Transport: Mysore makes a smart move

Here is one more feather in the cap of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and Mysore City.

The Union ministry of urban development has selected the corporation to run an intelligent transport system (ITS) in Mysore.

Passengers will benefit as ITS will track buses through Global Positioning System (GPS) and provide real-time information on the arrival and departure of the buses on their mobilephones.

“The project aims to make public transport a part of urban citizens’ lives. This is to establish a concept of a controlled and regulated public transport, which will be sustainable in the long term and also get rid of pollution, congestion and other ill-effects,” said Gaurav Gupta, managing director of KSRTC.

“The work will be completed by December. The process started two years ago when the World Bank chose 20 to 30 cities. We pitched for Mysore for the project. Part of the money is coming from the World Bank and the rest will be funded by the Centre and state government,” he said.

Mysore has been selected for the Rs20 crore sustainable urban transport project (SUTP) as it is one of the fastest growing urban locations and KSRTC runs a public transport system there.

The project aims to make urban transport sustainable by implementing political, social, technical and financial modules to enhance its necessity and also ensure that its environmental impact is positive.

It is taken up by United Nations Development Programme and is aided by muti-lateral agencies or World Bank. In Asia, the project is co-ordinated by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. At stage one, 500 buses, including air-conditioned vehicles will be fitted with GPS system, and will be controlled by a central monitoring station. Some 105 employees at the Mysore KSRTC branch will be trained to operate the system that will provide real-time information on the arrival and departure of the buses.

Six terminals and 45 platforms will be fitted with digital display boards where the real-time information on arrival and departure of the buses will be displayed for commuters. Passengers will also receive text messages on their mobilephones on the real-time locations of buses. This will be done at random by taking numbers from individual telecom service providers. To begin with, KSRTC will conduct a workshop related to SUTP and training for personnel on September 21 in Mysore.

Karnataka Transport Corporation bags eWorld 2012 award for 'intelligent transport system'

BANGALORE: Yet another peacock feather added to the cap of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), now with the crown of eWorld 2012 for Best ICT enabled Urban Governance Initiative of the year. KSRTC has rolled a pilot on Intelligent Transport System in Mysore on just 500 buses, 105 bus stops and six bus terminals.

KSRTC runs the city transport in Mysore. The project will be commissioned from August 1, this year across all the fleet that operates intra-city. The ITS has vehicle tracking systems fitted in each bus and bus stop and terminal to get a real time location of a particular bus on a particular direction or destination. The pilot was tested with a few hundred contact numbers of daily commuters who would get the time on his mobile when he would get the bus at his bus stop.

This system also includes systems having Central Control Station, Passenger Information Management System, Communication Sub System, Travel Demand Management, Incident and Emergency Management System, Operational and Maintenance Specification and Fleet Management System.

The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation ( BMTC) is also likely to adopt ITS in Bangalore shortly.

Mysore : Soon, commuters will know how long to wait at a bus-stop

The Intelligent Transport System (ITS), which provides real-time information on the time of arrival of buses on intra-city routes, is expected to be ready in the next two months.

Described as a “unique project” taken up with the idea of redefining urban transport here, ITS is being implemented at a cost of Rs. 22.76 crore. It is part of the Sustainable Urban Transport Project (SUTP) and the World Bank and Union government have signed an agreement in this regard.

While the Ministry of Urban Development will give Rs. 12 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), the World Bank will provide Rs. 9 crore. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will fund the remaining amount.

The ITS has been developed adopting technologies such as global positioning system (GPS) and geographical information system. A KSRTC official, on condition of anonymity, told The Hindu that work on the system was progressing at a fast pace. “The job needs to be done meticulously as there are many aspects. Installation of electronic devices in buses, GIS mapping of routes etc. are part of it.”

CMM, an IT solutions company and a subsidiary of Tata Consultancy Services, bagged the contract for developing the system. Real-time information on the arrival of buses at a bus stop will be displayed on electronic display systems at that particular bus stop.

Details collected

The company has already collected details on the number of buses being operated on intra-city routes, bus schedules, bus terminals and stops. Under the system, the entire fleet of intra-city service buses here will be installed with GPS devices and the buses will be tracked from a control room to feed real-time data on the arrival of buses at bus stops.

There are plans to put up electronic display systems at Inter-Modal Transit Centres (IMTCs) as well.

Access on cellphones

Information on the arrival of buses at a particular bus-stop can also be accessed on mobile phones. “We are programming the system in such a way that the time of arrival of buses can be accessed on mobile phones by entering the bus-stop code and sending an SMS to a number that will be provided once the system is implemented,” the official said.

Intelligent Transport System is expected to be ready in two months

Real-time information on arrival of buses at a bus stop will be displayed at that stophttp://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article3579550.ece

Intelligent Transport System project: Waiting for buses in Mysore will be a thing of past

Waiting for buses for long will soon be a thing of the past in Mysore city.

Public transport in Mysore is taking a giant leap with KSRTC going hi-tech by introducing Intelligent Transport System (ITS), a passenger-friendly initiative, a first in India. It will facilitate passengers to get info like arrival of buses to stops, and details of movement of buses from select bus stops by sending SMSes. The state-of-the-art system will be dedicated to bus passengers here on September 17.

The initiative is expected to address problems being faced by bus commuters like delay in arrival of buses to stops and lack of information about subsequent stops. According to the authorities, their counterparts in other cities, including Bangalore, did try-outs on this score but none could succeed.

The system will facilitate commuters with precise information of arrival and departure of buses at select bus stops on LCD screens put up across the city. This apart, the passenger can avail service of details of buses on select routes and stops on their mobile phones by sending SMSes.

KSRTC (Urban) divisional controller M N Srinivas told TOI they would be the first in India to implement the project, which will be dedicated to people of Mysore on September 17. Deputy Chief Minister and transport minister R Ashok will formally launch the project in Mysore and officials of World Bank and representatives of government and officials from other states are expected to participate in programme at Senate Hall.

To start with, they have selected 105 bus stops of total 150 plus across Mysore for the project implementation and the services will be extended to all the stops in near future.

The system will cut down waiting time of passengers at bus stops. At present passengers are clueless about arrival of buses and they tend to take private transport which is quite expensive. It will also help officers to track movement of buses like driving speed and delay in departure of buses from bus stand on real-time basis, Srinivas explained.

The project cost is estimated at RS 23 cr and it is supported World Bank, Government India and Government of Karnataka, the controller stated.

IISc Bangalore to complete project on transportation by April

By April next year, we will not only know about how the Indian transportation model stacks up against those in the BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India and China), as well as Germany and United States but will also understand how the infrastructure is likely to be by 2020.

An ambitious project, taken up by the Civil Engineering Department of Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore titled ‘Global Mobility Monitor Network (GMMN)’, funded by the Institute for Mobility Research (ifmo) in Germany, will have a global team comprising those from the participating nations. “The BRIC nations are generally recognised as fast growing economies and we will compare the transport model with those in other BRIC nations and then we will compare it with USA and Germany as they are developed nations.

The parameters we will be looking at include transport demand in the country, supply and our policy measures,” said Ashish Verma (principal investigator), assistant professor, Department of Civil Engineering and Center for Infrastructure, Sustainable Transportation and Urban Planning (CiSTUP). Everything from parking charges levied in the country will be processed by the team, according to Verma. “We will assess the cost of owning a vehicle in the country, parking charges and the cost of public transportation. The report will compare these with the rest of the nations. We will also forecast what can be expected by 2020. Everything from mobility of our national highways to the railways and roadways will be taken into account,” he said.

Set to attract international stakeholders

According to Verma, the final product, which will be ready by April, will be useful for international stakeholders who are interested in investing in any of the BRIC nations. “With the data that we collect, everyone from those involved in public transportation to consultation companies will know where they can invest moving forward. There is a lot of interest in fast growing economies like India,” he said.

The project is budgeted around one lakh euros. India will get about `14 lakh from the budget. “There has to be a lot of interaction with various stakeholders in the country including government agencies. We have narrowed down on six cities in the country in terms of geographical location and cultural context and will be using them as a sample for the rest of the country. We have reached out to various state governments for data. We will also rely on open source data available to the public,” he said.

Verma said that the team will also have meetings with various stakeholders in each city while analysing the data. The cities that will be taken into account for the project are: Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Indore, Lucknow and Guwahati. The members of the project from different countries already attended a workshop at the end of June this year where various transportation problems in those nations were discussed. “While the models may look different, they have a lot of similar issues like congestion of roads” he said.

Akash, such facilities are also a must at district bus-stands where long distance buses come and go like Bellary, Bijapur, Bangalore etc. It will be very useful there. Let's see how the initiative shapes up.

ITS to be extended to inter-city bus routes

The system reduces the waiting time for commuters at bus-stops
Buoyed over the launch of the country’s first intelligent transport system (ITS) for bus services on intra-city routes in Mysore, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is replicating the model for inter-city routes as well.

Nearly 4,000 buses, including Sarige, luxury and deluxe services operating on inter-city routes in the State, are being brought under the ITS.

The model of the Mysore ITS, ‘Mitra’, will be replicated for inter-city operations as the KSRTC management has been by and large “satisfied” with the integration of technologies to launch the ITS to make intra-city transport smart and reliable. Under the ITS, the arrival time of buses is displayed, reducing the waiting time for commuters at bus-stops.

In a chat with The Hindu , KSRTC Managing Director N. Manjunatha Prasad said the contract to launch ITS on inter-city routes had been given to CMM, an IT solutions company and subsidiary of Tata Consultancy Services, which implemented the ITS project in Mysore. For this project too, IBI Group, a multinational consulting and design firm, would be the project management consultant.

“The total cost of the ITS project for the State is around Rs. 20 crore, and it is fully funded by the KSRTC. All types of buses (numbering 4,000) in KSRTC fleet will be covered under the ITS. If the project succeeds, we will expand the system to another 4,000 buses,” he said.

The ITS for the operation of 4,000 inter-city buses will be ready in the next six months.

“I think the ITS will be beneficial in utilising our resources suitably and planning operations accordingly,” Mr. Prasad said.

Mr. Prasad said that drivers and conductors were crucial to the success of Mitra. Innovative initiatives such as the ITS, which was launched in Mysore on Saturday, could become successful if drivers, conductors, technicians joined hands and worked towards its success, he added. .

He said there were plans to offer rewards to ten drivers every month to motivate them to understand the system better and perform accordingly.

Mysore’s bus network becomes smart

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...w/17447097.cms

MYSORE: The city of Mysore has become the first in the country to have an Intelligent Transport System (ITS), which provides information on the movement of city buses on real-time basis.

The project was created by the KSRTC using JnNURM grants. KSRTC (urban) divisional controller M N Srinivas says ITS project, a passenger-friendly initiative, has helped to put Mysore on the map once again.

Over the years, city KSRTC has improved its services and adopted innovative environment-friendly initiatives by installing diesel particulate filters in buses to arrest carbon footprints. In an interview to STOI, 49-year-old Srinivas says they will continue their focus on improving the service further.

Excerpts

Why was Mysore selected for the ITS project?

Of late, the transport sector is being given importance worldwide. Even the ministry of urban development (MoUD) was serious about upgrading the public transport system.

As Mysore city was feasible for testing a new system, KSRTC took keen interest and submitted the project, which was approved by the MoUD.

Another positive aspect was Mysore was the only city in Karnataka with a separate KSRTC division. With ITS in place, we are expecting a rise in the number of passenger by 50,000 everyday. Presently, over three lakh passengers including 50,000 pass-holders are utilizing city transport service daily.

How has ITS project helped build the Mysore brand?

Mysore's brand value has further gone with the implementation of ITS project, which is India's first.

We have succeeded in reducing passengers' waiting time at select stops by giving information on the bus schedules on real-time basis, on the lines of flight service. Now Mysore is being seen as a leader in transport sector in India and abroad. Transport authorities across India and even officials of World Bank, which funded Rs 9 crore of the Rs 20-crore plus project, have appreciated our efforts. We will extend ITS facility to the entire city in next phase.

How best has KSRTC utilized Centre's JnNURM grants?

We have created the best infrastructure and improved transport system using JnNURM grants. As many as 150 new buses including 79 low-floored buses have been added to help the elderly. We are proud that KSRTC has utilized the grants fully.

What is the position of Volvo bus service?

Mysore city has sufficient hi-tech bus service.

We are running 36 Volvo buses to different destinations including Chamundi Hills, Infosys, Srirangapatna, KRS, Nanjangud and Yelwala. We are running 15 buses to Infosys, nine to Chamundi Hills and three each to Srirangapatna, Yelwala and Nanjangud and we run buses to KRS only on demand basis. There is overwhelming response to Chamundi Hills and the service is being appreciated by passengers.

Why is the Chamundi Hill bus stand work pending?

The issue was in court till now due to a land dispute where the bus stand was supposed to come up. Now, the court has given a decision in our favour and we will complete the work soon.

There was a proposal to shift city bus stand to decongest CBD...

We have been operating buses here since decades and we will continue till further orders from the government.

What are the challenges and plans of city KSRTC?

We are taking stock of our works and are studying how best we can further improve our services by linking routes/buses and running additional buses during specific times. Public can help us too.

Each and every complaint is being attended to with diligence. We have plans to operate buses to rural parts and urban areas from all the seven inter-modal transit centres in Mysore.

BMTC buses to get tech edge

Bengaluru:Travelling by BMTC buses in Bengaluru may soon be a hassle-free experience. The corporation’s entire fleet will adopt the Integrated Bus Transit (IBT) System which was implemented in Mysore last month for the first time in the country.

The BMTC has planned to call for tenders to install the IBT system in the coming days. This means the passengers at most of the bus stands will be able to get real-time information of buses, location, seating availability and a host of other information.

Once implemented, the project has the potential to increase patronage for public transport system in Bengaluru, transport planners feel.

Besides display screens at bus stops, the system also stresses on having in-vehicle display system and automated voice announcement system in all buses. The IBT system also offers services like SMS queries, commuter-friendly website and a dedicated help desk for commuters, a BMTC official said.

Each bus stop will have a television screen showing arrival time of buses and a map on which one can see the location of a bus. “All buses will be mounted with GPS software and drivers will be given head sets to communicate with the control room in case of a breakdown. The system will also help in smooth movement of buses since the roads where buses ply are monitored at the control room,” the official said.

KSRTC seeks more dedicated lanes for buses

http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/01353/06BGBUS_LANE_1353946f.jpg
‘Road width needs to be looked into before introducing them’

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has sought more dedicated lanes in the city for seamless and speedy movement of buses.

The Mysore city traffic police introduced a dedicated bus lane between the busy K.R. Circle and Hardinge Circle (nearly 1 km) on an experimental basis last week. This has encouraged the corporation to seek more such lanes.

KSRTC Divisional Controller (Urban Division) M.N. Srinivas told The Hindu that the traffic police had been requested to introduce more dedicated bus lanes at least in places where the traffic density was high so as to ease congestion, particularly during peak-traffic hours.

“It (bus lane) ensures seamless movement of buses apart from cutting travel time. Moreover, it helps us to serve the commuters better. There are dedicated lanes for buses in major cities and the one introduced in Mysore is a welcome step,” he said.

The road stretch between Hardinge Circle and Sanskrit Pathashala Circle is infamous for traffic congestions, especially near Doddakere Maidan (opposite the Mysore palace). Traffic jams are common here during peak hours. The density of heavy vehicles on this stretch has risen substantially. The poor condition of the road has added to the motorists’ woes.

“If traffic police identify places where bus lanes will be helpful, we can plan our schedules accordingly. We have already given our suggestions and requested the traffic police to consider them,” Mr. Srinivas said.

Apart from reducing road accidents, bus lanes would ensure that private vehicles too have a dedicated lane, he said.

Traffic discipline

“The traffic police should not allow other vehicles to ply on dedicated bus lanes. They have to strictly enforce the decision to improve traffic discipline among all motorists,” a source in the KSRTC said.

When asked about the KSRTC’s request for introducing more bus lanes, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vishnuvardhan told The Hindu: “We need to identify the places and study the traffic density there before taking any decision. Road width is an issue that needs to be looked into before introducing more bus lanes. Let us see how the current arrangement works for some more time before taking any further decision.”

Bus services in Mysore have gone hi-tech after the introduction of the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) or Mitra (Mysore Intelligent Transport). Mitra has been adopted at a cost of Rs. 23 crore. This gives real-time information on the arrival time of buses on intra-city routes, reducing the waiting time of commuters at bus-stops.

With a fleet of about 420 buses, the KSRTC’s Urban Division here operates over 6,000 trips a day. There is a demand from the citizens here for introducing more intra-city services.
