s.yogendra June 27th, 2012, 06:46 PM Mysore planners moot bicycle sharing system in Mysore
To promote a healthy and eco-friendly lifestyle, the district administration is planning to implement Public Bicycle-Sharing System in the Heritage City.
"The project is awaiting the approval of the authority, and the project blueprint is ready," said DC P S Vastrad. "We want to make some areas free of vehicles. Initially, the plan will be implemented in the University of Mysore campus," he said, adding that the project will be extended to other areas depending on its success there.
Further, the DC said government officials have been requested to pedal from their quarters to their offices "as it can reduce the use of government vehicles".
Public bicycle-sharing system, which is prevalent in European countries, moved to India a couple of years ago. The system enables people to obtain bicycles on rent. They can subscribe to the facility online by making monthly or annual payment. The plan will be implemented by Mysore City Corporation under Mysore City Land transport Authority (MCLTA).http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/Mysore-planners-moot-bicycle-sharing-system-in-Mysore/articleshow/14311598.cms
s.yogendra June 27th, 2012, 06:48 PM DC'S CYCLING IDEA DISCUSSED
The issue of government officials cycling their way to work for at least one day a week was the main point of discussion during the DC's Phone-in programme this morning, which is held every third Thursday of the month.
Apparently enthused by Star of Mysore's special report yesterday, the Dy. Commissioner P.S. Vastrad raised the issue citing the newspaper report.
Reiterating his emphasis on encouraging cycling among the government officials, he said that the rule will be in force from next Monday. He also directed the Heads of various departments to facilitate cycle parking space, watchmen for the cycles and other necessary facilities.
"The system of bicycle-sharing has been in practice at the Infosys campus here since years. The district administration has also urged the Mysore University to implement such a system. We have also approached the managements of colleges to follow suit in their respective campuses," said the DC, pointing out that most high school students rode bicycles to schools in the city and rural areas too.
Cycle Tracks: The DC directed the Police Commissioner and Traffic ACP to identify broad roads in city suitable for cycle tracks and demarcate with yellow paint at least 18 kms of road margins exclusively for cycles.
Priority for pedestrians: "In our country, the Police, RTO and KSRTC give priority to four-wheelers, then to two-wheelers, and then to cyclists and lastly to the pedestrians," said the DC and announced that the order of priority will be reversed henceforth.
Cautioning the KSRTC bus drivers against over-speeding and rash driving, he warned that in case a cyclist on cycle-track or a pedestrian is hit, a fine of Rs. 10 lakh will be imposed.
He, however, went on to add that it was just a warning and that he was not forcibly implementing the rules, but only intended to make the city roads safe, reduce pollution level and induce health consciousness among the citizens.

Deputy Commissioner P.S. Vastrad, who is also the executive officer of the Mysore Palace Board, inaugurated the facility. Ten cycles and 50 umbrellas are available for use after a deposit, which is refundable, is made.
Committee
Mr. Vastrad told presspersons that a committee had been set up to identify roads within a radius of 2 km in the city and provide dedicated space for cyclists.
He said the Director, Urban Development, had been invited to the city in connection with the launch of bicycle sharing system here.
Palace Board deputy director T.S. Subramanya was present.http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article3571662.ece

Non-motorised transport, such as cycling, still exists in Mysore, although it is on the wane because of the booming automobile ownership.
With an aim to recreate interest in eco-friendly non-motorised modes of transport, particularly cycling, a dedicated cycle track has been developed in Mysore, which is still considered a cyclist-friendly city.
The first cycle track has come up on Lalitha Mahal Road, which has high traffic density. Work on the 4-km long track has been completed, and will be expanded further.
Speaking to The Hindu , Mysore City Corporation Commissioner K.S. Raykar said the cycling zone or cycle track had been developed on one side of the busy road stretch, making use of the space available after having recently improved the road.
Expansion
He said the track would be expanded from Lalitha Mahal Road till Bannur Road (about 4 km). Later, the track would be developed till Vani Vilas Double Road (4 km). The total length of the track would be around 12 km, he added.
Cyclists have begun using the completed portion of the track, although its official launch is pending. The track has come up along the tall trees on the road, which has heritage buildings nearby.
“The track will be expanded wherever space is available,” Mr. Raykar said, adding that the track would be officially inaugurated shortly.
Cyclists found it difficult to commute on the busy road. With the creation of a cycling zone, a safe path had been created for them, he added.
The MCC had made an attempt to launch ‘cycle tourism' during Dasara a couple of years ago.
The corporation had planned to make cycles available to tourists on hire. It had announced that tourists could return the cycles to the hiring point closest to them after their tour, instead of the place from which they had originally hired the cycle. Representatives from the tourism industry here supported the MCC's plan, and said it would boost tourism. Like bike rentals in Goa, which is hugely popular among tourists there, particularly international tourists, sources in the industry had said that cycle rentals in Mysore “was a step in the right direction to promote bicycles and reduce, at least to some extent, air pollution.”
Renewed interest
Nearly 35 locations had been identified in Mysore, Srirangapatna and Brindavan Gardens for renting cycles. It was also planned that the renting points would be used as help desks for tourists, for guidance on tourist spots and other information, but lack of funds prevented the corporation from pursuing the project.
MCC sources said the corporation was now showing interest in pursuing the ‘cycle tourism' plan following the development of the city's first cycle track.
The cycle track will be expanded to around 12 km

s.yogendra June 28th, 2012, 05:21 AM Officials identify roads in Mysore to mark cycle tracks
The tracks will be marked on either side of the road: Deputy Commissioner
As part of the initiative to popularise cycling to work among government officers and staff, the district administration, Mysore City Corporation and Mysore Urban Development Authority and the police visited several locations here on Wednesday to identify roads to mark cycling tracks.
Mr. Vastrad recently directed officers and employees of government departments to start cycling to work on Mondays.
Deputy Commissioner P.S. Vastrad, MCC Commissioner M.R. Ravi, MUDA Commissioner C.G. Betsurmath and Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Shankare Gowda were present.
The tracks will be marked on either side of the road, Mr. Vastrad said.
The proposed tracks are on Ramswamy Circle to Railway Station (1.5 km), Irwin Road to Ayurveda Circle (650 m), Ayurveda College Circle to Highway Circle (2 km), Nelson Mandela Road to LIC junction (1.2 km), LIC junction to JSS Medical College (1.4 km).
Longest stretch
The longest stretch identified is from MUDA junction to Bogadi (4.7 km). The other tracks are: Dasappa Circle to Contour Road touching KRS Road (3.3 km), K.G. Koppal signal to Deputy Commissioner’s office via Krishnaraja Boulevard (1.8 km), Ramaswamy Circle to Ekalavya Circle via Chamaraja Double Road (500 m) and around Mysore palace (2.5 km).
Mr. Vastrad said there was a good response to the initiative on Monday.
The measure would save fuel, help bring down pollution and ensure good health. Those who could not cycle could walk to work or take public transport, Mr. Vastrad added.http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article3579174.ece
vasanthr June 28th, 2012, 09:29 AM Tracks should not be tarred road like done on Lalithmahal road. It should have barricades on entry to stop 2 wheelers and cars entering. The width on Lalithamahal Road is too much, even cars will enter if unbarricaded during choking.
If this is done in Bangalore, all the 2 wheelers will start entring it easily.

Hi vasanth,Lalithamahal road is not that wide,as show in that delhi pic. Also I am of the view that cycle tracks need to be tarred for the following reasons based on my experience at NIT trichy and IIT madras, where I rode my hercules top gear for 6 years.
- It is difficult to handle curves or in generak ride if the track gets slushy during rains.Water tends to collect in pockets if not tarred. This happened in our campus where we used to take short cut i.e. open sites slushy/uneven roads to reach our classes from hostels.
- Fine sand which mysore has in abundance, acts as a lubricant making cycles to skid while braking
-Tarring helps in draining water off the surface,it provides rigid base thereby ensuring better control over the cycle.
engineer.akash June 28th, 2012, 06:19 PM Mysore to make its roads bicycle-friendly
After becoming the first city in the country to encourage its bureaucrats to use bicycles to commute to office, Mysore will now have dedicated lanes for cyclists on some of its roads.
Eleven major roads—and a total of 20 km—will grant extra rights of way to cyclists in Mysore. A posse of officials, headed by deputy commissioner PS Vastrad, have asked traffic police and Mysore City Corporation to take up the task of marking these roads. The area reserved for cyclists will be painted in yellow.
Vastrad said this was a long-term plan. The markings on the road would indicate to other motorists to keep away from that portion of the road. Also, boards would be put up on these roads to tell people about bicycle-only lanes. He said notwithstanding the limited number of roads that have been identified for this project initially, soon the city administration would be able to cover a wider area and make it safe for cyclists.
Mysore has already started expressing its newfound love for cycling. The university campus at Manasagangotri is a case in point. Foreign students studying here have started buying bicycles. Some of the staff members who live in the university quarters have also bought bicycles and started using them.
Ramakrishnaiah, 51, is one such staff member. He said these days, cycles come with as many as 10 gears, disc brakes, and are light and safe. He said it is fun to ride the bicycles.
On Wednesday, he rode from Kamakshi Layout to Crawford Hall—a distance of five km—and now plans to do it every day.
The scene on the Amba Vilas Palace premises was even more encouraging: tourists were seen exploring the place on bicycles.
Deputy director of the Palace Board, TS Subramanya, said the board provides 10 cycles for tourists and they have to pay a nominal rent to use them. He said the number of bicycles would be increased soon. Subramanya himself has started using bicycle to come to office.
MUDA commissioner CG Betsurmath, Mysore City Corporation commissioner MR Ravi and Vastrad have also started coming to office on bicycle once a week (every Monday). They plan to make it two days a week soon.

Using bicycles, anacondas at Zoo and Mysore palace in its centenary year....
This was how the 20-member delegation from South Korea was introduced to the city on Thursday, by deputy commissioner P S Vastrad. The district administration, in association with Mysore Palace Board and Nehru Yuva Kendra, had organised the interaction programme.
Not that the visiting delegates, all youngsters, just got to know about cycling, they also had the privilege of pedalling within the precincts of Amba Vilas Palace.
Stacey Park, one of the delegates and the lone English speaking foreign guest was awe inspired to know about the city. Stacey told Deccan Herald, she would like to visit the city, especially the Palace, along with her family later.
Though she had peeked into India on net, it was for the first time she was touring India, visiting places of tourist attractions and also strategic locations.
Earlier, the deputy commissioner explained about the green concept. When a delegate wanted to know further, the officer went into its nitty-gritty. “Being the second cleanest city in the nation, Mysore produces compost in a natural way.
It is being sold as ‘Mysore Gold’. Leaves falling from trees aren’t going waste, for the city is producing compost by mulching process. Also, vegetable waste is being diverted to Pinjrapole, to feed the cattle”, the officer explained.
The district has the credit of launching nearly 15 pilot projects, including Aadhaar card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the officer added.
Chairman of Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industries (MCCI) S Sudhakar Shetty was inquisitive about their (Koreans) opinion on Indian education system.
What triggered his interest was five students from the same nation studying at Jnanasarovara International Residential School, Mysore (JIRSM), from the current academic year.
The delegates were felicitated with Mysore Peta, garland, besides T-shirts sponsored by S Sudhakar Shetty and former corporator D Nagabushan.
Prakash Vaidya, coordinator of Nehru Yuva Kendra, New Delhi, and also liaison officer for the delegation said Chamundi Hill and Infosys was also on the itinerary.
“They are in India as part of Indo- Korean exchange programme. The programme, in its seventh year, sends equal number of youth from India to Korea.
Police commissioner K L Sudheer, MCC commissioner M R Ravi, coordinator of NYK, Mysore, Prakash, deputy director of Mysore Palace Board T S Subramanya and other officers were present.

Noted your points Akash. Are they making any bicycle special lanes connecting Jaganmohan Palace, Palace and Zoo Garden? That would be more helpful for tourists. The trucks in Santhepete in front of Jaganmohan palace poses danger to cyclists and pedestrains. Also the pavements in santhepet are stinky. To prevent jamming during Dasara, they should allow only cycles and city buses around Palace area.

Hi,
I am not aware of bicycle lanes around jaganmohan palace and I think it is not feasible too. But yes,Cycle tracks are earmarked around the palace and in the palace premises.

Ofcourse,a well defined track which is sealed from the main road and footpath will not have any conflicts with either of them.
s.yogendra June 30th, 2012, 06:57 PM Pedal your way around Mysore
Despite being the country’s fastest growing tier-II city, Mysore has managed to retain much of its old charm. The bicycle was once an important mode of transport and once ruled the roads here. Even as top-end luxury cars, including the high-speed ones, vroom around the city, there are still people who ride bicycles for local commuting in spite of rising vehicular traffic and very little space left for them on the roads due to booming automobile ownership. Nevertheless, Mysore is still considered a “cyclist-friendly” city and a place where non-motorised transport, primarily cycling, can be popularised. If the district administration is showing special interest to popularise cycling and initiate a ‘bicycle sharing system’, safe commuting lanes for cyclists are a must to rope in more number of people into this “green initiative.” The roads are not so safe for cyclists in the absence of dedicated space for them.

Understanding the need for dedicated cycle tracks owing to repeated appeals by the people promoting the idea of cycling for a “greener Mysore,” the first-ever cycle track has come up on Lalitha Mahal Road, which has high vehicular traffic density. The 4-km long cycle track was completed a few months ago and the authorities propose to expand it further. But, such tracks are also needed on other roads to generate
In its resolve to recreate interest towards the eco-friendly non-motorised mode of transport – cycling – and thereby make Mysore a “model cycling city”, the district administration asked the government officers and staff to cycle to work on Mondays. This campaign for bicycle promotion evoked mixed response on the inaugural day – June 25 – with several of them riding cycles to their respective offices here. Despite the call, many still preferred to go to work in motorised two-wheelers and cars.
Nevertheless, the administration is happy that its call was taken seriously by at least some people and responded to the campaign. It hopes that others will follow suit in the coming weeks and ensure that the effort sets an example for others.
Welcome move
“The campaign has been described as a welcome move. People have noticed the effort. The officers and employees must sustain the campaign. We can keep our vehicles at home and use other modes of transport – public transport – to make a difference. If people cannot pedal cycles, they can come by bus or reach their offices by foot. This may be small effort, but the result could be noticeable if others replicate the model,” said Deputy Commissioner P.S. Vastrad.
Making use of available space upon improving the road, the Mysore City Corporation developed the cycling zone or cycle track on one side of the busy Lalitha Mahal Road. The track has good shade as it has come up along the tall trees on the road which is surrounded by heritage buildings. This stretch on Lalitha Mahal Road was identified for developing the track as cyclists had a tough time to commute on the busy road because of heavy traffic. There was a risk factor for the cyclists and accidents had also been reported. But, there is safety now for cyclists.
The then MCC Commissioner K.S. Raikar had said that the track will be expanded till Bannur Road (about 4 km) from Lalitha Mahal Road. Afterwards, the same track will be developed till Vani Vilas Double Road covering a distance of about 4 km, from the beginning of Lalitha Mahal Road stretch. The idea was to make the total length of the track around 12 km, covering more roads, for free cycle movement.
Although the official launch of the cycle track is pending, cyclists have started using the track. But the work on expanding the track has not taken off. Perhaps, the district administration’s ongoing initiative to promote cycling may accentuate the project.
Already, a committee had been set up to identify roads within a radius of 20 km in the city and provide dedicated space for cyclists. A team of officials led by Mr. Vastrad visited several locations in the city to identify roads for developing cycle tracks on the lines of the one developed on Lalitha Mahal Road. MUDA Commissioner C.G. Betsurmath, new MCC Commissioner M.R. Ravi, ACP (Traffic) Shankare Gowda and others accompanied him. The administration wants to develop tracks on either side of the road.
After discussions, the officials have proposed to develop cycle tracks at the following places: Ramswamy Circle to Railway Station (1.5 km), Irwin Road to Ayurveda College Circle (650 m), Ayurveda College Circle to Highway Circle (2 km), Nelson Mandela Road to LIC junction (1.2 km), and LIC junction to JSS Medical College (1.4 km). The proposed track between MUDA junction and Bogadi (4.7 km) is the longest. Dasappa Circle to Contour Road touching KRS Road (3.3 km), K.G. Koppal signal to Deputy Commissioner’s office en route Krishnaraja Boulevard (1.8 km), Ramaswamy Circle to Ekalavya Circle en route Chamaraja Double Road (500 m) and around Mysore Palace (2.5 km) are the other tracks.
If these tracks become a reality, more people are expected to come forward to take up cycling since the safety issues will be addressed with the setting up of dedicated tracks for cycle movement.
Welcome move
Taking a cue from the district administration, the Mysore Palace Board has introduced a system to rent cycles for tourists to go around the palace premises. “This eco-friendly way of touring the palace complex has been welcomed by the tourists,” said Palace Board Deputy Director T.S. Subramanya. Ten cycles and 50 umbrellas are available for use after a deposit, which is refundable, he said, adding that this will be an added feature of tourism promotion as there are takers for ‘cycle tourism’.
Foreign tourists like to go around on bicycles. In fact, the MCC had made an attempt in the past to launch “cycle tourism” during Dasara. There was a plan to make bicycles, including the geared, sports and recreational kinds, available for tourists on hire basis. The proposal was also welcomed by the representatives from the tourism industry here who said it will be an “added advantage” to boost tourism.
Bike rentals in Goa are hugely popular among tourists there, particularly international tourists. Therefore, cycle rentals in Mysore were proposed. It was planned to make use of the cycle renting points as help desks for tourists (for guidance on tourist spots and other information). But, the corporation did not pursue the project despite identifying about 35 locations in Mysore, Srirangapatna and Brindavan Gardens because of constraints in funding.
In the recent months, there were talks on pursuing the “cycle tourism” plan with the Centre selecting the city under a pilot project to develop bicycle culture and encourage the use of cycles among tourists. Besides Mysore, nine other Indian cities have been identified for building cycling infrastructure under the project aiming at promoting eco-friendly non-motorised transport for minimising carbon emissions.
Under this, Mysore is expected to get bicycles (in good numbers) and infrastructure such as parking lots for these bicycles. Cycling lanes will be developed in addition to installing signages for cyclists on the roads.
Mysore had been identified as one of the pilot cities for the bicycle project since it is a popular tourist destination and the use of bicycles can be promoted among tourists for visiting tourist spots located in and around the city (in about 15 to 20 km).
Panels formed
Already, the corporation had submitted its plan under the project to the transport wing of the Union Ministry of Urban Development and is awaiting approval and funding.
Four committees had been formed at the Centre to decide on the project and develop ideas for making cycling popular.
A lot of promotional activities had been done in the city to popularise Mysore as a cyclist’s city in the recent years. But, there is a sharp rise in the number of automobiles. Statistics have revealed that the number of car buyers has increased substantially. On the flip side, road space is shrinking and not much space is left to widen the roads further, thus causing traffic congestion.
Thanks to the introduction of school vans even in small cities, students have stopped using bicycles to their schools. Bicycle rental shops are also disappearing. There were times when Mysore city had several such shops. Now, automobiles have replaced bicycles on the streets. Each shop used to have at least 10 to 20 bicycles for hiring. Today, many shops have disappeared although the city has many bicycle showrooms.
“People have no time for cycling. They have become time conscious and own the latest automobiles. How can bicycle rental shops survive when the road space has been occupied by automobiles,” asks a local resident, who was going to his office on his bicycle.http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-features/tp-districtplus/article3586489.ece

s.yogendra June 30th, 2012, 09:56 PM R K Laxman had sketched a mascot for Mysore cycling campaign
Sir, kindly recall my telephonic talk with you (from Mysore) on the 5th instant about creating a mascot for 'Recycle', a movement to bring bicycles back to the road.
'Recycle' is picking up a fine momentum in Mysore, and we are now attempting to take its message to wider audiences, including people owning automobiles. As proper branding would go a long way in reinforcing any message, we wanted to have a powerful mascot for the movement and thought that a caricature would serve this purpose effectively. Also, we wanted a distinguished Mysorean and a noted friend of the common man to endorse the movement so that it attracts adequate attention from the local media and active involvement from all sections of society."
That's how Mysore-based artist K J Sachchidanand began his letter to the celebrated cartoonist, R K Laxman, as he tried to remind about his telephonic interview with him on May 5, when he had broached the issue. A bunch of activists were trying to promote cycle as a mode of transport under the brand name 'Recycle' and wanted a mascot to catch the attention of Mysoreans. As Sachchidanand, who is in his 40s, started to work on it, he thought of approaching the legendary cartoonist from Mysore, who has immortalized the city landscape in his works, and wrote a letter on May 17.
"I was apprehensive but still called him up, mustering courage. He asked me to send him the details," he said.
Laxman had conveyed to him that he is not well owing to paralytic stroke and would take time to work it out. But the artist met him some time later while on a visit to Mysore and reminded him of his letter. "He initially got angry and asked me to meet him some other time. Luckily I'd taken drawing sheets, brush and paint with me thinking that he'll oblige us. When he saw them, he sensed that we desperately want it for Mysore and sketched it on the spot," he told TOI.
Now, the activists want the sketch of the common man riding bicycle to be used for the promotion of the cycle campaign and has offered to share it with the district administration. They met DC P S Vastrad and explained him the details. "He said they can use it," the artist stated.
A senior official told TOI that the DC has asked officials to work out the details with a tag line for the campaign along with the sketch.http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/R-K-Laxman-had-sketched-a-mascot-for-Mysore-cycling-campaign/articleshow/14524531.cms

Mysore, July 1- True to the saying that 'history repeats itself,' Mysoreans who once used to see Chaddi-clad cops riding cycles on duty will soon see pant-clad Cops cycling while on beat.
This comes in the wake of the recently launched initiative of the DC who has asked all government officials to cycle to work on Mondays.
City Police Commissioner K.L. Sudheer has decided to introdu-ce cycles at city Police Stations for Cops to undertake their task of maintaining law and order.
Speaking to SoM, Sudheer said that it was essential for Policemen to be mentally and physically fit. "People should not be forced to pedal to work. Since excercise is essential to stay healthy, it is better to cycle daily instead of just one day in a week," he opined.
He said regular usage of cycles would ensure in mental and physical fitness of Cops and added that this was not his order but his wish.
He said that the Department would provide each station with five to ten cycles with the help of sponsors and propose to introduce more in future.
He added that if Cops show interest, use of cycles for day and night beats will come into practice soon. http://www.starofmysore.com

s.yogendra July 2nd, 2012, 07:11 PM 'BICYCLE TO WORK' ELICITS GOOD RESPONSE
Today being the second Monday of 'Bicycle to Work' campaign launched by the district administration, tremendous positive response was elicited from the staff of various government departments, with many staff pedalling their way to offices this morning, their numbers being more than last week.
The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) staff, who had stayed away from the campaign last Monday, came out in almost full strength, led by MCC Commissioner Dr. M.R. Ravi. Nearly 200 personnel of the MCC cycled from their homes and gathered at the Palace Kote Anjaneya temple, from where they pedalled together to MCC office premises via K.R. Circle. Many women employees either reached the office by walk or by the city bus.
Speaking to reporters, Dr. Ravi said that henceforth, MCC will be observing Mondays as 'Vehicles-Free Day' and the rule will be strictly implemented. Loans and subsidies will be provided to the employees who cannot purchase bicycles immediately, he said.
"We have identified six roads in city for marking Cycle Lanes which will be demarcated with yellow lines," he said.
The new rule has been near total effective at the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) where, like last week, cars and motorcycles of employees are not allowed inside.
Deputy Commissioner P.S. Vastrad was seen cycling to office with his gunman on the front seat of the double-seater bicycle. The DC also pedalled along with Steven Farrell of MyCycle, an agency that is promoting cycling in city. http://www.starofmysore.com
pnvijoo July 3rd, 2012, 01:39 PM Around 150 govt staff go cycling
Government employees in the city seem to have gone gaga over cycling to work. The DC's pedal-to-work call got a huge response form government staff on Monday.
This being the second Monday after June 25, many officials from different departments chipped in for the cause and spread the good word on the humble two-wheeler. DC P S Vastrad came on a tandem bicycle along with his gunman G Sathyavelu. MCC commissioner M R Ravi and food and civil supplies department deputy director Kumudha Girish came riding bicycles along with their staff from a common point on Monday.
Kumudha told TOI that she had stopped riding bicycle after her schooling. It has been 10 years now since she rode a bicycle. Kumudha rode from her Ramakrishnanagar residence to the DC's office, which is nearly 7 km. She took 35 minutes to reach the office as against 15 minutes in her official vehicle. She joined her colleagues at a place near the office and rode to office together.
Likewise, MCC chief Ravi too came riding and joined his staff near the north gate of Mysore Palace, from where they together pedaled to their office via Krishna Raja Circle. Some 80 MCC employees had brought bicycles on the second Monday. Ravi told reporters that he will ask his staff to either come to office in bicycles or shun vehicles on Mondays. He promised to help his staff purchase bicycles, if necessary.
Meanwhile, the corporation has identified six roads to create bicycle lanes.
One of the employees said making helmets compulsory would be good for the riders. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/Around-150-govt-staff-go-cycling/articleshow/14624512.cms
s.yogendra July 3rd, 2012, 05:57 PM They bicycled their way to office; Mysore officials set the trend
Government officials in Mysore have set a trend for many others to follow. They have decided to go Green. They have decided to keep aside their cars and other vehicles for a day and bicycle their way to their offices, at least once a day every week that is every Monday.
http://www.megamedianews.in/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Mysore-News.jpg
The Mysore District Deputy Commissioner PS Vastrad has made this a rule to all government officials and staff. Even IAS and KAS officers are seen on roads riding bicycles on way to office. On July 2, Monday, even DC Vastrad gave a pleasant surprise to Mysore people by seeing on a two seater bicycle along with his gunman. As people recognized him and waved at him, even the DC waved back. Certainly his move would be welcomed by one and all, and would also encourage people to go his way.
Meanwhile, it has been learnt that the Mysore Urban Development Authority Commissioner Dr CG Betasurmutt, has even made it a point that the office gates will not be opened for staff who arrive by their motor cycles on Monday. They would be sent back home and will be permitted only if they come by bicycles.
A good tend that needs to be emulated by other cities in the state. On Monday, Mysore Corporation Commissioner, ZP CEO, MUDA Commissioner, Food and Civil Supplies Department Deputy Director and several officials have arrived by bicycles. Even the traffic police have made arrangements for a separate lane for the officials cycling their way to office and encouraging the public to follow suit.http://www.megamedianews.in/index.php/62767/they-bicycled-their-way-to-office-mysore-officials-set-the-trend/
s.yogendra July 5th, 2012, 05:51 AM At Zoo, bicycles only mode of transport
Environment-friendly measure in menagerie is five-year-old
Pedalling bicycle to office is the in thing in Mysore following the order of deputy commissioner to opt environment friendly mode of transport to work, at least once in a week on every Monday.
At Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, it’s the only mode of transport, making it a first
in the city to embrace green friendly initiative, five years ago.
From executive director to animal keepers, office staff to security personnel, all take bicycles in the menagerie. No sooner they reach work place on their vehicles- four wheeler or two-wheeler, they park the same in dedicated place and hop on to bicycles or walk.
Executive director of the zoo, B P Ravi told Deccan Herald, there are 30 bicycles for the purpose since the year 2007. Barring emergency, when the veterinarians will be forced to take vehicles, bicycles are the only way to reach places in the zoo.
Earlier to that, though bicycles were there, not many were ready to shed their love for
motor. The situation was such that animal keepers were taking their two-wheelers till the enclosures. At times, it was troublesome not only for the visitors, but also for the animals and birds who prefer serene atmosphere.
Gradually, the animal keepers too fell in the line.
Not only zoo, there are 20 bicycles at Karanji Lake too, another tourist attraction managed by Zoo Authority of Karnataka (ZAK).
Ravi who is also regular in taking a ride on bicycle in the zoo just to take note of the happenings daily, says- pedalling not only helps keep environment clean, but also maintain good health for the user.
There are instances, when the curious visitors have asked for bicycles after seeing a zoo worker using the same.
Such is the response from visitors too. In a way bicycles are environment friendly and also visitor friendly. However, bicycles are not given for visitors.
But buggies, another green friendly mode of transport, is available not only for guests but also visitors to the zoo.
Another gate
In another visitor-friendly measure, it has been decided to construct another gate facing Mysore Race Club (MRC) for service vehicles only. Whenever the vehicles ferrying grass, fruits and also other essential commodities enter through the main gate, the visitors will be irked. If all goes according to the plans, new gate will be a reality in a month, Ravi added.http://www.deccanherald.com/content/261914/at-zoo-bicycles-only-mode.html
s.yogendra July 6th, 2012, 04:57 AM Mysore Zoo staff swear by cycling
To do their bit for the environment, a section of government employees in Mysore have started to pedal to work once a week. But the employees attached to Mysore Zoo have been doing the same for over a decade now.
Senior forest officer Kumar Pushkar, during his reign as the zoo director, restricted the entry of motorized vehicles inside the 70-acre facility. He had also asked the employee to use bicycles to commute within the facility. This was aimed at not disturbing the animals/ birds in captivity. Since then, everyone - from executive director to animal keepers to security guards -- in the zoo take bicycles to go round the facility for inspection or other work.
Keeping in view the number of visitors, especially during weekends and peak season, the authorities don't have plans to extend the facility to them. Sources at the zoo say it is not feasible because of the heavy inflow of visitors, especially during weekends and special seasons. The authorities admitted that there were a few enquiries from visitors after seeing their employees riding bicycles.
The zoo, however, has battery vehicles -- another eco-friendly mode of transport -- to offer to tour the zoo on a dedicated pathway of 3km.
An animal keeper said they have nearly two dozen bicycles for zoo employees. Earlier, they used to take their vehicles inside, which polluted the environs. He, however, felt that the idea of extending the facility to visitors may not be feasible because it may inconvenience others and also cause accidents.
When contacted, executive director B P Ravi said the zoo has strictly restricted the use of motorized vehicles, "except during emergencies". He, however, said: "As of now, the zoo doesn't any plan to provide bicycles to visitors." http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/Mysore-Zoo-staff-swear-by-cycling/articleshow/14701057.cms

s.yogendra July 9th, 2012, 06:35 PM NOW LADIES TOO JOIN CYCLING BABUS
For the third Monday in succession, officials of the District Administration today cycled to their offices keeping abreast with the practice of officials cycling their way to offices which was launched in city on June 25 at the behest of Deputy Commissioner P.S.Vastrad as part of austerity measures and preservation of eco-friendly atmosphere.
http://www.starofmysore.com/image.asp?slno=32780&type=news
Today, the officials of Mysore ZP accompanied by women employees of Mines and Geology — Padmaja and Sowmya, residents of Vijayanagar and Hebbal — cycled their way from their homes to the DC office where they joined their colleagues and proceeded to their offices.
It is interesting to note that the two ladies have purchased new cycles only for the purpose of pedaling their way to office, which they claimed, were doing in their childhood days.
They were accompanied by Additional DC Naganayak, MUDA Commissioner Dr. C.G. Betsurmuth, Deputy Director of Horticulture Nagaraj, Joint Dir-ector of Agriculture Krishnaiah and other officials.
Employees of MUDA also cycled to office. Security guards at MUDA were seen closing the gates for those employees who had come in their motor vehicles.
About 150 employees of various government sectors and other officials too pedaled to their offices today. http://www.starofmysore.com

They could have curved the footpath a bit (conclave type) near gate.
But, the real issue is what are the measures they have incorporated to prevent two wheelers and other vehicles running on footpath. The other picture in previous pages showed motorized two wheelers running on NMT (bicycle) tracks.

s.yogendra July 13th, 2012, 08:33 PM Officers are promoting cycling in Mysore
District administration and directorate of urban land transport (DULT) are on a mission to promote bicycling in Mysore.
The administration on Friday discussed on how to promote cycling in Mysore with officials attached to Regional transport offices, education department and police and with heads/representatives of educational institutions at deputy commissioner's office and took suggestions from them on this score.
DC P S Vastrad told the meeting they are initiating Public bicycle scheme (PBS) under which one can hire bicycles from specific points and then drop at another point, to promote bicycling in Mysore as well as to arrest the carbon footprints. The campaign 'pedal to work' on every Mondays among district employees has got off well and now that they want to take it to the next level by promoting cycling among public.
They are planning to create bicycle lanes in the heritage core area, provide parking space and to improve some of traffic junctions to facilitate bicycle users. There are a lot of bicycle users in the city and we are now thinking to create infrastructure for them, explained the DC adding the proposed scheme will be taken up once they complete primary works of providing facilities.
DULT special officer Shylendra Singh said they have done a survey in the city and have identified some 24 places including Mysore Palace, bus stands, Railway station, tourism office, Karanji Lake and St Philomena's church here for the proposed PBS project. We are ready to extend the stations if educational institutions come forward by providing space for parking. To start with they have plans to keep minimum 12 bicycles at each station. This will help people to ride bicycles without investing on cycles, which are expensive, the officer explained.
DDPI Basavaraj, DDPU Krishnaiah, ACP (Traffic) Shankregowda, ARTOs Ramesh and Padmanabha were present.http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/Officers-are-promoting-cycling-in-Mysore/articleshow/14866943.cms

s.yogendra July 14th, 2012, 05:17 PM MYSORE SOON TO BECOME BICYCLE CITY
Mysore is soon going to be a Bicycle City and the Public Bicycle Sharing System is going to be a reality.
http://www.starofmysore.com/image.asp?slno=32835&type=news
As of now, 24 places have been identified in the city for Public Bicycle stands, said Shailendra Singh, Special Officer to the Directorate of Urban Land Transport.
Shailendra Singh, while addressing a meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s office here yesterday, said that the Palace, Zoo, Railway Station, city bus stand, Ganapati Sachchidananda Ashram and Dasara Exhibition Ground are the places among 24 locations identified for the stand.
A stand can accommodate minimum of 12 bicycles and the users can obtain a bicycle after paying the fixed rent.
They can park the bicycles at the dedicated places, after reaching the destinations.
Lending bicycles not only helps the people, especially tourists, for whom looking for a bicycle and also its security will not be a problem.
Deputy Commissioner P.S. Vastrad, who was present at the meeting, said that the Mysore University and other educational institutions in the city must also encourage cycling as a popular mode of transport in their respective campuses.
He instructed the officers to identify the locations for creating stand facilities.
Inspection
A team of officers including MUDA Commissioner Dr. C.G. Betsurmath, ACP (Traffic) Shankaregowda and others inspected the bicycle track in the evening.
The bicycle lane was marked with paint to enable the cyclists to pedal safely on the tracks. Also, it would be a warning to other speeding motorists not to encroach the path of cyclists. http://www.starofmysore.com
s.yogendra July 15th, 2012, 07:44 PM Mysore emerging as a city of cycles
After some decades, Mysore is emerging as a city of cycles - firstly as a move to check environmental pollution and secondly to curb increasing vehicular flow and fuel consumption.
The move by the district authorities of introducing ‘cycle day on Mondays’ is gradually catching up with other governmental agencies asking its employees to pedal all the way from their homes to offices and back.
Now, the authorities have planned to create ‘cycle stands’ at important centres where cyclists can pick up a bicycle on hire and leave them at the cycle stand close to their destination.
The authorities have identified 24 centres where bicycles will be parked in the city. At each cycle stand, a dozen bicycles will be made available to the public. Says Transport Directorate Special Officer Shailendra Singh, places identified for cycle stands include railway station, bus stand, Mysore Palace and Ganapathi Sachchidananda Ashram.
Other ways to popularise public cycle scheme were discussed at a meeting held at the deputy commissioner’s office and a decision to create cycle stands was taken to encourage public to opt for cycling, instead of using motor vehicles. It was decided to set up cycle stands at important centres where public can hire a cycle and leave at the stand near their destination.
“This will avoid public buying a cycle for their use and its maintenance. This is a pro-cycle friendly approach too,” Singh said.
Use of cycles would catch up further if educational institutions and university campuses provide similar facility, he added.
Deputy Commissioner P S Vastrad said this was a very good move and would be an additional attraction in the fast growing tourist destination city of Mysore. Besides, visitors, local people can also increasingly use bicycles.
To popularise use of bicycles among office-goers, a cycle rally was conducted last month with top officials pedaling from their homes to offices, led by the deputy commissioner and top police officers headed by Police Commissioner K L Sudheer.
Happy over the response to the initiative, the deputy commissioner had suggested all officers to bicycle to their offices from their homes on every Monday of the week. He had also suggested the police to ensure cyclists’ safety and office-heads to provide cycle stands at their offices.
Responding to his direction, offices including the Mysore City Corporation and the Mysore Urban Development Authority have asked their staff to ride on bicycles on Mondays to their offices and back home. The Police have begun marking ‘cycle tracks’ on around 25 kms to ensure cyclists’ safe riding on major roads in the city.
Before motor vehicles became popular mode of private transport, most of the people owned bicycles in the city. Besides cycle stands at all offices, cycle shops, set up private shop keepers, provided facilities like repairs and maintenance. The then Municipality was collecting licence of fee of Rs 2 a cycle, which all disappeared with more vehicles beginning to appear on the roads.http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/mysore-emerging-ascitycycles/480502/

The district administration and Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) are on a mission to promote bicycling in Mysore. s.yogendra July 16th, 2012, 08:37 PM CM in Mysore, but officials' plan to cycle to work undeterred
The CM's brief tour of the city on Monday affected the top officials' plans to cycle to work. But DC P S Vastrad, who has initiated it, managed to pedal to work even as he managed to adhere to protocol requiring him to tail the CM traveling in his official car.
In to fourth week, the cycle to work found takers with 122 government employees pedaling to work, according to figures available at the DC office. MUDA, which took the lead with majority of its employees cycling, has been overtaken by the Mysore City Corporation employees. As against 37 MUDA staff, 45 employees attached to the MCC cycled to work. It is 12 for the revenue department.
Vastrad started his works pedaling to the Zilla Panchayat, where he is incharge CEO and got back to Jalasannidhi, his official residence from where he took car for the helipad at the foothills of Chamundi Hills to receive the CM and Deputy CM R Ashoka and toured with him. Once the VIPs left to Bangalore at 1.30 pm, the DC hopped on to bicycle and attended an event hosted by the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) at Kalamandir, a stone's throwaway from his residence and pedaled to his office. However, he didn't use his tandem cycle.
MUDA commissioner C G Betsurmath too didn't give up cycling, his mode of transport since three Mondays now. He cycled to MUDA from his Kuvempunagar residence after he is done with the CM's protocol duties. He told TOI he got back home at 1.45 pm and took bicycle to work since he enjoyed it.
The officials said they were forced to use their vehicles since the CM was in the town. Like deputy director of information A R Prakash, who skipped cycling. There was no other option. But I'll compensate it either taking public transport or cycling one day this week, he stated. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/CM-in-Mysore-but-officials-plan-to-cycle-to-work-undeterred/articleshow/15003757.cms?
s.yogendra July 17th, 2012, 06:20 PM Firm pays staff for cycling to work
An IT firm here is paying Rs 1,000 a month each to its employees for cycling to work.
http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2012/07/17/employees-200.jpg
Divya Pushparaj of Qwinix Technologies, a social media aficionado, said the company, located at Metagalli on KRS Road here, has only nine employees on its roster and the incentive has already spurred three among them to take to cycling to office daily.
Staffers Raghavendra K S, Raghavendra Joshi and Vikram Nirle—who reside in T K Layout, about seven km from their workplace—have made bicycles their regular mode of commute.
Three other employees—Divya B who lives near K R Circle, Pooja A from Vontikoppal and Mathew Joseph from Metagalli—have also turned into bicycle enthusiasts and use the eco-friendly two-wheeler quite often. The norm for earning the incentive is to cycle to work on at least 75 per cent of workdays in a month. Darshan Puttanaiah, CEO of the firm who launched Qwinix in the US city of Denver in 2007, opened a branch in the city in April this year. The offer letter sent to new recruits spells out that Rs 1,000 incentive awaits employees who adopt the green mode of travel.
Speaking to Deccan Herald, staffer Raghavendra K S said he rode a motorbike when he worked for another company previously. After he joined Qwinix, the pro-cycling incentive made him purchase a brand new bicycle.
Three months into pedalling his way to office now, Raghavendra said cycling keeps him fresh and energetic throughout the day.
Affirming that it was, indeed, good exercise, Raghavendra said he now used the bicycle even when off duty.
He urged other companies to offer similar incentives to employees which help promote a clean environment.

s.yogendra July 17th, 2012, 08:55 PM Pink pillars to adorn Rajamarga
White, pink or white?
The MCC council on Tuesday resolved to install pink granite pillars as barricades against the earlier decided white pillars, on Rajamarga.
The works on Rajamarga (Royal way) an ambitious project of the city corporation, taken up under the chief minister’s special grant of Rs 100 crore, was launched in the year 2010. With local body deciding for installing pink pillars on either side from Hardinge Circle to Bannimantap, also the jamboo savari route (from statue circle to Bannimantap), the cost escalates per metre of the pillars.
Earlier, it had been decided to install white barricades at the cost of Rs 3,500 for the 5.15 km stretch. Recently, in the month of April, then commissioner K S Raykar revised the plan and finalised pink barricades costing Rs 33,500 per running metres. The reason being-soot that forms after the smoke emits from the vehicles and settles on white barricades, that will surely turn it ugly.
Instead of laying the barricades up to Bannimantap, the pink granite stones will be installed only from Hardinge to Government Ayuredic Hospital circle to cut down the cost.
According to engineer Padmanabh who is also in-charge of the project, the said route consists of heritage buildings of types, when compared to the route after Ayurvedic Hospital junction, replete with commercial activities.http://www.deccanherald.com/content/265094/pink-pillars-adorn-rajamarga.html

s.yogendra July 23rd, 2012, 06:42 PM DC LAUNCHES 'ME AND MY CYCLE' SCHEME
The response to the call of Deputy Commissioner to cycle to work on Mondays seems to be overwhelming with more and more people taking up cycling.
http://www.starofmysore.com/image.asp?slno=32934&type=news
Inspired by the immense response, MUDA Commissioner Dr. C.G.Betsurmath conceived and conceptualised stickers with the phrase ‘Me and My Cycle’ printed in English and Kannada.
Deputy Commissioner P.S. Vastrad launched a drive today at MUDA office where he got the stickers pasted in the front and rear of bicycles of 60 MUDA employees, who will carry on the mission of popularizing cycling to reduce fuel consumption and preserve environment.
Speaking on the occasion, Vastrad said that he had appealed to the DDPI to instruct all school teachers to cycle to work on Mondays. He added that the needed land for establishing cycle stands at 12 prominent places like bus stand, railway station, Palace, zoo, MUDA office and DC’s office would be handed over to the Directorate of Urban Land Transport in a week and the stands would come up in due course of time to evolve the Public Bicycle Sharing System.
Dr. Betsurmath said that the cycles had put 22 vehicles of MUDA to rest on Mondays saving fuel and a lot of money. He added that the employees were very proud to cycle to work. He said that all employees would come to work in uniforms on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. http://www.starofmysore.com
s.yogendra July 24th, 2012, 02:07 PM CYCLING @ RS. 70 FOR 900 KMS !
In keeping with the 'cycling mood' of the district admi-nistration, one of the industrial entrepreneurs participating in the M-ZIM interaction this morning, displayed a model of battery-operated cycle which he proposes to produce on a commercial scale.
The entrepreneur Ananth, resident of Hebbal and a qualified Electrical Engineer, claimed that the battery-operated cycle could run for 900 kms at a cost of Rs. 70 only.
The cost of modifying a cycle is approximately Rs. 14,000. This includes a new cycle, battery and accessories. Ananth said the battery and other accessories could be fitted to any cycle — male, female and unisex bicycle models. While the battery is mounted on the horizontal bar in the male cycle, the unisex and female cycles have batteries on the carrier or beside the carrier. Anyone can get their cycles modified by Ananth for Rs. 9,000. So far Ananth has sold 12,000 such cycles. http://www.starofmysore.com

"I am not interested in words; all I want is timely completion of quality works in JNNURM projects," demanded MCC Commissioner Dr. M.R.Ravi here last night.
http://www.starofmysore.com/image.asp?slno=32967&type=news
During his surprise spot inspection of JNNURM works in the surrounding areas of Palace, he took the contractors to task and demanded them to complete the works, which are still in progress for the last several months.
Taking Amit Nair, Zonal Manager of Chabria Associates, Hyderabad, which is entrusted with Rs. 15.4 crore works, to task, the MCC Commissioner warned the Zonal Manager to complete the works on time to which Amit Nair reportedly said that once the clearance for felling 14 trees and removal of one electric pole coming in the way of the works was received, the works on underground drainage and shifting of electric pole will be completed.
Working in darkness
The Commissioner, during inspection, expressed shock at the works being done in darkness and suggested the contractor to provide lighting facilities at the spot.
Answering a query from the MCC Commissioner, Amit Nair said that 90 labourers were working from 8 am to 10 pm. Dr. Ravi asked the contractor not to indulge in shifting the workers elsewhere but instead expedite the ongoing works.
JNNURM Assistant Executive Engineer Puttasheshagiri, Assistant Engineer Lakshmanegowda and site engineer Manjunath accompanied the MCC Commissioner. http://www.starofmysore.com

Betsurmath, MUDA Superintending Engineer Mahesh and 20 other officials rode bicycles at 8.15 am from the DC office, via Kukkarahalli lake road, Bogadi and Outer Ring Road, to Infosys.

Teachers cycle to schools
Mysore, July 30- In conformation with the DC's rule of cycling to work on Mondays imposed on all government staff in city, more than 200 teachers this morning adopted the 'humble but healthy' mode of transport by pedalling from their homes to the DC office where they assembled by 9.30 am.
They then pedalled to the Zilla Panchayat office, where they signed and then resumed their trips to their respective schools.
Among the 220 teachers who bicycled to work today was a lone lady teacher — Sarojini, a Physical Education Co-ordinator. It is noteworthy that among the 1,500 teachers in city's government primary schools, maximum of them are women.
S. Guruswamy, 55, a resident of Srirampura, who was among the teachers who pedalled to work today, said that bicycle has been his means of transport for the past 30 years.
Block Education Officers Raghunandan and Karigowda, Mysore District Primary School Teachers' Association President Somegowda, Secretary Raju and others were present.
Though several staff of the MUDA and the ZP complied with the 'bicycle to work' rule, the staff at MCC seemed to be oblivious to the campaign this Monday. http://www.starofmysore.com

If everything goes according to plan, movement of motorized vehicles in the heritage core area - surrounding Mysore Palace and a segment of Sayyaji Rao Road -- will be restricted during weekends. This means a welcome fillip to non-motorized vehicles like bicycle, battery vehicles and tongas. Now that the bicycle promotion is in full swing after deputy commissioner P S Vastrad initiated pedal-to- work campaign, the DC is planning to restrict movement of motorized vehicles on Sayyaji Rao Road for at least two hours during weekends on n experimental basis. But the Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Sayyaji Rao Road shopowners and tenants association members are opposing it.A police officer felt that the idea would work in the long run. Traffic has increased by leaps and bounds over the years in the core area of Mysore city and definitely there is urgent need to address the issue.
As there is not much scope to widen the stretch, it is better to promote non-motorized vehicles and mass transportation.Vastrad told TOI that recently he held a meeting with the traders. ``As some of them were against the proposed idea, I have given them time to reconsider the decision. The proposed idea is feasible in the long run and we want to try it,'' he explained. The DC is expected to meet the traders again next week. Meanwhile, Mysore Sayyaji Rao Road shopowners and tenants association members have resolved to oppose the proposed move claiming there is no air or sound pollution as also no congestion in the core area. They have appealed to the DC to reconsider his decision saying that it would inconvenience them. When contacted, MCCI president Sudharkar Shetty said:
``The idea is not feasible as Sayyaji Rao Road is a main thoroughfare in the central business district.'' Of late, cycle hits headlines often, for every Monday being the day to pedal to office for the district officers, thanks to the district administration for calling to adopt green friendly mode of transportation.
The cultural programmes organised as part of 66th Independence Day celebrations at Chamundi Vihar stadium too was not bereft of cycles.
A group of 650 students of St Anne’s School, N R Mohalla in the city presented a dance drama on ‘Nammee Thaynelavu’ ( Our motherland), pedalling cycles at the end of the show making it an apt character for the year.
Students clad in blue, red, green and orange coloured t-shirts on cycles with handles decorated with tapes in tricolour, were the cynosure of all the eyes.
They also formed a human pyramid, but without bicycles thus stealing the show. The portraits of Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh and Rajguru were displayed.
While 300 students of Paramahamsa Vidyalaya presented ‘Bharathambe Ninna Janmadina’ (Mother India it’s your birthday), 550 students of Annayyappa Bhyraveshwara School, Hebbal danced for ‘Nada Geethe’, besides performing Veeragase.
A total of 300 students from Chinmaya Vidyalaya performed Yogasana starting from Sooryanamaskar to different asanas, thus spreading the message of better health.http://www.deccanherald.com/content/271892/cycling-students-make-cultural-treat.html

s.yogendra August 22nd, 2012, 10:41 AM Mysore palace premises to be pedestrian-friendly
Visitors to the Mysore palace may soon be able to enjoy the beauty of the architectural splendour without being affected by pollution and distracted by the din of honking vehicles that crisscross the roads surrounding the mansion.
The Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) and the Mysore district commissioner are chalking out plans to make the area around the palace accessible only through non-motorised transport.
Embarq India—which works together with local transport authorities to reduce pollution and create safe urban public spaces—has been asked to prepare a plan on how to go about this.
Sanjay Sridhar of Embarq said: “Usually, during the Dussehra festival, the area around the palace is accessible only through non-motorised transport. We plan to make this a permanent feature. Apart from the area within the palace walls, we will create a buffer zone around the structure that can only be accessed through non-motorised transport,” he said.
The project aims to provide protection to the palace from pollution and help keep it clean. It also aims to help revive and protect the ‘character’ of the city.
“Mysore is a heritage city. With increasing urbanisation, we are afraid that it is losing its character and charm. With the project, we hope to help protect the city’s character,” said Sridhar.
With over 3.5 million people visiting the city a year, the project is expected to have quite an impact. “It will also add to the city’s economy with greater opportunities for visibility—be it with regard to the palace, reviving the tonga travelling culture or even giving tourists and visitors and more stress-free time around the palace,” he said.
Embarq is trying to identify the area that will be made the buffer zone. According to Sridhar, there are a number of things to be looked at while doing this. “There are some major roads in this area that connect to schools, the railway station, etc. We are looking at how we can do this,” he said.
“Mysore will be the first city to do this,” he said. “We are hoping that in time, other heritage cities and areas will also learn from the project,” he added.http://www.dnaindia.com/bangalore/report_mysore-palace-premises-to-be-pedestrian-friendly_1731142
engineer.akash August 22nd, 2012, 10:19 PM Soon, you can hire bicycles from stations
MYSORE: Here is some happy news for bicycle enthusiasts in Mysore. The district administration is going all out to promote bicycling in a big way by introducing public bicycle sharing (PBS) system in Mysore before Dasara.
Authorities will float tenders by early next week inviting private players to assist them in the proposed project.
Perhaps this is the first tier-II city in India to embark on this green initiative.
Under the scheme, bicycle stands will be created across the city areas and about a dozen bicycles each will be stationed for public use. One can hire bicycles from any of these stations and then drop them at any other station.
Locations have been identified for the proposed project and authorities have covered important spots like railway stations and bus stands and even tourists spot like Mysore Zoo, Mysore Palace and St Philomena's church.
This will help authorities in promoting bicycling and help passengers save money in commuting. For instance, a person travelling from Kuvempunagar, an upscale locality, to the railway station can take a bicycle from a PBS bicycle stand nearby, leave the cycles at the railway station PBS stand and continue their onward journey.
This move will be most useful for early morning and late evening commuters as auto fares are usually double during the time and public transport is scarce.
Initially, authorities were planning to offer the service free of cost for the first one hour but that has been ruled out. The charges, however, will be nominal, said an official. Last month, deputy commissioner P S Vastrad held a meeting with managements of all educational institutions seeking their cooperation to set up bicycle stands at their campuses. Many had promised to offer space then.
No immediate ban
To a query, Vastrad said they don't have any immediate plan to ban movement of motorized vehicles in the central business district, especially in the vicinity of Mysore Palace.

Mysore City Corporation Commissioner M.R. Ravi has said that the contractor implementing Raja Marga work near the Mysore palace has been warned that the contract entered as per the tender rules would be cancelled if work was not completed before Dasara.
“The contractor has been asked to complete the works by Dasara,” the Commissioner said in a release in response to the demand of the members of the Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industry here recently.http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article3869024.ece
s.yogendra September 12th, 2012, 02:59 PM DELAY IN PAYMENT: CONTRACTOR STOPS RAJA MARGA WORK
The work on the Raja Marga, already crippled with the non-cooperation and apathetic attitude of officials and as well as the lack of co-ordination among the concerned departments, has now come to a grinding halt, allegedly due to non-payment of dues to the contractor.
The work, which was going on at a slow pace, with underground cable lines running every where in the area proving to be a major hurdle, has come to a grinding halt since 15 days. With this, the MCC Commissioner's assurance that the Raja Marga works will be completed before Dasara seems to be falling apart.
The MCC was to pay Rs. 68 lakh to the contractor even before last year's Dasara and his repeated pleas to the then MCC Commissioner have gone in vain.
The incumbent MCC Commissioner Dr. Ravi, who inspected the Raja Marga works last month, had directed the contractor to expedite the work while assuring that all hurdles will be cleared.
The Raja Marga works is undertaken by Hyderabad-based company Vabra Associates.
With the work on the stretch between Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar Circle and K.R. Circle coming to a grinding halt, vehicular and pedestrian movement on the road has been affected. The problem gets further compounded when it rains, with the entire area becoming slushy.
When MCC Superintending Engineer Krishna was contacted on the matter, he just said that he had no information about the stoppage of work. http://www.starofmysore.com

s.yogendra September 25th, 2012, 01:49 PM Mysore to have India’s first cycle sharing scheme
Mysore will be the first Indian city where people can get bicycles to cover short distances for free. The city, which has been selected for the Public Cycle Sharing Scheme, will get around 5,000 cycles so that people have more access to this mode of transport. The move aims to promote non-motorized transport in the city.
A senior urban development ministry official said the project will take off in the next 6-8 months and the project cost would be approximately Rs 5-7 crore. The funds will come from the World Bank under its Global Environment Facility (GEF) scheme. "We have the required funds and the project is in an advance stage," the official said.
The plan will be implemented by Mysore City Corporation under Mysore City Land transport Authority ( MCLTA) and the objective behind this initiative is to make some areas free of vehicles. Bicycle sharing systems have gained popularity as a way to solve the "last mile" problem and connect users to public transit networks. It also addresses issues including loss from theft or vandalism, lack of parking or storage and maintenance requirements.
UD officials said that under this scheme, users can take a cycle from one stand and leave it at another so that the same cycle can be used by other people. "In this case, people use bicycles without owning them and the accessibility increases manifold," an official said.
Though such a scheme was started by Delhi Metro at select Metro stations, it has been a failure barring areas close to Delhi University. But there also it has remained as "cycle rental scheme" where users have to pay user charges and are responsible for safety of the cycle.
UD officials said in this case, the focus of revenue generation has been from displaying advertisement and hence the private agencies have low priority of providing good services. "We want that the revenue should go to the parent agency and then it should be passed on to the private players. This would ensure greater efficiency," they added.
Till May 2011, there were around 136 bike-sharing programmes in 165 cities across the world. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Mysore-to-have-Indias-first-cycle-sharing-scheme/articleshow/16536957.cms
s.yogendra September 26th, 2012, 04:29 PM Cycle-to-school drive has few takers
The education department's cycle-to-school initiative has not enthused schools and children alike. Under the proposal, schoolchildren are advised to cycle to school every Monday. After the district administration embarked on the 'pedal to work' campaign for its employees, it aimed at schools next. Last month, the department instructed over 600 schools in north and south blocks of the city to cycle to work one day a week or shun motorized vehicles on Mondays. There would be checks to see if students were coming in motorized vehicles to schools.
Also, the department appealed to teachers attached to city government schools to pedal to work on Mondays. The BEOs of all blocks endorsed the cycling campaign and at a meeting with school heads, urged them to promote the same. However, school authorities have reservations about the drive.
Most of them feel that implementing the cycle-to-school campaign is not an easy task as not everyone can obey it. Children too find it difficult to cycle to school in the city due to traffic hazards and parents' disapproval. Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) Mysore BK Basavaraju said that many children staying in the vicinity of schools cycled to school but asking all students to comply would not be easy.
Schoolteachers are also protesting against the implementation of the campaign, he added. The idea of promoting cycling in school was to make children learn eco-friendly habits at an early age and also teachers lead by example. But they should follow it voluntarily as forcing them would be futile, he said.
He mentioned that some teachers are commuting to school on Mondays using public transport.BEO (North) R Karigowda said that 95 per cent of teachers are in their late 40s and some of them have medical problems. Even the younger lot is hesitant in cycling to work, he said. Though we have asked them to use cycle to keep fit, they have not taken it in the right spirit, he pointed out.Another school headmistress, who didn't want to be named, said the move was pointless as many of the teachers are not young and stay far from the schools. They would be completely exhausted if they cycled such long distances, she said. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/Cycle-to-school-drive-has-few-takers/articleshow/16556091.cms
vasanthr September 27th, 2012, 07:52 AM ^^
This is a good initiative. Nowadays students start using gearless scooters from 16 (as soon as they join PU) itself. Cycle to college will be even better since school children either walk, or take bus or cycle mostly. Some of them will get lift from their parents. Cycling is the fastest and most comfortable transport for school children especially in Mysore where there is less problem of 'cabbies' like Bangalore who pose most danger to cyclists and 2 wheelers.
Ofcourse, some aged who are 50+ especially ladies might not be knowing how to ride a bicycle. Scheme is concentrating on students more than teachers.
In this video, Mr. Ramdas also tells reporters that 'College Children will be more benefitted'.

engineer.akash February 5th, 2013, 03:08 PM RAJA MARGA TO BE PAVED WITH ORNAMENTAL WHITE STONES
Mysore, Feb. 5- Mayor Rajeshwari Puttaswamy passed a ruling in the MCC Council meet yesterday that the Raja Marga in city — the royal path through which passes the Jumboo Savari — will be paved with the ornamental Sadarahalli white stones.
This decision, which was unanimously supported by all members, comes as an amendment to an earlier decision in which it had been proposed to erect pink-stone pillars along the Raja Marga.
Former Mayor Sandesh Swamy, addressing the Council, said that the MCC Commissioner has come here to work for the city’s development but no work is taking place here. “The Corporators are being portrayed as villains for the non-completion of Raja Marga work,” he said and added that the Council must issue a statement clarifying that none of the Corporators had hampered the Raja Marga work.
In reply to this, MCC Commissioner Dr. M.R. Ravi clarified that none of the Corporators had caused any trouble with regard to the Raja Marga. “The contractor Chhabria Constructions had been asked to lay the pinkstones at a cost of Rs. 33,000 per square feet. However, since the pink-stone mines have been closed down, the Raja Marga work had been stalled,” said Ravi and when he sought permission for laying white stones, the Council granted approval unanimously.
Regarding the Chief Minister’s Rs. 100 crore grant, Sandesh Swamy asked why the work had not commenced even though the required funds were released. It is being rumoured that the Income Tax Department has confiscated all your bank accounts. Is it true?” he questioned.
In reply, Dr. Ravi said, “The funds come to the joint account of the Deputy Commissioner and MCC Commissioner. Funds can be released for commencing the works only if he grants permission. The Government had been urged to change this system earlier. But it did not take place.”
MysoreOne February 11th, 2013, 08:46 AM Few takers for 25-foot pavement
Being five-foot wide is enough for any pavement to be pedestrian-friendly. But I Main Road in VV Puram has a 25-foot pavement stretching up to the compound walls of the adjoining houses. This unusually big pavement has raised many questions besides causing threat to shade trees.
Two months ago, Mysore City Corporation laid inter-locking tiles over the pavement at a cost of Rs 10 lakh. However, people feel that MCC has spent a huge amount for the work. Interestingly, not many pedestrians use the pavement.
Dwarkanath Narayan, convener of Mysore Grahakara Parishat, questioned the necessity of having such a wide pavement: "Five-foot footpath is more than sufficient. A 10-foot footpath may well be called a 'Rajamarga'! What was the need to build a 25-foot pavement?"
"Inter-locking tiles allows percolation of rainwater. But when it rains heavily, most of the water ends up on the road, thanks to unscientifically built pavement (it has a gradient towards the road) which harms the asphalt. The footpath has a nice canopy of shade trees. They might now die because of less percolation of rainwater," he said.
Dwarakanath said that the road has a travel agency which offers four-wheeler rental service. "The wide pavement is being used to park many cars," he alleged.
When contacted, Ward No. 30 corporator Parvathi P R said that such a wide pavement is not necessary, "but the same was built following pressure from general public". "We had thought of building an ordinary pavement. But public kept on demanding for a wider one," she claimed, adding that they wanted to have such a wider pavement to avoid mud being spilled on to road during rain. "The pavement also doubles as parking lot," she stated.http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/Few-takers-for-25-foot-pavement/articleshow/18434852.cms

http://www.starofmysore.com/image.asp?slno=35291&type=news
Mysore, Feb. 24- The proposed Rajamarga which was supposed to add to the heritage look of the city and the footpath works around the Palace is doubtful of getting completed even by this Dasara.
Since funds for the works on the Rajamarga, Palace footpath and the multi-level parking at the Town Hall are yet to be released, the respective contractors have decided to stall the works from today.
Under the Chief Minister's Rs. 100 crore grant, Rs. 18 crore had been allotted for Rajamarga; Rs. 18 crore under JNNURM scheme had been allotted for the footpath work around the Palace and Rs. 18 crore had been allotted for the multi-level parking to Chabriya Associates from Hyderabad. However, a payment of Rs. 13.30 cr. from all the three works is yet to be paid.
Although the bills relating to the works had been submitted seven to eight months back, the officials have not released the funds. Without the clearance of the bills, further works cannot be taken up. Hence we have decided to stall the works, says Chabriya Associates Manager Amit Sahani.
------------
It was ordered to complete all the three works before Dasara. But the stalling of works by the contractors since their bills have not been cleared has not come to my notice. Talks will be held immediately with the contractors and their problems will be solved so that the works will be completed by this Dasara.
