So I was looking around for some info, and I realised that both TN and K'taka had their own thread, but not MH.
I decided, why not create a thread solely to discuss Highway projecfts [both State and National] [only Highways] in this thread.
We can also post about Ring Roads, Bypasses, etc.

Rather old news, but still relevant as it is only 3 months old.
http://www.mid-day.com/news/2012/jul/020712-mumbai-15-flyovers-on-old-Mumbai-Pune-highway-to-cut-travel-time-by-45-min.htm
15 flyovers on old Mumbai-Pune highway to cut travel time by 45 min
In yet another push to bring a marked infrastructure development in improving the connectivity between the two cities — Mumbai and Pune, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has plans to construct around 15 flyovers on the old Mumbai-Pune Highway (NH-4) at an estimated cost of Rs 2,600 crore.

Safety first: The idea behind building the flyovers is to curb accidents along the NH-4. file pIC

The latest initiative was discussed at the recent MSRDC board meeting, which was held last month, and is to be built on the lines of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway, which boasts of flyovers at major junctions.

“Every passing day the volume of traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is increasing, and it is anticipated that in the coming years the old Mumbai-Pune Highway will also witness surge in vehicular traffic. Hence, it is better to plan and have a proper infrastructure in place in advance,” confirmed Arun Deodhar, MSRDC superintending engineer and in-charge of the project.

“The current estimated cost of the project is Rs 2,600 crore, and will be undertaken on a Public-Private Partnership financial model. We intend to complete the project by 2017,” said Deodhar.

According to MSRDC plans, the flyovers will come up at major intersections on the NH-4, though exact locations haven’t been finalised yet. SRDC will appoint an expert committee that will conduct a feasibility study, after which the report will be prepared and tabled before the MSRDC board for final approval. Once approved, the tenders for the project will be invited next year and the construction is expected to be complete in five years. But, the striking benefit for motorists is that they won’t have to pay any additional toll to use the new flyovers.

Cheaper option: Traffic is a major issue on the NH-4, especially on the notorious ghat section. Many motorists use the old highway to reach Lonavala and Pune in order to avoid paying the heavy toll levied for using the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. File pic

Some of the locations or important intersections on NH-4 where these flyovers might be built are Dan Phata, Lodivali, Chowk Naka, Karjat Phata, Ramwadi-Nishiland Park, Nadode Gaon, Khalapur, Ghodawli Phata, Mahad, Palasadhari, Shedwali and Khopoli.

“The idea behind building these flyovers is to curb accident rates at key intersections along the NH-4. As per a survey by our experts, there are several villages along the way and vehicular traffic converges at these junctions, thus making them susceptible to accidents,” explained another MSRDC official, on condition of anonymity.

Presently, traffic is a major issue on the NH-4, especially on the notorious ghat section. Many motorists use the old highway to reach Lonavala and Pune in order to avoid paying the heavy toll levied for using the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. By constructing the flyovers, MSRDC will augment the capacity of the old highway and segregate both the highways connecting the two cities. Currently, vehicles plying on either of the highways share a portion of 16-km between the Khopoli and Lonavala stretch. It is a known fact that the section between Khopoli and Lonavala is notorious for several breakdowns, and many accidents occur due to the steep ascent and sharp turns on the ghat.

It should also be noted that, presently, motorists using the Mumbai-Pune Expressway (MPE) are often stuck in the traffic jams occurring at the ghat section, as the stretch of the old highway bypassing the ghat has been closed.

As the traffic from the old highway converges with MPE at the ghat section, it creates a bottleneck in the area. The issue of taking up this project on priority basis was also discussed at the MSRDC board meeting.

“In order to solve the present traffic problem on the MPE stretch along the ghat, we have plans to construct two tunnels that will start at Khopoli and end just before Lonavala. The project is in its planning stage, and soon we will appoint a Technical Advisory Committee to study the project,” said MSRDC Managing Director and Vice Chairman Bipin Srimali.

As per the proposal, two sets of parallel bridges of 865 and 810 metres (either way) will be constructed, apart from two sets of tunnels measuring 1,620 and 7,755 metres between Khalapur, Khopoli and Sinhagad Technical Education Society (Lonavala).

The tunneling project is part of MSRDC’s expansion plans for the expressway. At present, the expressway has five tunnels and the longest tunnel is at Kamshet, near Pune, which is 1.5 km long. Once completed the tunnel will be the second longest tunnel in the country after the 9km-long tunnel in Rohtang Pass, which at present is the longest road tunnel in India.

Also, the old highway will be widened from four lanes to six lanes. The MPE will also be expanded from six to eight lanes. At present it takes four and half-hours to reach Pune from Mumbai via the NH-4, and once the flyover and tunnel work is complete, it will take three hours and forty-five minutes. This means that motorists will save 45 minutes, and also a lot of fuel that is used while climbing the ghat section. The approximate length of these flyovers will be 300-500 metres, and will be built between Panvel and Pune.

The stretch of NH before it merges with the MPE on the Mumbai side is still two lane.

Is there a new article you can provide for the Ahmednagar-Shirdi-Kopargaon-Yeola-Nashik/Aurangabad four lane? Pretty please? :)

Plan to build 8-km-long tunnels, bridges on Expressway approved

DNA Correspondent

The rising rate of accidents on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has prompted the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to launch measures and approve the 8-km-long tunnels and bridges near Lonavla.

In a review meeting on Wednesday, the corporation approved the Rs2,600-crore project to augment the expressway’s capacity. The proposal will be sent to the cabinet sub-committee for the final nod. The meeting was called after the accident on Monday that killed two Marathi television actors and a 2-year-old child with them.

The project involves setting up of two sets of parallel bridges and tunnels each between Khalapur, Khopoli and Sinhagad Technical Education Society, extending the expressway’s length by nearly 100km.

The MSRDC’s additional safety measures include establishing a trauma care centre on the highway, installing 100 CCTV cameras and signs, reducing sharp curves, banning U-turns and planting trees instead of as crash barriers. Two truck terminals will also be set up for drivers to rest.

“A heliport will be constructed at Ozharade village, for which an agreement has been signed with a farmer for the land,” an officer said.

There were 1,875 accidents reported on the expressway the last year till November 30.

Wider E-way plan won't pinch motorists' pockets
Expect a smoother ride along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, without having to pay more money at the toll naka.

The state’s plans to widen and augment the capacity of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the old Mumbai-Pune Highway will not lead to a hike in toll for motorists using these roads, officials said.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation’s (MSRDC) estimated expenditure is Rs4,500 crore. After widening the road, the vehicle capacity will increase and that will add to the revenue. Hence, the authority won’t increase the toll fare.

Sources told DNA that as part of the Expressway’s capacity augmentation plan, the road will be widened from six lanes to eight lanes. A 12km tunnel will also be constructed between Khopoli and Sinhagad institute.

The expansion of the old highway from four lanes to six lanes has been sent to the cabinet sub-committee on infrastructure for approval.

“Though the project is estimated to cost around Rs4,500 crore, we will not hike the toll charges.
As the vehicular traffic will increase, the additional toll will recover costs of the project,” a source said.

The source added that the MSRDC had a “concession period” or period till the year 2030 to levy toll on those who use their roads.

At present, cars are charged Rs165 for a one-way trip on the Expressway from Mumbai to Pune.

The proposed tunnel will do away with traffic jams on the stretch where the Expressway merges with the old Mumbai-Pune Highway near Lonavala and save around 30 minutes to an hour.

Though the 95-km Expressway has redefined road travel between Mumbai and Pune, 854 people have lost their lives in accidents in the past seven years. MSRDC officials admit that the rising traffic load and lack of capacity have led to service levels slipping from C category (acceptable) from B (good).

There are talks of the old highway being widened to six lanes from Dehu Road to Nigdi at the Pune end and from Kalamboli to Shil near Mumbai. Facilities like footpaths and interchanges will also be constructed.

Scanners to detect lane cutters automatically to be installed on MPE

Safety on Mumbai-Pune Expressway gets a boost
Another Rs16.35 crore will be used to install Brifen Rope Wires on the median of the entire 95-km stretch of the road connecting the two cities.

The budget of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) indicates that groundwork for augmenting Mumbai-Pune Expressway’s capacity will not happen this year. But, installation of safety and security systems will not wait for next year.

According to the capital expenditure prepared by the corporation for the 2013-14 fiscal, only Rs1 crore has been marked for augmentation proposal.

The plan includes widening the Expressway and Old Mumbai-Pune Highway, segregate both highways, extend the expressway towards Pune, construction of two tunnels (one below Bhushi Dam) and building 15-20 flyovers. But, the frequency of accidents is a cause for concern, thus installation of surveillance and safety systems will begin this year. “A sum of Rs40 crore has been kept aside for surveillance project on the expressway,” said an official from MSRDC.

Another Rs16.35 crore will be used to install Brifen Rope Wires on the median of the entire 95-km stretch of the road connecting the two cities.

On Sunday, two vehicles collided near Kamshet, killing two people and injuring three.Motorists will not have any new roads for at least a year. There are plans to have a theme park and Formula 1 track adjoining the expressway, but it is in the nascent stage.

A sum of Rs15 lakh has been allocated for the theme park and and Rs5 crore for developing the racing track. A cricket stadium has already come up at the Pune-end of the road.

Problem continues on old highway
There seems to be no end to problems for the old Pune-Mumbai highway, which has two lanes on most parts and only one lane on some patches.

A senior officer with the State Highway Police (SHP) said, "The notification that has come for the Pune district needs to be brought out for all the highways in the state. We feel that the necessary infrastructural changes should be carried out."

Prashant Mohite, SP with the Thane division of the SHP said, "On most part of the stretch, the old highway has two lanes on one direction. In some patches, specially in the Ghat section it shrinks to one lane. Implementing the lane discipline is always a challenge but its needs to be done on priority basis."

Sub inspector L V Bhosale, who is in-charge of the Borghat section of the highway police said, "Another important requirement for maintaining lane discipline is having medians (road dividers) without breaks. IN the absence of road dividers, vehicles tend to crossover to opposite lanes. Vehicles get plenty of room to flout lane norms then."

New Expressway norms run into trouble
Even AS the district collectorate has come out with a draft notification making it compulsory for heavy vehicles to travel only on the extreme left lane of the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, and the right lane for overtaking, highway police said that the rule can only be implemented if some basic changes are made in the structure of the highway. The highway police have been demanding the changes since many years.
The highway police had submitted a proposal with a legal framework of the highway to district collectors of Pune and Thane. The Pune-Mumbai Expressway and the Pune-Mumbai highway stretch across the two districts.

Based on the proposal, the Pune district collector issued a draft notification as per different road traffic laws. It says all heavy vehicles will use the left lane and the central lane will be for light vehicles. The right lane will only be used for overtaking. Barring a few kms in the Ghat section, 94-km of the Pune-Mumbai Expressway has three lanes.

Dilip Bhujbal, superintendent with the Pune division of the State Highway Police (SHP), said, "There is no provision to make the left lane compulsory for heavy vehicles. The rule cannot be implemented unless some basic changes are made in the structure of the highway."

Prashant Mohite, SP with the Thane division of the SHP, said, "Amrutanjan bridge is the biggest obstacle. Heavy vehicles have to shift lanes to take a turn as the structure of the turn is weird."

Another officer with the highway police said, "The width of the six major curves on the Expressway, three in Pune division and three in Thane division, needs to be increased. We have been pursuing this matter with the MSRDC (Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation) and IRB. Amrutanjan bridge needs major structural changes. It has several sharp curves that needs to be altered. We know that these changes are difficult to make but it has to be done as people's lives are at stake."

Mohite added, "The logical step would be to install CCTV cameras to monitor whose who flout rules. These cameras need to be installed at regular intervals." Bhujbal said, "We have also asked for parking bays for heavy vehicles. On the small patches where there are only two lanes on the Expressway, left will be for heavy vehicles and right will be for small vehicles and overtaking." Two wheelers are not allowed on the Expressway.

At present, the notification is only for the Pune district. Officers said notification for Thane was awaited, and communication is on with the district administration.
