just got a scoop. Meriton are currently accessing a site in Surfers to host an apartment tower to rival the Q1 in height!!!
HarryT is now excited about the booming coast and realizes its potential!
cant wait for this one. Bob Nation is one of Meritons head architects atm.
The meriton contact asked me all of q1's heighths, roof, spire ect.. also Circles and souls heights.

I'd like to see them go tallest to roof in Australia, ie 300m

How about tallest free standing structure in the southern hemisphere surpassing Auckland Sky Tower.

it's pretty sad that Meriton can't do stuff like this in their home city - Sydney- which also happens to be Australias biggest and richest. I shudder to think of what a 280m white wavy concrete harry seidler thing would like like on the gold coast though..........

Groovy!!! GC is becoming more like some Asian super city every day. Move over Shanghai, Singapore and Shenzhen - we have a new rival.
Seriously I have been to GC several times recently over the last few weeks and from the west it looks amazing. It really does remind me of an Asian city now.

If only they would build something like Shun Hing Square, how awesome that would be.
I agree with some fo the comments levelled at the poor old Meritons problems in Sydney - it is tragic to think Sydney can't have some residential supertowers by meriton. If i was Meriton I'd push for them in another sydney location and snub the central CBD and SSC.

Only Singapore, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Tokyo.
I have also been to Georgetown, Denpasar and Johor Baru but they are only very small cities. I have been to Kuala Lumpur airport but that is 70km away from KL so I don't inlcude that one;)

word is HarryT is sick of Sydney and going elsewhere. he just has 50st meriton tower uc and 27st Zenith to start 2005 and thats it for Sydney's CBD.he knows the CBD is saturated in apartments atm. he has now a keen interest in GC. hes not stupid. look at Shores on Sundale site. he bought that in 2002 and now developoing the massive site with 4 towers.
not sure whats site he has purchased in Surfers, but he is keen to have biggest and best! 80storeys would be on agender i reckon. 322m is going to be hard to top.

thats a tough one? it could go to 90storeys-90x3m= 270m + arch feature-298m ;-)
whos knows. maybe he might be happy with 250m. but if i know harry, he has got eye on 300m mark.

well i imagine people like harry are so successful now that they probably approach property development like a little game they do keep themselves amused... and gc seems to have a 'yes' coucil so its obvious this is where all the excentric 'lets build big buildings' boys like harry are going to be drawn to.

What a legend! 80 storeys!! I thought he was only considering a 50 storey tower behind Circle on Cavill.
Has anyone bought the "bungee" site between ANA and Crown yet??
CULWULLA
November 18th, 2004, 12:02 PM
^ lend lease had there eyes on that block inconjunction with an os consortium but it has since fell through. so theres a block that has enough floor space to allow a 80storey scraper!! hmmm maybe harry has this one in mind? apparently theres about 4 of these blocks that are located between Cavill mall and Suncity outrigger.
MrTall
November 18th, 2004, 12:06 PM
^ I thought Lend Lease bought that one.
Anyway, good to hear harry is interested in heights, but i think he's got a lot on his Gold Goast plate at the moment so this won't come into fruition any time soon.

November 18th, 2004, 04:25 PM
Probably. The height of this one all depends on where it is. Cul, you might need to correct me, but I think the CASA height limit is RL306.5m. I think they should definately go for the Southern Hemisphere title.
LA53R

306.5 meters to roof is good enough :D
CULWULLA
November 23rd, 2004, 05:47 AM
CASA's height limit at surfers is RL304.5m or 1000ft!
most of surfers lies about 3-8m above sea level, so there is potential to go to 300m above grd!
About four weeks ago Mertion bought a nearly 9000 sqm site at 2677 Gold Coast Highway.
That's about half way between the centre of Surfers and Broadbeach. The site is a fair way back from the beach as well, about as far back as the Circle.
At nearly 9000sqm the site is bigger than Soul's and a bit smaller than Q1's but should be big enough, and far back enough to support anything they want to put it on. Of course it's a few blocks south of Q1 which may cause issues cos it's a little south of the supertalls prectinct, but only by a few streets.
its approx near 40storey former tallest on GC-the Aquarius! or new the Pinnacle!
http://www.goldcoastaustralia.com/Images/105931.jpg
http://www.surfersaquarius.com.au/images/map-local.jpg
so if a 240m+ goes up this end Q1 will be in centre while Soul and Circle will be at northern end.perfect

Cul, what is stopping Meriton from applying to casa to go above the height limit? Q1 went a bit above, did it not?

November 23rd, 2004, 09:30 AM
How about Meriton coming to Adelaide?? A 3000m2 site right smack bang in the middle of the CBD (Waymouth St, near the Citi Central Precinct) has just been bought my a "major Sydney based developer" according to an Ellis real estate agent I spoke to.
Could it be Meriton??? Cul?
CULWULLA
November 23rd, 2004, 01:05 PM
zztop- yep, of course meriton can apply for an extension above 305m. but it has to be a spire only. not sure how far they can go?
pikey-hmmm, i could ask meriton if they are extending to Adelaide.how cool would that be.ill let you know asap.

I still don't understand the 305m height limit!!! Why???? Why the hell are we so conservative here?? Haven't CASA heard of avionics and radar??? These help planes avoid buildings!! It's 15km away from Coolangatta airport!!!! Planes are WAY above Surfers by the time they get here!!! What the f**k is going on??? Are we insane?? If it's good for Dubai, Shanghai, Chicago, etc etc etc why isn't it good for us?????????

isnt it more dangerous to have a thinner metal pole to 322m than the building itself.
Im sure a pilot would see the building but the pole could be missed.

I think we should tell CASA to get fucked... its the 21st century planes can avoid buildings you know and yes a thin metal spire is more dangerous than a tower. Radar and flying by sight makes it easier to hit a spire than a building.
Macca-GC
November 27th, 2004, 11:20 AM
Oi, the planes don't really go over Surfers all that much. They usually go out along the general direction of the M1. The planes comming from the south don't even go north of Burleigh.
Malt
November 27th, 2004, 02:16 PM
Might not be the point. Planes NEVER fly anywhere near any buildings in Brisbane that ive seen, yet theres a limit.

I don't think it should matter either way, as planes shouldn't be flying low around such a built up area with tall buidlings, surfers is quite a distance from the airport.

Meh, sorry to rain on the party, but meriton don't have the greatest reputation on the GC. They built alot of the 70's and 80's shit, including some monstrous eyesores in mainbeach. The council is skeptical of them, as am I. The thought of them planning an iconic supertower just makes me nervous.

Merion are very lucky since 2000 with most designs assisted by one- Bob Nation! If he has anything to do with project ,think of Eureka cross World Tower. he was partners with nonda Kastalidis with Eureka and World Tower.
BUT ive also found out last week that the block meriton purchased isnt zoned supertall. but has a 40storey max height capped on it as with most of broadbeach. They are actually planning twin 40 storeys towers for the site. oh well. they still should be worth it!

Maybe its for the best, Q1 should remain the iconic supertall of the GC. I think it would make the skyline look weird if there was something taller than Q1, because it has such a dominating look about it.
Twin 40 storey towers is not a bad proposal for that part of surfers, they will look big around there.

Um hello dont you think that something taller might also have a dominating look about it? The tallest buildings rarely remain the tallest for that long now, esp in cities with exponential growth. Q1 won't retain its title indefinitely.

I was just talking about the design, I think the skyline would look weird if there was something taller than Q1. We don't want our city to look like bloody pudong. Anyway I believe the height limit for surfers is now 322.5m, nothing will be higher than Q1's spire.

Unless CASA changes its height restrictions from RL304.5m it will.
