Dataran Pahlawan >

Hmmm.......it had been halted for 1 1/2 years liao

ANyway they halted it because while diggin for the foundation, they stumbled across A Farmosa's seawall and that site had been protected as an archealogy site. I got some pictures of this archealogy site and I'll post it later ;)

yea....the new rendering looks good :okay: Hopefully they would rejulvinate Mahkota Parade too.......I somehow dislike the tenant mix and certain parts of the interios. And being the most prestigious mall in Melaka (and in such a well-placed location)....well.......it looks kinda sad. The cinema also needed some work ;)

I like the close-up one from Hotel Renaissance showing the Hang Tuah cluster and part of Klebang... Makes the place look like a big city!

actually, sungai melaka cleanup, i am torn: (1) cannot deny that most cities around the world have learnt/are learning to turn back to their waterfronts even if it is small, and so melaka also deserves it, and let's admit it, it's cleaner, looks nicer, etc., but (2) sungai melaka charm was in the run-down kampungs, fishing boats, etc. do they still have that around the studhuys area? i hope so because that was a major part of the place's rustic charm. i really don't know which i prefer...both has positive and negatives. should they refurbish the whole length, or just leave some parts? really hard to say which is more appropriate. and i wonder whether there is any heritage value in the riverfront the way it was before?

(remember entrapment, they filmed it on sungai melaka, then superimposed the bukit bintang towers to pretend that it is KL?)

Sprucing up Malacca River
Story by RANJEETHA PAKIAM and DEBRA CHONG.

A DECADE ago, even the locals would laugh if anyone suggested that the Malacca River would one day match its former glory and draw people from all over the world.
Today, sceptics are being proved wrong. The river is undergoing long overdue improvements.

Some might disagree with the transformation that is taking shape, but rehabilitation has injected new life into this river, once a convenient dumping ground.

The multi-million ringgit project, started in 2003 by the Malacca State Government, is expected to be completed by 2010. Initial efforts included strengthening the embankments and cleaning the river.

Plans are afoot to develop the riverside up to Kampung Morten, a traditional Malay village located 3km upriver.

Sadly, the fishing community which has been living on the both sides of the riverbank for generations will be relocated.

But it’s for a good cause as Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam has a grand vision to turn the Malacca River into another Thames.

The river bank looks so clean and tidy now! I hope they turn it into something like Boat Quay/ Clarke Quay in Sg... A few nice clean tidy cafes along the river would be nice...

River plan for Malacca tourism
Tuesday, June 07, 2005
Story and Photos by THOMAS TAN

MALACCA River, once a dirty and stinking channel, will be transformed into a waterway of lights and colour when the first phase of an RM91.2mil beautification project is completed next month.

Extensive work to clear the river of rubbish, and landscaping by Malacca City Council, has been taking place since the beautification project started in July 2002.

http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2005/6/p24sungai.jpg

Fishermen returning to their berths
add to the picturesque quality of the river

The once muddy riverbanks, from the river mouth in Banda Hilir to Chan Koon Cheng Bridge, and the right side of the river from Kampung Mortem to the Hang Jebat Bridge, have been paved with concrete walkways composed of colourful tiles.

Along the banks are replicas of antique lamp posts and flower pots.

Datuk Bandar Datuk Zaini Md Nor said the first phase of the project would be considered ready once a water treatment plant beside Chan Koon Cheng Bridge is completed in July.

The plant will filter and treat wastewater from the nearby area before it flows into the river.

The state recently set up the River and Beach Corporation to look into the management of the river after Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam led a delegation to visit the famous San Antonio River in January.

Mohd Ali had said the state was following San Antonio's approach in rehabilitation and beautification of the Malacca River to develop river tourism.

He said the San Antonio River attracted 13 million tourists to Texas every year and the Malacca River could do the same for the state.

At present, one company is offering river cruises once a day, depending on the tide.

Mohd Ali said there were plans to introduce water taxis, restaurants and stalls beside the river once the beautification project was complete.

He said that RM52mil had been allocated for the second phase of the project but the date to start work was yet to be fixed.

“We are asking for another RM19mil for the project,” he said.

For phase two, beautification work would take place in Kampung Jawa starting from Hang Tuah Bridge and to Hang Jebat Bridge, said Zaini.

Two CCTVs would be fixed in Jalan Laksamana and Kampung Mortem to monitor security along the river, he added.

In spite of the aggressive cleaning and beautification works, the river is never spared of rubbish thrown by irresponsible persons.

The rubbish is believed to have come from housing areas especially in Kampung Jawa, said Zaini.

He urged residents and visitors not to dump rubbish into the river after such a hefty sum was spent to beautify it, and especially when the state was embarking on programmes to attract tourists to appreciate Malacca River.

San Antonio's Riverwalk is exactly the right idea. I have been there b4 and it's very pretty and great tourist attraction. They should also consider Pari's Siene as a model.

i just dunno why, for the last five years living in malacca (99-03) to be precised...it was one of my favourite moments in mylife..malacca is just fantastic...its not too crowded like kl but yet its developed and yes u can have everything there...from shopping to 5 stars hotels and also nice asam pedas (my favourite ). only one thing that i cant tahan is the attitude of the some daily school students in there (esp malacca high school) always envy with my school...but overall malacca is just one of the nicest place to live in....i cant wait to go there again and obviously visit Mahkota Parade, my fav shopping mall in malacca of all time.......

Malacca is great! It used to be very run-down though. When I was a kid in Muar, my family made frequent visits to the town and I wasn't particularly fond of the place. The Melaka River Esplanade was polluted, and it always amazed me how those monitor lizards were able to survive in those filthy water. I thought they were supernatural beasts or something. The town was haphazard, and most out-of-towners just made quick stops (like for kopi) and then move on to somewhere else. Thankfully things have slowly been changing. The riverfront area is a lot better nowadays. Old buildings are preserved or spruced up. I really appreciate the efforts of Melakans. However, years of neglect still shows in certain quarters and hopefully those holes are patched up too. Oh by the way, something I've always missed in Malacca: The Hainanese Chicken rice with rolled-up round balls of rice and the Cendol with authentic Gula Melaka! You just can't beat those! ;)

nazrey, excellent photos. i'm very impressed with the riverwalk concept - but i'm more concerned about the heritage preservation of the old part of town. they need to stop building new structures in the old part completely and close off car access to the old part of town (like jonker st, etc).

szehoong
September 27th, 2005, 04:05 AM
^^ I dun think they are building anything new in the older part of town ;) Closing off any street in Malaysia (without proper social impact research) could be disastrous as in many pedestrianised streets (save for Petaling Street of course). People simply do not walk here thanks to the weather so if a place is not accessible by car meaning that the place is doomed :D

Seriously....although I love pedestrian-only streets, many do not share the same sentiment :(

RM50,000 incentive to preserve old buildings
Thursday October 13, 2005

THE Malacca city council will hold a competition offering prize money of RM50,000 as an incentive and token of appreciation to property owners who restore and preserve their old buildings.

Datuk Bandar Zaini Md Nor said the competition was expected to start next year, adding that owners of buildings in the heritage zone could take part by submitting their building restoration plans to the council for approval.

“If they are unsure of how to carry out the restoration work, they should consult the experts before starting work,” he said.

Zaini said the owners could get the help of the architect at the council’s conservation department to assist them if they could not afford to pay for the services of experts from the private sector.

He said the council also planned to give away plaques and certificates to those who restored and preserved their buildings.

He said that many owners failed to preserve the authenticity of their buildings and their renovation work was not in accordance with heritage conservation.

AirAsia set to operate from Malacca airport

October 28 2005

ASIA’S leading low-budget airline is poised to start operating at the Batu Berendam Airport in Malacca as soon as its expansion project is completed by the end of 2008.

Describing the airport as “nice and simple”, AirAsia Bhd group chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes said Indonesia will be the main destination for its flights out of Batu Berendam.

“But the routes we will take have not been finalised yet. Everything’s still in the planning stages,” he said.

Fernandes said the airline, which focuses on the Association of South-East Asian Nations and China markets, is also in talks to secure landing rights in Myanmar and Laos.

According to Fernandes, Kuala Lumpur has surpassed Singapore as the centre for low-cost travel in the region.

“Almost 80 per cent of passengers on our aircraft are from the UK, Australia and the US. We’re far, far ahead of Singapore,” he told reporters yesterday after the airline’s Airbus A320 branding launch at Composite Technology Research Malaysia’s (CTRM) plant in Malacca.

The event was held in anticipation of the first of 100 A320 aircraft that will be joining its fleet beginning December 8. Delivery of the remaining aircraft will continue until 2011.

Earlier, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said the project to expand the Batu Berendam airport had been newly awarded and work would begin in the first quarter of next year. The expansion is scheduled to be completed after two years.

The RM120 million project will include a 50-metre airstrip extension, new control tower, new landing terminal and an aerobridge.

CTRM is the source manufacturer and supplier for the Airbus A320’s composite wing component.

“The decision-making point in our purchase of the A320 was that CTRM is the sole producer of the aircraft’s wing package in Asia,” Fernandes said.

“We hope it will eventually benefit not only us, but also Malaysia’s aerospace industry.”

The A320s will gradually phase out the Boeing 737-300s currently operated by the group (comprising AirAsia in Malaysia, Thai AirAsia in Thailand and AWAIR in Indonesia), eventually giving AirAsia the youngest airline fleet in Asia.

AirAsia has also concluded a US$750 million (US$1 = RM3.77) purchase agreement with CFM International for the CFM56-5B engine to power its A320 aircraft.

It has also signed an OnPointSM Solution engine service agreement with General Electric Co for the maintenance, overhaul and repair of the company’s 129 CFM56-5B engines that will power its new fleet of Airbus aircraft.

Melaka Aims To Be Largest Shopping Venue In Southern Peninsula

Anonymous writes: October 29, 2005 17:59 PM

MELAKA, Oct 29 (Bernama) -- The Melaka Government wants to make the state the largest shopping venue in southern Peninsular Malaysia, attracting shoppers also from Singapore and Indonesia's Sumatra, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Ali Rustam said.

More shopping centres would be built in collaboration with the private sector to meet the ever-increasing response from shoppers, he added.

"Our market potential is seven million people, including from Singapore and Sumatra, apart from Malaysians," he said when opening the "Ekspo Melaka 2005" at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh near here.

Mohamed Ali said shopping centres were one of the 12 sub-sectors of tourism being popularised by the state government, and they were a draw for foreign tourists including those from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan and Vietnam.

He also said that trade exhibitions and expositions would be held more frequently in the state in co-operation with the private sector.

Mohamed Ali said the state government had projected 4.6 million tourist arrivals this year, up from the original target of 4.4 million, due to the introduction of new tourism products such as the Melaka River, MITC, attractive landscaping and parks as well as existing products such as the museum, zoo, shopping centres and homestay programme.

He said 3,340,064 tourist arrivals were recorded between January and September this year, well above the 2,917,890 arrivals for the same period last year. For the whole of last year, the state recorded four million tourist arrivals.

The exposition launched today will be on until Nov 6, and markets various products and services at about 400 booths operated by entrepreneurs from Melaka, Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Taiwan and Bangladesh.

Zed
November 23rd, 2005, 06:27 AM
^^ Yes. It is the city council building (used to be called Graha something). But its has since been re-branded as Bandaraya Mall I guess - in reference to the pedestrian mall in front of the building :)

triple-j
November 23rd, 2005, 07:31 AM
We are used to think anything with mall at the end of building's name as shopping mall. He he....sometimes it is just simply referring to the pedestrian mall. Since talking about this, the usage of mall instead of walk could refreshing actually. Plus it is actually good to have the actual 'square' for whatever square we have here in Msia (Berjaya Times Square, etc) besides Merdeka Square.

Who knows since there are plenty development along coastal areas, the trend might continue with the usage of 'Quay' and 'Harbour' . Whichever developers use those terms first.....(not that there is anything wrong with that :) )

peace out!!!

Malacca targets RM1b in investments
Monday December 12, 2005

THE Malacca government is targeting a total of RM1bil in domestic and foreign investments in the state by the end of this year, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.

Till the end of September, the state had approved the setting up of 38 companies in the state with total investment of RM538mil, he said.

“We are confident of hitting the target since the investments of the last three months of the year are yet to be included,” he said after launching Impressive Edge Group Berhad in Cheng last week.

The state had total investment of RM1bil last year, he added.

Mohd Ali said that local companies covered 59% or RM316.6mil of the total investment till September this year, while foreign companies invested RM221.4mil or 41%.

Work on airport to start early next year
BY CHRISTINA TAN

WORK to expand the runway of Batu Berendam Airport (http://bbs.ecalm.net/egallery/emelaka/gallery/view_photo.php?set_albumName=album15&id=Dscf0035) in Malacca will start early next year, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said.

“Everything is going smoothly so far. Once the expansion of the runway is completed, the airport will be able to handle Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 aircraft,” he said after a dinner organised by Bukit Katil MCA division recently.

He said the RM120mil project would boost Malacca’s tourism industry further.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the master plan of the expansion project had been completed and work could begin soon.

“We are waiting for approval of the master plan and the engagement of contractors by the Transport Ministry.

“The works can start right after we received the green light,” he said after launching the new manufacturing plant of Impressive Edge Group Berhad in Cheng on the same day.

He said state government had completed land acquisition work for the project.

The expansion project was expected to take one and a half years to two years to complete.

Mohd Ali said the airport would be upgraded to an international airport, which could handle fights from South-east Asia, China and India.

“Airasia, Malaysia Airlines and Indian Airlines are expected to land here,” he said, adding that the state would also welcome Singapore Airlines to land in Malacca.

Park puts a smile on Malaccan faces
Monday January 2, 2006

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2006/1/2/southneast/se_01fountain.jpg

MALACCANS now have a new place to visit, be it for a family outing or a night out for dating couples, at Dataran Bandaraya in front of the city council building in Jalan Ayer Keroh.

The RM4.5mil project by the council was completed ahead of time, in time for the 204th Ruler’s Conference in Malacca from Nov 21 to 24.

“This place is so beautiful that it gives me a feeling that I am holidaying overseas,” said Saadiah Ahmad, 36, a housewife from Taman Seri Serindit.

She said when she told her children they would be going to the park, they became extremely happy.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2006/1/2/southneast/se_06blooming.jpg

BLOOMING COLOURS: Some of the 40,000 plants at Dataran Bandaraya.

“They finish their dinner and shower quickly,” she said with a smile.

It is the first park with a rhythmic water fountain in Malacca.

“My children are especially excited about the water fountain but get disappointed when they are stopped from playing with the water jet,” she said.

Saadiah said she loved to see the flowers and lighted water fountain in the park at night.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2006/1/2/southneast/se_06waterfun.jpg

GOOD TIME: Children playing at a fountain.

She also felt there were not enough benches for visitors and suggested that more be placed at various spots.

“You see, the benches are all occupied and we have no choice but to sit by the water pool,” Saadiah pointed out when met at the ground.

“If the authorities plant a few trees and builds a few pondoks, it will attract tourists and the public during the day.

“Better still if there is a canteen to get a bite,” she said.

Another visitor, Zaiton Neamat, was there with her family for the second time.

“I think the scenery here is good for relaxing. This is why I like to come here with my family,” she said.

Hotels and shopping centres owe RM15m
Monday January 9, 2006

MALACCA: The city council is owed RM20mil in assessment arrears with owners of hotels and abandoned shopping complexes being the main culprits.

Datuk Bandar Datuk Zaini Md Nor said arrears from owners of hotels and abandoned complexes amounted to RM15mil while the rest was owed by individuals.

The council would try hard to recover the arrears, he told reporters after attending the swearing-in ceremony of 75 councillors here on Thursday.

Zaini also said the city council collected RM108mil in revenue last year and projected an increase in its revenue to RM123mil this year.

In a bid to increase the collection of maintenance fees for its flats, the city council will soon hold dialogues with the residents, he said.

He said the council only managed to collect 65% of the maintenance fee from the flat dwellers at the moment.

He said that 20% of the maintenance fees would be channelled into a sinking fund to be used for repairs and the repainting of low-cost flats.

Those who were sworn in earlier were 25 city councillors, 25 councillors from the Alor Gajah Municipal Council and 25 more from the Jasin district council.

The councillors took their oath respectively before Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam at Seri Negeri.

Mohd Ali said the Alor Gajah Municipal Council collected RM22mil in revenue last year and is estimated to receive RM25mil this year. The Jasin District Council received RM12mil last year and is projected to receive RM15mil this year.

4D theatre arrives at resort in Malacca

MALACCA: Going to the cinema will never be the same with the four dimension (4D) theatre that combines 3D movies with chair effects.

The cinema also provides spectacular effects such as wind blowing, water spraying and smell.

Situated at the A’Famosa Resort Cowboy Town, this first-of-its-kind 4D cinema in the state is screening Haunted House while two others movies SOS Planet and Wild Africa are scheduled to be shown soon.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2006/1/10/southneast/p34DTheatre.jpg
Visitors enjoying a movie at the 4D theatre in A'Famosa Resort.

The special effects are to enhance the patron’s experience in the 60-seat cinema,” said A’Famosa Resort business development general manager Ernest Chiam.

“Movie goers are charged RM15 for adults and children for the 20-minute show. It is free for children aged three years and below but their parents have to put them on their laps,” said Chiam.

Pregnant women and those with cardiac problems were not advised to view movies at the cinema, Chiam added.

Briton’s home in Malacca draws public attention
Sunday January 8, 2006
Story and picuture by LEE YUK PENG

MALACCA: The house built by a British couple residing here under the “Malaysia My Second Home” programme has attracted queries from all over Malaysia.

Harry Boswell, 70, and Stephanie Bacon, 64, are flattered by the attention their heat-resistant and energy-saving home in Tiara Melaka Golf Course here has been getting since it was completed last August.

They have even been invited to give a talk on energy conservation at Taylor’s College.

Members of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Condition Engineers based in Singapore and Malaysia have also visited their house.

Boswell designed and built the house, called Cooltek, out of concern for the environment.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2006/1/8/nation/n_pg08boswell.jpg

DOING IT RIGHT: Boswell offering advice to Goh at the site
of his future home in Putra Heights recently.

He said it only cost RM2 a day to run four units of air-condition for 24 hours.

The house has a roof made of white steel to deflect sunlight, two underground chambers to collect cool air, extra thick walls, insulated floors and two layers of glass for windows to keep out the heat.

To dampen noise caused by the steel roof, Boswell stuffed rockwool grounded into fibre between the steel roof and aluminium ceiling.

One of those who visited the house recently was Albert Goh.

Goh is keen to adopt some of the techniques Boswell used to build his own house at Putra Heights.

Boswell even visited the site of Goh’s house to offer advice.

Goh’s contractor has since completed an improved version of the underground air chambers.

Said Boswell: “We welcome people who want to adopt our ideas, all the more to conserve energy.”

He said he was happy that interest in the house allowed him to be active.

His wife said she was flattered.

“We thought we were here only to enjoy the sunshine and wildlife,” she said.

Malacca aims for eight million tourists by 2010
Wednesday February 1, 2006
By KAREN LEE

MALACCA: The Malacca government has set its sight at attracting eight million visitors by the year 2010.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said a couple of new tourism sites would be created including a 24-hour bazaar offering handicraft and souvenirs.

“The year 2007 (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=179402&page=3) is Visit Malaysia Year, and we are focussing on the two most prominent tourist areas in the state, which are Malacca River and Dataran Pahlawan,” said Ali Rustam.

He said the state had obtained approval to erect the Riverbank Tower, which will overlook the coastal area.

“We have other plans, such as a 24-hour bazaar similar to Mustafa Bazaar in Singapore, and we are looking for a suitable area for it,” he said after conducting a site visit at Dataran Pahlawan on Wednesday.

To attract more visitors, the Dataran Pahlawan project would adopt a “lifestyle concept” whereby the whole family would be able to hang out, shop and even play football.

The project is expected to be completed in April this year.

“In addition, we started a Flower Market and a Youth Market at Hang Tuah Walk every Sunday and Wednesday respectively,” added Mohd Ali.

He said the state would conduct international events such as the One District One Industry programme on Mar 31 at Malacca International Trade Centre.

Malacca opts for anti-theft rubbish bins
Saturday February 11, 2006

MALACCA: The City Council is coming out with cement trash bins covered with tiles to prevent thefts.

Datuk Bandar Datuk Zaini Md Nor said the bins could be found at bus stops in Telok Mas and Melaka Raya near the Garden City.

Prior to this, the council had used stainless steel trash bins, each costing about RM200, but they got stolen after five months.

Zaini said he hoped the new trash bins would solve the problem of missing trash bins in the city.

“It is important to have enough trash bins in the city as we are expecting four mllion tourists to Malacca each year,” he said.

Malacca to improve traffic planning
Saturday February 18, 2006

MALACCA: The state will conduct a post mortem on the traffic jam caused by road closures for the Le Tour de Langkawi cycling competition when it was held here last Saturday.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said he had also personally received complaints from motorists who were caught in the jam.

“I even called up state police chief Datuk Senior Asst Comm 1 Ayob Mohamed that day to see how we could ease the jam,” said Mohd Ali when asked to comment on complaints by the public on the traffic jam.

A reader has also written to the letter column in The Star about the jam.

A drive that normally took 15 minutes stretched to at least two hours at the height of the traffic snarl.

Jalan Hang Tuah, one of the main roads in the city, was closed from 10am until 4pm as it was the starting and finishing point for the race.

Other roads closed to make way for the cyclists were Jalan Tun Perak, Jalan Bacang, Jalan Lorong Pandan and from Jalan Tun Razak until the traffic junction at Bukit Piatu before turning into Jalan Air Leleh, Jalan Puteri Hang Li Po and back to Jalan Hang Tuah.

Mohd Ali said when the city was the host of the Rulers’ Conference last November, traffic flow was smooth despite road closures.

“We will find out in the post mortem meeting how to avoid such a jam in future,” he said.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng handed a letter to an aide of the chief minister on Wednesday over the jam.

In the letter, he said the road closures had caused businesses to suffer, especially restaurants and caused inconvenience to motorists.

He said those who suffered losses should be compensated.

New night market open on Fridays and Saturdays
Saturday March 11, 2006

MALACCA: A new pasar malam at Jalan Tun Mamat and Jalan Tun Ali has started for Fridays and Saturdays.

Although, the market was operational yesterday, Datuk Bandar Datuk Zaini Md Nor said applications for hawkers are still open.

“We welcome hawkers of all races to set up their stalls and we plan to have a total of 120 stalls for the area and can even stretch it along the Malacca River,” he said in a press conference on Thursday.

Zaini said hawkers were welcome to sell clothes, souvenier, medications, books, antiques, paintings and others, but not chicken, greens and fish.

The new night market would help increase business activities in the area, said Zaini, adding that the place had become a quiet after the city buses and outstation express bus stations were shifted to Malacca Sentral.

Jalan Tun Mamat would be closed from 4pm onwards on Fridays and Saturdays while Jalan Tun Ali would only be partially closed, he said.

A small lane from the back of Hang Tuah Plaza would be turned into two-lane passage, he said, adding that council officers would help monitor traffic flow in the area.

It is a shopping complex all right but it is not attached to the taller buildings behind it. Those buildings behind the mall is Mahkota Century Hotel ;)
