Emporio Apartments:

No wonder the site is still lying dormant and the sales office is “temporarily” closed. Emporio isn’t going to be marketed until Feb/Mar next year. I was informed by a representative over the telephone that even if only 30% of apartments are sold off the plan after the Feb/Mar launch, it will still be constructed, taking approx. 2 years to complete. There will be 155 apartments in all.

Bullecourt, Ultimo:

2 days ago, there were 4 x excavators (track hoes) furiously digging the foundations. Also on site was a concrete pump (one of the praying mantis looking operatus).

Concrete pump:

http://www.amerilease.com/services/concrete/concrete03.jpg

Bullecourt consists of 2 relatively long apartment buildings with a public space in between. A 6 storey above ground building fronting Harris Street and a 9/10 storey one along Pyrmont Road. There will be 3 storeys underground. Completion is due for mid 2004 and just over 80% of apartments have been sold off the plan.

Pyrmont Road Building:

http://www.australand.com.au/images/bullecourt_intro2.jpg

BTW The site next door where H***y's Aquatic Centre is supposed to be going, is still a grassy and bushy knoll. It is anticipated to be completed by 2005. Possibly coming pre-fab:

http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/hs-north-sect.jpg

The Common:

This apartment building to be constructed on Commonwealth Street downtown was supposed to start construction last Sept. or Oct…….it is now supposedly starting in Feb. next year and will take 18-20 months to complete if all goes smoothly.

Now I was told when I called into the sales office last July that there weren’t many apartments left, “so hurry!” Again on the phone this week, i was told that there are only about 4 apartments left and that 95% have been sold, “so hurry!”. Yet week after week after week we see clearly in S.M.H.’s Domain that The Common still advertises 1, 2 and 3 storey apartments. Hmmmmmmmm.

Something tells me not all is going smoothly down on Commonwealth Street. Time will tell.

BTW The flash web site is The Common (http://www.thecommon.com.au/index.asp)

Check out the "Lifestyle" option. LOL

I don't get it - why is Sydney building another big Aquatic Centre - what is wrong with the one left from the Olympics?

Dan, this is a local aquatic centre, being built to service the residents of the densley populated Ultimo/Pyrmont area.

Emporio is currently red on the city model even though there is no construction. Culwulla is checking out why at present. It should really be grey.

Muse

The Common HAS to go ahead. It is such a great design.

Just found out that the Sydney Aquatic Centre IS going ahead. A builder will be negotiated around March next year, so we should see some action happening on the site around mid next year. If all goes smoothly, the anticipated completion date still stands at early 2005.

The trusses will be manufactured off site, but the rest is construction site as usual. Not much fab pre-fab at all really.

I noticed last week at the model room last week that the Emporio model was still red. Will it be painted grey when you return to work Culwulla?

Anywhere near the water tends to be sandstone. So along the whole coast basically, around the harbour, around Middle Harbour around rivers like the Hawkesbury, Georges, Lane Cove, Port Hacking etc.

Love the Sydney Sandstone!!!!. Melbourne liked it so much, tonnes and tonnes were hauled down there in 1926 to build the St Pauls Cathedral spires!!! it has a real orange glow about it and as it ages the dif tones come through!!

just on the Common, the developers asked if i could colour the council model red in two weeks!! lol. i said sure!! so in other words it starts construction! yet another res tower for Sydney!! woohoo!!

All I can say is our Aquatic Centre is taking a bit too long to be built. This thing's taking forever

why is Sydney building another big Aquatic Centre - what is wrong with the one left from the Olympics?

... The only thing wrong is that the one out at Homebush is too bloody far away! Being the lazy sod I am, I'd rather walk the two blocks to get to the one in Ultimo .... I'd need a packed lunch & passport to get to Homebush! ;)

I dont think that the Ultimo Aquatic Centre is as big as the one out at Homebush - Sydney actually has many more aquatic centres that are larger than Ultimo will be, and have more facilities than Homebush even!

Sutherland Leisure Centre for example in the southern suburbs is where Ian Thorpe trains, and is a big complex including many indoor and outdoor pools.

The Hurstville Aquatic Leisure Centre near me is also undergoing a big expansion, and even the Cook and Phillip Park Leisure Centre in the CBD is pretty big.

Update on Bullecourt:

Passed the site @ approx. 4.30PM and a huge Barclay-Mowlem crane is now about to be fully operational over the next week and it is placed in a deep pit.

Constuction should finally begin on the site after remaning dormat for over a month.

This is good news :okay: !!

The display suite @ The Common is NEVER open - I've passed about 4 times during business hours and no sign is even on the door. All the sales signs are still up to give the illusion "business as usual" though.

They were initially going to start construction last November, then Feb/Mar, then it was April.

I think they's done a runner with everyone's deposits. Hrmmmm.

There are now 2 tower cranes on the Bullecourt site.

BTW Rang The Common's sales office the other day and the reason it hasn't started to built as yet is because they are finding it difficult to find enough construction staff at the moment. Is it any wonder with all the major projects happening in Sydney's CBD and major Sydney satellite CBD areas.

Looks quite good.

LOL at the curvey balcony.... When Harry was building the "Horizon", he must have accidently specified that he wanted "1000" curvey balconies made up, instead of "100". Now he's just using the remaining 900 of them up in anything he does! He's probably whacked a few on his own house!

That is unfortunate news Fabian, but I will even have more unfortunate news in relation to the Aquatic Centre tommorow. Watch this space :(

Anyway, 2 tid-bits of news.

Firstly, Seidler's Aquatic Centre was supposed to have started construction around July this year. Spoke with Seidler & Assoc. and they hope to have a tender signed up at the very latest by November/December. If successful, they hope to start to construction early next year, after the Xmas/New Year break. Possibly in February.

Secondly, the floors for Bullecourt are now above ground level.

Render for Bullecourt, facing Darling Harbour and the Sydney CBD.:

A (small) render of the Common. It was supposed to start construction late last year, however.

I will be calling the agents tommorow to find out the latest goss, if any.

Firstly, the developers P.C.C. hope to start construction of The Common either in November or December 2003. There are 42 units all-together in the development. The ground floor will be commercial i.e. a coffee lounge or to the likes of that.

Bullecourt, now 2 levels above ground. Australand's hired cranes busily at work:

About freakin' time The Ultimo Aquatic Centre was aproved!! Long overdue.

The hold ups of course were due to protests about cost cuttings and certain and necessary ammenities being excluded from the centre.

Unfrotunately the old facade from yesteryear that has been propped-up is apparently going :(

its quite good how the maximized the use of what seems like a small space to build an aquatic centre in

Muse
July 5th, 2006, 08:41 PM
The site according to seidler.net.au is 4,200 sq m (or 138 sq ft). Compare that to the neighbouring Exhibition Centre; Five single-level Exhibition Halls, each of 5,000 square metres (approx. 53,820 sq feet), providing a total area of 25,000 square metres (approx. 269,000 sq feet), and that's just internally!

However, it's extremely commanding from Harris Street with the huge curved trussed ribs.

That roof looks impressive as you go down Harris st.
As Culwulla mentioned this adds to an impressive list of aquatic facilities in the City of Sydney. I noticed that the City has plans for another aquatic centre down opposite South Sydney Hospital in Zetland. That would make 6 olympic sized pools for the city
and 8 if you include Nth Sydney pool and Sydney Uni Aquatic Centre.
Also Miliux Pointed out another lot of pools in the EDH plans.

Standing near it @ street level, it really makes itself known (obviously).

I noticed on the highway overpass side that certain sections of the base are being clad in the same or very similar (hrrm this is Seidler, I'll go "same") grey granite composite tiles as the base of Meriton Tower.

Thanks CULWULLA for today's pics in the threads.

That roof looks impressive as you go down Harris st.
Hmmm, perhaps if you stand and look at it end on with your head tilted to the side, with the top of your head pointing to the lower end of the roof, it begins to resemble its' namesake's current physical condition (viewed in profile)...:jk:

I hate corrugated steel roofing it always looks too cliche australian and bush-shed like. BTW who was the twat that named it after Ian Thorpe? They should give it a name that neams something like ultimo aquatic centre for instance even something stupid and quirky like flipper would have been better. Ian Thorpe is too much of a gronk fashionista to be taken seriously.

Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre opens with a splash

20 August 2007

Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP will officially open the City of Sydney's Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre on Sunday 26 August.

The Centre is a tribute to one of Australia's most successful athletes and is the last public building designed by the late Harry Seidler.

The state of the art centre has a wave-shaped roof and includes an Olympic-size heated pool, leisure pool, program pool, spa, sauna and steam room, café and fitness centre.

Ms Moore said the new aquatic centre will benefit local residents in the Pyrmont and Ultimo area which has doubled in population in the past decade.

"It is fitting that this cutting edge facility and architectural icon is dedicated to one of the Australia's greatest athletes," Ms Moore said.

Following City of Sydney environmental leadership guidelines, the Centre includes green initiatives including hydraulically operable roof vents for natural ventilation, rainwater harvesting for internal amenities such as toilets and sprinkler systems, and automated lighting to reduce energy consumption.

"I am honoured to have this incredible building named after me," Ian Thorpe said. "I hope the Centre will inspire young people to enjoy swimming and recognise the importance of exercise in a healthy lifestyle. Who knows, this may be where we find the next Olympic champion."

The Centre will be managed by the YMCA of Sydney. To ensure everyone can enjoy the facilities this Sunday, the YMCA reminds visitors that there may be long waits, and timed access to use the facilities to manage high demand on opening day.

The pool will open to the public at 10 am on Sunday 26 August.

Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre opened
August 26, 2007 03:27pm

THE last public work of one of Australia's great architects, the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre, has been opened in Sydney.

The aquatic centre in Ultimo would make its designer, Harry Seidler, proud, Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore said.

Penelope Seidler, Mr Seidler's widow, joined Ms Moore for the opening of the pool.

"This complex is the last great work of one of Australia's renowned architects," Ms Moore said.

"I think it does him proud, and I think it does this community proud," she said.

Thorpe was overseas today but said in a statement it was an honour to have the building named after him.

"Apologies I can't be there on this exciting day, but I look forward to visiting the pool on my return from the USA," the five-times Olympic champion said.

Facilities in the centre include an Olympic-sized pool, leisure pool, program pool, spa, sauna and steam room, cafe and fitness centre.

The wave shaped roof was to complement other buildings in the Darling Harbour area, John Curro from the building's architect Harry Seidler & Associates said.

"The entry was deliberately kept low to heighten the experience of the grand space," Mr Curro said.
"Harry predicted that when patrons went inside `they would go wow'," he said.

Ian Thorpe refuses to swim at opening of his own pool

IAN Thorpe made his first lap of the Sydney pool named in his honour yesterday - walking around the outside and refusing to get his big feet wet.

Appearing at the hi-tech Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre at Pyrmont, Thorpe mysteriously claimed he was unable to enter the water.

His reluctance to get wet during his inaugural tour of the pool puzzled young fans and the press.

"Not today," Thorpe replied when asked if he would test the waters.

When asked why not, Thorpe gave a cryptic reply: "Ummm, there's something preventing me from doing it. I can't, I've been told I'm not allowed to."

Dressed casually in fawn slacks, a white T-shirt and white leather loafers, the world champion's visit was notably subdued.

Thorpe nodded appreciatively as Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore walked him around the main 50m pool, leisure pool and spa at the $40 million complex, designed by the late Harry Seidler.

"I'm glad to have my name on the side of such a magnificent building in the middle of Sydney," he said.

Thorpe's management said a shoulder injury was the explanation for his inability to take the plunge, but would not elaborate.

"There's really nothing more to it than that," his spokesperson said.

Since his bombshell decision to quit professional swimming due to poor motivation last November, Thorpe has endured a difficult year.

Describing the circumstances of his departure from competitive swimming as "a tortured process", Thorpe said he still swam but did not miss "everything that goes with (competitive swimming)."

Repeating his belief his name had been forever tarnished following false claims of drug use, he said he would not rule out defamation proceedings in the fight to clear his name: "It's not over yet and never really will be."

Citing business interests in Asia as his main focus, Thorpe said he was happy with life.

"I'm glad in what I'm doing now and excited by it and happy with where my life is at the moment."

Thorpe has indicated he will take on a mentoring role for the Australian swimming team at the Beijing Olympics next year.

i saw it on tele. always looks good. i think he had an injured shoulder ,which is reason why he didnt take a dip. i know where hes coming from. i had a torn muscle in left shoulder last year and it was fucing painful. last thing you want to do is swim.

Unfortuante, but from what I'm read in the SMH he prefers swimming at his local pool. It seemed like he wasn't interested in the publicity associated with the pool being named after him.

I don't think many people care about the drug allegations. I seem to have forgotten it.

^thats all they were and he is now out to sue the idiot that brought on the allegations in first place.
yeah im not sure why they named pool after him? i mean he is undoublty our grestest swimmer and one of greatest in world but he comes from easthills and trains at Sutho. They should build a new pool out there and name it after him. The Ultimo pool needs a local named after it. maybe there are too many now .anyway its only a name.

I don't see the big deal. Andrew Murray Charlton was raised in Manly. Yet he has a pool in Woolloomooloo Bay named after him.

WOW! What phenomenal photos on this site! Was wondering if anyone has pictures of the construction phase of Bullecourt Place Apartments Ultimo? I am having an argument in the office: I say the site started construction January 2003 and my collegue reckons September 2002. Also, did they find archeological items on this particular site? Questions questions! Hope you guys can help.:bash:

Firstly, the developers P.C.C. hope to start construction of The Common either in November or December 2003. There are 42 units all-together in the development. The ground floor will be commercial i.e. a coffee lounge or to the likes of that.

Bullecourt, now 2 levels above ground. Australand's hired cranes busily at work:

Next, unfortunately the old proped up woolstore facade amidst the grassy knoll is to go for Seidler's Aquatic Centre. Say farewell to facadism . Hey there Sydney Tower:
