Unlicenced shops come under Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation scanner

Chairman of the standing committee on health, education and social justice in Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) Shivanand Muttannavar has revealed that as many as 5,000 shops running business in twin cities have not obtained trade licence.

Speaking to reporters here on Friday, he stated that as per a survey conducted by the revenue officials, there are 15,000 business establishments in Hubli-Dharwad out of which, 30 per cent are operating without licence. The HDMC has taken the issue seriously and has fixed July 17 as the deadline for all the 5,000 shop owners to obtain licence. If shopkeepers fail to get trade licence within the said date, the HDMC will close down all these shops and they have to once again seek fresh licence.

DHARWAD

Dharwad , also known as Dharwar , is a city and a district in India 's Karnataka state.
Dharwad is the administrative seat of the Dharwad District . The municipality of Hubli-Dharwad (resulting from a merger in 1961 with its twin city Hubli , 22 kilometers away) covers an area of 200.23 km². Dharwad is located425 km northwest of Bangalore , on National Highway 4, the main highway between Bangalore and Pune in Maharashtra . The climate is mildly hot during the summer (April-May), and pleasant during rest of the year, as it is at an altitude of about 750m, plus still has a lot of greenery round.
The twin cities have a history behind them dating back to the Hoysala period. Dharwad is famous for its contributions to Indian culture, most notably to classical music and literature, and prestigious educational institutions, such as the KarnatakaUniversity. The Dharwad pedha - amilk-based sweetmeat - from this town is very popular.

Hubli's stinking problem

HDMC officials who are striving to make 'Operation Dirty' a success had better take note.

Their ambitious project that aims at making the city clean and shiny will prove futile if they don't address the public toilet problem on a war footing. There are no adequate number of public toilets in Hubli. The existing public toilets are grossly ignored. The mobile toilets installed by the corporation are in bad shape. Due to lack of maintenance, these portable toilets are filthy and stinking, defeating the very purpose for which they were installed. Hubli has nearly eight lakh population but there are no sufficient public toilets or urinals to meet the requirement. To fill the gap the HDMC installed 10 mobile toilets at different locations. But since they are not cleaned and maintained regularly, most of them are rendered useless. People avoid using them. And the garbage containers kept beside these mobile toilets overflow, turning the surroundings a dump yard.

HUBLI: Times Consumer Expo, a three-day shopping mela began at the Raikar ground in Hubli on Friday. An initiative by the Times Group, the mela was inaugurated by Murusavira Mutt seer Gurusidda Rajayogindra Swamiji. The mela has stalls showcasing the latest in real estate and automobile sectors, household items, electronic items, Ayurveda products, personal care products, furniture and garments. Over 70 products under different categories are up for grabs at the exhibition.

Hundreds of people visited the venue on the opening day. While women thronged stalls selling a wide range of cookers and utensils, youths took fancy to different models of bikes on display.
The expo remains open till Sunday from 11am to 9pm.

Organising Passport Mela frequently suggested

‘Increase number of online appointments to 450 a day’

The second day of the Passport Mela on Sunday at the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) in Hubli received an overwhelming response.

On the first day of the Passport Mela, only 70 persons had approached the Hubli PSK. However on the second day, almost four times the number participated in the mela.

People from various parts of north Karnataka had reached the PSK before 9 a.m. on Sunday although it opened only at 10 a.m.

Many of them had come to know about the Passport Mela through the media while some had come after being informed about the same by passport agents.

The people were given the application forms for the passport and were asked to fill up the form manually. Those who finished filling up the application forms were then allowed inside to stand in the queue to submit their application forms at the counter. Many of the applicants were those who had already applied online but were unable to get the appointment at the Hubli PSK. Harish C. Patil, a teacher from Haveri, was happy that his brother Vignesh C. Patil (a BCA student) got a chance to directly submit the applications.

Smita Jadhav of Hubli, who used to work earlier in a stock broking firm, told The Hindu that she was fed up of trying to secure online appointment as her repeated attempts had failed. “Within two or three minutes after 6 p.m. the appointments would get exhausted. In fact, I had complained about the issue to the staff at the Hubli PSK. But they too were helpless”, she said.

“Surprisingly getting online appointment through the agents seems to be easy. They asked me Rs. 300 for getting online appointment”, she said.

Rashmi G. Huvin, an engineering graduate from Harihar had come to Hubli PSK along with her parents after having tried for over 15 days to get the online appointment. “I would log in by 5.55 p.m. but as soon as the clock struck 6 p.m. the website would suddenly become very slow. On a few occasions, appointment timings were displayed but by the time I selected one, there would be instructions asking to come back the next day”, Rashmi said.

Rashmi was naturally happy to get an opportunity to submit the applications directly. Although her application was not accepted for want of documents, the applications of her mother and father were accepted. Her father, Devaraj Huvin, said that such melas should be held more frequently.

While most of the applicants were thankful to the authorities for organising the Passport Mela, they felt that considering the number of people approaching the Hubli PSK, the number of online appointments should be increased. At present, the Hubli PSK is allotted 265 appointments each day. Considering the rush at the PSK there should be 450 appointments each day for the benefit of north Karnataka people.

Dharwad to host Railway table tennis championship

The South Western Railway will hold the 60th All-India Inter-Railway Table Tennis Championship from July 5 to 9 at the District Sports Indoor Stadium in Dharwad.

Inaugurating the First Invitational Inter-Club Table Tennis Championship hosted by the SWR Sports Association (SWRSA) here on Saturday, Deputy General Manager of SWR and vice-president of the SWRSA U. Krishna Murthy said that many national- and international-level table tennis players would be participating in the event.

He said that for the first time, the SWRSA had hosted an invitational TT tournament and it had received an overwhelming response from TT clubs in Hubli, Dharwad and Belgaum. Lauding the initiative taken by the SWRSA in organising the event, Financial Adviser and Chief Accounts Officer of the SWR M. Ramachandran said that such initiatives would definitely encourage the talented table tennis players in the State.

Deputy General Manager of SWR and General Secretary of the SWRSA S.K. Gupta said the assistance provided by local sports associations had encouraged them to organise TT championship.

Seventy table tennis players are participating in the tournament being conducted on league basis. Anirban Roy Choudhary, Jaydip Das, Sagayaraj, P.R. Arun, Abhishek, Sahana Kulkarni are among the top ranked players participating in the championship.

2 years back, i also experienced same problem with getting online appointment for passport for my daughter, i tried for 2 consecutive days without success, later i had to go with agent and get my work done in tatkal, as my stay in hubli was only 10 days that time. May be there is some trick involved here.

Ellarigu Namaskara, I'm a new user, got to know of this forum by an email in Hubli-City e-group. This forum is far more active and I appreciate the enthusiasm.
Manjunath, as you may be aware, the Hubli article in wikipedia has become a mess and is in pathetic state. I want to improve it to a level where articles on Bengaluru, Mumbai or London are.
I noticed you have posted very nice images of Hubli city. I think your images are of bit low resolution perhaps you have used a cell phone to take them. I want to use some of your images in the article but I need good quality photos with high resolution, also you need to release the images under GPL/Wikimedia Commons license. May be you can use a digital camera if you have one.
What do you think? can we collaborate on that? help in this regard from other forum members is most welcome.:)

Manjunath you have a 12 MP camera,next time you go out please carry your camera with you.Dr yaqoob too has posted good images varuna,you check that in hubli-dharwad projects thread,loved his dharwad science center updates.

Thanks sujay, I live in hyderabad hometown is Hubli.

Manjunath, as you may be aware, the Hubli article in wikipedia has become a mess and is in pathetic state. I want to improve it to a level where articles on Bengaluru, Mumbai or London are.
I noticed you have posted very nice images of Hubli city. I think your images are of bit low resolution perhaps you have used a cell phone to take them. I want to use some of your images in the article but I need good quality photos with high resolution, also you need to release the images under GPL/Wikimedia Commons license. May be you can use a digital camera if you have one.
What do you think? can we collaborate on that? help in this regard from other forum members is most welcome.:)

Many people from Dharwad don't like the split. But in the last 5-6 years, it is true that Shettar and his team has always pushed development of Hubli city only, though he could have done a lot to Dharwad, as he has good hold over Dharwad also. I put the blame on local MLA Bellad also. Any new initiative has to be in Hubli first. As a result now-a-days many in Dharwad are not happy, as there is hardly any real progress in Dharwad.

One glaring example would be - Kala Bhavan. It is closed for more 2 years, and its condition today is pathetic. There have been many, many requests to Shettar to arrange some funds, Dharwad being cultural city, being nothing has happened.

A lot of projects like Sadhankeri lake devp happened because of central govt grant of 3.5 crores. The universities got grant, thanks to central govt. What Dharwad got was Railway Good shed from Hubli which no one wanted.

But Dharwad people are peace loving, may be to extreme level. That is a major disadvantage. IMO, Mysore/Belgaum people are quite active, but that is a different topic. But hoping for the best, with Shettar/Ashok being CM / DyCM....

27 dengue cases reported in Hubli


HUBLI: Fear of outbreak of dengue has gripped the people of twin cities with 16 new dengue cases being reported in the district in the few weeks.
Thanks to corporation and district administration which have failed to alert the people to keep themselves safe from the dengue which is mainly spreading because of lack of cleanliness and dirty environment.

It has become habit for the authorities to take the measures to deal with dengue when there is hue and cry over the problem but they never come to the rescue the people before the surface of dengue case.

It seems nothing could change the style of functioning of the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) which is so lethargic and indifferent to the civic issues particularly to clean the overflowing gutters, dustbins, and spray the chemicals to kill the larva's which spread the deadly diseases like dengue.

Even though the alert has been sounded by the government health department a few months back to make the proper arrangements to contain the spread of dengue, nothing has been done in the city to deal with dengue fever.

DHO N M Angadi said that about 27 cases of dengue reported in district and we have already made arrangements of adequate medicine to supply to the affected places. We are also holding awareness camp to keep people alert about dengue.

Here also (In Singapore) few cases of Dengue are reported and health officials are inspecting individual flats in apartments to check cleanliness and guiding people with to maintane cleanliness inside and surroundings. Fogging is taking place in all the apartments. So the has to be done in twin cities to check the dengue spreading..

ರೈತರಿಂದ ಉತ್ಪನ್ನಗಳನ್ನು ಖರೀದಿಸುವ ವರ್ತಕರನ್ನು ಎಪಿಎಂಸಿಯಡಿ ತರುವ ಬದಲಾಗಿ, ಬೇಳೆಕಾಳು, ಅಕ್ಕಿಯನ್ನು ಮಾರಾಟ ಮಾಡುವ, ಮಿಲ್*ಗಳಿಂದ ಬರುವ ಉತ್ಪನ್ನಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾರಾಟ ಮಾಡುವ ವರ್ತಕರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯವನ್ನೂ ಕೇಳದೇ ಏಕಾಏಕಿ ಸ್ಥಳಾಂತರ ಮಾಡುವ ನಿರ್ಧಾರ ಮಾಡಿರುವುದು ಕಾನೂನು ಬಾಹಿರ. ಸ್ಥಳಾಂತರದ ಅಧಿಸೂಚನೆ ಹೊರಡಿಸಿರುವ ಕ್ರಮವೇ ಕಾನೂನು ಬಾಹಿರ ಎಂದು ವರ್ತಕರ ಪರವಾಗಿ ನ್ಯಾಯವಾದಿ ಪಾಟೀಲ್ ಬಲವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ವರ್ತಕರ ಪರವಾಗಿ ವಾದ ಆಲಿಸಿದ ನ್ಯಾಯಾಧೀಶರು ಮೂರು ತಿಂಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಸ್ಥಳಾಂತರಕ್ಕೆ ತಡೆಯಾಜ್ಞೆ ನೀಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ನಗರದ ಹೃದಯಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿನ ಅಕ್ಕಿಹೊಂಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೃಷಿ ಹುಟ್ಟುವಳಿಗಳ ಸಗಟು ವಹಿವಾಟನ್ನು ನಿಷೇಧಿಸಿ ಎಪಿಎಂಸಿ ಕಾರ್ಯದರ್ಶಿ ಪಾತಲಿಂಗಪ್ಪ ಕಳೆದ ಏಪ್ರಿಲ್ ಒಂದರಂದು ಆದೇಶ ಹೊರಡಿಸಿದ್ದರು.

ನಗರದ ಗಾರ್ಡನ್ ಪೇಟೆ, ಎಲೆಪೇಟೆ, ಬಮ್ಮಾಪುರ ಓಣಿ, ಹಿರೇಪೇಟೆ, ತಂಬದವರ ಓಣಿ, ಬೂಸಪೇಟೆ, ಕಂಚಗಾರ ಓಣಿ, ಅಕ್ಕಿಹೊಂಡ, ಜವಳಿಸಾಲ, ಬಾರದಾನಗಲ್ಲಿ, ಶೀಲವಂತ ಗಲ್ಲಿ, ಅಳಗುಂಡಗಿ ಓಣಿ, ಮಠಪತಿಗಲ್ಲಿ, ಸಿಂಪಿಗಲ್ಲಿ, ಗಬ್ಬೂರಗಲ್ಲಿ, ವಿರಾಪುರ ರಸ್ತೆ, ರಾಧಾಕೃಷ್ಣಗಲ್ಲಿ, ವಾಳವೇಕರ ಗಲ್ಲಿ, ಇಟಗಿ, ಮಾರುತಿಗಲ್ಲಿ, ಬೆಂಡಿಗೇರಿ ಓಣಿ, ಪಗಡಿ ಓಣಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ವಹಿವಾಟು ಅನಧಿಕೃತವಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ವ್ಯತಿರಿಕ್ತವಾಗಿ ವಹಿವಾಟು ನಡೆಸಿದರೆ ಅಂತಹ ವರ್ತಕರ ಮೇಲೆ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಕೃಷಿ ಉತ್ಪನ್ನ ಮಾರುಕಟ್ಟೆ ವ್ಯವಹಾರ ಶಾಸನ 1966 ಕಲಂ 8(2)ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕರಣ ದಾಖಲಿಸುವುದಾಗಿ ಪಾತಲಿಂಗಪ್ಪ ಘೋಷಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಆದರೆ ಹೈಕೋರ್ಟ್ ನೀಡಿರುವ ತಡೆಯಾಜ್ಞೆ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎಪಿಎಂಸಿ ಹೇರಿದ ನಿಷೇಧಕ್ಕೆ ಭಾರಿ ಹಿನ್ನಡೆ ಉಂಟಾದಂತಾಗಿದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲದೇ ತತ್*ಕ್ಷಣಕ್ಕೆ ಸ್ಥಳಾಂತರವೆಂಬ ಬೀಸುವ ದೊಣ್ಣೆಯಿಂದ ಪಾರಾಗಿರುವ ವರ್ತಕರಿಗೆ ಹೋರಾಟವನ್ನು ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ತೀವ್ರಗೊಳಿಸಲು ಸಮಯಾವಕಾಶ ದೊರೆತಂತಾಗಿದೆ.

HDMC mulls rationing water supply in cities

HUBLI: The fast depleting water level in Malaprabha reservoir is likely to play spoilsport to the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC)'s move to extend the 24x7 water supply scheme to other wards. Moreover, there is a fear that the continuing dry spell may hit the present water supply system. For the first time in the past 10 years, water level in the reservoir has come down to just 3.155 TMC from 37.04 TMC. Both the cities depend on Malaprabha reservoir near Soundatti for their water requirements. It is after 10 years, the water level has touched 39 feet from 79.5 feet.

If the rain clouds continue to play hide and seek, the corporation will have to resort to rationing of drinking water in the twin cities. HDMC, which is supplying water 24x7 to eight wards in Hubli- Dharwad on a pilot basis, was contemplating extending the same to other wards. These wards are getting water once in 3-4 days only. However, the continuing dry spell in the north Karnataka region is likely to force the corporation to rethink. Jayaram, water board executive engineer of Hubli division, said the dip in water level will not affect drinking water supply for 2-3 months. "However, it may cause water scarcity in the long run. Things will be normal only if Khanapur and surrounding areas receive good rain this time," he added. "A meeting of water board engineers, HDMC officers and experts will be held on Monday to discuss rationing of water. We will decide whether to ration drinking water from Monday or next week. But rationing of water will be done if we don't receive water to Malaprabha reservoir," HDMC commissioner Y S Patil said.

‘Aadaab Arz Hai’ ghazal mehfil in Hubli on July 1

The connoisseurs of music of Hubli Dharwad will get a chance to enjoy the soothing ghazals in the voice of Ustad Faiyaz Khan in Hubli on July 1.

As part of Gangubai Hangal’s birth centenary year celebrations and to pay tribute of the ‘King of Ghazals’ Mehdi Hassan who died recently. Narayan Academy of Hindustani Classical Music has organised the programme.

The live ‘mehfil of ghazals’ with Ustad Faiyaz Khan will be held at Biotech Auditorium of BVB College of Engineering and Technology, Hubli, on July 1 at 6.15 p.m.

Academy president Prakash Hangal, vice-president Mahesh Hangal and other office-bearers told presspersons here on Thursday that the programme “Aadaab Arz Hai” was academy’s way of paying tribute to the legendary ghazal singer.

They said that the academy which took birth with the objective of conducting quality music programmes in the twin cities had been able to organise programmes that had won the hearts of the music lovers. “We started off with a plan to organise at least two big programmes in a year. The ghazal programme is our fifth programme and is part of the birth centenary year celebrations of Gangubai Hangal”, they said.

The entry to the concert is free.

Born into a family of musicians of Kirana Gharana, Faiyaz Khan started his music training under the guidance of his father Ustad Abdul Quadar Khan (a senior artiste in AIR) for Sarangi and vocal. His grandfather was a court musician in Mysore Palace and the Nawabs of Hyderabad.

Faiyaz Khan learnt tabla at the same time under the guidance of Pandit Basavaraj Bendigeri and Ustad Mammullal Sangaunkar. He started performing as a teenager and participated in several music competitions and won lots of awards. He has provided Sarangi accompaniment to many noted musicians such as Gangubai Hangal, Pandit C.R. Vyas, Prabha Atre, Pandit Ajay Ponankar, and so on. After his father’s demise, he continued his training under Pandit Ramnarayan for five years at Mumbi before moving to Bangalore to work in the South Indian film industry.

He has worked with several music directors and composed several Kathak ballets. He is a sought-after ghazal singer and given ghazal concerts in several major cities of the country.

Footpaths teeming with vendors


Hubli: There seems to be no end to pedestrians' woes in the fast growing city of Hubli. Despite repeated appeals by residents to the HDMC and protests by various citizens' forums, vendors continue to encroach footpaths in the city. Narrow roads and even narrower footpaths often leave people at their wits' end.

Main roads and interior roads of the city like Janata Bazar, Chennamma Circle, Lamington road, station road, Dajibanpeth and roads near old bus stand footpaths are swarming with small vendors, who run petty shops there, scot-free. People have to wriggle through the narrow pavements, or walk on the roads, risking their lives and limbs.

And while the pedestrians suffer, the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation is in slumber. The anti-encroachment drives carried out by the corporation once in a blue moon are nothing but an eye-wash. Vendors don't give a hoot to the orders and notices issued by the corporation. And in cases where footpaths are vacated following the HDMC fiat, it is only for a short period. Vendors come back to the footpaths within no time, and the story repeats all over again.

It is not just about vendors doing business on footpaths. Even the members of the public are to blame for making the pavements clumsy. Some people park their two-wheelers on the footpaths, throwing all rules to the wind. Venting out his anguish, pedestrian Noor Ahmed Doddmani told the Times of India that shopkeepers have extended their shops onto the footpaths in several places and small vendors continue to sell their items like vegetables, fruits and flowers sitting on the pavements. "Life has become hell for pedestrians in the city. The authorities must implement the rules strictly and take action against the violators," he said.

HDMC commissioner Y S Patil told TOI: "We will start anti-encroachment drive from next week to clear footpaths. According to the high court order, vendors cannot be vacated from the pavements unless provided an alternative place. I have personally visited places like Dajibanpeth, old Hubli bus stand and Janata Bazar and witnessed the state of the footpaths there.

Recently we cleared the footpath in Keshwapur and we will take suitable action to make way for pedestrians on footpaths in other parts of the city."

HUBLI: Empty sites remain an eyesore in the city. Due to lack ofmaintenance, these sites are full of garbage and have turned breeding ground for mosquitoes. Faced with the fear of dengue spreading in Hubli, mayor Panduranga Patil on Saturday warned the owners of empty sites to keep their sites clean, failing which a show cause notice will be slapped on them.

Cleanliness and sanitation was the top agenda at the general body meeting of the HDMC held on Saturday

The mayor said if the site owners fail to clean the sites even after being served thenotice, the corporation will send its workers for cleaning and the charges will be added to the property tax on site, to be paid by the owner.

He called upon site owners to cooperate with the corporation in keeping the city clean.

Several corporators poured in their woes at the meeting with respect to lack of cleanliness in their wards. They said garbage is not being cleared regularly and mounds of garbage heaps on the roadside are causing diseases. Deepak Chinchore, former opposition party leader of the HDMC said that the corporation has failed to keep the city clean, resulting in the rise in dengue cases.
Dasharath Wali, opposition partyleader also raised his voice about lack cleanliness in the city and said 'Operation Dirty' has not been implemented in severalwards, and people have not got any buckets or containers to keep the garbage. BJP Replying to a question by the corporators,Shivananda Muttannavar, chairman of the standing committee for public health and social justice said he has prepared many plans regarding cleanliness in the city, but health officers and other officers of thedepartment are not cooperating with him.
HDMC commissioner Y S Patil saidcleanliness drive will be taken upin the city. The executive engineer for solid waste management will be in-charge of the works.

50,000 saplings to be planted in Dharwad district in five years

Forest Department to distribute two lakh saplings among farmers in Dharwad

In the next five years, 50,000 saplings would be planted across Dharwad district. Addressing a gathering after inaugurating ‘Vanamahotsava’ organised jointly by the State Bank of India, Hubli-Dharwad Nagarika Parisara Samiti and the Forest Department in Dharwad on Sunday, Deputy Commisioner Darpan Jain said initially 1,000 saplings each would be planted in Hubli and Dharwad. Mr. Jain called on people to take care of the saplings for at least the first three years. Mr. Jain appealed to the public to extend financial aid for getting the tree guards ready and also help the district administration in its endeavour to protect the green belt. Divisional Forest Officer V.M. Halagatti said that the Forest Department had planned to plant 6 lakh saplings across the district and in Hubli-Dharwad alone 14,000 saplings of various plant varieties would be planted. He said that the department had launched a scheme for distributing 2 lakh saplings to the farmers in the district and in addition to it, 35,000 saplings would be distributed to all the government schools in the district.

Presiding over the function, State Bank of India’s Deputy General Manager Venugopal Reddy said that it was the responsibility of everyone to conserve the environment. As part of its go-green initiative, the bank had set up Green Channel Counters where paperless transactions would be held.

Mr. Venugopal Reddy handed over a cheque of Rs. 2 lakh on behalf of the SBI to the Deputy Commissioner towards planting of 2,000 saplings and providing them with tree guards.

HUBLI: Dharwad district administration is now seriously contemplating to maintain eco system and keep the green-belt intact in district.

As first step towards its commitment to maintain the ecological balance, the district administration has decided to plant around 20000 saplings in district.

Deputy Commissioner Darpan Jain, said, that district administration will plant 20000 saplings in Dharwad district this monsoon. 1,000 saplings each would be planted in Hubli and Dharwad while 6,000 saplings would be planted in rural areas.

Jain also expressed his concern over the fall in the survival rate of the saplings which are planted along the roadside and asked the people and other organizations to take care of saplings planted along the road side and to protect trees at least for first 2-3 years.

Seeking the help of NGOs, Business fraternity, Banks, general public and other organizations to protect the trees, he also made an appeal them to extend financial
help for getting tree-guards and help the district administration in its efforts to keep the green-belt intact.

I'm trying to find out some books/online resources that tell about Hubli's history. I need this to update wikipedia article about hubli. I did lot of searching online most of the links are just a copy of what wikipedia hubli article says already. So if someone has books on this, can you please scan pages that deal with hubli's history and share them with me.?
It is easy for those who reside in hubli, as one can go to a local library, find the right book and take cellphone pictures of pages that deal with the subject.

Hubli to have additional sub-registrar’s office soon

Deputy Commissioner Darpan Jain said here on Thursday that a proposal to set up an additional sub-registrar’s office in Hubli had been submitted to the State government.

Speaking to presspersons here, he said the office was required to reduce the workload at the sub-registrar’s office, where nearly 15,000 sale deeds were being registered every year.

The sub-registrar’s office here was also processing the maximum number of documents in the State, he said and added that an additional four computers and four computer operators had been sought for the office.

The proposal was before the Finance Department and was expected to be approved soon, he said.

‘Form separate taluks’

The Taluk Reorganisation Committee had been urged to form separate taluks for Hubli urban and Dharwad urban with separate staff. The population in Hubli city alone was six lakh, and the taluk office here was issuing more than 12,000 certificates every month, he said.

Along with Nemmadi Kendras, Nada Kacheris would also be set up in all 14 hoblis of the district by September. Deputy tahsildars at Nada Kacheris would be delegated more powers required to issue different certificates. Dharwad district topped the State in disposal of mutation cases, he added.

Integration of software

The Bhoomi and Kaveri software was being integrated to prevent disputes arising owing to false information given while selling the land and this had resulted in a bigger rush at the sub-registrar’s office. The Bhoomi software was also being integrated with banks for the convenience of farmers availing themselves of crop loans from banks. This would help banks directly access land records.

Corporation Bank and KVG Bank had already implemented the scheme. All other banks had been asked to do it within a month, he said.

To prevent rush at the taluk offices, people should also approach Nemmadi Kendras to obtain record of rights, tenancy and crops (RTC), which are also available on the website.

A proposal had also been sent to issue RTCs at Hubli-DharwadOne centres. Village accountants had been given Tablets to update the crop details every season, Mr. Jain added.

Home Guards to manage traffic in Hubli, Dharwad

With a view to overcome shortage of traffic police and ensure a better traffic management in the twin cities, Hubli-Dharwad police commissionerate has hit upon the idea to rope in the services of Home Guards.

With the existing number of traffic cops, it is increasingly becoming difficult to manage vehicular movement in the twin cities. At present, there are three traffic police stations in Hubli and one in Dharwad. The officials and other staff include one ACP, four Inspectors, six sub-inspectors,12 ASIs, 61 head constables and 168 constables.

Lying vacant are the posts of two sub-inspectors, four ASIs, 11 head constables and 48 traffic police constables. Speaking to TOI, K Ramchandra Rao, Hubli-Dharwad police commissioner, said, "We have planned to redress the traffic problem by roping in the services of home guards. Till the fulfillment of all vacant posts of traffic police in the twin cities, we will put home guards on traffic duty. We have already sent proposal to the government seeking its permission in this respect. We have also trained nearly 150 home guards on traffic rules and how to regulate the traffic. We will put them on traffic duty in the twin cities once we get the approval", he added.

Satish Patil, commandant, Dharwad district home guards told TOI, "We are ready to depute our home guards for traffic duty so that it can ease the burden of the police department in handling traffic."

More than 1,000 home guards are already working as traffic police in Bangalore city.

The government issued special order on hiring home guards to put them on traffic duty.

Police swing to action to make security arrangements around Jagadish Shettar's residence


HUBLI: As minister Jagadish Shettar is set to become the new chief minister of Karnataka, police department swung into to action on Friday to make security arrangements in and around the residence of Shettar at Badaminagar of Keshwapur in Hubli.

Top police officers of the city held a indoor meeting and chalked out Bandobast scheme which is usually prepared for the CM's security, said sources from police department.

Keshwapur is situated within city limits which just 3 km away from KC circle heart of the city and there is always heavy traffic while this place is always congested. If Shettar become CM, then it will be tough for us to handle the heavy traffic movement here and ensure the safety of visitors including VIPs. So, it has become challenge for us to make proper security arrangements in such congested area, said police officer.

Speaking to TOI, ACP A R Badigeri, who is monitoring the security arrangements, said, there will be regular flow of visitors including common man, VIPs, officers, ministers, party workers and politicians to meet the CM. Keeping in mind the rush of visitors in days to come here, we have chalked out some action plan.

As first phase, we have started the work of putting up barricades in all the roads leading to the house of minister Shettar in Keshwapur and Badaminagar. It will be completed today. We are also planning to depute security personnel here for the CM's security from Saturday onwards.

In the third phase, we can also plan to regulate the traffic movement in the part of Keshwapur to avoid any traffic snarls in this part in future. We are now designing the map on which way the visitors, VIPs, ministers, politicians should be allowed use to meet the CM, he added.

"We have also given thrust on providing sufficient parking place for the vehicles of visitors who will come here to meet the CM. We will complete all our arrangements including traffic, security and other arrangements which are must for CM's security within one or two days", he added.

HUBLI/MANGALORE: With rural development minister Jagadish Shettar set to become the new chief minister of Karnataka, his house in Badaminagar of Keshwapur in Hubli has overnight become a VIP area, with police setting up barricades and deploying additional forces.

Top police officers held a meeting on Friday to chalk out a bandobast plan usually prepared for the CM's security. Keshwapur, located just 3km from KC Circle, the heart of the city, is a congested place and clogged with traffic. "If Shettar becomes CM, it will be tough for us to handle the heavy traffic here and ensure the safety of visitors, especially VIPs. It's a challenge to make security arrangements in such a congested area," a police officer said.

ACP AR Badigeri, who is monitoring the security arrangements, told TOI that this new distinction for the area would mean a regular flow of visitors, including the common man. "We have started putting up barricades on all roads leading to Shettar's house in Keshwapur and Badaminagar. We are also planning to depute security personnel for the CM's security from Saturday,'' he added.

EXPECTATIONS SINK

In contrast to this build-up and bonhomie, a pall of gloom hangs over Sullia. While BJP party workers are keeping mum, perhaps saddened by the state of affairs, the CM is getting support and sympathy from unexpected quarters - the Congress and JD(S).

Peeved at the developments, district president of the JD(S) Sullia unit MB Sadashiva said: "It's very unfortunate that Gowda is being made to step down without any valid reason. The infighting in the BJP has left people here disgusted. We expected all-round development of Sullia and also the district during his term.''

Sadashiva said the CM, perhaps knowing his predicament, should have expedited development work in the taluk and district. "That was his mistake. How will people remember his term as CM? Even his own party workers will question him about his achievements during his tenure," he noted.

Sullia Congress block president Venkappa Gowda said: "We expected a lot of development. He cannot say that internal politics affected him. He should have managed some work. Look at what former CM Yeddyurappa did for his district. This was the last chance the district could have seen some development and we have lost a great opportunity.''

Shettar will be K’taka CM by July 16 House session

Karnataka will have a new chief minister in Hubli’s native son Jagadish Shettar, expected to be sworn in before the Assembly convenes for its Monsoon Session on July 16.

Opposition from the lone naysayer, BJP patriarch L.K. Advani, crumbled in the face of an internal intelligence report that BJP national president Nitin Gadkari gave him at a one-on-one meeting on Thursday, which said the saffron party would lose its southern bastion if it went to the polls with anyone but a Lingayat community leader.
Mr Advani’s reservations over naming Mr Shettar chief minister and dropping incumbent chief minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda stemmed from being seen as succumbing to the blackmail tactics of former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, who persuaded Mr Shettar and eight other ministers to resign from the Gowda Cabinet last week, precipitating the crisis.
Mr Advani’s anger at developments in the Karnataka BJP stalled plans to replace Mr Gowda, seen as Mr Clean but unable to lead the party to victory in the polls.
The move backed by virtually everyone but Mr Advani, saw party president Nitin Gadkari call on Mr Advani on Thursday evening to discuss the crisis. Senior leader Arun Jaitley joined Mr Gadkari in trying to convince Mr Advani on this matter.

ಈ ಮಧ್ಯೆ, ಹಾಲಿ ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿ ಸದಾನಂದ ಗೌಡರು ದೆಹಲಿ ವಿಮಾನ ಹತ್ತಿದ್ದು ಇಂದು ಸಂಜೆ 6 ಗಂಟೆಗೆ ಪಕ್ಷದ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ನಿತಿನ್ ಗಡ್ಕರಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅಡ್ವಾಣಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿಯಾಗಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಬಳಿಕ ತಮ್ಮ ರಾಜೀನಾಮೆ ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಅವರು ತಿಳಿಸಿದರು.

Will it help? I know one bad thing is that the population would be divided and JNNURM or many things related to this would be so.

Naveen, now there is proposal for making Hubli Urban and Dharwad urban as two separate talluks for good administrative works, if JNNRUM is based on the population of 10 lakh limit, then this will be set-back to Hubli-Dharwad. First we should get the JNNRUM later think about separate talluks. Making Hubli as separate District is not viable and realistic, becuase Dharwad is already divided into 3 smaller districts (Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri).

Who is Jagadish Shettar?

New Delhi: Jagadish Shettar could have become the Chief Minister of Karnataka in August 2011 when BS Yeddyurappa was forced to resign over corruption charges. But Sadananda Gowda beat him to the hot seat, backed by Mr Yeddyurappa. Ironically, in 2012 it is Mr Yeddyurappa who has pushed to have Mr Shettar, a fellow Lingayat, appointed Chief Minister.

Clearly, "Jagadish Shettar" is the correct answer to the question - "so who really won in the BJP's elaborate rebellion drama?" Mr Yeddyurappa fell out with his protege and successor Sadananda Gowda and Mr Shettar was available - the right man at the right time and, crucially, from the right community. The 57-year-old lawyer's biggest advantage is that he belongs to the powerful Lingayat community. His biggest disadvantage, that he will be seen as a BS Yeddyurappa rubber stamp on policy decisions at a time that the latter faces several corruption allegations and a CBI investigation in the illegal mining scam.

Born on December 17, 1955 in Kerur village in north Karnataka's Bagalkot district, Mr Shettar's earliest political influences were his father, Shivappa Shivamurthappa Shettar and his uncle Sadashiv Shettar - both leaders of the Jan Sangh. His father SS Shettar was elected to the Hubli-Dharwad City Corporation five times in a row. He also served as Mayor for one term. Jagadish's uncle Sadashiv Shettar was MLA from the Hubli constituency in the year 1967 - the first to be elected on a Jan Sangh ticket to the Karnataka Assembly.

After graduating with commerce from the JG College in Hubli, Jagadish Shettar studied law and began practising as a lawyer at the Hubli Bar. He married Shilpa in 1984 and the couple have two sons - Prashant and Sankalp.

Mr Shettar began his public life as an active member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (BJP's student wing) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). In 1994, he was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the first time, from the Hubli Rural constituency with a margin of 16,000 votes. Since then, there was no looking back. He has been elected to the Assembly four consecutive times, increasing the margin of victory with every election. He won the 2008 elections with a margin of 26,000 votes.

In 1999, when Union External Affairs Minister SM Krishna was the Chief Minister of the state, Mr Shettar was the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly. In 2005, he was elected the state president of the BJP in Karnataka. A year later, he was promoted to the cabinet as Revenue Minister. Two years later, he was elected as the Speaker of Karnataka Vidhan Soudha, the first BJP leader to hold the post in a southern state. Since 2009, he served as the Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj.

At a time when the state is reeling under severe drought, the worst affected North Karnataka region would hope that a Chief Minister from that very area - who has held the Rural Development portfolio - could make some tangible difference.

Mood upbeat in Hubli after Shettar declared chief minister

HUBLI: It's dream come true for the people of Hubli city who are waiting for Jagadish Shettar to become CM since many years.

After the resignation of CM Sadananda Gowda giving clear indication of Jagadish Shettar becoming CM, the people hit the streets to celebrate the moment with upbeat mood.

It was a long cherished dream of the people of Hubli to see Shettar in CM's Gaddi. When BJP came to power for the first time in south India registering a thumping victory in 2008- assembly election, many thought Shettar could get either home ministry or deputy CM chair.

But, when Shettar was denied ministerial berth, it upset his followers and city people who went on violent protest by setting a few buses on fire to vent their ire for denying ministerial berth to Shettar. But, in subsequent political changes, Shettar became Speaker and later he was made RDPR minister. People remained upset every time when Shettar missed an opportunity to become CM but now people are jubilant a lot after Shettar declared as CM by high command.

People even sought divine intervention by performing homa praying almighty to clear hurdles on the way of Shettar to become CM. Their dream became reality on Sunday with party high command giving hints that Shettar becoming CM.

As soon as it was clear that Shettar will be next CM after Sadananda Gowada's resignation, people in upbeat mood hit the streets to celebrate the moment. People including BJP activists observed a˜Vijyotsavaa at Durgadbail and burst crackers and distributed sweets. Well wishers, followers and people began to celebrate on the streets by distributing sweets. Festivity mood prevailed in the city while all roads leading to Shettaras residence stood witness to the celebration by jubilant supporters.

Shettar''s residence in Keshwapur is a center of attraction for all who are now waiting to receive Shettar.

Shankrappa Chabbi, President, Hubli-Dharwad East Constituency said, Shettar should have become CM a long back but now he is made CM now. It will largely help for the overall development of whole north-karantak. It''s victory of the people of this region, he added.

Mahesh Sheth, Somu Sunagar and other people said, Shettar had contributed a lot for the BJPas growth in the region and because of his hard work, BJP won most seats. Shettar will deliver goods and live upto the expectation of people in state.

ಕ್ಯಾರಿಬ್ಯಾಗ್ : ನಿಷೇಧಿತ 40 ಮೈಕ್ರಾನ್*ಗಿಂತ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಗುಣಮಟ್ಟದ ಪ್ಲಾಸ್ಟಿಕ್ ಕ್ಯಾರಿಬ್ಯಾಗ್*ಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾರಾಟ ಮಾಡದಂತೆ ಮೇಲಿಂದ ಮೇಲೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆ ನಿರ್ಲಕ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಸ್ಥರ ಮೇಲೆ ನಿರಂತರ ದಾಳಿ ನಡೆಸಲು ತೀರ್ಮಾನಿಸಿರುವ ಆಯುಕ್ತ ಪಾಟೀಲ, ಎರಡು ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು 140 ಕೆಜಿ ನಿಷೇಧಿತ ಕ್ಯಾರಿಬ್ಯಾಗ್*ಗಳನ್ನು ವಶಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಪಾಲಿಕೆ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ಎರಡು ದಿನಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ನಗರದ ವಿವಿಧ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ದಾಳಿ ನಡೆಸಿ 80 ಕೆಜಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಗುರುವಾರ ಸ್ಟೇಶನ್ ರಸ್ತೆಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಬೇಕರಿಗಳಿಂದ 60 ಕೆಜಿ ಕ್ಯಾರಿಬ್ಯಾಗ್*ಗಳನ್ನು ವಶಕ್ಕೆ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ನಿಷೇಧಿತ ಕ್ಯಾರಿಬ್ಯಾಗ್ ಮಾರಾಟಗಾರರಿಂದ ಆರು ಸಾವಿರ ರೂ.ಗಳ ದಂಡವನ್ನೂ ವಸೂಲಿ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಬೀದಿ ದೀಪ : ಇನ್ನೂ ಅಸಮರ್ಪಕ ಬೀದಿ ದೀಪಗಳ ನಿರ್ವಹಣೆ ಅವಳಿ ನಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಳೆದ ಅನೇಕ ದಿನಗಳಿಂದ ಇರುವ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ. ಬಹುತೇಕ ಬಡಾವಣೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ರಾತ್ರಿಯಾದರೂ ಹತ್ತದ ಹಾಗೂ ಸೂರ್ಯ ನೆತ್ತಿ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಂದರೂ ಆರದ ಬೀದಿ ದೀಪಗಳು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತವೆ.
ಬೀದಿ ದೀಪಗಳ ಸಮರ್ಪಕ ನಿರ್ವಹಣೆಗೆ ಪಾಲಿಕೆ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ಹಲವಾರು ಬಾರಿ ಗುತ್ತಿಗೆದಾರರಿಗೆ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆ ನೀಡಿದ್ದರೂ ಪ್ರಯೋಜನ ಮಾತ್ರ ಶೂನ್ಯ. ಬೀದಿ ದೀಪಗಳ ನಿರ್ವಹಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಲಕ್ಷ್ಯ ತೋರುತ್ತಿರುವ ಗುತ್ತಿಗೆದಾರರಿಗೆ ನಾಲ್ಕೂವರೆ ಸಾವಿರ ರೂ. ದಂಡ ವಿಧಿಸಿರುವ ಆಯುಕ್ತರು, ಮುಂದಿನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮರ್ಪಕ ನಿರ್ವಹಣೆಗೆ ಮುಂದಾಗುವಂತೆ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆ ನೀಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

KPIT Cummins to transfer 130 employees in semiconductor business hive off



PUNE: Product engineering and IT consulting company KPIT Cummins informed the stock exchanges that it has transferred its semiconductor hardware solutions business into a new company in partnership with Hubli-based Sankalp Semiconductor Pvt. Ltd.

It has acquired 15% stake in Sankalp as a part of this transfer and its CEO Kishor Patil has joined its board. The new company, Sankalp & KPIT Semiconductor Pvt. Ltd, will be a wholly owned subsidiary of the Hubli-based company, that provides analog & mixed-signal and RF semiconductor services.

"We wanted to pool in the best talent from Sankalp and KPIT Cummins," Pankaj Sathe, Senior Vice President and Head Semiconductor Solutions Group, KPIT Cummins, told ET.

"They are strong in the hardware business with very strong operational strength; we are strong on the software side. Sankalp is a leader in semiconductor design for our focus industries including automotive, and also has strong capabilities in the consumer electronics space. With this our joint customers will get access to one of the largest semiconductor hardware design practices and superior Analog & Mixed Signal design (AMS) expertise," he said.

The transferred business had contributed $ 5.5 million (around Rs 29 crore) to the KPIT Cummins revenues in FY12. The company received Rs 7 crore from Sankalp as a part of this transfer.

Around 130 employees of KPIT Cummins, comprising the sales, marketing and delivery team, will become a part of the new company, Mr Sathe told ET. Most of these employees are based in Bangalore, where Sankalp also has it office. Henceforth, this new company will handle the hardware related projects for KPIT's customers.

The new entity will be one of the world's largest analog & mixed signal design services provider, with systems on chip design expertise. It will serve North American, European and Japanese semiconductor companies and their captive centers in India, with primary focus on automotive, consumer electronics, and computing & communications industries.

"With this strategic transaction Sankalp Semiconductor now has a large design capacity and a strong base of qualified semiconductor design specialists. This along with the extensively experienced combined leadership team will enable us to offer our customers highly scalable and best-in-class semiconductor design services", Vivek Pawar, CEO, Sankalp Semiconductor, said.

Kingfisher pilots on strike, over 30 flights cancelled

Kingfisher Airlines' schedule was disrupted on Saturday with cancellation of over 30 flights as its pilots struck work to protest non-payment of wages for almost five months.

At least 12 flights out of Delhi, 18 from Bangalore and four from Mumbai, besides several others from other cities, were cancelled.

The flights cancelled from Delhi included those to Mumbai, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Kullu, Jaipur and Shimla, while those from Bangalore included services to Chennai, Mangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hubli, Goa and Pune.

Recreation hall

Sunita Mishra, president of the Hubli division of the South Western Railway Women’s Welfare Organisation (SWRWWO), formally inaugurated the organisation’s recreation hall in Hubli recently. The recreation hall has facilities such as exercise machines and indoor games. Shoot-at-sight orders against stray pigs



HUBLI: In the wake of rising pig menace in the twin cities, the HDMC has decided to take stringent measures to check the population of stray pigs.

At a meeting held on Saturday, Hubli-Dharwad mayor Pandurang Patil said the corporation has decided to recommence shooting down of pigs if they are found on the streets.

The decision was taken on the heels of Friday's incident in which a six-year-old boy was bitten by stray pigs and was admitted to KIMS hospital. The mayor visited the injured boy in the hospital and expressed his concern over the risk stray pigs are posing to public, especially children.

The corporation will issue a shoot-at-sight order in a week to eradicate stray pigs in the city, the mayor said.

All preparations will be made to ensure safety and efficacy of the operations, he added.

The mayor told pig owners to move their animals off the streets with immediate effect.

He appealed to people not to throw garbage on the roadside and help the city corporation keep the twin cities clean to control the population of stray pigs and dogs.

Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation decides to make civic honour to Jagadish Shettar low key affair

HUBLI: In the wake of severe drought in state, Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation has decided to make the proposed civic honour to felicitate chief minister Jagadish Shettar a low key affair in his home constituencey.

Members ofBJP have incurred the wrath of other party members for their plan to organize 'civic honour' (poura sanmana) in grand and bigger way.

The very day after Jagadish Shettar becoming CM, BJP members were chalking out plans to organise civic honour function in grand manner. But, to seek the support of all party members, a special meeting was convened by the HDMC on Wednesday.

BJP members who were waiting to impress upon CM Shettar by holding this function in grand way were upset when opposition parties including Congress opposed the plan to conduct civic honour in grand way.

All the members of Congress, JD.S have appreciated the CM Shettar by describing him as undisputed leader but, they opposed to conduct civic honour function in grand manner in the light of drought.

When former mayor Purna Patil of BJP, expressed that the civic honour function should be grandeur one and be conducted in bigger way by decorating both the Hubli and Dharwad like bridegroom. BJP members also endorsed her views and demanded civic function be held in bigger way to make it memorable event.

But, the way BJP members had planned to organize civic honour in bigger way in the light of severe drought in the north-karnataka had annoyed Congress and JD.S members, who strongly objected it for holding it in in bigger way.

Yasin Haveripeth, congress member tried to convince the mayor that the civic honour function should be conducted in very simple manner since most of the district are reeling under severe drought in the region. It's not right time for us to hold functions in bigger way as it could send wrong message among the people, he said.

Other Congress members also emphasized that corporation should hold this programme in very simple manner in the wake of drought condition.

Taking the views expressed by the members into confidence, Mayor, Pandurang Patil, said corporation has decided to make civic honour function a very low key affair and it will be conducted in very simple manner in the light of prevailing drought.

Hubli bunks get CCTV cams to track criminals


Hubli: In a bid to track criminals who flee the city after committing crimes,police have decided to install CCTV cameras at all petrol pumps.On their radar are thieves,chain-snatchers,kidnappers and extortionists,among other criminals.

Police have received information from many sources that criminals go to petrol pumps to refuel their vehicles before fleeing the city.
The department issued a circular to all petrol pump owners in Hubli-Dharwad asking them to cooperate with cops by installing CCTVs.The owners have given their consent to this plan.
K Ramachandra Rao,police commissioner,told TOI that petrol pump owners have given a positive response.A police officer told TOI that some 70% criminals,on an average,tank up before fleeing the city.The CCTV footage could help police trace the criminals along with their vehicle numbers.
A petrol pump owner welcomed the move.This helps us keep an eye on suspicious persons coming to our pumps and monitor our staff too, he said.Bafna Petrol Pump manager Prakash Shetty said he has installed six CCTV cameras at a cost of Rs 75,000.We got approval from the IndianOil Corporation before installing them, he said.

HDMC demolishes seven stalls


Hubli: Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) demolished seven stalls which were earlier built on footpaths at Gopankoppa road of Sarvodaya circle of Keshwapur in Hubli on Thursday.

Speaking to TOI, Zonal Number 6 assistant commissioner, S N Ganachari, said they demolished six authorized and one unauthorized stalls which was constructed on the footpath of Sarvodaya circle of Keshwapur on Thursday morning as per the orders of Dharwad high court circuit bench.

Ganachari said the HDMC went to demolish these stalls built on footpaths in 2006. However, the stall owners brought a stay order from court. Now, Dharwad high court circuit bench has given permission to demolish these shops. With help from two JCB machines, demolition work has been completed under the direction of corporation commissioner Y S Patil and with the help of police, he added.

ನ್ಯಾಯಾಲಯದ ಆದೇಶ ಇದ್ದಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅಂಗಡಿಗಳ ಮಾಲೀಕರು ಯಾವುದೇ ಪ್ರತಿರೋಧ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ. ತೆರವು ಕಾರ*್ಯಾಚರಣೆ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಗಿ ಪೊಲೀಸ್ ಬಂದೋಬಸ್ತ್ ಒದಗಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು.

ಈ ಕುರಿತು 'ವಿಜಯ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ 'ದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ ಗಜಾನನ ಮಹಾಮಂಡಳದ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಡಿ. ಗೋವಿಂದರಾವ್, ಅಂಗಡಿಗಳನ್ನು ತೆರವುಗೊಳಿಸುವಂತೆ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಹೈಕೋರ್ಟ್ ಎರಡು ತಿಂಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆಯೇ ಮಹಾನಗರ ಪಾಲಿಕೆಗೆ ಆದೇಶ ನೀಡಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಪಾಲಿಕೆ ನ್ಯಾಯಾಲಯದ ಆದೇಶ ಉಲ್ಲಂಘಿಸಿತ್ತು. ನ್ಯಾಯಾಲಯ ಆದೇಶ ಉಲ್ಲಂಘನೆ ಕುರಿತಂತೆ ಪಾಲಿಕೆ ಆಯುಕ್ತರ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಪ್ರಕರಣ ದಾಖಲಿಸಿದ ನಂತರ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ಅಕ್ರಮ ಕಟ್ಟಡಗಳನ್ನು ತೆರವುಗೊಳಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಸಿದರು.

ವಿದ್ಯಾನಗರದ ಹಸಿರು ವಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು 15 ಕೋಟಿ ರೂ. ವೆಚ್ಚದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಕ್ರಮವಾಗಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿರುವ ಕಟ್ಟಡವನ್ನು ತೆರವುಗೊಳಿಸುವಂತೆಯೂ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಹೈಕೋರ್ಟ್ ಆದೇಶ ನೀಡಿದೆ. ಹುಬ್ಬಳ್ಳಿ-ಧಾರವಾಡ ಮುಖ್ಯ ರಸ್ತೆಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಸುಮಾರು 14 ಅಕ್ರಮ ಕಟ್ಟಡಗಳನ್ನು ತೆರವುಗೊಳಿಸುವಂತೆ ಹೈ ಕೋರ್ಟ್*ಗೆ ಅರ್ಜಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.

ಈ ಕುರಿತು ಪ್ರತಿಕ್ರಿಯೆ ನೀಡಿರುವ ಪಾಲಿಕೆ ಆಯುಕ್ತ ವೈ.ಎಸ್. ಪಾಟೀಲ, ಕೇಶ್ವಾಪೂರ ಸರ್ವೋದಯ ವೃತ್ತದಲ್ಲಿನ ಅಕ್ರಮ ಅಂಗಡಿಗಳನ್ನು ತೆರವುಗೊಳಿಸುವಂತೆ ಜು. 2ರಂದೇ ಆದೇಶ ನೀಡಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಕಾರಣಾಂತರಗಳಿಂದ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ತೆರವು ಕಾರ*್ಯಾಚರಣೆ ತಡ ಮಾಡಿದರು ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಸಿದರು.

Security to be tightened around CM Jagadish Shettar’s residence

HUBLI: With a blueprint for the security of CM Jagadish Shettar's residence in Madhura estate at Keshwapur in Hubli, ready, it won't be easy for the public to roam around the house.

The Hubli-Dharwad police commissionerate and the Public Works Department (PWD) have prepared the blueprint for tight security arrangement at the area surrounding the CM's residence in the city. A proposal was sent to the district administration in this regard soon after Shettar took charge. It is now awaiting government nod. The district administration has given an order to Hubli PWD officials to visit the spot and prepare the cost estimate. Based on the order, PWD officials have prepared the blueprint with the help of police.

According to sources, police have requested installation of four CCTVs, more street lights outside the CM's residence and in surrounding areas, an increase in the height of the compound wall of the residence and a police guard room.

However, it is said that the CM's family members are unhappy with the move to the increase the height of the compound wall of the house. The PWD officials have prepared a sketch for the same by using iron poles and zinc sheets.

C V Patil, assistant engineer, PWD, told TOI that the final sketch will be prepared on Friday. Then the project report will be sent to the deputy commissioner's office. After the approval of the district administration, work for the security measures will be taken up and finished within a week, sources said.

Delhi corporation takes a leaf out of HDMC book

HUBLI: The state government is dilly-dallying over extending round-the-clock water supply scheme to all 67 wards of Hubli-Dharwad. But still, the ambitious project caught the attention of Delhi Jal Board (DJB). The 24x7 water scheme has been implemented in eight wards of the twin cities as a pilot project.

A delegation led by water board officials of DJB on Thursday met HDMC commissioner, mayor and Hubli Water Board officers and returned with tips to implement the scheme in Delhi. To put an end to water problems, HDMC had implemented 24x7 scheme in eight wards -- four each in Hubli and Dharwad -- as a pilot project four years ago. The scheme has been implemented in wards 27, 29, 30, 32 in Hubli, while those in Dharwad include wards 8, 9, 10, 11.

HDMC is waiting for financial sanction to extend the same to all 67 wards. The news of pilot project's success reached DJB when the same was discussed at a meeting of water board officials. The Centre had convened the meeting a couple of months ago to discuss various schemes implemented across the country so they are implemented elsewhere too.

KIMS hospital to set up sewage treatment plant

HUBLI: KIMS hospital, one of the biggest government-run hospitals in north Karnataka will soon have its own state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant (STP) in its campus.

Dr. Vasanta Kamat, director, KIMS, said that new plant will start functioning by the end of the month. "Once the plant starts functioning, treated water will be used for cleaning, gardening and various other purposes except for drinking and for surgeries,'' she added.

She said the new plant has been set up according to the guidelines of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board. "The work on the new plant is on and it will be completed within a fortnight,'' she added.

Explaining the salient features of the new plant, Vasanta said the SWP plant treats waste water up to four times before it is put into reuse in the hospital.

This will ensure that there is no harm even if the water is used for bathing. Most of the medical college and hospitals have this facility but KIMS took a little time to establish one, she added.

As of now, KIMS gets 3.5 lakh litres of water from Hubli-Dharwad Muncipal Corporation and two lakh litres of water from eight bore wells every day. But soon after the completion of new buildings in December, KIMS may require about 8 lakh litres. The new treatment plant will help to meet at least half of this requirement.

"By using treated water for gardens and other technical things, we plan to cut down on the consumption by making use of the recycled water,'' said Shripad H Sawkar , estate officer for KIMS.

Sawkar said that SWP plant installation work is being taken up at a cost of Rs 79.26 lakh by Techline Green, a private company from Bangalore. "Once KIMS starts getting the recycled water, there will be no more water crisis even if the new buildings come up in the campus. KIMS is paying around Rs 2.5 lakh water bill to the water board,'' he added.

According to officials, government hospitals are supposed to treat and disinfect wastewater generated from laboratories, laundry and water used to clean and disinfect different parts of a hospital. But they directly discharge water into municipal drains.

KIMS discharges about 5 lakh litres of wastewater daily from washing, operation theatre, laboratory, floor and laundry directly into municipal drains.

The process

Sewage treatment plant consists of a combination of physical, chemical, and biological processes and operations to remove solids, organic matter and, sometimes, nutrients from wastewater. The objective of treatment is the removal of coarse solids and other large material often found in raw wastewater, and the removal of organic and inorganic solids by sedimentation, floating material by skimming.

Raleigh bicycles launched in South

Kochi, Aug. 12:

The Ludhiana-based Suncross Bikes has launched the renowned and iconic brand Raleigh bicycles in Kerala in the premium segment.

Rajesh Kalra, CEO, said here on Sunday that the parent company Naren International had entered into a licence agreement with Raleigh England to market bicycles in India.

The company launched these bicycles in the North Indian market recently.

With the launch in Kerala, Suncross has entered the South Indian market and the company is targeting a sales revenue of Rs 4-5 crore by the end of this year.

The bicycles will soon be introduced in Coimbatore followed by Chennai, Bangalore and Hubli, he said.

‘Trend-setter’

Raleigh, he said, will be a trend-setter brand as Indian customers are now demanding bicycles in the premium segment. Besides, existence of various cycling clubs across the country had also propelled the growth in bicycles.

Kalra said that the market size of bicycles in India is estimated at 13.5 million and is growing at the rate of 7-8 per cent annually.

The schemes of various State governments to distribute free bicycles to school children had also resulted in growth in bicycle usage.

Price range

Raleigh bicycles are available in the price range of Rs 6,000 to 35,000.

Currently, the products are available in 10 models which would be increased to 20 by the end of this year.

The products are imported from China, Taiwan and Europe, he said.

There are also plans to set up a manufacturing facility in Ludhiana for Raleigh Bicycles by the end of next year.

The company has earmarked an investment of $5 million, he added.

I paid property tax of my Bangalore flat online for the first time through BBMP website (last couple of years paid commission to agent to pay property tax), it is really very good and very easy, just enter through relevant form and it has all calculated the amount to be paid, just double check and pay through credit card. Thats it.

I tried the same in Karnataka One to pay property tax of the Hubli site, it is not having proper details and we have to calculate the tax amount through tax calculator and pay through it. Not so user friendly, they should implement facility like BBMP, which really help...

Twin cities get new police chief

IPS officer B A Padmanayan was appointed as the new Commissioner of Police, Hubli and Dharwad City on Saturday. Incumbent K Ramachandra Rao was posted as Inspector General of Police, Southern Range, Mysore.

In all, the State government transferred five IPS officers. Following are the other new postings:

Amar Kumar Pandey: Inspector General of Police, Central Range, Bangalore
Prashant Kumar Thakur: Inspector General of Police and Additional Commissioner of Police (Administration). Malini Krishnamoorthy: Inspector General of Police, KSRP.

Largest police transfer

In the largest transfer of police officers in a single day in its four-year-old reign, the BJP government transferred 327 police inspectors and 105 DySPs on Friday.
Those transferred have been instructed to take charge of their new positions immediately.
There are 1,100 police inspectors and 375 DySPs in the State.

Traffic curbs in Hubli today


The Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissioner has imposed traffic restrictions in view of Id-ul-Fitr on Monday. Public and private vehicles passing through Hubli have to take alternative routes.

People going to Idgah Maidan should use Station Road, Radhakrishna Galli, Shaw Bazar, Bandiwad Base Mosque, New Durgada Bail, Broadway, Lamington Road, Koppikar Road, Chitaguppi Circle, Pendar Galli, Kalammana Agasi, Mulla Oni, Dakappa Circle, Kaulpet, P.B. Road, Chatnimath Cross, MT Mill Karwar Road, Keshwapur Circle, Desai Circle, K.H. Patil Road, Railway Underpass and Ambedkar Circle, Dakappa Circle routes.

The Police Commissioner has imposed restrictions on the movement of people on the stretches of roads between Myadar Oni and Tulajabhavani Circle, Pendar Oni and Tulajabhavani Circle, Tulajabhavani Temple and Dajibanpet, Kalammana Agasi and Mahaveer Galli and Moorusavir Math (Anchatageri Oni), Gauli Galli and Janata Bazaar, Channapet Main Road and Chatnimath Cross, and Kamaripet and Jai Bharat Circle.

The Police Commissioner has said that Kittur Channamma Circle will remain closed for vehicular traffic till the completion of mass prayers. All vehicles should take alternative routes to reach Bijapur Road, Gadag Road, Bangalore Road, Karwar Road and Dharwad Road during mass prayer, according to the Police Commissioner.

Nature's wrath: Mystery of Annigeri human skulls solved

The mystery of 610 human skulls that were found a couple of years ago near Annigeri town in Navalgund taluk, Dharwad district, has been solved. According to the experts they belong to victims of a famine that had hit the region in 1790.

Even the gazetteer of the Bombay Presidency has a mention of this severe drought which is known as the ‘Daugi Bara’ (skull drought) and hit the region from 1792 to 1796.

The drought was so severe that large number of people left the area in search of food and water and most of who remained died due to starvation. Wild animals fed on these carcasses leaving the bones and skulls. It may be recalled that according to the C-14 ‘carbon dating’ test conducted by US-based Beta lab, the skulls were 180- year-old.

Department of Archeology and Museum Director R Gopal told Express that based on reports submitted by US lab and forensic experts of Department of Forensic Odontology and SDM College it has been concluded that the skulls belonged to the famine victims. SDM College’s report said that the skull belonged to men and women aged between 6 and 60 years.

The people who had returned to their native after a few years following the famine mobilised the remains there and performed mass burial of skulls in one place and other bones at the other. They placed the skull beside a water body and buried them to show respect to their loved one. “Taking into account all the research results we have come to a definite conclusion that the victims were of a famine. The death was not the result of any battle as none had taken place. No further test would be conducted. A report on this will be submitted to the government in the first week of next month,” he added.

Idgah Maidan sees record crowd on Id-ul-Fitr

Id-ul-Fitr celebrations were held at the two Idgah Maidans here on Monday. A large number of people participated in the mass prayers.

The stretch of Lamington Road was teeming with Muslims who had come to offer ‘namaz’ at the Idgah Maidan, adjacent to the Kittur Chennamma Circle.

According to the police, it was the biggest crowd seen in recent times.

Moulana Zahiruddin Kaji conducted the ‘namaz’ and delivered the Qutba (Islamic sermons) at the Idgah Maidan, while Moulana Quaza Hoyes conducted the ‘namaz’ at Old Hubli.

Appeal

Jabbar Khan Honnalli, president of the Anjuman-e-Islam of Hubli and former Minister, appealed to the community not to heed rumours being spread deliberately to create unrest in society.

The former Minister A.M. Hindasgeri and the former president of Anjuman-e-Islam Mohammad Yusuf Savanur were among the prominent Muslim leaders who participated in the mass prayers.

Others present on the occasion included Hanumanthappa Alkod, former Minister; Srinivas Mane, MLC; Rajanna Koravi, HDMC councillor; and Congress leaders F.H. Jakkappanavar, Prasad Abbaiah, Sadanand Danganavar and Mahendra Singhi.

Mr. Honnalli, Mr. Hindasgeri, Mr. Savanur and others also visited the Moorusavir Math in Hubli and met Gurusiddha Rajayogindra Swami.

ನೆಲ ಮಹಡಿಯನ್ನು ಅನಧಿಕೃತವಾಗಿ ಬಳಕೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಅಪಾರ್ಟಮೆಂಟ್ ವಾಸಿಗಳು ಕಟ್ಟಡದ ಮಾಲೀಕರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಜಗಳವಾಡುವುದು ಇತ್ತೀಚಿನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಇದರಿಂದ ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ನಿವಾಸಿಗಳು ನೆಮ್ಮದಿ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇನ್ನಾದರೂ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ನೆಲಮಹಡಿಯನ್ನು ಅನಧಿಕೃತ ಬಳಕೆಯಿಂದ ತೆರವುಗೊಳಿಸಿ, ವಾಹನಗಳ ಪಾರ್ಕಿಂಗ್*ಗೆ ಮೀಸಲಿಡಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಪದಾಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ಆಗ್ರಹಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

Hubli – Dharwad: Moving towards a garbage free city

The business hub of North Karnataka, Hubli-Dharwad, is the second-largest conurbation in Karnataka after Bangalore. Over 400 tonnes of waste is generated by the twin cities on a daily basis. In order to keep the cities clean, Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) is planning to implement integrated solid waste management (ISWM) shortly. Municipal Commissioner Y S Patil shares his views.

How does the Corporation manage collection, transportation and disposal of waste?

HDMC has submitted a proposal to the government on ISWM – which has three components – primary, secondary and tertiary. These are door – to – door collection, transportation and disposal of waste. The proposal is in the final stages of approval by the cabinet committee formed by the state government. Once the proposal is approved, scientific disposal of the waste will be implemented through bio-methanization or waste to energy conversion technologies and methods. Tenders will be floated accordingly for expression of interest, in a couple of month’s time as per ISWM.

Out of 67 wards, more than 50% of the households have already been covered through door – to – door collection. Some wards are also assigned to Poura Karmikas (Sweepers).

What are the various Solid Waste Management Programmes adopted by the Corporation?

HDMC has passed a bye-law of banning plastic carry bags of less than 40 microns. If the offence is committed for the first time, the offending shopkeeper will bear a fine of `1000 and it is `2000 for the second time. Trade licence of the shop will be cancelled and the shop will be subsequently sealed, if it is committed for the third time.

With regards to the bio-degradable waste, HDMC is planning to build a plant. The Corporation has also taken steps to reduce plastic waste. Plastic waste of less than 40 microns will be collected at one particular point and will be disposed of scientifically. It will be converted into pellets, which will be used as tar in the construction of roads.

How is the various industrial waste disposed of?

Industrial waste and Biomedical waste is handled by the Industries and Indian Medical Association in coordination with the District Administration & Karnataka State Pollution Control Board respectively whereas Bio-degradable waste will be handled once ISWM is implemented.

Have you taken up mechanized cleaning of roads and other areas?

We have already floated tenders for sweeper machines for cleaning the big roads. The machines will be supplied shortly for cleaning the major roads.

What are the eco-friendly initiatives adopted?

The project estimated at a cost of around `160 Crore is underway for the underground drainage network. A Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is being built for 40MLD of sewerage, which will get completed in the coming six to seven months. Over the past two to three years, HDMC has planted trees in coordination with the forest department and NGOs.

Hospital opens innovation centre

HUBLI: The prevention and innovation centre of Hubli's Vaatsalya Hospital was inaugurated on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters, vice president of hospital Dr Virendra Hiremath said that with the new technologies, Vaatsalya Hospital is providing quality service to the people. Breast cancer, cervical cancer, heart problems and other diseases will be treated in the hospital. The hospital has set up state-of-the art medical equipment, including testing machines, on 10,000 sq ft space in the hospital premises on Gokul Road. This will enable patients to get their reports within 10 minutes, he added.

Padmanayan takes charge as Police Commissioner

Deputy Inspector-General of Police B.A. Padmanayan, who took charge as the new Police Commissioner of Hubli-Dharwad here on Thursday, said he would continue good practices that were in place and initiate steps to maintain law and order.

He said that his priorities would be to enforce better traffic management, and crime prevention and detection. He said the helmet rule would be strictly enforced and a discussion in this regard with police officials would be held soon.

Mr. Padmanayan said that he would make efforts to work according to the expectations of the people of twin cities by taking his subordinates into confidence, and with the cooperation of residents.Collective efforts would be made to ensure law and order in the city, he said.

Introductory meeting

Subsequently, he held an introductory meeting with police officials.

Mr. Padmanayan has come in place of K. Ramchandra Rao, who has been transferred to Inspector-General of Police, Mysore Range.

Deputy Commissioner of Police S.M. Pratapan handed over charge to Mr. Padmanayan.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (CAR) N.M. Joglekar , assistant commissioners of police A.R. Badiger, G.M. Desur and N.S. Patil were present. Mr. Padmanayan served in the Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissionerate as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) and as Additional Superintendent of Police in Dharwad district.

He joined Karnataka State Police as Deputy Superintendent of Police in 1984. He served as Superintendent of Police in Bagalkot, Koppal, Raichur and Gulbarga, and as Superintendent of Police (Lokayukta) in Belgaum and Mysore.

HUBLI: The University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad in collaboration with state department of Agriculture, Horticulture will organise Krishi Mela - 2012 and International Agriculture Fair from September 22 to 25.

Nearly 10 lakh farmers, farm women, extension personnel and members of self help groups are expected to participate in the mela. During the four-day mega event demonstrations on Integrated Farming System for sustainable livelihood, exhibitions and information on the following various relevant issues will be arranged.

UAS Vice Chancellor R R Hanchinal said Agricultural Technology for Drought Management will be the theme for this year's Krishi Mela. Eminent scientists, researchers and progressive farmers would discuss at length with the farmers on the new technologies available in the market for taking up hassle-free cultivation, he added. The sprawling UAS campus will have nearly 450 stalls which will showcase various farm equipments set up.

The Krishi Mela will deal with Integrated farming system approach to empower the farm households, Dry land technologies for enhancement of agricultural productivity,

Watershed development, rainwater harvesting for groundwater recharge, Organic farming systems and biotechnology, Nutrient management, bio-fertilizers and soil health care, he said.

He said, there will be consultancy cell and Krishi community radio programmes, Farmer's innovations, farmers scientists interaction meet, and exhibition of Hi-Tech horticulture, medicinal and aromatic plants, fruits and flowers. Besides, there will be deliberation on Agro-Forestry, Bio-fuel crops and wasteland management, Integrated Pest Management, IDM, pesticide and bio-pesticides.

UAS will confer the Best Farmer and Best Farmwoman awards to farmers from each of the seven districts of North Karnatka, he added.

He said, in addition to above programmes, every day, there will be visits to experimental plots, consultancy services, agricultural exhibition, fruits and flowers Show, exhibition of farm implements and organic farming exhibition, sale of seeds, agriculture inputs, publications and value added products among others.

HUBLI: In order to combat the prevailing drought situation in Karnataka, initiating drought proofing activities and completing all irrigation projects should be the priority of the government, said Deputy Director General UIDAI (Govt of India) Ashok Dalwai.

Speaking at the workshop on 'Current Drought Scenario in Karnataka and policy Options' organized by the Department of Studies in Economics in Karnataka University here he said that droughts and other natural disasters should not be surprise the policy makers as they have become recurrent.

Rather, the available technical and research know-how should be utilized towards conservation of rain water and enhancement of moisture in the soils. Dalwai said though agriculture contributes only 14% of GDP its impact on the economy is still considerable.
Earlier, I. M. Ramesh, Regional Manager, State Bank of India, Hubli Zonal Office inaugurated the workshop and highlighted the role of banking sector in mitigating the drought impact. Papers relating to extent of current drought, household and government responses to drought, efficiency of cloud seeding and farmers responses to drought were presented by Professors S T Bagalkoti, S.M. Mundinamani, R.R. Biradar, N.S. Mugadur, Arun Patil and K.C. Basavaraju. Teachers from P.G. Departments, Colleges, representatives of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, students and general public participated in the workshop.

Oh crap! Other cities are watching

Tier-II cities of the state are anxiously watching the developments in Bangalore about garbage disposal as they believe that what happens here will set the precedent for them.

Civic bodies of cities like Mangalore, Mysore, Hubli-Dharwad, Gulbarga and Belgaum are keeping a close track on the proceedings in Bangalore. Mangalore mayor Gulzar Banu said Mangalore city has been witnessing opposition to dumping garbage at Vamanjoor (Mangalore’s Mavallipura). She said about 240 families live around Vamanjoor landfill, besides a school run by a public trust. She said Mangalore City Corporation had started a project to treat solid waste at the dumpyard, but the amount of garbage it has been receiving is far beyond the machine’s capacity; there is no option but to dump the extra garbage.

Mysore mayor MC Rajeshwari said that in all the nine zones of Mysore city, the civic body has earmarked space for solid-waste management unit, but the people living around these areas have been opposing these units. Residents of two areas have sent official notices to Mysore City Corporation, expressing their opposition to the proposal of setting up waste-processing units there. She said the city corporation was in a fix now over what to do with the garbage. Mysore city generates 240 tonnes of garbage every day.

Even Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation is facing the same problem. The civic body had identified two places—Karwar Road for Dharwad and Shivalli for Hubli—for waste disposal. In both places, people have started petitioning the corporation against dumping garbage there. Shivanand Mattannavar, chairperson of standing committee on public health of Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, said Hubli and Dharwad generate 400 tonnes of solid waste every day. Of it, 250 tonne goes to the Karwar Road dumping yard and they are planning to send the rest to Shivally, about 15 kilometres from Hubli. He said the corporation has been facing stiff resistance from Shivally Gram Panchayat and the residents of Karwar Road for dumping garbage in their locality.

Former judge of Karnataka high court, Justice (Retd) MF Saldanha disapproved of the very concept of having landfills to dump garbage. “It is inhuman to make people live in that area amid stench and disease,” he told DNA, adding that this is the main issue with the Mavallipura landfill.

“If the state government continues to violate basic human rights, situation like Mavallipura will come up everywhere in the state. If a city like Bangalore dumps its garbage at Mavallipura and Mangalore at Vamanjoor, it will be nothing else but an act of bullying the smaller towns by big cities,” he said.

Ganesha fest was their target

BANGALORE: During their interrogation , the 11 terror accused are said to have informed police they wanted to carry out blasts during the Ganesha festival in Hubli. For this, they stole a car and two motorcycles in Bangalore.
"They wanted to plant bombs mainly in Durgadbail, around 2km from the Hubli main bus stand. Lakhs of devotees gather there during the Ganesha festival. The crowd swells during immersion ," highly placed police sources said.
The accused wanted to fix bombs to the stolen vehicles and create havoc on September 19, sources said.
According to the sources, ShoaibAhmed Mirza, an expert bomb-maker , was to provide the explosives. He is a final-year MCA student of Al-Ameen College."We suspect Shoaib met top HuJI operative Shahid Bilal in Dubai around 2005.
He stayed with Bilal for almost a year and trained in terror activities."

RTI Benches in 2 dists proposed

Right to Information Benches are likely to be set up in Dharwad and Gulbarga soon.

RTI Commissioner Shekar Sajjannar told mediapersons here on Friday that the State RTI Commission has submitted a proposal to the State government to set up the Benches in the two districts in order to ensure speedy disposal of appeals and complaints. The RTI activists at present have to travel to Bangalore to file complaints and the existing RTI centre in Bangalore is overburdened.

The proposed Benches would clear the pending cases at the earliest. Each Bench will cover four districts, he added.

The State RTI Commission has also proposed to the State government to include lessons on the RTI from high school to postgraduate levels to create awareness among students, he said. The educationists and teaching fraternity should support the proposed initiative, Sajjannar added.

The following tri-weekly special trains will be running between Chennai Central and Hubli via Yeswantpur (Bangalore) to clear the extra rush of passengers.
According to a press release, T No 07314 Hubli – Chennai Central Special will leave Hubli at 20.20 hrs o*n Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays from September 2 to November 30 and arrive at Chennai Central at 11.55 hrs the next day. T No 07313 Chennai Central – Hubli Special will leave Chennai Central at 14.10 hrs o*n Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays from September 3 to December 1 and arrive at Hubli at 06.35 hrs the next day.
The composition of the trains will be 2 AC 3-tier, 6 Sleeper Class, 6 General Second Class and two luggage-cum-brake van coaches.
The trains will stop at Haveri, Ranibennur, Harihar, Davangere, Birur, Arsikere, Tiptur, Tumkur, Yesvantpur (Bangalore), Banaswadi, Krishnarajapuram, Bangarapet, Jolarpettai, Katpadi and Arakkonam. Advance reservations for the above trains commenced September 1, the release added.

Passport Seva Kendras launch walk-in appointments

The Passport Seva Kendras in Bangalore, Mangalore and Hubli have started 'walk-in'appointments from September 10, from 9.30am to 11am, announced KJ Srinivasa, regional passport officer, Bangalore.
Central or state government servants, their spouses and dependant minors who have a No Objection Certificate or identity certificates can apply in this 'walk-in'. Applicants who need a change of emigration check status - from 'emigration check required' to 'emigration check not required' - should carry relevant documents.

Applicants, whose applications have been rejected due to lack of necessary documents, will be given an opportunity to resubmit their documents at PSKs on the 'walk-in' basis.
However, the last category of applicants have to get an endorsement from respective heads of PSKs before leaving the seva kendras to avail this facility.

Tread with caution here

Dajiban Peth is located in the heart of Hubli and it is one of the busiest places of the city.

Thousands of people use the main road of Dajiban Peth to commute to their work place and also for shopping.

However, footpaths on this road are severely damaged, posing risk to life and limb of commuters.
Since the footpaths are in bad shape, people are forced to walkon the main road, dodging vehicles. This indeed is a dangerous proposition, especially for children and seniorcitizens.

People using the main road is leading to traffic snarls on the main road. Footpath needs to be repaired immediately to ease congestion on the main road.
Speaking to TOI, Eknath Jogi, who had come for shopping to Dajiban Peth said people are forced to walk on the busy main road in the absence of proper footpaths. It is risky to walk on this road where vehicles often move with great speed.
The pavers laid on the footpaths have been badly damaged. One has to walk with a great care to avoid these shaky slabs. If any pedestrian overlooks the broken pavers, he will straight away fall into the ditch.:|

The problem aggravates because the roads in Dajiban Peth are very narrow and busy. However, the damaged pavers have not been replaced for months by the city corporation.
Vinita, a customer who had come to Dajiban Peth for buying vegetables said proper footpaths should be laid in the area. The corporation authorities should also take action on shop owners who have encroached upon footpaths and kept their goods.

Corporator's Speak

Speaking to TOI, area corporaterD K Chavan said that the previous work done on the footpaths at Dajiban Peth was not good. The corporation will renovate the footpath at an estimated cost of Rs 2.5 lakh. The renovation works will begin soon and measurements will be take n. Since the pavers get damaged within a few years, they will be removed and concrete slabs will be laid which are more durable, he said.

Thelatter half involves a live hear-to-heart with Shivji himself in form of an interview chat.
The interview is supported by anaudi-visual documentary on the life of Shivji, with the stories of his musical journey narrated by the likes of Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Yash Chopra and others.

Weavers will stage dharna on Friday

HUBLI: Akhila Karnataka Kaimagga Nekar Sangh of Hubli will stage a dharna in front of chief minister Jagadish Shettar's residence in Hubli on Friday.

Handloom weavers are facing various problems for decades but no government is considering their problems seriously, said N J Malavade, vice-president, Akhila Karnataka Kaimagga Nekar Sangh, in a press release. Their main demands include waiving the loans of weavers and providing houses and jobs to them Government should fix the wages to weavers according to market price hike and an enquiry should be conducted into the scams of the handloom board, the release said.

Hubli Ka Raja to be the tallest Ganesha idol in state

The commercial city, which is also famous for grandeur of Ganesha festival, is all set to install ‘Hubli Ka Raja,’ a 23-foot Ganesha idol believed to be tallest in the state, for this years’ festival.
‘Hubli Ka Raja’ resembles Lalbagh Ganesha of Mumbai — sitting in style on throne and blessing devotees.
With just over a week left to greet Ganesha in households, members of the Dajiban Peth Gajananotsava Samiti are eager to install the ‘tallest’ Ganesha idol.
Artists from a tiny village called Rendal near Ichalakaranji in the neighbouring Maharashtra have been making the idol for two months, adopting traditional methods.
The artistes use grass, limestone and plaster of paris among other things to make the idol.
The family of Ganapatrao Kumbar which is into the profession of making idols is spread across Hubli, Belgaum, Ichalakaranji, Chikkodi, Pune, Kolhapur and Karad in the region.
“The team makes as many as 25 idols every year. ‘Hubli Ka Raja’ is the tallest among all of them,” says Milind Kumbar, an artist, who has been making Ganesha idols for years.
The Dajiban Peth Gajananotsava Samiti, which has been celebrating the Ganesha festival for 37 years, has been installing the tallest Ganesha idols of the city since 2008. “The height of the Ganesha installed by the Samiti last year was 21 feet. However, in order to avoid problems during immersion, the height is restricted to 23 feet.This time around `3.50 lakh is being spent for making the giant idol.
The number of visitors is increasing every year, says Samiti’s president Shyam Pawar. People offer cash and jewellery during darshan. Silver jewellery collected so far weighs around 20 kg, say Samiti members

ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ನಾಯಿ ಹಿಡಿಯುವ `ತಜ್ಞರು` ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಈಶಾನ್ಯ ರಾಜ್ಯಗಳ ಮತ್ತು ನೇಪಾಳ ಮೂಲದವರು. ಅಸ್ಸಾಂ ಗಲಭೆಯ ನಂತರ ಉಂಟಾದ ಗೊಂದಲದ ವಾತಾವರಣದ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಇವರಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕರು ತಮ್ಮ ಊರುಗಳಿಗೆ ಮರಳಿದ್ದರು. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ನಾಯಿ ಹಿಡಿಯುವ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆಗೆ ತೊಂದರೆಯಾಗಿತ್ತು.

ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಈಗ ತಿಳಿಯಾಗಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಅವರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಈಗ ವಾಪಸ್ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಇನ್ನು ಒಂದೆರಡು ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ನಾಯಿಗಳನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿಯುವ ಕಾರ್ಯ ವೇಗ ಪಡೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಲಿದೆ.

`ನಾಯಿಗಳನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು ಸಂತಾನಶಕ್ತಿ ಹರಣ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ನೀಡುವುದು ನಿರಂತರವಾದ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆ. ಈ ಬಾರಿ ಇದರ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯನ್ನು ಸ್ವಯಂಸೇವಾ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯೊಂದಕ್ಕೆ ನೀಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈಶಾನ್ಯ ರಾಜ್ಯದವರ ವಲಸೆಯಿಂದಾಗಿ ಕೆಲವು ದಿನ ಈ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹಿನ್ನೆಡೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದು ಅವರನ್ನು ವಾಪಸ್ ಕರೆಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯವರು ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾ ಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ` ಎಂದು ಪಾಲಿಕೆ ಆರೋಗ್ಯಾಧಿಕಾರಿ ಡಾ. ಪಿ.ಎನ್. ಬಿರಾದಾರ `ಪ್ರಜಾವಾಣಿ`ಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸಿದರು.

ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ 30ರಿಂದ 40 ನಾಯಿಗಳನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು ಸಂತಾನಶಕ್ತಿ ಹರಣ ಮಾಡುವ ಒಪ್ಪಂದವನ್ನು ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ ಪಾಲಿಕೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡಿದೆ. `ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯರು, ಅರೆ ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಒಟ್ಟು 14 ಮಂದಿ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ ಇದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇವರ ಪೈಕಿ ಎಂಟು ಮಂದಿ ನಾಯಿ ಹಿಡಿಯುವವರು ಇದ್ದು ಇಬ್ಬರು ಸಹಾಯಕರು ಇದ್ದಾರೆ.

ನಾಯಿ ಹಿಡಿಯುವವರ ಪೈಕಿ ಸುಮಾರು ಆರು ಮಂದಿ ಊರಿಗೆ ಮರಳಿದ್ದರು. ಈ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯರೊಬ್ಬರು ಹಾಗೂ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಒಬ್ಬರನ್ನು ತಾತ್ಕಾಲಿಕವಾಗಿ ನೇಮಕ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಸುಮಾರು 20ರಷ್ಟು ನಾಯಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿನಿತ್ಯ ಹಿಡಿಯಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು` ಎಂದು ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯ ಯೋಜನಾ ಸಂಯೋಜಕ ಅನಿಲ್*ಕುಮಾರ್ ಹೇಳಿದರು.

`ನಾಯಿ ಹಿಡಿಯುವ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆ ಆರಂಭವಾಗಿ ಕೆಲವೇ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಊರಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಯೋಜನೆಯನ್ನು ಪೂರ್ಣ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾರಿ ಮಾಡಲು ವಿಳಂಬವಾಗಿದೆ. ಮಂಗಳವಾರದ ವರೆಗೆ ಸುಮಾರು 400 ನಾಯಿಗಳನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು ಶಸ್ತ್ರಕ್ರಿಯಗೆ ಒಳಪಡಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಊರಿಗೆ ಹೋದವರು ಈಗ ವಾಪಸ್ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದು ಒಂದೆರಡು ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಹಾಜರಾಗಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ` ಎಂದು ಅವರು ತಿಳಿಸಿದರು.

`ಕೊಳೆಗೇರಿ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳು, ರೈಲು ನಿಲ್ದಾಣ, ಬಸ್ ನಿಲ್ದಾಣ ಮುಂತಾದ ಕಡೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಈಗ ಕಾರ್ಯಾಚರಣೆಗೆ ಒತ್ತು ನೀಡಲಾಗಿದ್ದು, ನಂತರ ಉಳಿದ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಿಗೆ ಕಾರ್ಯಾಚರಣೆಯನ್ನು ವಿಸ್ತರಿಸಲಾಗುವುದು.
ನಾಯಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ಹಾನಿಯಾಗದಂತೆ ಸಂತಾನಶಕ್ತಿ ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ಮಾಡುವ ವಿಧಾನವನ್ನು ಇದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಬಳಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ.

ಈ ಹಿಂದೆ ನಾಯಿಗಳನ್ನು ಐದು ದಿನಗಳವರೆಗೆ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಚಿಕಿತ್ಸಾ ಕೇಂದ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಈಗ ಒಂದೇ ದಿನದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಪಸ್ ಬಿಡಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಸುಮಾರು ಎರಡು ಸಾವಿರ ನಾಯಿಗಳನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿಯುವ ಗುರಿ ಇದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿ ನಾಯಿಯ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಗೆ ಪಾಲಿಕೆ 485 ರೂಪಾಯಿ ಭರಿಸಬೇಕಾಗಿದೆ` ಎಂದು ಅವರು ಹೇಳಿದರು.

ಹೌದು, ಹಳೇಹುಬ್ಬಳ್ಳಿಯ ಮ್ಯಾದಾರ ಓಣಿ ನ್ಯೂ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಸ್ಕೂಲ್ ಬಳಿ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪನೆಗೆ 13ಅಡಿ ಎತ್ತರದ ಬಿದಿರು ಗಣೇಶ ಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿದ್ದಾನೆ. 2,500 ಬಿದಿರು ಬಳಸಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದ ಗಣೇಶನ ಈ ಕಲಾಕೃತಿ ಮನ ಮೋಹಕವಾಗಿದೆ. ಕಲಾವಿದನ ಕೈ ಚಳಕ ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ಮೆಚ್ಚುವಂತಿದೆ. ಬೆಳಗಾವಿಯ ಕಲಾವಿದ ಮಾರುತಿ ಮೇದಾರ ಜತೆಗೆ 8 ಜನ ಕಲಾವಿದರು ಹುಬ್ಬಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ವಾಸ್ತವ್ಯ ಹೂಡಿ ಸತತ 30ದಿನಗಳ ಪರಿಶ್ರಮದಿಂದ ಸಿದ್ಧಗೊಳಿಸಿದ ಗಣಪನ ಮೂರ್ತಿ ಹುಬ್ಬಳ್ಳಿಯ ಗಣೇಶೋತ್ಸವಕ್ಕೆ ಕಳೆ ಕಟ್ಟುವಂತಿದೆ.

ವೇದಿಕೆಗೂ ಬಿದಿರಿನ ಅಲಂಕಾರ

ವಾಣಿಜ್ಯ ನಗರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪನೆಗೊಳ್ಳುವ 500ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಗಣೇಶ ಮೂರ್ತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಬೆಳ್ಳಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಪರಿಸರ ಸ್ನೇಹಿ ಗಣೇಶ ಮೂರ್ತಿಗಳ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ವರ್ಷ ಬಿದಿರು ಗಣಪ ಸೇರ್ಪಡೆಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಯಾರಾದ ಗಣಪನ ದರ್ಶನಕ್ಕೆ ಜನ ಕಾತುರರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

Caught at the crossroads

HUBLI: Crossing Sarvodaya Circle in Keshwapur is a challenge these days. With Jagadish Shettar becomg CM, traffic at this circle has increased manifold with the constant movement of VIP and government vehicles. The ones to bear the brunt is The Aam Aadmi.

Sarvodaya Circle has four roads adjoining it. Station Road, Navalgund Road, Club Road, Keshwapur Roads join Sarvodaya Circle.

There are three schools and colleges in the surrounding areas. Crossing this road in the morning and evening is an effort for schoolchildren, pedestrians and office-goers. "It's near impossible to cross the road properly," says Vijayanand Shirekar, resident of Paraswadi in Keshwapur.

Every day two traffic cops are deputed to streamline traffic. The circle has no zebra crossing or footpath for pedestrians. On one side of the circle, Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation has placed a garbage container which hampers pedestrian movement.
Shivaprasad Lakamanhalli, secretary, Indian Concrete Institute, Dharwad district, says that the absence of a free left at Sarvodaya Circle is what leads to traffic snarls at this junction."Authorities should consider it and if possible build a foot over bridge or subway at this circle. As this leads to a National Highway, authorities should seriously streamline traffic here,"he added. "We are working towards a permanent solution," said Shrinath Joshi, DCP, Crime and Traffic, Hubli.

HUBLI: This Ganesh Chaturthi, Hubli is all set to welcome a 25-ft Ganesha, the tallest ever idol of the Elephant God to adorn the streets of the city till date.

Popularly known as Hubli ka Raja(termed on the lines of Mumbai ka Raja - the Lalbagh Ganesha in Mumbai), the Dajibanpet Ganesha, who was 21-ft tall last year, has assumed a record height of 25-ft this year, weighing 150kg.

People from far-off places throng to Hubli to see beautiful Ganesha idols in different postures based on different themes and Dajibanpet Ganesha is the biggest crowd puller.

Artistes from Renadal village of Ichalkaranji of Maharastra are busy since the last three weeks preparing this year's Hubli ka Raja, adopting the traditional method of using limestone, grass and POP. The tallest ever idol is in a sitting posture, extending blessings to devotees."For the first time, we are making such a huge and tall Ganesh idol to be installed in Karnataka," said artiste Ranjit Avale of Rendal village.
Shyam Pawar, president, Sarvajanik Gajanan Utsava Samiti, Dajibanpet, said, they have spent Rs 3.5 lakh for preparing the Ganesha idol and another Rs 1.5 lakh for decoration. The idol will be decorated with 20kg silver ornaments donated by the devotees, he added.

The organizers have requested HDMC authorities to make proper arrangements to immerse the tallest Ganesh idol by creating a big artificial well.
