space_invader March 17th, 2005, 02:53 PM This was one of my faves when i visited Istanbul; it seemed so 'urban' and was integrated into the city very well. If my memory is correct, the old galata bridge terminated near this mosque and the spice market was nearby.
KMFDM March 17th, 2005, 03:02 PM Yes, this mosque is right next to "Mısır Çarşısı," or "Egyptian Bazaar" which is a spice market. The biggest drawback of the area for years was the high number of street sellers - so high, in fact, that the place looked like a stereotypical middle eastern market with all the chaos, dirt and noise. Nowadays, it's finally been cleaned up from street sellers and new sidewalks have been installed. It's another corner of Istanbul that's been "Europeanized." Hopefully the renovation of the city will continue. Istanbul's fast becoming a modern metropolis worthy of its historical importance.
Kuvvaci March 17th, 2005, 03:06 PM I give you a good news, buildings around this mosque are under renovation now everywhere at this area have constructions. They are making wonderful works. space invader, if you come here, I have so much to show you... Historical face of the city is coming back...
space_invader March 17th, 2005, 05:27 PM kuvvaci - i would very much appreciate an architectural guide when i visit Istanbul :)
To be honest i am surprised that the whole world is not getting excited about Istanbul's new ascent to the top of the global pile.
Funnily enough, it is writers who often get this kind of thing right. Sci-fi writers expecially. In the seminal 'cyberpunk' novel, Neuromancer, by Wiliam Gibson, much of the action takes place in Istanbul - Gibson rightly identified the city as a massive economic conurbation for the 21st century.
Today, Istanbul's growing pull is reflected in the number of 'city break' articles about the city appearing in the Weekend newspapers. Soon, however, the articles will start to appear in the business pages.

Actually UIC Architecture Congress will affect everything. It's here next summer and all giant archicets will come to Istanbul. As I heard our mayor already talked to Frank O. Gehry for works. A few weeks ago Zaha Hadid was here, and our mayor and Hadid made some plans for next summer...
Kuvvaci March 17th, 2005, 06:32 PM Also Istanbul is decleared as the most important investment city at the MIPIM fair in Cannes last week and investors is coming here for new projects next month
space_invader March 17th, 2005, 07:17 PM See in the UK we never get this news!

space_invader March 18th, 2005, 11:37 AM yes - it would be great - kuvavci , I'm interested in what you said about much of 'old istanbul' coming back to prominence. Is there a government policy to restore and refurbish certain types of historical architecture?
