The winning proposal for "Saules akmens"
Back in the ancient 2001 year Hansabanka organised tender for their new office building. The winning proposal was elaborated by fine architect company "Depo projekts" and it was named "Saules akmens". The building was shaped like a large stone... most likely it was meant to be large piece of amber.
Proposal had some 15 floors, if I remember correctly.

"Stjernecentret" is probably the largest Danish highrise proposal that was never built. It was supposed to be build in Århus in the late 80s/early 90s and was actually approved. The height was 150 m. with different floor numbers and planned usages. The design was also changed several times.
The arcitect was Jørn Utzon (Sydney Opera House) and his son.
And the renderings:

Scandinavian Tower in Malmö, 274 m to roof (325 with antenna), 85 floors with hotelrooms. Was cancelled this year. If built, it would have been the tallest skyscraper in Europe.

Interesting projects. That proposal of "Saules akmens" looks nice but I think the "Saules akmens" which stands in Riga today looks a lot better.

150meters tall Flatscreen was canceled (1990) because of the recession. The Flascreen plot located almost next to Itämerentori.

That's the only image I found :(
Ober told me that there were plans to build a 30 (or was it 40?) storey hotel to the Keilaniemi, Espoo. It was canceled because of the same reason that Flatscreen.

Here's some projects that were never realized, no pics though:
1920s-30s:
Several high-rise projects planned to the city downtown
1970s:
150m tall Fortum headoffice was cut to 87m
1980s:
- 100m high-rise in Helsinki downtown
- 150m "Flatscreen" high-rise
- Four 40 story skyscrapers in Tampere (all projects were killed by the economic depression)
@ sdes
If I remember correctly, it was 30 stories.

Might be that they will be built in two years or so,like you said(like Tartu mnt.15 and Tornimäe Towers-I first heard about them like 3 years ago)
Well lets hope that...
I got the picture of your post in Tallinn development thread and I guessed it is yours...

@Ober
Nice list, "- 100m high-rise in Helsinki downtown" I haven't heard about that one before. :)
I would like to add to the "1980s:" list:
-102m tall Maamerkki was cut to 82m :(
And 1990:
>100m Cirrus was cut down to 92m

Does anybody have renderings of the first SBA tower proposals back in July 2003? The tallest one was pretty impressive :)
BTW, my interest in the competition for SBA tower design was the reason why I found Skyscrapercity :)

how could a 150m masterpiece of a tower turn into a 12 storey midrise?
John
November 18th, 2004, 03:54 PM
@ch1le
they wouldn't allow to build such a tall building in this location. It also seems that SBA decided to decrease the floorspace from ~35,000m2 to 7,000m2 :(
Anyway the current building is going to be a really nice one (unless they would change the project what I hope is not going to happen).

In order to revive this thread - two more non-realised highrises in Riga
1. Riga City Council, 1939
http://img95.exs.cx/img95/5360/p5sratslaukumaparbuv.jpg
This facade faces Daugava. In order to build it there were destroyed several quartals in Old City in 1939 - 1940. Then started war and the idea was not realised. The tower of City Council is very high - but I do not remember how high it was. At least 150 meters - but most likely conisderably higher.
In general - I am very glad that it was not realised. This concept is just boring. I am completely sure that the new project to come will be much better.
2. End of 1960ies, general plan of Riga.
http://img95.exs.cx/img95/7213/e2hcentradebesskrapj.jpg
Only Hotel Latvia was built out of these highrises. Further away, in place of modern Dailes theater there was planned also 30+ highrise.
Behind Hotel latvia goes Dzirnavu Street. Project planned to make it 3 times wider, destroying more than 100 Art Nouveau buildings. The place where the other highrises were planned also has lots of valuable buildings.
Again - I am very glad that this was not realised.
In early 1970ies local and Moscow architects criticised this concept. Only Hotel Latvia was built - and nearly nobody liked it.

I'm really trying to find some pictures of this project but it has been very hard and so far I have none, but here's the short and sad story anyway:
Four 40-story skyscrapers, a huge round-shaped building and a few triangle-shaped buildings. This is what Tampella area would look in Tampere today if the visions would've came true. Those 40-story buildings would've been about the same height as Näsinneula observation tower (168m).
The area was planned by architect Timo Penttilä in 1989. The project was named Tampere's Manhattan, Tamhattan or Turhattan (the lastest propably invented by the people who were against it, a rough translations would be like uselesshattan or something :) ). The planned area was 26 hectares and the planned floorspace was 420 000-570 000m2.
Tampere city council voted YES to the plan (56-8, two empty, one absent) in 1989. The NO-voters were from Green party (of course) and one man/female from People's democrat-party. The citizens opposing the project were watching the vote/meeting at the balcony and threw roses to the people who voted no. (goddamn idiots, it's been more than 10 years and no progress yet :) ).
Later in the year 1989 there were seven complains left of the plan to the provincial justice. In 1990 the really weird and sad thing happened: The provincial justice invalidates the city councils decision because of FORMAL THINGS: The substitute-coucil members were invited to the hall in wrong order, and two officers were involved in the planning who were "non-competent".
So there went that plan. Nowadays the buildings are mainly 4-8 floors high and the tallest building will be Fenix Sirius which will be 15 floors. The construction still goes on today.

Seems, Scandinavia had opportunity to get really fine towers. That one in Bergen is absolutely fabulous. Can we move it to Riga, next to Riga Arena? ;)
(Although that arena in Bergen looks way cooler than the arena in Riga)

Now for some Sthlm never-beens, all for the same site (at SergelsTorg in the heart of Sthlm) since they're from the same competition. Nothing was built, in fact the 3s building has been removed to be replaced by a new exit from the subway.

60 m and 38 stories? What were the architects thinking? Floor-to-floor is 1,59 m, something is wrong there I guess...
Btw - of all the buildings, I like the first one best, or maybe Wingårdh's. :)
