credit that to the late gov. marañon. he's instrumental in not only transferring back the governor's office and other offices under it but at the same time restored it back to its grandiose form. it used to house the negros museum while the provincial offices including the governor's office was housed at the provincial administration building situated right across it.

Good to hear that! Although I understand it was quite controversial since it was built within the Arroceros. SM, should have built a neoclassical or chose a design similar to this one.

yaps, white paint is still the best IMO...:)
white is a nice color for neoclassical buildings...
sana lahat na lang ng neoclassical buildings sa Pilipinas, kahit hindi government buildings, ay kulay white... para magandang tingnan...

i wish they spent the money on original filipino building designs than exacting something that already exist somewhere else in the world. im not sure if that was the main intention of the planners to mimic world reknown designs.

The question though: What is an original "Filipino" building design? Because if we could look closer with the "Bahay na Bato" style, it's a hybrid of indigenous "bahay kubo" and "European."
So what's an "original Filipino building design?" The term "Filipino" is even from foreign origin. :colgate:

I definitely agree. ^^
As I have seen only some of those provinces in Mindanao and in Nor.Luzon have unique architectural designs (e.g. Batanes, Cordillera, ARMM). Filipino architecture in general is the "bahay kubo" or maybe "tree house" or a cave.

The style is called Neoclassical or new classical and is found all over the world. I disagree that the Bacolod Government Center was a copy of the White House because that itself was inspired by classicism or the civilizations of Greece and Rome. These civilizations brought us many ideas about government, nationhood and the law. I personally believe the style befits government buildings as it conveys the ideas of stability, order, and permanence.
Neoclassical, or "new" classical, architecture describes buildings that are inspired by the classical architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. A Neoclassical building is likely to have some (but not necessarily all) of these features:
Symmetrical shape
Tall columns that rise the full height of the building
Triangular pediment
Domed roof
During the 1500s, the famous Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio awakened an interest in the architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. Palladio's ideas became the model for architecture in Europe for many centuries. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, the newly-formed United States drew upon classical ideals to construct grand government buildings as well as smaller private homes.
The word Neoclassical is often used to describe an architectural style, but Neoclassicism is not actually any one distinct style. Neoclassicism is a trend, or approach to design, that can describe several very different styles.

I think this would qualify as Filipino architecture. The lower half is enhanced with stone similar to bahay na bato. and the roof design is very asian/balinese. Asian/balinese design is similar to Mindanaoan.

Which reminds me of the Marcos days when almost all of the airports have the same theme.
Mindanaoan theme seems to be more appropriate. Perhaps like the Maranao torogan and the dominance of okir.
But we cannot deny that we Filipinos have integrated influence from other cultures as well. I heard from several of my foreigner friends that the Philippines is very "westernised." I dunno about their opinion/perspective though but it somehow seems to be right.
A product of 400 years of being colonised by western powers is sure one big thing in making the current Philippine history and society.
In the end, I really couldn't blame whether a capitol or a city hall/town hall has imitated western architecture and some other famed landmarks, because if we look at the past, we have been doing this so.
Also, let the architects' imagination go free. There are a lot of cities there right now that needs a new government center too. So I guess it's not too late. But for now, we cannot please all people, in the end it'll still serve it's purpose: as an office of the state and local management for the people.

well, that's 300 years of convent and 50 years of hollywood, what would you expect our answers be?
basing from the pics above, i don't think these great buildings of our asian neighbors don't make them less in grandeur and sophistication than their european counterparts. what's important i guess is the role that these buildings played in their nation's history that made them national treasures. and that's what the bacolod NGC is also trying to achieve as catalyst for our city's advance to progress.:) so for me, its not an issue and never will be an issue.

Come to think of this amigo...
333 years under the Kingdom of Spain
47 years under the Commonwealth of the United States of America
the buildings of these influences are visible in Escolta, Intramuros, Sta Cruz, Quiapo, Sampaloc, Malate and Ermita. Doesn't the Bacolod City Gov't Center fit-in with them? Romanesque-Neo Classical-Modern, etc etc etc are all showcased in and out of the Bacolod Government Center. It spans time and colonial influence so it doesn't skew from the "Filipino-architecture". Genuine Filipino signature is an evolution of a mixture of colonial influence. ^^

MatudNilaBaby August 12th, 2009, 08:19 PM I really love Cebu's City Hall coz it's like a nice blend of modern and old.................. especially that it's surrouonding plaza is clean and are cool..............:banana::banana:
at least that massive old cebu city hall structure is orig in design cuz it doesnt resemble any well known building although we could say that its influenced by the american occupation in the island.
_leonell_ August 13th, 2009, 02:49 AM Good, good. hehe..
In any case, who else is of the opinion of uprooting the Heritage of Cebu monument and putting it in Plaza Sugbo? Hehehehehe.
That's near impossible........ the heritage monument is erected somewhere near the Colon Obelisk. Well, we can put a statue of Tommy 'O on Plaza Sugbo can't we? It's considerable since he's brought a lot of change in the city?
I've got a wierder idea!:nuts::nuts: Why don't we carve the faces of our mayors on the mountains of Cebu just like South Dakota in America? Isn't it time we place another tourist icon in the City? It's fun!:banana::banana:

SUV111 August 13th, 2009, 03:22 PM A bahay kubo city hall would not withstand greater than 120 kph winds of 20 typhoons a year in the Philippines. Maybe an Ivatan architecture of Batanes would do :lol::lol:
i know it cant withstahd strong winds migs but i was just setting that as an example of a filipino architecture coz for me, Theres really no definite design that can make filipino architecture distinct from the rest....like what you've said...Filipino Architecture is an evolution of a mixture of colonial influence...and i totally agree with it :)

viva la raza October 1st, 2009, 10:46 AM Once completed, Tagum City Hall would be my bet for the best looking City Hall building in the country. Right now its Bacolod City.
zoroethgenre_003 October 1st, 2009, 11:40 AM it depends on the standards..how do you define good -looking..maybe what's good looking for you, is not good looking for others..

A nice blend of Greek-Romanesque Architecture are my favorite Government buildings. They look so beautiful!
zoroethgenre_003 October 1st, 2009, 03:13 PM For me naman, i prefer modern-looking buildings..thus making it really relative..

Pimentel opposes Senate move to Film Center
By Leila Salaverria
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines—Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr. is not afraid of ghosts, but he is concerned about the Senate’s moving to the supposedly haunted Film Center.
Pimentel said the edifice, which was built nearly three decades ago amid much controversy, may not be structurally sound.
“I wonder whether that's a good idea. Aside from the ghosts, maybe the structure, that's what I'm worried about, whether that is safe,” Pimentel told reporters at the Kapihan sa Sulo forum.
He also said he does not believe in the ghost stories about the building.
The Film Center has remained largely unused after it was hastily built for the 1982 Manila International Film Festival of the former first lady Imelda Marcos. During the center's construction, an upper floor collapsed and buried an undedetermined number of construction workers alive. Some bodies were recovered but the authorities then could not say exactly how many had been buried.
Rumors that their ghosts haunt the center continue to abound.
Senate Majority Leader Miguel Zubiri earlier said the Senate was in talks with the Cultural Center of the Philippines about leasing the Film Center in order to save on rent. At present, the Senate occupies a building in Pasay City owned by the Government Service Insurance System and pays about P120 million a year in rent.
Pimentel said that if the Senate wants to move to a new place, it should draw up plans with the House of Representatives so that the two legislative chambers could hold office in a single compound.
The House of Representatives' offices are at the Batasang Pambansa complex in Quezon City.
Such an arrangement could fast-track legislation, since meetings between senators and representatives could be held immediately, instead of these meetings taking several days just to schedule, he added.
“I think that's the ideal situation. They should not be apart,” he said.
Pimentel recalled that when he was Senate President, he had spoken to President Macapagal Arroyo about the acquisition of 10 hectares in Fort Bonifacio on which to relocate Congress.
Ms Arroyo approved his request, but when Pimentel was no longer Senate President, the proposal was forgotten.
Pimentel believes there could be a feasible arrangement with contractors about the construction of a new building for the Senate. For example, a build-operate-transfer agreement could be worked out, with the rent being guaranteed to the contractors, he added.

Jusmag lot auction readied
by Elaine Ramos Alanguilan
State-owned Bases Conversion and Development Authority will be putting up the 35-hectare Jusmag property in Fort Bonifacio in the auction block this year.
Aileen Zosa, vice president for business development of BCDA, said the Jusmag property has been initially valued at P20,000 per square meter.
“We want to masterplan the whole area into Bonifacio South to maximize land values and big developers can give us good price. The Jusmag property is initially valued at P20,000 per sq. m. on a raw land basis but the minimum bid offer could be higher with the master plan,” said Zosa.
The 35-hectare property is located near the high-rise condominium Essensa, the posh Forbes Park and right across the headquarters of the Philippine Army.
Zosa said developable land in the proposed Bonifacio South is about 93 hectares, with the Jusmag property accounting for nearly half of the entire area.
She said the auction for the Jusmag property is the first phase of Bonifacio South. Part of the master plan is to widen Lawton Avenue, the main road artery in Fort Bonifacio.
She said the proposed Bonifacio South would be mixed-use development and include cultural, convention center and arts centers, institutional and government offices, “which are usually forgotten in the quest for profits in real estate development."

Robinsons Place Iloilo for Executive and bureaucratic & Iloilo Terminal Market for Legislative Area.
By the time it finishes (they are expecting to start constructing by end 2009), all city offices will be under one roof...FINALLY!!!
It's been a long time since Iloilo had a decent city hall...they gave up the old city hall for UP and acquired that building at Plaza Libertad.

habagatcentral1 October 7th, 2009, 04:26 AM ^^ Indeed it is a heritage site. It has been recently recognized as one by law thru the NHI plaque last year that was installed in the building.
The plan was to have that city hall in front of a reflecting pool that resonates Burnham Park and Washington's Mall. However, WW2 came.
