A question, or more so, a ,query on whether Sydney City should introduce one way traffic streets? Do you agree?

Would it create more rat-runners doing doing 'circles' around World Square? Is is feasible? Where would it start/end?

Will it enhance pedestrian safety and wider sidewalks? What do you think...?

when it comes to predistrian safety i prefer a cheap option of buiulding more footbridges or a system of them, or amybe a elevated walkway sysem. on a slightly cheaper option, place fencing along certain sides of a road to prevent preds walking arcoss the rd.

there already are several one way streets but they are usully low traffic as far as i know.

i think it'll be great to extend underground arcade like town hall, GVB, Woolworths metro, etc.

Most streets are one way anyway, and they work fine at present.

Sydney is a wonderful city full of life and activity. Leave the traffic flow as it is and keep the pedestrians at ground level. Its the peopel that bring the city alive. Please no more underground malls, overhead foot-bridges or walkways. Keep us at ground level.

Have to agree with Aussie Steve. No more underground malls. I'd love to see an extension of the Pitt St Mall pedestrian section down past the Hilton as far as Park St, there's very little traffic there anyways, I think its only one lane. One way streets? Whatever. I'd rather see more pedestrianised areas. Maybe George St should only be open to public transport and pedestrians! How's that for radical !!

Doesn't sound that radical.

Sorry to barge in here, but I just stumbled upon the subject, and it fascinates me. Further, I know nothing about streets & traffic conditions in Sydney.

However, my basic reaction is: nooOOOOO! One-way streets are horrible! They lead to faster traffic, more cars, decreased visibility for commercial establishments, and severely reduced safety for bicyclists and pedestrians.

And WHAT???? Pedestrian bridges to cross major streets? That's an outrage! Just to keep the traffic flowing and the motorists from becoming enraged in their frustration over stop & go traffic? That's reducing pedestrians to 2nd class citizens and force them to go out of their way just to smooth the road for the precious people who happen to be sitting in automobiles! :bash:

I'm aware of several US cities that have abandoned their 1-way street systems, reverting them to two-way traffic, among them Chicago and San Jose. My neighborhood association is seeking to accomplish this for Berkeley as well. :horse:
