. The Brewery also has another very good nightclub upstairs, here you will hear anything from commercial dance to house to trance. I sometimes DJ there and 2 more of my mates also DJ there. Nice spot when there is a good crowd in. :) I don't go anywhere else.

the nutrix club has one of those 'slingshot' rides next door (like the one one the gold coast) if you're into scary thrill rides

Yeah, The Slingshot, That's being torn down for the 15 story building cnr spence and sheidls across from the Police HQ. If you want fine dining shayplan, look for palmer street in Sth Townsville. That is Townsville's strip of Dining. Here's a couple I've been to.

* Bistro 1
They make Good Woodfired Pizzas here. I've only tried the Pizzas but they do have a good menu.

*Cactus Jacks
Mexican and North American specialties here. Grilled Chicken Fajitas, Grilled Steaks, Bacon Crispers and various foods. Bar Service I've never tried (as I'm young) but it has many different flavoured Margeritas, and Alcoholic beverages that seem to look good. Happy Hour is on Wednesdays from 6-7pm I think.

*Benny's Hot Wok
Just Next door to Cactus Jacks.
Various asian dishes, mainly noodles, very nice and very popular, You get 15-20% of your bill if you go there around 6 and leave around 7pm but that is the popular time.

*Micheal's
Never been here but I must say that the place has been awarded best resturant in Townsville 5 times since it's been operating. It's mainly French cusienes etc.

*Seaview Steakhouse
Its not on Palmer street but its right on our strand. The steakhouse does give its reputation out as the best steaks and woodfired pizzas in NQ and they are.

Michel's is an excellent resturant. The food is exquisite! :) As Gertzy already pointed out, the new Steakhouse at the Seaview on the strand has excellent steaks, the woodfired pizzas look pretty tasty too. Benny's Hotwok is also very good, i have only dined there once, the noodles are very nice. :)

You will hear plenty of RnB music in Nth Qld. (Unfortunately) lol In Townsville:
Earlier on in the evening, (Before 12am) at The Bank Nightclub. The Criterion you will hear quite a bit of RnB with a bit of commercial dance thrown in to break it up, there is quite a good chanceyou will hear plenty of RnB at Mantaz Nightclub. You WON'T hear RnB at The Embassy Nightclub or The Brewery. Bullwinkles Nightclub isn't open until early next year and as far as i know, they won't be playing RnB when they re-open!! WooHoo!! ;) Don't know about Cairns. I know you won't hear any in SoHo Nightclub though.

The big night in T'ville is a Saturday night by a long way. You want girls, The Bank on a Saturday night has plenty.

Ahhhhhh. Don't go to The Bank then. Any of the pubs will have XXXX on tap. Actually, on a Friday afternoon, The Great Northern Hotel on Flinders St West, has XXXX in the wooden keg. I have heard very good things about it.

Got back from Nth QLD...

TSV - Has a lot to offer for a small city. Coyote Ugly won't last long - economically. The Bank is great. Casino is a joke..

Cairns - Troppos is great. And so is the Sport Bar. Only two places I went to.

Glad you enjoyed your visit. :) Yes the casino isn't all that good, though it is better than what it used to be. I'm not a huge casino fan anyway. I haven't been to the Coyote Ugly Bar yet and i don't plan on going there. It's just not my style at all. The Bank is a pretty funky place alright, just wish they could lose the top 40 music. But, it's what alot of the public in Townsville like i'm afraid.

i went to cairns in july on the new perth - cairns direct flights, we went out to green island, went submarine thing, on a bus tour etc.. was good

Ive also been to green island, and i went to a reef also. like a 2-3 hour boat ride there. was fun tho. liked swimming in it.

Green Island is a lovely spot! Good snorkelling right off the beach. :)

That might have been the Velvet Underground, in the Reef Casino. It's sort of new but from what I hear it's pretty good. Another place in the Casino, Vertigo offers live music at nights and then your top 40s but it's mainly a bar place.

We need our live music back!!
