The island of Delos, isolated in the centre of the roughly circular ring of islands called the Cyclades, near Mykonos, is one of the most important mythological, historical and archaeological sites in Greece. The excavations in the island are among the most extensive in the Mediterranean.
Delos had a position as a holy sanctuary for a millennium before Olympian Greek mythology made it the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis.

The meeting hall of the Poseidoniasts of Beirut housed an association of merchant, warehousemen, shipowners and innkeepers during the early years of Roman hegemony, late 2nd century BC. To their protective triad of Baal/Poseidon, Astarte/Aphrodite and Eshmun/Asklepios, they added Roma.

The House of Cleopatra (no relation to the Egyptian Queen). Entering this home you would have encountered this long hallway with sculptures of the owners (Cleopatra & Diouresis) of the house at the end. To the right was a ballroom with another nice mosaic on the floor and to the left was a garden room with a lovely view of the harbor and the rest of the town. If you're wondering why so many Greek statues are headless, there are two main reasons. The first is that if you're a pirate it's much easier to carry off a head than the entire chunk of marble. The second, is that often the heads were sculpted separately and then screwed into the rest of the statue. There is an entire room of heads back at the Archeological Museum in Athens.

The Terrace of the Lions also dedicated to Apollo by the people of Naxos shortly before 600 BC, had originally nine to twelve squatting, snarling marble guardian lions along the Sacred Way; one is inserted over the main gate to the Venetian Arsenal. The lions create a monumental avenue comparable to Egyptian avenues of sphinxes. (There is a Greek sphinx in the Delos Museum.) Today only seven of the original lions remain.

The Eastern Gate (Golden Gate) is the oldest of the current gates in Jerusalem's Old City walls. The original Eastern Gate of the 2nd Temple (Herod's Temple) is actually below the existing gate. Several years ago someone fell into one of the Muslim graves right in front of this gate, and found an arch which formed the top of the Eastern Gate during the 2nd Temple period. I have seen pictures of this. However, they have now cemented over this, and placed a wrought iron fence around it, so nobody can explore it.

It is through the Eastern Gate that Christians believe the Messiah will return. (Jews also believe that the Messiah will come through this gate.)

Because of this prophecy, Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I sealed off the Golden Gate in 1541 to prevent the Messiah's entrance. The Muslims also built a cemetery in front of the gate, in the belief that the precursor to the Messiah, Elijah, would not be able to pass through

Djemila | Roman Cuicul

Under the name of Cuicul, the city was built during the first century A.D. as a military garrison situated on a narrow triangular plateau. The terrain is somewhat rugged, being located at the confluence of two rivers. Cuicul's builders followed a standard plan with a forum at the center and two main streets, the Cardo Maximus and the Decumanus Maximus, composing the major axes. The city was initially populated by a colony of soldiers, and eventually grew to become a large trading market. The resources that contributed to the prosperity of the city were essentially agricultural (cereals, olive trees and farm).

The Temple of Olympian Zeus, also known as the Olympieion or Columns of the Olympian Zeus, is a colossal ruined temple in the centre of the Greek capital Athens that was dedicated to Zeus, king of the Olympian gods. Construction began in the 6th century BC during the rule of the Athenian tyrants, who envisaged building the greatest temple in the ancient world, but it was not completed until the reign of the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD some 638 years after the project had begun. During the Roman periods it was renowned as the largest temple in Greece and housed one of the largest cult statues in the ancient world.

The Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion was built circa 440 BC by the Greeks. It sits atop a huge cliff, surrounded on three sides by expanses of ocean. No ship that passed through these waters could refuse a prayer to the god of the seas' temple, high above on the sea-side cliff.

The Temple of Hephaestus (Athens, Greece), also known as the Hephaesteum or Hephaesteion is the best-preserved ancient Greek temple in the world.

The temple is located about 500 m north-west of the Acropolis and about 1 km due west of the modern centre of Athens, Syntagma Square. It was built in about 449 BC on what was then the western edge of the city of Athens, in a district which contained many foundries and metalwork shops.

It was therefore dedicated to Hephaestus, the god of blacksmiths and metallurgy and was designed by Ictinus, one of the architects who worked on the Parthenon.

Unlike the Parthenon, the temple has all its columns and pediments intact, and even has most of its original roof. Its friezes and other decorations, however, have inevitably been badly damaged by thieves and looters over the centuries.

It owes its survival to its conversion to a Christian Church, the Church of St George, in the 7th century AD. The survival of the exterior came at the cost of the ancient interior, which was removed and replaced by the structures of a Christian church.

Ancient Corinth derived its prosperity from its position on a narrow isthmus between the Saronic and Corinthian gulfs. Transporting goods across this isthmus was the shortest route from the eastern Mediterranean to the Adriatic and Italy.

Hello community. I am a newbie here and this is probably my first posting. Well, these pictures and images show the construction work done in ancient times. These give truly a nostalgic effect while viewing. It feels good whenever such places are being visited. These buildings tell the stories of their own times and they really are the heritage of their own places and such heritages should be preserved and secured.

Quella di Himera è stata definita da gente del settore la Necropoli più grande d'Europa contando all'incirca 12 mila tombe (un numero impressionante!!!)...Ricordo che la necropoli sorge vicino al campo di una delle Battaglie più grandi del Mondo antico ovvero "La Battaglia di Imera del 480 A.C." che vide opposti Sicelioti e Cartaginesi...Molti caduti della battaglia vennero seppelliti addirittura con il proprio Cavallo ..

The Theatre of Dionysus was a major open-air theatre in Athens, built at the foot of the Acropolis and forming part of the temenos of "Dionysus Eleuthereus" ("Dionysus, the Liberator"). Dedicated to the god of wine and fertility, it hosted the City Dionysia festival. Amongst those to have competed are all of the renowned dramatists of the classical era, such as Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristophanes. A stone-version of the theatre, which was built c. 325 BCE, seated between 14,000 to 17,000 spectators.

After this the theatre fell into disuse and little is recorded until 61 CE where there is evidence of major renovations done by the emperor Nero. The remains of a restored and redesigned Roman version can still be seen at the site today.

Mirje is a location near Postira on island Brač where can be found the remnants of the Benedictine monastery which was mentioned in the Povlja document (Povljanska listina). The monastery complex with the cloister from the Early Christianity period was originally dedicated to St. Stephen. In distinction from other churches and monasteries from the Early Christianity period, Mirje monastery is situated far from the coast. On the foundations of a villa rusticae was built an Early Christian basilica from the 6th century and finally the Benedictine medieval monastery.

Archeological Site of Solunto, near Palermo - Italy

Interesting Phoenician settlement that became Roman

Soluntum (Italian Solunto) was an ancient city of Sicily, one of the three chief Phoenician settlements in the island, situated on the north coast, about 16 kilometres (10 mi) east of Panormus (modern Palermo), and immediately to the east of the bold promontory called Capo Zafferano. It lay 183 metres (600 ft) above sea level, on the southeast side of Monte Catalfano in a naturally strong situation, and commanding a fine view.

Excavations have brought to light considerable remains of the ancient town, belonging entirely to the Roman period, and a good deal still remains unexplored. The traces of two ancient roads, paved with large blocks of stone, which led up to the city, may still be followed, and the whole summit of Monte Catalfano is covered with fragments of ancient walls and foundations of buildings. Among these may be traced the remains of two temples, of which some capitals and portions of friezes, have been discovered. An archaic oriental Artemis sitting between a lion and a panther, found here, is in the museum at Palermo, with other antiquities from this site.

The mysterious ruins of Puma Punku Bolivia. Because of the exact geometric and intricate cuts in the rock, a lot of space cadets want to believe that these ruins were built by Aliens(since aliens with all their advanced technology would not build with advanced synthetic materials, on a new found planet, the way we already do, but out of big megalithic stones with no electricity, pluming, or other advanced implements :nuts:) Aside from all the wackiness some associate with this site, I find it quite astonishing in its own right.

I feel like 80% of the stuff on here is Roman ruins and such, which is cool and all but theres a shit ton of archaeological sites in the world. What about Native American sites like the Mississippian Cultural mounds found throughout the southern US and Mississippi River Valley? Or bronze and stone age sites in Europe?

You can't say that one set of archaeological remains are more important than another. What's important is what they can tell us about the past. An iron age hill fort in Sweden is as important as a bronze age barrow in England, which is as important as a roman villa in France. There are enormous amounts of fantastic archaeology in Europe that isn't roman or greek.

Greek and roman ruins tend to be very photogenic, though.

You can distinguish the one ruin from the other, there are not all the same, some have greatest importance than others. And how you do it? The history and the people that are connected to it. This is why the Greco-Roman world will always take the spotlight, because most sites there are connected to real historical people, and recorded events. Most other civilizations never managed to record history as well, and therefore the importance of their ruins is hampered by lack of good knowledge of the past.

Temple of Athena Apteros Nike (wingless Victory) was built between 427 and 424 BC, during the Peace of Nicias. It is a tetrastyle (four column) Ionic structure with a colonnaded portico at both front and rear facades (amphiprostyle), designed by the architect Kallikrates. It has a prominent position on a steep bastion at the south west corner of the Acropolis to the right of the entrance, the Propylaea.

It was erected on top of the remains of an earlier 6th century BC temple to Athena, demolished by the Persians in 480 BC. The total height from the stylobate to the acme of the pediment while the temple remained intact was a modest 23 feet. The ratio of height to diameter of the columns is 7:1, the slender proportions creating an elegance and refinement not encountered in the normal 9:1 or 10:1 of Ionic buildings. Constructed from white pentelic marble, it was built in stages as war-starved funding allowed.
The friezes of the building's entablature were decorated on all sides with relief sculpture in the idealized classical style of the 5th century BC. The north frieze depicted a battle between Greeks entailing cavalry. The south frieze showed the decisive victory over the Persians at the battle of Plataea. The east frieze showed an assembly of the gods Athena, Zeus and Poseidon, rendering Athenian religious beliefs and reverence for the gods bound up in the social and political climate of 5th Century Athens.

The artist Callimachus is credited with the sculptures of Nikes on the frieze of the Temple of Athena Nike. His reputation in the 2nd century CE was reported in an aside by Pausanias as one "although not of the first rank of artists, was yet of unparalleled cleverness, so that he was the first to drill holes through stones"—that is, in order to enhance surface effects of light and shade in locks of hair, foliage and other details

Callimachus is credited with inventing the Corinthian capital, which Roman architects erected into one of the Classical orders

Considering most asian monuments shown so far date back to the 11-13 centuries, they are actually medieval and not ancient as this thread is about. There is a reason why we don't show cathedrals and castles here.

I think that with 'ruins' we can show any construction partially destroyed that is at least a couple centuries old :dunno:
