Salem division has a length of 842-km.


The break-up of lines in the Salem division: Udhagamandalam - Coimbatore North Junction (79 km); Coimbatore North - Erode - Salem - Jolarpet (277 km); Irugur - Podanur - Coimbatore Junction (19 km); Salem - Karur (work in progress, 85 km); Karur - Dindigul (74 km); Salem - Vridhachalam (135 km); Salem - Mettur Dam (37 km); and Erode - Tiruchirapalli (137 km).


There are demands to add the Hosur-Dharmapuri-Omalur with a length of 150km to the Salem Division in addition to the Pollachi - Kinathukkadavu line with a length of 25km.

Salem division in the Southern Railway which was carved out of the existing Palakkad and Tiruchchirapalli divisions in the year 2007 and this was formally inaugurated on 1 November 2007 by the Tamil Nadu Chief MinisterM. Karunanidhiand Former Indian Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav..And its headquaters ralway station is Salem Junction.Salem Junction is a six railway routes merging junction as towards Erode,Jolarpet,Mettur,Attur,Hosur,karur(Finishing stage now), so it plays an important transit point in south India. Many Trains are passing through Salem Junction and Direct Trains are also available.Apart from these six railway routes, there is a freight line from Salem to Steel plant.Trains from Chennai to Coimbatore/Kerala (East-West) and trains from Bangalore to Southern districts [North-South] pass through the city, making it an important transit hub.

சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டத்தை, கேரளாவுடன் இணைப்பதை தவிர்க்கக்கோரி, ஈரோடு மாவட்ட அனைத்து தொழில், வணிகச் சங்கங்களின் கூட்டமைப்பு தலைவர் சிவநேசன், தென்னக ரயில்வே தலைமை பொது மேலாளருக்கு கடிதம் அனுப்பி உள்ளார்.



சென்னை மண்டலத்தின் கீழ்...: அவர் அனுப்பியுள்ள மனு: பல்வேறு போராட்டங்களுக்குப் பின், மத்திய அரசு, நான்காண்டுக்கு முன், சேலம் கோட்டத்தை உருவாக்கியது. பாலக்காடு ரயில்வே கோட்டத்தில் இருந்து பிரித்து, தமிழகத்தின் ரயில்வே சேவையை அதிகரிக்க, சேலம் கோட்டம் உருவாக்கப்பட்டது. சென்னை, மதுரை, திருச்சி, சேலம் ஆகிய கோட்டங்களை இணைத்து, சென்னை மண்டலம் சிறப்பாக செயல்படுகிறது. சேலம் கோட்டத்தில் எவ்வித அடிப்படை வசதியும் செய்யாமல், இன்னும் பாலக்காட்டில் இருப்பது போன்றே காணப்படுகிறது.

RPF opens passenger assistance booth at Salem Railway Junction

The spurt in anti-social activities inside the busy Salem Railway Junction including a recent attempt to molest a girl inside the coach of a train by a couple of vendors has forced the Railway Protection Force (RPF) to open a passenger assistance booth at the entrance of Junction, as a part of its security strengthening exercise, here on Tuesday.

The booth, a press release from Railways says, has been set up to check the movement of unauthorised persons, anti-social elements, urchins and beggars on the premises of the junction through which nearly 75 upcountry and other important trains pass through daily.

It, according to Assistant Security Commissioner, RPF, Salem Railway Division, V. Anandaraj, would function round the clock on all seven days in a week so that the passengers who are in need of any assistance can approach the RPF personnel at the booth.

Senior Railway sources told The Hindu that the establishment of RPF booth was the result of a string of strong measures taken by the Divisional Railway Manager Sujatha Jayaraj, who was worried over the recent occurrence of some unpleasant activities on the junction premises.

Local media also ran reports claiming that the junction was slowly slipping into the clutches of anti-socials.

An unholy nexus forged between a few railway staff and ‘outsiders’ had led to the happening of many illegal activities inside the Junction.

A source claimed that lack of adequate policing on its platforms had led to the proliferation of anti-socials. Even the DMK MP K P Ramalingam recently submitted a petition to DRM saying that chain snatchings in junction were on the rise. The intimidation of passengers by unlicensed vendors and beggars who had formed cartels on board also was rampant.

“The Junction autorickshaw stand is another main source from where anti-social activities are often reported. Many unregistered autos under the banner of some caste organisations have started plying autos from junction stand.

These drivers intimidate passengers and even manhandle them.

Mostly girls and boys from other states who come here o study fall prey to such vandalism,” said a registered auto driver.

“Pre-paid auto booth is the need of hour,” felt a passenger.

M. Chandrasekaran, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Sooramangalam, Salem, under whose jurisdiction the Junction falls, told The Hindu that local police had taken all efforts to eliminate anti-socials in its neighbourhood. RPF and Railway Police had to take care of security in Junction and Yard. “We are closely monitoring the autorickshaw stand,” he said.

“The overall earnings of Salem Railway Division till December 2012 is Rs. 370 crore, which is 4 per cent higher than that of last year’s while the working expenditure has come down by 3 per cent,” said Sujatha Jayaraj, Divisional Railway Manager, Salem Railway Division.

Unfurling the national flag and accepting Guard of Honour from the personnel of Railway Protection Force (RPF) here on Saturday, the DRM further added that a sum of Rs. 69 crore had been spent under the plan head expenditure. “It is a very positive growth during the current year, too, when compared to last year,” she said.

On the operating front, the punctuality of trains had also registered a healthy increase standing at 91.63 per cent as against 89 per cent last year and the number of accidents had come down considerably, she pointed out. The Salem Division was giving utmost importance to passenger amenities by spending about Rs. 10 crore to Rs. 12 crore every year providing battery operated cars, medical defibrillators, renovated retiring rooms, Jansadharan Ticket Booking Sevaks (Private Unreserved Ticket Vendors) and postal Passenger Ticket Reservation systems.

She also said that medical assistance booths will be provided at Salem Junction to assist the passengers, shortly. She said that the works were underway for Salem-Karur new BG link, Coimbatore-Mettupalayam line electrification and doubling of Salem Mettur Dam line. She also congratulated RPF for its swift action against ant-socials on Junction premises.

Dog show by RPF staff and cultural programmes by children from railway schools and staff of Salem Division were organised to mark the Republic Day celebrations.

There should be regular meetings with district officials and revenue officials concerned to solve problems related to land acquisition for railway over bridges and projects of railways, said Salem Divisional Railway Manager Sujatha Jayaraj here on Wednesday.

She was speaking at a meeting convened by the division for MPs here on Wednesday. Though 17 MPs were invited for the meeting, only four turned up.

Ms. Sujatha sought the support from MPs for more funds so that ongoing projects could be expedited and new works could be taken up.

New train

S. Semmalai, MP, said that though the division was into its seventh year, no new train had originated from the junction.

He said that five pairs of trains should be introduced to connect with State capitals. He wanted more ticket counters at the Salem Railway Junction, separate counters for giving platform tickets, an increase in the seating capacity at the passenger reservation counters, installation of escalators and lifts, setting up a medical assistance both, and CCTVs at the platforms. He wanted day trains between Salem and Chennai and renovation of entrance at the fifth platform.

P.R. Natarajan, MP, narrated the difficulties faced by the people because of absence of service road to Irugur and Somanur railway stations and wanted the railways to immediately lay roads.

He stressed the need for renovating stations on the Mettupalayam – Coimbatore sector under the Public – Private Partnership and called for expediting the electrification of the sector besides improving other stations.

A. Ganesamoorthy and T.M. Selvaganapathy, MPs, said basic amenities at Erode Railway Junction should be improved and the Erode – Palani railway line work should be taken up.

Additional Divisional Railway Manager V. Thavamani Pandi and other railway officials participated. Later, Mr. Natarajan told The Hindu in Coimbatore that he had asked the railway officials to introduce night trains to Bangalore, and Nagercoil and a day train to Chennai.

Rameswaram

He said the demand for operating a special train on the Coimbatore – Rameswaram sector via Erode, Karur, and Dindigul till the gauge conversion of the Podanur – Pollachi – Udumalpet – Palani section was completed, would be considered.

Mr. Natarajan said that he had requested for operating a night train from Coimbatore to Mayiladuthurai and extending the Thiruvananthapuram – Palakkad Amrita Express up to Coimbatore. He had sought an additional train to Thoothukudi as well. The Jodhpur-Bangalore train should be extended to Coimbatore, he said.

Cargo train

He said Ms. Sujatha Jayaraj would meet the representatives of chamber of commerce and industry in Coimbatore to discuss the feasibility of introducing a cargo train.

Erode, Tirupur railway junctions to get facelift

SALEM, February 9, 2013

Erode and Tirupur railway junctions would be given facelift at a cost of Rs. 3 crore to Rs. 4 crore each, Salem Railway Division Manager Sujatha Jayaraj said here on Friday.

Addressing reporters, Ms. Sujatha said that frontage renovation work, extension of circulating area, provision for secondary entrance to the station, creating waiting hall and food plazas would be carried out at both the junctions. “Platforms at Tirupur junctions were crowded with parcels and hence parcel rooms would be constructed at the end of the platforms,” she added. Asked about the expectations for the division in the Railway Budget, she said that a proposal for a day time train between Salem and Chennai and trains from Coimbatore were among the recommendations submitted.

She said that the passenger earnings last year was Rs. 510 crore and Rs. 520 crore had been fixed as target for this year of which Rs. 435 crore had been achieved so far. “Cement loading has dropped drastically leading to drop in freight earnings. Passenger earnings in January 2013 was Rs. 31 crore compared to Rs. 8 crore in freight earnings”, she added. To prevent movement of anti-social elements in Salem, Erode and Coimbatore junctions, RPF personnel along with State police were carrying out inspections, she added.

Ms. Sujatha said that an Emergency Medical Care Centre would start functioning at the Salem Railway Junction soon where passengers and railway staff could get free treatment. She also outlined various development works undertaken at the junction after bifurcated from Palakkad Division that includes modernised front elevation, expansion of circulating area and installation of GPS-based train tracking systems.

In a bid to sensitise the passengers on their role to keep the station premises clean, Salem Railway Division launched a cleanliness awareness campaign at Salem Railway Junction here on Tuesday.

Flagged off by Division Railway Manager Sujatha Jayaraj in the presence of City Municipal Corporation Commissioner M. Ashokan, students took out a rally and distributed pamphlets to passengers about the importance of keeping the premises clean for the benefit of all. The pamphlets cautioned passengers that persons indulging in littering the premises, cooking, bathing, spitting, urinating, defecating, washing utensils or clothes would be liable for punishment with a penalty of not more than Rs. 500 as per the new rule - Indian Railways (Penalties for activities affecting cleanliness on railway premises) Rules, 2012.

Officials also said that pasting of posters or writing or drawing in compartment or in the premises would also attract penalty. Railway officials said that the message would be announced through public addressing system.

Demand for Bangalore – Nagercoil daily train

Due to non-availability of night time train service between Bangalore and Nagercoil, over 5,000 passengers were forced to travel by bus everyday.

Hence the railways should introduce a night train connecting these two cities through Hosur, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul, Virudhunagar and Madurai, Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli Districts Residents Association of Bangalore has demanded.

In a petition to all MPs from the State, T.S. Jegan, president of the association said that with the growth of Information Technology sector, more youngsters were working in Bengaluru and they frequently travel between these places.

They wanted the new train to start from Bangalore at 5 p.m. and reach Nagercoil by 8 a.m. and another train could start at Nagercoil at 5 a.m. and reach Bangalore by 8 a.m.

Station Consultative Committee meeting held on Wednesday

Appointing private unreserved ticket vending agents, linking of platform number five with other platforms at the junction and installing closed circuit television cameras in the junction were the key points discussed during the first Station Consultative Committee (SCC) meeting held here on Wednesday.

Chaired by Additional Divisional Railway Manager V. Thavamani Pandi, members of the committee, including members from Chamber of Commerce, Leigh Bazar Merchant Association, educational institutions and the general public discussed the amenities required at the station premises and the measures for improving them.

Long queues

With the public being put to hardship by waiting for getting unreserved tickets in long queues, the members stressed the starting of Jansadharan Ticket Booking Sevaks (JTBS) near the station premises.

They also wanted the stoppage of Salem – Chennai Egmore Express at Salem Town Railway Station, opening of additional reservation counters, improving the circulating areas and opening of second entrance at the other side of the station for the convenience of the passengers and others.

Railway officials outlined the various works currently carried out at the station including, installation of foot-over-bridge, extension of subway from platform 4 to 5, and extending the circulating area, apart from enhancing passenger amenities.

Officials at the meeting also explained about the measures undertaken to check touts and unauthorised vendors.

Salem – Karur broad gauge sector to be inspected

The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) is expected to inspect the Salem – Namakkal – Karur new broad gauge tracks between February 25 and 27 for commencing the passenger service.

Sources in the railways said that all major works have been completed in the sector and the Chief Administrative Officer of the Southern Railway would request for inspection to be carried out by CRS.

Technical team

As per Chapter III of the Railways Act, 1989, the CRS, accompanied by a technical team, would inspect tracks, passenger amenities at stations, ticket counters and other facilities to ensure safety for passengers and railway personnel operating in the sector.

Queries, if any raised by the CRS, would be rectified and after obtaining the certificate, the division would request the railway board for commencing the passenger service.

“Introduction of trains, timings, operational pattern and others would be discussed later,” sources said.

Sources said to begin with, Trichy - Karur passenger could be extended up to Salem as after departing from Tiruchi at 9.30 a.m. and arriving at Karur by 11.10 a.m., the train thereafter lies idle.

“Depending upon the availability of coaches, new trains could be introduced,” the source added.

Operations

Commercial operation began in the sector last November as a train with 58 wagons proceeding from Andhra Pradesh to Tirunelveli passed through the sector.

The project initially started in 1997, was delayed by several factors with project cost revised from Rs. 225 crore to Rs. 630 crore.

Upon commencing of passenger traffic, trains instead of reaching Erode and taking the tracks to Karur, can pass directly, thus reducing a distance of about 30 km.

As per Chapter III of the Railways Act, 1989, the CRS, accompanied by a technical team, would inspect tracks, passenger amenities at stations, ticket counters and other facilities to ensure safety for passengers and railway personnel operating in the sector.

Queries, if any raised by the CRS, would be rectified and after obtaining the certificate, the division would request the railway board for commencing the passenger service.

“Introduction of trains, timings, operational pattern and others would be discussed later,” sources said.

Sources said to begin with, Trichy - Karur passenger could be extended up to Salem as after departing from Tiruchi at 9.30 a.m. and arriving at Karur by 11.10 a.m., the train thereafter lies idle.

“Depending upon the availability of coaches, new trains could be introduced,” the source added.

Operations

Commercial operation began in the sector last November as a train with 58 wagons proceeding from Andhra Pradesh to Tirunelveli passed through the sector.

The project initially started in 1997, was delayed by several factors with project cost revised from Rs. 225 crore to Rs. 630 crore.

Upon commencing of passenger traffic, trains instead of reaching Erode and taking the tracks to Karur, can pass directly, thus reducing a distance of about 30 km.

Commuters and rail-users have decried the inordinate delay in operating passenger services in the newly-laid broad gauge line between Karur and Salem.

They claim that with the Salem Railway Divisional authorities not completing the formalities for the final inspection by the Commissioner of Rail Safety (CRS) there was remote possibility for passenger trains to be operated before April.

The long drawn project was somehow completed a couple of months back and the authorities allowed goods trains to pass through the stretch. The new route would, besides providing rail connectivity for the first time to Namakkal district, reduce the travel time between Karur and Salem by 35 km and save an hour.

However there has been no word yet on the mandatory inspection by the CRS and we are afraid whether the Salem Divisional Railway authorities have put in the request for inspection in the first place , alleges Karur District Train Travellers’ Welfare Association president S.Annadurai.

Does that mean the Railway authorities have not yet completed all work pertaining to regular operation of passenger trains and if so what and who was reason for the inordinate delay in requesting the CRS inspection? he asks.

The query assumes importance as traders and public of the beneficiary districts have been waiting impatiently for the trains to be operated on the new track for pretty long a time.

The Salem Divisional Railway authorities have been making noises routinely and frequently about operation of trains in the section but nothing have materialised so far . Now we hear that the formal request for CRS inspection has not gone out so far and the mandatory inspection could no happen any sooner than April to allow for passenger services, :ohno: rues Mr.Annadurai.

In a couple of days, the Railway Budget would be presented and the Minister is expected to grandiosely announce the passenger train services in the sector.

Then we believe the officials would move things as if they were just waiting for the Minister’s green signal to come about.

It is good if the authorities keep the interests of the train travellers in mind while clearing any hindrance in the operation of passenger trains, Mr.Annadurai says.

Salem-Karur: trial run today

SALEM, February 21, 2013

As a prelude to the inspection expected to be carried out by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) on the Salem – Namakkal – Karur new broad gauge tracks between February 25 and 27, the Construction Organisation of the Southern Railway would conduct a trial run on Thursday with speed exceeding 110 kmph.

Railway officials said that the strength of the 85-km-track would be studied by running a locomotive engine with three coaches at a speed between 110 kmph and 130 kmph.

Commercial operations began in the sector last November.

Passenger train service was expected to commence from March after the inspection, officials said.

Train covered 81KM in 45min.. avg speed of 108KMPH.

Train was blasting Rasipuram station..

Quality of construction of this line looks to be very good. On par with MV-TVR GC!

சேலம் – கரூர் இடையே ரயில் சோதனை ஓட்டம்

சேலம் - கரூர் இடையிலான புதிய அகல ரயில் பாதையில், பயணிகள் ரயில் சோதனை ஓட்டம் இன்று நடைபெற்றது. 110 கிலோ மீட்டர் வேகத்தில் இந்த ரயில் இயக்கப்பட்டது.

இரண்டு பெட்டிகள் இணைக்கப்பட்ட பயணிகள் ரயில் தெற்கு ரயில்வே தலைமை பொறியாளர்களுடன் இன்று காலை சேலம் சந்திப்பு ரயில் நிலையத்தில் இருந்து புறப்பட்டது. அந்த ரயில், ராசிபுரம், நாமக்கல் வழியாக 45 நிமிடங்களில் கரூர் சென்றடைந்தது.

இந்த சோதனை ஓட்டம் வெற்றி பெற்றதைத் தொடர்ந்து, ரயில்வே பாதுகாப்பு ஆணைய அதிகாரிகள் வரும் 25-ந் தேதி முதல் 3 நாட்கள் சோதனை ஓட்டம் நடத்தவுள்ளனர். இந்த சோதனை ஓட்டமும் வெற்றிகரமாக அமைந்தால், சேலம் - கரூர் இடையே அடுத்த மாத இறுதிக்குள் பயணிகள் ரயில் போக்குவரத்து தொடங்கப்படும் என எதிர்ப்பார்க்கப்படுகிறது.

85 கிலோ மீட்டர் தூரத்திற்கான இந்த அகல ரயில் பாதை திட்டத்தின் பணிகள் கடந்த ஆண்டு நிறைவு பெற்றது. பல்வேறு கட்ட சோதனை ஓட்டங்களுக்கு பிறகு கடந்த நவம்பர் முதல் இந்த அகல பாதையில் சரக்கு ரயில் போக்குவரத்து நடைபெற்று வருகிறது.

சேலத்தில் இருந்து கரூருக்கு அகல ரெயில்பாதை அமைக்கும் பணி கடந்த 1996- 1997-ம் ஆண்டு தொடங்கப்பட்டது. சுமார் ரூ.690கோடி மதிப்பில் இந்த திட்டம் தொடங்கப்பட்டது. இதன் மூலம் சேலம்- நாமக்கல் , கரூர் மக்களின் நீண்ட நாள் கனவு நிறைவேறியது. அகல ரெயில்பாதை அமைக்க நிலம் கையகப்படுத்தப்பட்டு பின்னர் பணிகள் தொடங்கியது. இப்போது அனைத்து பணிகளும் செய்து முடிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இந்த திட்டத்திற்காக சேலத்தில் இருந்து கரூருக்கு 85 கிலோ மீட்டர் தூரத்திற்கு ரெயில் பாதை அமைக்கப்பட்டது. சில காரணங்களால் ரெயில் பாதை அமைக்கும் பணி சற்று தாமதமானது. பின்னர் பணிகள் வேகமாக நடந்தது. பிறகு அனைத்து பணிகளும் முடிக்கப்பட்டது. இதை தொடர்ந்து சேலம் ஜங்சனில் இருந்து கரூருக்கு ராசிபுரம், நாமக்கல் வழியே சரக்கு ரெயில் ஒன்று வெள்ளோட்டம் விடப்பட்டு ரெயில்பாதை சரியாக உள்ளதா? என ரெயில்வே துறை உயர் அதிகாரிகள் பார்த்தனர். இதன் பின்னர் மூன்று முறை சரக்கு ரெயில்கள் இந்த வழியே விடப்பட்டு வெள்ளோட்டம் பார்க்கப்பட்டது.

இந்த நிலையில் சேலம் - கரூர் அகல ரெயில் பாதையில் வருகிற மார்ச் மாதம் முதல் பயணிகள் ரெயில் இயக்கப்படும் என சேலம் ரெயில்வே கோட்ட மேலாளர் சுஜாதா தெரிவித்து இருந்தார். இதற்கான அனைத்து பணிகளிலும் ரெயில்வே அதிகாரிகள் ஈடுபட்டு வந்தனர்.

இந்த நிலையில் டெல்லி ரெயில்வேயின் தலைமை பாதுகாப்பு ஆணையாளர் சேலம் வந்து சேலம்- கரூர் அகல ரெயில்பாதையில் பயணிகள் ரெயில் இயக்க முடியுமா என நேரில் ஆய்வு செய்ய உள்ளார். இவரும், மற்ற அதிகாரிகளும் வருகிற 25-ம் தேதி சேலம் வந்து இந்த பணிகளை பார்வையிட உள்ளனர். இவர்கள் வருகையை அடுத்து இன்று காலை சேலம் ஜங்சனில் இருந்து கரூருக்கு 110 கிலோ மீட்டர் வேகத்தில் ரெயில் ஒன்று இயக்கி சோதனை செய்து பார்க்கப்பட்டது.

இதை தெற்கு ரெயில்வே தலைமை பொறியாளர் கண்டேல்வால் ஆய்வு செய்தார். அவரும், தலைமை துணை என்ஜினீயர் நந்தகுமார் மற்றும் சேலம் ஜங்சன் ரெயில் நிலைய மேலாளர் ரவீந்திரநாதன் மற்றும் அதிகாரிகள் இந்த ரெயிலில் சென்று பார்வையிட்டனர். இந்த ரெயிலில் ஒரு என்ஜின், ஒரு பயணிகள் பெட்டி, ஒரு அதிகாரிகள் பெட்டி என இரண்டு பெட்டிகள் இருந்தது. இதில் ரெயில்வே ஊழியர்கள், அதிகாரிகள் பயணம் செய்து ரெயில்பாதையை பார்வையிட்டு ஆய்வு செய்தனர். 80 கிலோ மீட்டர் வேகத்தில் சென்ற இந்த ரெயில் 110 கிலோ மீட்டர் வேகம் வரை சென்று சோதனை செய்து பார்க்கப்பட்டது. இதுகுறித்து தெற்கு ரெயில்வே தலைமை பொறியாளர் கண்டேல்வால் கூறியதாவது:-

நிலம் கையகப்படுத்த மட்டும் ரூ.200கோடி செலவாகி உள்ளது. சேலம் - கரூர் அகல ரெயில்பாதையில் எப்போது இருந்து பயணிகள் ரெயில் விடுப்படும் என விரைவில் அறிவிப்பு வரும்.

ரெயில்வே போலீசாரும், போர்ட்டர்களும் திரளாக வந்து வேடிக்கை பார்த்தனர். சேலத்தில் இருந்து கரூர் சென்ற இந்த ரெயிலை வழி நெடுக பொதுமக்கள் பலரும் நின்று வேடிக்கை பார்த்தனர்.

The newly laid 85 kilometre Salem-Karur broad gauge railway line was tested for speed traffic on Thursday.

A team of senior officials from the Railways, led by its Chief Engineer, Southern Railway, Chennai, A. K. Kandelwal and Deputy Construction Engineer, Construction Section, Salem Railway Division, R. Nandakumar, carried out the inspection on the track with a composition of three units including a locomotive and two coaches.

“The track testing including ballast formation, signals etc were carried out at a speed between 110 kilometres and 130 kilometres. We reached Namakkal station in 35 minutes and Karur in just an hour,” said an official.

Successful

Prior to that, a trolley inspection on the track was also carried out. The entire operation, according to officials, was successful. The train was operated at the speed of 60 kilometre last month

The high speed trial is a prelude to the detailed inspection to be carried out by Chief Safety Commissioner from February 25 to 27.

“After his inspection and certification, passenger traffic will be inaugurated on the sector,” said a senior official in Salem Railway Division.

The much-delayed project, costing around Rs 690 crore, began in 1997-98. It was delayed due to bottlenecks in land alienation in Salem and Namakkal districts.

“The Railways had to spend nearly Rs 200 crore for lands alone,” said the official, adding. Freight traffic is on in the track.

Staff Reporter adds from Namakkal: The trial of the Salem-Karur broad gauge rail route through Namakkal, on Thursday, has increased people’s hope of getting its first passenger and express rail service to this district soon”, said R. Kumarasamy of Namakkal.

Sweets distributed

He was among the many who gathered on either side of the track to see the train speed past. Congress cadre distributed sweets to people who came to the station to see the train.

Three months ago, goods train service was launched on this route and people were optimistic that passenger trains service will be launched in a few days.

The train reached Namakkal around 9.55 a.m. and stopped there for two minutes before it headed to Karur.

Hundreds thronged the railway over bridges on the Senthamangalam Road, Thuraiyur Road and Tiruchi Road through which the train entered and left Namakkal Town.

There was equal enthusiasm among people living in the rural localities as well.

It cuts running time, no need for engine turnaround at Erode
The Karur-Namakkal-Salem new broad gauge line, which is expected to be opened to passenger train traffic soon, is likely to facilitate the introduction of a train service between Bangalore and Nagercoil, a long-pending demand from Kanyakumari district.

The new line cuts running time between Karur and Salem, and saves 20 minutes at Erode junction for engine turnaround. “Overall, we can save around one hour of running time if we use the new line,” a senior official said. The non-stop Madurai-Chennai Duronto Express could also be diverted to the Karur-Salem line instead of the present Karur-Erode-Salem route to save time and fuel, he added.

The Tuticorin-Mysore Express is the only train connecting Bangalore to the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. The residents association of Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli districts in Bangalore had been making representations to the Railway Ministry for many years to operate an overnight daily train service between Bangalore and Nagercoil. Its president T.S. Jegan said that the weekly train running between Bangalore and Nagercoil did not meet the requirement of the southern districts.

The timing of the train did not suit office-goers and students as it left Nagercoil at 1.20 p.m. on Saturdays. In reached Nagercoil at 2 p.m on the return .

Commuters from the southern districts were employed in the Information Technology industry and running businesses in Bangalore, Hosur and Dharmapuri, he added. The association claimed that at least 3,000 people used buses on this route owing to non-availability of seats on trains.

The daily Kanyakumari-Bangalore Express did not benefit passengers in Tamil Nadu as it took a circuitous route travelling 944 km (via Kerala) instead of 723 km via Madurai and Salem. The travelling time was 21 hours as against 14 hours by other trains, he added.

Railway minister may connect Kovai with Rameswaram, Mannargudi

COIMBATORE: Union railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal is likely to show the green signal to a long-pending demand of the city for a direct train to the temple town Mannargudi via Trichy and Thanjavur.

Railway standing committee chairman T R Balu has made a recommendation to this effect which has been favourably considered by the minister, sources said. The Coimbatore-Rameswaram Express, which is presently operated as a summer special, is also likely to be regularized. Other expectations from the budget, which will be presented in Parliament on Tuesday, include conversion of Coimbatore-Tirupathi Express from a thrice-a-week train to a daily express and an additional night train to Chennai. Railway officials also expect a train from Salem to Bangalore or Chennai.

A few trains that presently skip Coimbatore junction and run via Irugur-Podanur route including Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Express, Mangalore-Chennai Express, Puducherry-Goa Express and Mumbai CST-Nagercoil Express are likely to be rerouted to pass through Coimbatore junction.

Bansal's budget is likely to announce the date of commencement of the Palakkad-Erode Memu service announced last year. A fully air-conditioned Yeshwantpur-Kochuveli (near Thiruvananthapuram) train via Coimbatore Junction, which also figured in the last budget, would be on track soon, officials promise.

Officials have assured that the budget will set aside necessary funds to complete gauge conversion work between Pollachi and Palakkad. A new passenger train is expected to run between Pollachi and Palani once the gauge conversion is completed by June

Report to be submitted to Railway Board within three weeks

The Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle, Bangalore, S.K. Mittal said that a detailed report on the safety aspects of the newly laid 85-km-long Salem — Karur broad gauge rail track will be submitted to the Railway Board within two to three weeks. “Launch of passenger service trains on this route will be decided based on the report”, he said.

He was addressing newsmen here on Monday evening after inspecting the track laying works that were carried out on the 35 km Karur to Namakkal stretch.

“The works that were inspected include the safety aspects in rail tracks, railway over bridges, level crossings, signals, stations and other infrastructure. I have given recommendation to officials to carry out a few minor corrections. The trolley inspection from Namakkal to Salem will be conducted on Tuesday, following which the three-day testing will conclude with a trial run at a speed of about 110 to 120 km per hour”, Mr. Mittal said.

Manpower

Mr. Mittal said that it was necessary to appoint sufficient manpower in all the stations and for track maintenance before operating passenger train services on this route.

‘Railway Budget disappointing’

Representatives of industry, trade and the common public here expressed disappointment over the Railway Budget, describing it an ‘unjust’ budget for the Salem Railway Division.

The demand of Salem people to have trains originating from the junction and a daytime train to Chennai did not find a place in the budget. “It is almost six years since the Salem Division has been bifurcated from Palakkad Railway Division, but a train originating from the junction is still a dream,” a passenger said.

The traders expressed dissatisfaction over the increase in freight charges for moving diesel and cooking fuels.

Jayaseelan, general secretary of the Salem City Chamber of Commerce, said that though 14 new trains were announced for the State, it was disappointing that the Rs. 600-crore revenue earning division was given a raw deal. He further said traders from Salem, Erode, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri would be roped in to protest against the injustice meted out to the division.

Erode

The trade and business community in the district expressed displeasure over the increase in the freight charges for transporting major commodities including liquefied petroleum gas, diesel, cement, steel and fertilizer in the Railway Budget.

“Industries are the major consumers of petroleum products, cement and steel. The increase in the freight charges for these goods will be ultimately passed over to the industries. This will also lead to increase in the prices of various other goods as well,” said N. Sivanesan, president of Federation of All Trade and Industry Associations of Erode District.

“We have been demanding an exclusive freight corridor from Coimbatore to Chennai and Coimbatore to Bangalore.

The industries in Erode are also asking the Railway Ministry to establish a link between Perundurai railway station and the Sipcot complex. These demands did not find a mention in the budget,” Mr. Sivanesan said.

Consumer activist R. Balasubramanian said that the Palani-Chamrajnagar railway line scheme, which was one of the long-pending demands, was not announced in the budget.

Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri

There was no mention about the much-awaited Jolarpet-Hosur new rail route via Krishnagiri, said E.N. Mani, secretary, Krishnagiri Rail, Bus Passengers’ Association. A fresh survey on the project was conducted during the last fiscal and the report was sent to the Planning Commission for approval. “When we met the Minister for State for Railways K.H. Muniappa recently in Bangalore, he said that the project was approved by the Planning Commission,” Mr. Mani said.

D. Chandrasekar, district secretary, TNEB Pensioners’ Association, who had spearheaded a signature campaign in support of the Jolarpet-Hosur rail link, also expressed dissatisfaction over the budget.

Namakkal

The poultry industry is not happy with the increase in freight charges in the goods train by five per cent. For the industry, train is the only alternative low cost means to transport raw materials for production of feed for more than four crore hens and one crore chicks in this region.

However, the National Egg Coordination Committee’s Namakkal Zone chairman P. Selvaraj told The Hindu that the five per cent hike would not affect the industry as trains would still be cheaper compared to transportation of raw materials for poultry feed using trucks. “The daily feed requirement of the poultry industry in Namakkal region is about 5,000 tonnes. About 50 per cent is brought from Northern States. The freight hike is negligible compared to the expense incurred while truckers revise freight charges when fuel prices go up,” he added.

Tirupur

K. G. Shanmugam, member of Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee (Madurai Division), said that though the Railway Minister had retained the ‘direct’ passenger fares, which was in fact increased recently, he had indirectly triggered an increase in the fares through other means.

“He has announced supplementary charges for super fast trains, cancellation and tatkal, which means the consumer will end up once again paying higher,” he said.

S. Dhananjayan, industry consultant and a senior chartered accountant, said the increase in freight charges would further push up the diesel and LPG cylinder prices as a good chunk of diesel and LPG cylinders were transported through railways.

“Any upward revision of freight charges will mean that oil companies either have to pass it on to the consumers or to be accounted as under-recoveries. In the present situation when the Centre is not in a position to offset the under-recoveries, the possibility is that the consumers will end up paying higher costs,” he pointed out.

Expressing satisfaction over the safety and maintenance aspects of the newly-laid, 85-km-long Salem — Namakkal — Karur broad gauge track, S.K. Mittal, The Commissioner of Railway Safety, southern Circle, Bangalore, said that the inspection report would be submitted to the Railway Board within a week, after which commencement of passenger train service would be decided upon.

Speaking to reporters at Salem Railway Junction on Wednesday, Mr. Mittal said that inspection has been carried out in two phases, inch-by-inch track inspection through trolley, and the other by running high speed train.

Data was collected about safety of tracks, level crossings, infrastructure and signalling.

The information would be analysed and a report submitted in a week, he added.

He said that officials had been asked to complete on time, pending works and small deficiencies related to infrastructure.

Stating that maintenance staff availability is a concern, he said that the division has been asked to fulfil human resource deficiencies before operating the passenger train service.

Mr. Mittal later inspected the sector in a high speed locomotive that was operated at a speed between 120 and 130 kilometres per hour.

Earlier in the day, he inspected the track between Mallur and the Salem Junction in a trolley.

During the three-day inspection that began on Monday from Karur Junction, Mr. Mittal, accompanied by engineers, inspected the entire stretch before completing the Phase I at Salem Junction on Wednesday.

Salem Railway Division Manager Sujatha Jayaraj, Assistant Divisional Railway Manager V. Thavamani Pandian, Chief Administrative Officer (Construction) Vijaya Kumaran, Chief Engineer A.K. Khandelwal, and senior engineers accompanied Mr. Mittal during the track inspection.

The project, initially begun in 1997 at a cost of Rs. 225 crore was revised to Rs. 680 crore after land acquisitions delayed the project.

Finally, after completion of track works, freight service began on the sector in November last year.

Passenger services would be operated on the new broad gauge line between Karur and Salem linking Namakkal probably in March, Commissioner of Railway Safety S.K.Mittal indicated here on Wednesday.

Rounding off his three-day inspection of the newly-laid tracks and allied facilities en route, Mr. Mittal told presspersons that he would submit his inspection report and recommendation to the Railway Board in a week after which the board would process the report before forwarding that with its observation to the Railway Ministry for consideration.

It is probable that passenger services might be permitted from March.

Topping the three-day inspections, Mr.Mittal and team conducted the speed trial of train between Salem and Karur on Wednesday.

The inspection special travelled from Salem junction to Karur junction via Namakkal station, a distance of 85 km, on the new track in flat 45 minutes.

Touching a high speed of 120 km per hour, the inspection trial helped the CRS ascertain the strength and durability among other factors of critical railway operational components and facilities.

The mandatory CRS inspection encompassed critical analysis of the functional and safety aspects of level crossings, stations, staff on duty, track, structures and signal system besides passenger and public safety.

இந்த நிகழ்ச்சிக்கு விநாயகா மிஷன் சேர்மன் டாக்டர் ஏ.சண்முக சுந்தரம் தலைமை வகித்தார். இயக்குனர் என்.வி. சந்திரசேகர், டாக்டர்கள் எழில்வேந்தன், மீனாட்சி சுந்தரம், மற்றும் அசோகன், ராமசாமி, எம்.இளங்கோ, அருள்மணி, ஆனந்தன், ரவிக்குமார், கணேசன், தில்லைராஜன் உள்பட பலர் கலந்து கொண்டனர். இதில் கோட்ட மேலாளர் சுஜாதா உள்பட ரெயில்வே துறை உயர் அதிகாரிகளும் கலந்து கொண்டனர்.

இதன் பின்னர் பொது மேலாளர் ராகேஸ்மிஸ்ரா ஜங்சன் ரெயில் நிலையம் முழுவதும் சுற்றி பார்த்து ஆய்வு மேற்கொண்டார். பிறகு அவர் கூறியதாவது:-

சேலம் ரெயில்வே கோட்டத்தை கேரளாவுடன் இணைக்கும் திட்டம் ஏதும் இல்லை. இது வதந்தி. சேலம் ரெயில்வே கோட்டம் வளர்ச்சிக்கு தேவையான உதவிகளை செய்வோம். சேலம் ரெயில்வே கோட்ட கட்டிடம் இன்னும் 6மாத காலத்திற்குள் திறக்கப்படும். இங்கு காலியாக உள்ள 1000-ம் பணியிடங்களை நிரப்ப உரிய நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

சேலம்-கரூர் அகல ரெயில் பாதை அமைக்கும் பணி முழுவதும் முடிவடைந்து விட்டது. இந்த ரெயில் பாதையில் 85 கிலோ மீட்டர் வேகத்தில் ரெயில் இயக்கி பார்க்கப்பட்டுள்ளது என்றும், 110 கிலோ மீட்டர் வேகத்தில் இந்த ரெயில் பாதையில் ரெயில்களை இயக்கலாம் என்றும் ரெயில்வே துறை சேப்டி அதிகாரி தெரிவித்துள்ளார். இதனால் சேலம்-கரூர் அகல ரெயில் பாதையில் விரைவில் பயணிகள் ரெயில் இயக்கப்படும்.

இவ்வாறு அவர் கூறினார்.

இதன் பின்னர் அவர் ஜங்சன் ரெயில் நிலையத்தில் அமைக்கப்பட்டு இருந்த புகைப்பட கண்காட்சியை அவர் பார்வையிட்டார். இதில் முதன்மை மருத்துவ இயக்குனர் ராம்பிரகாஷ், டாக்டர் மோகன் மற்றும் அதிகாரிகள் கலந்து கொண்டனர்.

ராகேஸ் மிஸ்ராவை அம்பேத்கர் மக்கள் இயக்க மாவட்ட தலைவர் ஜங்சன் ஆ.அண்ணாத்துரை, மாநில செயலாளர் ஆசிர்வாதம் மற்றும் நிர்வாகிகள் அம்பேத்கர், பிரபு, இளங்கோ, செல்வராஜ், ஆதி, மணிகண்டன், சந்தோஸ், நந்தன் ஆகியோர் மனு கொடுத்தனர். இதில் ஈரோடு-ஜோலார்பேட்டை பாசஞ்சர் ரெயிலை காட்பாடி வரை நீடிக்க வேண்டும் என்பது உள்பட 11 அம்ச கோரிக்கை நிறைவேற்ற வேண்டும் என தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டு இருந்தது.

சேலம் ஜங்சன் ரெயில் நிலையம் வந்து இருந்த பொது மேலாளர் ராகேஸ் மிஸ்ராவை எஸ்.ஆர்.எம்.யூ கோட்ட தலைவர் பாண்டியன், செயலாளர் கோவிந்தன் மற்றும் நிர்வாகிகள் திரளாக வந்து வரவேற்றனர். பின்னர் அவர்கள் கோரிக்கை மனுவையும் கொடுத்தனர். பிறகு நிர்வாகிகள் கூறியதாவது:-

சேலம் ரெயில்வே கோட்டத்தில் புதியதாக 3 ஆயிரத்திற்கும் மேற்பட்ட பணியிடங்களை நிரப்ப வேண்டும். ஆயிரத்திற்கும் மேற்பட்ட பணி இடங்கள் காலியாக உள்ளது. இதை நிரப்ப வேண்டும். ரெயில்வே கோட்ட மருத்துவமனை ஈரோட்டில் விரைந்து கட்டி முடிக்கப்பட வேண்டும். எல்லா தொழிலாளர்களுக்கும் 8 மணி நேரம் வேலை செய்ய உரிய நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும். பதவி உயர்வு உடனே வழங்க வேண்டும். இந்த கோரிக்கைகளை மனுவாக பொது மேலாளரிடம் கொடுத்து இருக்கிறோம். எங்களது கோரிக்கைகளை விரைவில் அவர் நிறைவேற்றுவார் என நம்புகிறோம்.

SALEM: Spiking rumours that the Salem Railway Division would be merged with Palghat, Southern Railway General Manager Rakesh Mizra today said 1,000 vacancies of various posts in the division would be filled in a short period.

Speaking to reporters here, Misra said the division would have its office buildings in six months.

There were 1,000 vacancies of various posts in the division and these would be filled shortly, Misra, who recently assumed charge of Southern Railway, said.

He also said safety clearance had been given for operation of trains on the newly laid Salem-Karur line

Under no circumstances Salem Railway Division would be merged with Palakkad Railway Division, Rakesh Mishra, General Manager, Southern Railway, said here on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters at the Salem Railway Junction before carrying out inspection on the Salem – Tirupattur section, Mr. Mishra said that the merger reports are rumours and there was no question of merging with erstwhile division.

He said that S.K. Mittal, Commissioner of Railway Safety, who carried out the inspection on the newly laid Salem – Namakkal – Karur broad gauge sector, has allowed passenger train service to be operated up to a speed of 85 kmph and that the administration was in consultation with the Railway Board for operating passenger train service. :cheers:

“Efforts will be made to increase the speed from 85 kmph to 110 kmph once the service begins”, he said.

About the prevailing water shortage at railway stations, Mr. Mishra said that efforts are being made to sort out the issue and adequate water would be made available. He later inaugurated a medical assistance booth on the premises that was being run by a private hospital. “Passengers with genuine ticket can get free treatment at the booth,” he said. Officials asked to repair platform 1 roof at Karur junction

The new Salem-Namakkal-Karur broad gauge track is ready for use and it is just a matter of time when passenger services will be operated on the stretch, Salem Divisional Railway Manager Sujatha Jayaraj said on Wednesday.

After inspecting Karur junction, she said that the Commissioner for Rail Safety has certified track worthiness of the stretch and plans are under way to primarily operate the proposed Chennai Central-Palani Express, Nagercoil-Bengaluru Express and Chennai-Madurai Duranto Express besides indicating the possibility of introducing a Salem-Karur passenger service in the initial stages.

The DRM directed the officials to repair and renovate the damaged platform 1 roof at the junction.

She also ordered the officials to carry out repair work to the dilapidated compound walls in some sections of the railway area here.

Ms. Sujatha also informed that Perugamani station would be renovated and said that drinking water facilities, power availability and the like would be developed at all stations en route.

The DRM rewarded Mahadanapuram station with Rs. 5,000 for proper upkeep of record; Rs. 1,000 for the Perugamani Station Master; and another Rs. 500 for his assistant for exemplary work.

Thavamani Pandi, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Salem, accompanied the official during the inspection.

Salem Railway Division bags award for overall efficiency

Salem Railway Division has bagged the runners-up for the overall efficiency among all the divisions in Southern Railway.

A release said that during the Railway Week function held in Chennai on Friday, Divisional Railway Manager Sujatha Jayaraj received the shield from E. Sreedharan, Advisor, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in the presence of Rakesh Mishra, General Manager, Southern Railway, and G. Narayanan, Additional General Manager, Southern Railway. The division also bagged the Electrical Efficiency shield for the fourth consecutive year and the Personnel Branch of Salem Division has acquired the Best Manpower Planning shield among all the divisions of Southern Railway.

Passenger train service on the Salem — Karur broad gauge track would begin in second week of May, Sujatha Jayaraj, Salem Divisional Railway Manager said here on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters during the 58th Railway Week celebrations, she said that the Railway Board has given the clearance for operating trains after S.K. Mittal, Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle, Bangalore, carried out inspection on the 85-k.m. sector and submitted the report.

“Initially two passenger services each in the morning and evening would be operated, apart from running of Chennai — Madurai Duronto Express and Chennai — Palani Express trains announced in the budget,” she added.

Permission

Railway Board is yet to give permission for the two trains — Coimbatore — Mannargudi Express (Daily) and Coimbatore — Rameswaram Express (Weekly) — that were announced in the budget and also the origination trains from the division, she said.

Earlier, highlighting the performance of the division during the last financial year, Ms. Sujatha said that the overall earnings of the division stand at Rs. 504 crore which is about four crores more than the previous year.

“Passenger sector earnings have grown by eight per cent and arrival and departure of train timings have improved from 90 per cent to 92 per cent,” she added.

She also said that Rs. 12 crore had been spent for improving passenger amenities at various stations and the overall expenses have also been brought down by four per cent.

“The number of train accidents has come down to 7 when compared to 12, the previous year and of the total 99 unmanned level crossings in the division, 67 subways were sanctioned,” the DRM added.

Later she presented meritorious awards to 360 personnel, including 10 officers for their contributions to the growth of the division.

The Best Station (Major) award was bagged by Coimbatore Junction, while Best Station (Minor) was bagged by Morappur Station.

in my point of view, many people are traveling to madurai every day in bus.. for their convenience salem karur psngr train should have to extended upto madurai..

I also have the same doubt. Instead they can have passenger train to Madurai which will be helpful for south bound passengers as we have very less connectivity to south.

Nellai - erode- mayiladuthurai gets divided at Dindugal Junction. one is going to erode and other going to mayiladuthurai. on returning, both divided trains gets join together and travels to nellai

A sumptuous feast is ready to be served. The dining table has been neatly laid out.

The seated guests, hungry though, are eagerly waiting for the delicacies.

Even the pre-meal prayer is through. But then there is no sign of the food reaching the table.

Forced to wait at the table, the people of Karur are aghast at the delay in operating passenger trains on the new Karur-Namakkal-Salem broadgauge track.

The Salem Railway Division authorities have been making noises about passenger train services being operated “soon” on the new track that has been certified by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, S.K. Mittal, following his mandatory inspection for three days in the last week of February. He said that the services could be operated probably in March itself.

He had said that he would submit his report to the Railway Board in a week and it was only a matter of time before the services were operated.

Several officials, including Divisional Railway Manager Sujatha Jayaraj, have been announcing that passenger services would be run on the new track that would put Namakkal on the railway map. But nothing has moved so far.

A fortnight ago, some officials on a routine inspection visit to Karur Junction said passenger services would be operated from the first week of May.

“The Railway Budget was conspicuously mum on the opening of the new track although some trains were announced and they were expected to be operated on the new line. We thought that with the mandatory CRS inspection ending on a high note, services would be operated soon. March and April came and went but there is no sign of trains being run on the new track. We could not fathom what went wrong,” says Train Travellers’ Welfare Association president S. Annadurai.

“The officials have now said that trains would be operated from May first week but there were no preliminary activities so far and we now hope they would run them at least before the end of May,” he says.

The Chennai-Salem-Karur-Palani daily express, extension of Mangalore-Tiruchi Express to Puducherry, and other services announced in the budget await the formal opening of the track section to passenger trains.

Those demands could be met only with the opening of the track to passenger trains, Mr. Annadurai said.

The long-drawn project was completed a few months ago and the authorities were allowing goods trains to pass through the stretch that would reduce the travel between Karur and Salem by 35 km besides saving an hour.

An unseen political hand delaying the project, track not being certified as worthy enough, railways not completing the formalities for operating passenger trains, and rank disdain for the region on the part of the officials are some of theories doing the rounds for the delay.

Whatever be the case the Railways must come clean on the itinerary of operations, say the commuters. Traders and public of the beneficiary districts had been waiting impatiently for services to be operated on the new track for pretty long a time and when the authorities had claimed that all work had been completed, nothing except the odd goods train was moving much to the chagrin of the rail users.

ஆரம்பத்தில் இந்த திட்ட மதிப்பீடு குறைவாக இருந்தது. பின்னர் இந்த திட்டம் ஆண்டு கணக்கில் நடந்து வந்ததால் அதன் மதிப்பு ரூ. 800 கோடியாக அதிகரித்தது.

சேலம்-கரூர் ரெயில் பாதையில் தேவையான இடங்களில் மேம்பாலங்கள், சிக்னல்கள், ரெயில்வே நிலையங்கள், பொதுமக்கள் வந்து செல்ல தேவையான ஏற்பாடுகள் செய்யப்பட்டது. மேலும் இந்த வழித்தடத்தில் முதலில் சரக்கு ரெயில் சோதனை நடத்தப்பட்டது. பின்னர் பயணிகள் ரெயில் சோதனையும் நடத்தப்பட்டது. அனைத்து பணிகளும் முடிந்து தயார் நிலையில் இருந்த இந்த வழித்தடத்தில் கடந்த ஜனவரி மாதத்தில் இருந்து பயணிகள் ரெயில் இயக்கப்படும் என்று அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது. ஆனால் குறிப்பிட்ட படி ரெயில் இயக்கப்படவில்லை.

இதையடுத்து பல்வேறு அமைப்புகள் சார்பில் போராட்டம் நடத்தப்பட்டது. மேலும் ரெயில்வே அமைச்சகம், மற்றும் தென்னக ரெயில்வே பொதுமேலாளர், மற்றும் சேலம் கோட்ட மேலாளர் ஆகியோரிடமும் கோரிக்கை விடுக்கப்பட்டது. மேலும் நேற்று தி.மு.க.எம்.பி. கே.பி. ராமலிங்கம் கோட்ட மேலாளரை நேரில் சந்தித்து மனு கொடுத்தார்.

மேலும் ரெயில்வே போர்டில் இருந்து விழா குறித்த தகவல் வந்தவுடன் ரெயில் இயக்கப்படும் என்று கோட்ட மேலாளர் சுஜாதா அறிவித்தார். இந்த நிலையில் சேலம்-கரூர் ரெயில் பாதையில் வருகிற 25-ந்தேதி முதல் பயணிகள் ரெயில் இயக்கப்படுகிறது.

இதுகுறித்து சேலம் ரெயில்வே கோட்ட மேலாளர் சுஜாதா கூறியதாவது:-

வருகிற 25-ம்தேதி காலை 10.30 மணிக்கு சேலம் - கரூர் அகல ரெயில்பாதையில் பயணிகள் ரெயில் இயக்கப்படுகிறது. இந்த விழாவில் அமைச்சர்கள், அதிகாரிகள் எம்.,பி, எம்.எல்.ஏக்கள் மற்றும் முக்கிய பிரமுகர்கள் கலந்து கொள்கிறார்கள். அன்று 7 பெட்டிகளுடன் சேலம் ஜங்சன் ரெயில் நிலையத்தில் இருந்து பயணிகள் ரெயில் புறப்படும்.

இதுபோல் கரூரில் இருந்து சேலத்திற்கு அதே நேரத்தில் பயணிகள் ரெயில் புறப்படும். 26-ம்தேதி ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை ஒரு நாள் ரெயில் சேவை நிறுத்தப்படும். மறுநாள் முதல் ரெயில் தொடர்ந்து இயக்கப்படும்.

இவ்வாறு அவர் கூறினார். சேலம் - கரூருக்கு கட்டணம் எவ்வளவு என அதிகாரிகளிடம் கேட்டதற்கு, விரைவில் கட்டணம் விவரம் அறிவிக்கப்படும் என தெரிவித்தனர்.
