Its Jordanian not German... The company is called ELBA, Iraqi ministry of transport owns over 60% of its shares in Jordan, also Iraq is the main customer and basically it is owned by the govt. of Iraq.

All aboard! Double-decker bus makes Baghdad comeback
28 May, 2012
More often seen speeding past Trafalgar Square, British-style double-decker buses are making a comeback in Baghdad, the latest sign that Iraq's capital is on the road to recovery after years of war and sanctions.

Once a common sight during Saddam Hussein's rule before the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, Iraq's old red double-deckers all but disappeared from use when looting, sectarian violence, and attacks engulfed the Iraqi capital at the height of the war.

Baghdad is still chaotic, with traffic crawling along rubble-filled roads and through security checkpoints that protect government compounds. But the new air-conditioned buses are a relief for long-suffering residents.

"They disappeared after the occupation, but it's good to see them back," said passenger Basil Hashim, an Arabic language teacher taking one of the new routes in central Baghdad. "It makes it feel like Baghdad is like any other capital."

Iraq's transport ministry says 60 new double-decker buses, made in Jordan, will start running this week on state-run lines. The 500 Iraqi dinar (40 U.S. cents) ticket is half the price of a ride in one of the city's often dilapidated, packed taxis.

Nine years after the U.S.-led invasion ousted Saddam, Iraq's capital is still messy. Residents rely on generators to compensate for patchy power service, infrastructure is crumbling, and violence remains a constant risk with Sunni Islamist insurgents fighting the state.

Iraq's government has ambitious plans for major projects from a high-speed train to a metro line. But in a city where corruption is rife and paving a single main street can take years, many Iraqis dismiss those plans with skepticism.

Still, as attacks and bombings have ebbed, Baghdad is slowly coming back to life. Along the Tigris river in the city's Abu Nawas street, playgrounds, football pitches and restaurants selling Baghdad's famous fish dish Masgoof thrive at weekends.

City officials have started taking down many of the tall blast walls that once made Baghdad a maze of concrete.

Baghdad's old double-deckers, were either stolen, or gradually fell into disrepair, as Iraq struggled with the violence that erupted after the invasion. More than 300 old buses were dumped in a north Baghdad scrapyard.

Bringing new buses back to Baghdad has not been without its problems. Speed bumps at security checkpoints and the make-shift electricity wiring that crisscrosses in low-slung webs across many Baghdad streets has proven tricky.

A mortar attack a few days before the buses started running killed one person and wounded six people along Sadoun street area, in a reminder of the fragile security.

But in a city where summer temperatures can sneak over 50 degrees Celsius, the air-conditioned double-deckers offer an alternative to a taxi ride squeezed in with other passengers or one of the fleet of competing minibuses.

"It's a lot of competition for sure. But they are slow," said taxi driver Abdul Salam Hamil, his passengers sweltering in his battered 1980 white Toyota. "In the end, there is enough for everyone, we get our livelihood and they get theirs

Japanese Companies Seek Partnerships With Turks In Iraq
Japanese companies want to set up partnerships with Turkish enterprises operating in Iraq’s energy and transport industries, said Keiichi Kohama, deputy managing director and chief representative of the Iraq Desk at the Japan Cooperation Center for the Middle East in Baghdad.
“There are so many projects on Iraq, in sectors like transport, oil and gas, electricity and infrastructure,” Kohama said in an interview today at the official opening of the JCCME in Baghdad. Japanese business executives and government officials will meet their Turkish counterparts on July 5 in Istanbul to discuss partnerships, he said.
Japanese companies want to invest in power generation, the oil and gas industry, health projects and infrastructure work, Sami al-Araji, chairman of Iraq’s National Investment Commission, said at the JCCME opening.
Iraq has the fifth-biggest gas reserves in the Middle East and the world’s fifth-largest crude oil deposits, according to data from BP Plc. (BP/) The government is seeking foreign investment and expertise to help rebuild an economy and infrastructure damaged by years of conflict, sanctions and underinvestment.

The buses have remote-controlled shut-down devices that stop the engine if the driver changes route [Ahmed A. Fadaam/Al Jazeera]
Baghdad, Iraq - On a hot summer day, Iraqi passengers are enjoying for the first time in decades their trip through the city of Baghdad in the brand-new, fully air-conditioned Jordanian-made Elba buses.

Seeing these luxurious double-decker buses in the main streets of Baghdad is something that many Iraqis hoped would in some way bring back the city some of its former glory. "It is a sign of hope to have order and stability back," said Abu Ali, a 65-year-old retired government employee. "It is a start, and few is better than nothing. I hope to see more buses in the streets, and traffic to be more organised, and to see all the roadblocks removed."

Mohammed, a labourer, said that he intended to take the bus just to see if the word was true. "This is very comfortable. I wish they increase the number of buses: people want to feel comfortable while travelling in the city."

Even the drivers, some of them who had served since the days of the embargo, are enjoying their new toys.

Drivers of the new buses can monitor eight cameras [Ahmed A. Fadaam/Al Jazeera]
Hussain, who had been working as a bus driver for more than 25 years, said that the new buses are really cool. "I have eight cameras in my bus that allow me to see everything going on inside the bus. I have a GPS system, an electronic ticket reader which will be activated soon, and a communication system that allows me to call the main station if anything goes wrong."

The bad thing about these buses, according to Hussain, is that they are equipped with a remote-controlled shut-down device that allows the main station to stop the bus engine if the driver decides to change route.

But for the passengers, this doesn't matter: what really matters for them is the cool air they feel coming out from the vents of the bus.

Raed, a trader, said that he hadn't taken a bus in decades. "The old buses were a mess: there was no order, no maintenance, taking the bus was like a torture." Now, he said, "I'm enjoying the air-conditioning of the new buses".

But even this doesn't always happen - not in a city like Baghdad, where roadblocks and checkpoints are filling its streets. After ten minutes from the launching point, the bus was stopped by a traffic police roadblock. The policeman ordered the bus driver to change his route, but the driver told the policeman that he could not do that because of the GPS system, which would cause the main station to shut down his engine. Nevertheless, he was forced to turn back, and this was the end of Raed's short relaxation in the new air-conditioned bus.

I had a similar conversation with a couple of arab dudes coming to Basra working for ARAB CONTRACTORS CO. and it was on the plane, they were making fun of Iraq and how stupid the ppl are, uneducated, ignorant, easy to fool when it comes to technology and many other stuff, when they saw the BSC main road from above... they said: "At least they have one decent road there..." I wouldn't say they were wrong... they were right actually. But still they were getting paid a shit load of money just for being there... so some respect was still a good thing. So I simply said and in English: "Its true these ppl are so ignorant and easy to fool, but lets hope none of you guys end up with a couple of bullets in the head for messing around with them.. it is easier for a human being to be shot here than a chicken". That stunned them and made them shut the fuck up for the rest of the flight.

A joint bid by Baghdad-based Fourth Dimension and British software firm Copperchase has won a $125m contract to develop and expand the international airport in the holy city of Najaf, reported Zawya.

The airport currently handles 20 flights a day servicing Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Kuwait, India and Bahrain. This number can rise to 45 on religious occasions, as Najaf receives millions of pilgrims.

"The project is a 20-year build, operate and transfer agreement and will includes updating equipment, expanding the apron, construction of a new runway and improving mechanisms for dealing with more traffic," detailed an anonymous member of the Najaf Provincial Council (NPC).

The contractor will keep 65% of the annual profits while NPC will receive the rest.

Najaf’s airport was constructed by Aqeeq Aviation, a Kuwaiti company, in 2006, under a contract to operate the airport for five years in a deal valued at $50m. Aqeeq also bid for the expansion.

Iraq has four civilian airports. The largest of these is in Baghdad, and the others are in Basra and Mosul. The official said NPC expects the expanded airport to generate annual profits of up to $17m.

Dr. Ahmed Al-Atwani, an economics professor at the University of Wasit, told Zawya said that Iraq seriously needs new airports and to expand existing sites.

"The country has more than 32 million people and only six airports," he said.

Iraq holds talks with German companies on modernising traffic systems

2012-12-04

The Iraqi government on Tuesday (December 4th) said that official Iraqi-German talks are under way to negotiate a long-term partnership agreement through which Germany would help develop Iraq's transportation and traffic sectors.

"An Iraqi technical delegation representing a number of ministries began intensive talks in Germany with the Safarkovski group of companies to sign a contract to develop external and internal roads in the capital Baghdad and other provinces across the country," said Salam al-Quraishi, economic advisor to the Iraqi government.

Projects could include "building a unified electronic system, linking [that system] with modern traffic signs that can be remotely controlled and modernising traffic systems to keep up with the current systems used in the world, given that the current traffic system in Iraq is outdated", he said.

The two countries are also discussing building a factory to make traffic lights, signage and special paints for streets and internal and external roads, he said.

"Talks are positive, as these companies have initially agreed to help Iraq," al-Quraishi said. "We are currently discussing the required details to sign the agreement."
