An agreement for industrial collaboration with Poland will be signed Wednesday during a meeting slated to take place in Warsaw between Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz and the Polish Economy Minister, Jerzy Hausner.

According to the plan, Poland's land forces will be equipped with 2765 missile and 264 personal launchers over the next 10 years, at a total cost of about $255 million.

The missiles will be sold in two models: personal launcher and a vehicle-mounted one. In addition, the Polish army plans to mount the launchers on armored cars manufactured in Finland.

Mofaz signed an agreement for strategic dialogue between Israel and Poland in his meeting in Warsaw Monday with Poland's Defense Ministry, Jerzy Szmadjdzinksi.

The two men discussed a range of bilateral strategic issues, including the situation in the Middle East, global terrorism, and security, military and industrial cooperation between the two countries.

Mofaz will continue his itinerary tomorrow to Italy, where he will meet Defense Minister Antonio Martino as part of the strategic dialogue between the two countries.

The defense minister's entourage includes the ministry's director-general, Amos Yaron, and head of the Political and Security Division, Amos Gilad.

Mofaz stressed in conversation with Szmadjdzinksi that "Israel and Poland's defense ministries maintain an important strategic dialogue and close military and industrial relations. We expect cooperation to continue at all levels, and thank the Polish government for the part played by Polish soldiers in the service of the UN in our region."

The ministers signed the agreement at the end of the meeting, and Mofaz invited his colleague to visit Israel. Mofaz later visited the landed forces headquarters, and delivered the first Israeli produced LR Spike anti-tank missiles, which were purchased by the Polish army, through an industrial collaboration with the Mesko company of the Bumar group.

Mofaz signs arms deal with Poland & Italy

Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz left Tuesday for Poland and Italy to discuss strategic cooperation and sign memorandums of understanding. There is a chance he may continue to the US next week.

In an official ceremony following his visit with the Polish army ground forces on Tuesday, Mofaz handed over the first Israeli made Spike LR anti tank rocket, one of 2765 rockets Poland intends to purchase for its army from Israel. Poland is in the midst of upgrading its military as part of its integration into NATO, and Israel sees it as a ripe market for industrial cooperation and sales.

In an agreement signed between the two countries to the tune of $255 million, spreading out over a ten year period, Poland will receive the rockets made by the Refael military industries in conjunction with the Mesko company of the Bumar concern, in addition to 264 personal launchers.

According to details released by the Defense Ministry, the spike rockets purchased by Poland can be carried by soldiers or placed on military vehicles. Poland also plans to fit the rockets on armored personnel carriers purchased from Finland.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mofaz said, "The rockets will enhance your capability to deal with threats; take the rockets and train your forces to operate them and be ready and prepared to use them, but we pray that you will never need to."

Polish Defense Minister Jerzy Szmajdzinski noted the significance of the event for the two countries.

"Today is a special day for Poland," Szmajdzinski said. "It sends out a special message to the people of Poland that today our army has a far higher capability."

Prior to the ceremony, Mofaz signed an agreement with Szmajdzinski enhancing bilateral ties and defense and military cooperation between the two countries. At a meeting the two discussed the situation in the Middle East, global terror and industrial ties between both countries.

On Wednesday, Mofaz will sign an agreement enhancing industrial ties between the countries at a meeting with the Polish Minister of Finance Jerzy Hausner .

After his two-day visit to Poland, Mofaz is to travel to Italy for four days. He is to be hosted by his Italian counterpart, Antonio Martino, and meet with Italian leaders. The visit comes after Israel and Italy reportedly agreed to invest $140 million to develop a new electronic system to disable enemy aircraft. Defense officials said this project would be one of several that Mofaz is to discuss during his visit.

Accompanying Mofaz will be ministry Director-General Amos Yaron and Amos Gilad, ministry head of foreign relations.

Relations between Israel and Italy have improved substantially against the background of the shared support the governments have given to the US-led war on terrorism. Almost alone among European leaders, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has backed Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's hard-line stance toward the Palestinians virtually without reservation.

The new electronic warfare system is meant to provide Israeli and Italian fighter aircraft with the ability to identify threats from enemy planes and to neutralize their offensive capabilities, an Israeli defense official told AP.

They said that each plane equipped with the system would be able to operate against several enemy aircraft over a wide swath of airspace, leaving accompanying planes free to carry out offensive maneuvers.
