It is the site of one of the bloodiest battle in the province of Bulacan between Katipuneros led by Gen. Anacleto “Matanglawin” Enriquez and Spanish soldiers under Col. Lopez Arteaga. Some 800 Katipuneros died in the battle, including “Matanglawin”. Zialcita and Martin I. Tinio, Jr. and published in 1980 was not only the first substantial volume to extensively discuss the various elements of 19th to early 20th century homes in the Philippines, but it also featured hundreds of photographs of these structures and entered them into the consciousness of thousands of heritage-keen readers of almost three decades ago (including the mid-teen version of me). One such house raised to “standard-bearer” status on pages 114 to 121 of that book was a large structure bounded by MacArthur Highway and the river in the Bulacan town of Balagtas, formerly Bigaa. Here’s how it appeared in the book, more or less (the house isn't lopsided -- the large-format book on the letter-paper-sized scanner is): http://images.rally65.multiply.com/image/2/photos/62/400x400/70/PAH-Constantino-1.jpg?et=rHj%2BhuW4PvuZGEm63NmtiA&nmid=115627433 and here’s how it looks today, unfortunately severely foreshortened in this shot (due to this photographer being too lazy to take the photo from across the road). http://images.rally65.multiply.com/image/5/photos/62/400x400/5/IMG-4864.jpg?et=Uik5WMhRWFwEMGg52hlliA&nmid=115627433 Since the photos of this house used in Philippine Ancestral Houses were taken in the late 1970’s, this structure has not fared all that well, unfortunately. A clue to these straitened circumstances is the loss of the finely-carved cupboard (originally used for storing salted meats and other delicacies) at the left edge of the façade, seen here in the book http://images.rally65.multiply.com/image/2/photos/62/400x400/72/PAH-Constantino-3.jpg?et=pHskEC5buRq7IUjJMhV8tA&nmid=115627433 and no longer seen here. photos above, as well as its even longer riverside elevation, seen here. http://images.rally65.multiply.com/image/4/photos/62/400x400/3/IMG-4862.jpg?et=ZT%2C897xrNrw9zpbnWVzIGw&nmid=115627433 More on this classic. The Mabuhay Singer's version. Kundiman- Madaling Araw -Mabuhay Singers (Rare Copy) EvhDPGsxxrs&feature=related Uploaded by philclassic on Jun 30, 2010 A classical Kundiman composition by Francisco Santiago with lyrics written by Jose Corazon de Jesus. Interpreted by the Mabuhay Singers. Audio from a vintage vinyl phonograph recording ("Mabuhay Singers Sing Kundiman", Villar Records, Mareco Inc.) ========== Francisco Santiago (1889-1947) Francisco Santiago was born in Santa Maria, Bulacan, on January 29, 1889 to musically-minded peasant parents, Felipe Santiago and Maria Santiago. He was the first of their three children. His parents had the same surname but they were not related by blood. At age seven, he took solfeggio lesssons under an uncle, Matias Magracia, a country violinist, who took him along to haranas or serenades during moonlit nights. But his parents did not like him to be a musician. It was after his father died that he was given open encouragement to study music. He became popular in his hometown as a boy singer in the school and in the church. After completing his elementary education in the public school, he went to Manila. He was admitted as a houseboy in the Dominican convent and studied piano forte under the famous Dominican music teachers, such as Blas Echegoyen, Faustino Villacorta, and Fray Primo Calzada. With the latter, he studied vocalization, organ playing and the rudiments of compositions. He finished his primary education at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran and left to find employment as a pianist in various stage theatres. He joined orchestra groups while continuing with his college course which he finished at the Liceo de Manila. In 1908, his first composition, Purita, was dedicated to the first Carnival Queen, Mis Pura Villanueva, who later married the distinguished scholar Teodoro M. Kalaw. In 1912, he won first prize in musical contest sponsored by Teodoro M. Kalaw. In the same year, he won a first prize in a musical contest entitled Oxipator (Waltz) sponsored by Yangco firm. A year later he made a zarzuela entitled Margaritang Mananahi. In 1914, he was lured to accept a job abroad, directing an orchestra in Shanghai. Upon his return to Manila, he taught piano and became director of the choir at the San Jose Seminary, Manila, 1915-1916. In September 1916, he was taken in as an instructor while working in the conservatory. He composed what is now the classic Anak ng Dalita. He enrolled at the Conservatory taking courses under Director George and others. In the same year, he fell in love with a young student who was enrolled in voice culture by the name of Concepcion Ocampo. The New director (Schofield) of the Conservatory of Music saw that Santiago should have further training abroad. Arrangements were made with University authorities and Santiago left in August 1923 to enroll at the American Conservatory of Music, Chicago, Illinois, where he obtained his Master of Music degree, 1924. He also received a special honorable mention during the commencement exercises for excellence in studies. He was the first Filipino to receive the degree of Doctor of Music from the Chicago Musical College. His graduation piece played at the Kimball Hall was entitled Concerto in B Flat Minor, 1924. The American Conservatory of Music also awarded him the teacher's Certification in voice culture. Then he participated in an international contest conducted by the Chicago Daily news, and his Remembrance, was awarded third place. Back in Manila in 1923, he made his debut at the Zorilla theatre on February 5, 1925. Dr. Santiago returned to the UP conservatory of Music. Dr. Alexander Lippay, the director of the school took notice of his talent and immediately promoted him to assistant professor, making him head of the piano department. He taught advanced composition among other subjects. He then won first prize in two national contests namely, Himno al Cristo Rey (1928) and Himno del Congreso Eucaristico Nacional (1929) which he considered the greatest moment of his life, more significant than the honor he received in Chicago. When the UP Board of Regents did not renew Dr. Lippay's contract, Santiago was named official-in-charge and was later promoted to associate professor of piano and acting director of the Conservatory. In 1935, he was named full professor and director of the Conservatory of Music. During the Japanese occupation in 1943, he had a heart attack and suffered from paralysis which incapacitated him. Santiago's masterpiece was the "Concerto in B flat minor" for pianoforte and orchestra. His most famous piece "Kundiman, (Anak-Dalita)", was sung upon the request of King Alfonso III before the Royal Court of Spain. He was named UP Emeritus Professor of Piano, on May 25, 1946. When the U.P. Conservatory of Music was celebrating its 30th anniversary, the nationalistic musician died of heart attack on September 28, 1947. He was buried at the North Cemetery, Manila. marcjeff03 June 7th, 2012, 07:55 PM Kumpirmado sya nga ang "ebak" :okay: punong puno ng ka bitteran ang posts.. marcjeff03 June 7th, 2012, 08:02 PM @yami.. It was erected by the Augustinian Missionaries in 1592 under the jurisdiction of the Alcalde Mayor of Bulacan. In 1602, Caluya was formally organized into a town with its own Gobernadorcillo and renamed to Bigaa. During the Philippine revolution the "insurrectos" and the "Guardia civiles". Many people died, further decimating the town, which has suffered from a cholera epidemic and nearly wiped out the population 20 years before. When the Americans established civil government in 1902, Bigaa and nearby Bocaue were combined to form a town with the latter as the seat government. In 1911, however, Bigaa was separated from Bocaue, and to it was added the town of Pandi, which became one of Bigaa's barrios. In 1946, shortly after the Philippines gained political freedom from the United States, Pandi by virtue of a legislative fiat was given a municipal charter of its own, distinct and apart from Bigaa. source (http://balagtasbulacan.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-history-of-balagtas-bulacan.html) william :D October 7th, 2012, 07:02 AM Historical Information about Pandi, Bulacan originally posted by TheAvenger (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=96023670&highlight=#post96023670) http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii560/Jewel865/Pandi%20Bulacan/pandi1001.jpg http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii560/Jewel865/Pandi%20Bulacan/p25.jpg http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii560/Jewel865/Pandi%20Bulacan/p27.jpg http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii560/Jewel865/Pandi%20Bulacan/p30.jpg http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii560/Jewel865/Pandi%20Bulacan/p31.jpg http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii560/Jewel865/Pandi%20Bulacan/p32.jpg http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii560/Jewel865/Pandi%20Bulacan/p33.jpg http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii560/Jewel865/Pandi%20Bulacan/p40.jpg http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii560/Jewel865/Pandi%20Bulacan/p76.jpg  Manila-X October 13th, 2012, 08:31 AM I've been having a discussion with various people on The Lady of Lourdes Church / Grotto in San Jose Del Monte Bulacan and the place being sanctioned by The Roman Catholic Church. http://lh5.ggpht.com/-k_XWKCDeYBE/T8-rgGNV-YI/AAAAAAAAAOk/TAxbZ4E7bOw/Our%252520Lady%252520of%252520Lourdes%252520Grotto%252520Shrine%25255B4%25255D.jpg Here is why, Private grotto draws Catholics seeking to be cured (http://www.catholic.org/international/international_story.php?id=23695) SAN JOSE DEL MONTE CITY, Philippines (UCAN) – A private grotto in northern Philippines draws crowds seeking healing, even though the local bishop has directed priests to stop saying Masses there. During Holy Week, more than 1,000 people flocked to Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto and Church in Bulacan province's San Jose del Monte City, 95 kilometers (about 60 miles) northeast of Manila. Some prayed in front of the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes and others queued at a pool to collect "holy" water believed to cure ailments. The water is piped in from a natural spring. On April 4, a group of women in white sang the Latin hymn “Tantum Ergo,” which is usually sung during adoration of the blessed sacrament. They knelt before the Marian statue and prayed, carrying items they said they use for healing. One woman uses the "cane of Saint Joseph" to "strike out sickness and temptation." Another claimed her "rope of unity" helps settle quarrels. The residents from Bai, just south of Manila, told a television reporter that they go to the grotto every Wednesday during Holy Week to pray for the renewal of their gift of healing and to get healing water from the spring. The grotto, built on a 30-hectare lot in Gaya-Gaya Village, was inspired by the famous grotto in Lourdes, France, where the mother of Philippine grotto owner Marietta Guanzon-Holmgren went for healing of cancer of the uterus in 1961. The grotto and an unfinished church, inaugurated in 1965, are now owned and administered by the Holmgren family. Since the 1960s, it has attracted sick people from around the country, some of whom have donated their crutches, wheelchairs, artificial limbs and other aids after they were reportedly cured. Grotto caretaker Ponciano Sevilla told UCA News that in 1975, there were so many walking aids left at the shrine that they were donated to the Philippine Orthopedic Hospital, northeast of Manila. According to Sevilla, outside the Lenten season, crowds at the shrine are smaller. In 2004 Holmgren asked Malolos Diocese for personnel to supervise religious activities at the grotto. Father Rolando de Leon, vicar forane of the southeast area of the diocese, said two priests and a nun were assigned to administer the grotto, but they left one after another. They reported Holmgren was "meddling" too much in their duties and treating them like "paid employees," Father de Leon told UCA News. He said that in 2005, when the owner did not follow Roman Catholic guidelines on liturgy and worship, Bishop Jose Oliveros of Malolos issued a circular instructing priests to "stop recognizing the grotto church as a Roman Catholic institution." The bishop ordered priests to stop leading religious activities there, Father de Leon added. Holmgren then invited priests from other denominations and Catholic priests "with bad records" to say Mass and officiate in religious rites at the grotto, Father de Leon said. When the bishop found out, priests were asked to announce his instruction at Masses and to advise parishioners to stop going to the grotto and church, Father de Leon said. The priest stressed, however, that the church does not "force" parishioners to stop going to the private grotto or its church. "What we want them to know is that we do not encourage them and that they should know that such a place is no longer a Roman Catholic institution," Father de Leon said. Those who come are firm believers in the grotto's "miraculous" power to heal. Maria Ospelo, 42, has been visiting the grotto for 15 years, after she conceive two children despite physicians telling her there was only a "slim" chance for pregnancy. Teresita Boada, 75, a sweets-shop owner, continues her devotion and "pilgrimage" because her late sister, who visited the spring, lived eight more years after doctors gave her only months to live. Local businesswoman Sally Montehermoso, however, heeds the diocese's warning and discourages friends from visiting the grotto. Catechist Daisy San Gabriel-Santos urges people to "respect the decision of the diocese." She said people go to the grotto believing it is "miraculous," but also called on the owner to "strengthen" her faith. Bulacan province, along with Valenzuela town, in Metro Manila, comprises the Diocese of Malolos, where 85 percent of the 3,120,700 people are Catholics. william :D October 27th, 2012, 04:29 PM https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/242220_148448598633868_1423523635_o.jpg Baliwag Bulacan 1960's click here (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=148448598633868&set=a.104274619717933.8747.100004061858711&type=1) for source william :D October 27th, 2012, 04:31 PM https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/302256_149888385156556_644098728_n.jpg Baliwag, Bulacan Public Market 1994 click here (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=149888385156556&set=a.104271366384925.8739.100004061858711&type=1)for source william :D October 27th, 2012, 05:02 PM Municipality of Calumpit, Bulacan Noong panahon unang Rebolusyon ang mga taga Calumpit ay nakiisa sa pakikidigma sa mga Kastila ,ang bayan ng Calumpit ay naging kampo ni Heneral Luna noong 1898 at noon Abril 25 1899 ay naganap ang isang madugong labanan sa Barrio Bagbag ..at noong Abril 1900 ang Calumpit ay naging ganap naitatag bilang munisiplidad sa ilalim ng pamamahala ng Pilipinas at ang kaunaunahang na halal na Mayor dito ay si Juan Galang. . https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/284448_350156901737979_841655112_n.jpg Bagbag Bridge: Ang pinakamahabang labanan ay naganap dito sa pammumuno ni Hen Gregorio del Pilar . https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/546311_350267451726924_1504185959_n.jpg Ang makasaysayang tulay ng Bagbag.may bahagi ito na bumagsak na dahil sa malakas na lindol noon..ang tulay na ito ay nagpapaalala ng mga maksaaysayang pangyayari ..dito nagkaroon ng mahabang labanan sa pagitan ng mga Pilipino at Amerikano noong Abril 25 1899. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/383294_350267295060273_557494480_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/644403_350436358376700_893605077_n.jpg all credits to the owner (Batang Baliwag) click for source (https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.335226299897706.82001.100002310153757&type=3) william :D January 6th, 2013, 01:49 PM Estacion de Guiguinto 1661 http://www.bulacan.gov.ph/tourism/images/photogallery/p_train1.jpg http://www.bulacan.gov.ph/tourism/images/photogallery/p_train2.jpg http://www.bulacan.gov.ph/tourism/images/photogallery/p_train3.jpg Source (http://www.bulacan.gov.ph/tourism/touristspot.php?id=39) Built in 1661, the Estacion de Guiguinto (Guiguinto Train Station) is the towns most acclaimed historical landmark and heritage site.
