Nominating Guidelines:

It must be absolutely clear that you intend to nominate something. Therefore, each nomination must be preceded by "I nominate ...".
Make sure to include the official name of the nomination, as well as where it is located - city, and country.
All nominations require pictures to accompany them. Post pictures only, not links to websites with pictures. Post only the best pictures that represent your nomination accurately, and in the best way possible. Avoid posting large pictures or panoramas, instead include links to them.
Only two (2) nominees per country are allowed. Therefore, choose only the most distinctive, exceptional nominees. Basically, the best in the country! It's a good idea to discuss the nominations with your fellow countrymen, and posters, so that everyone comes to an agreement about what should be nominated. If more nominees are posted per country, only the first two will be considered.
Since there are only 15 spots on the poll, the first 15 valid nominations will be submitted. To avoid disappointment, post your nominations as early as possible. To make sure that your nominations are not late, you can even post the nomination without any pictures first, and edit them in later.

Voting Guidelines:

Each member has to vote for exactly five (5) nominees on the list. Do not vote for any less, or any more. There are no exceptions! The votes of whoever chooses to disregard this rule will be omitted from the final count.
Do your best to vote as honestly and fairly as possible, putting all of your biases aside. This does not mean that, for example, you cannot vote for your city/country. It means that you should vote for the nominees that you think truly deserve to be in the top league.
Review all of the pictures posted for the nominations, even if you think you remember all of them from the nominations thread. This will refresh them in your mind, allowing you to make a wiser choice.

Maybe even today. I'm gonna ask if anybody has any final submissions, and if not, I will make the poll today.

Sergei
November 26th, 2004, 07:15 AM
We need to decide how to narrow the results! I have over 70 nominations for Churches, and I'm too tired to count the Castles now.

We need to narrow it down to 15!

Wicky
November 26th, 2004, 08:05 AM
What about making two polls about the castles and possibly churches: the first one will be one, or two castles from each country and the second one maybe randomly choosed, maybe choosed by population/area of the land, participated. It´s just an idea, might be not ideal though.

^^^

I already suggested this a while ago, I'll repeat now my suggestion.

Let's make only one thread and vote for 5 best churches/castles. Since there are too many options, it's best to make no poll but just name 5 options and writhe the options down by everyone in their reply. In the end somebody (iMariah) will count everyone's options and announce the final result. This would be the most accurate way to do this :)
Making separate threads will not work accurately, also limiting the number of churches from one country isn't good since who is going to tell which ones to choose?

The thing is, I don't have time to go through pages after pages of votes, and count all of them for 70 NOMINEES! Plus, I'm sure there will be comments, not only votes, which will make it even more difficult.

In this case I'm afraid there's no a real proper solution. Maybe limitation of nominees from each country is the only way. Some people just submited a bunch of quite "average" (IMO) churches just to increase the number of nominations from one country.

I think so too. I specifically said that they should submit a church that they think could be in the TOP 5 of EE, but I saw many post just regular churches you see everyday.

@iMariah I think alien is partly right.
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=4076493&postcount=20
Since there is 20 countries considered EE, first should be counted 15 nominations from 15 different countries and then, if there is less nominations than from 15 countries, first second nominations from each country should be included.
It's a little change but it makes EE Series much more objective. :)

Thanks Petr for the suggestion. I was thinking the same thing myself, but I believe we have discussed this before, and people were pretty unhappy about it.

I think their argument was that if a country has 2 nominations that are 'better', and another country with a 'worse' nomination gets in, and the other 'better' one doesn't because of limitations, then it wouldn't be reliable.

Also, people said that the people who are really eager to participate in this contest, and post early shouldn't lose out to someone who decides to post their country late.

Anyway, I can see both sides, and both have their pluses and minuses, but I definately think that your suggestion will make it more diverse.

I can propose this again to our members, and see what they think. Anyone have any comments?

and exactly this happend in the bridge nomination. some countries lets say with one good nomination and second with worse (or with both bad nominations)get in. And others who post lately dont fit.

I can propose this again to our members, and see what they think. Anyone have any comments?

The questoin is if we want to make happier some forumers or to have more objective polls. :) I mean, often not the best nominees are proposed at the beggining but those which come from the countries strongly represented on the forum: Poland, Serbia, B&H and Ukraine.
I'm sure that in the majority of the cases there will be some places for the first second nominees.

As you can all see, we've changed a few things:

Everything about BoEE will be convenienty in this thread. There will be no more "Schedule" or "Rules" threads. They are both incorporated into the main thread.

Furthermore, there will not be a schedule with set dates for each installment. The contest will run close to the schedule now, but there will be some flexibility, so we don't want to set the dates in stone (since they rarely occur on the dates that we set anyway). You can check the rough plan of each series in the main post as well. The installments are listed in order, so that should give you a rough idea.

:)

Sarajevo has some 7-8 Orthodox and 3-4 Catholic churches, so maximal 12 churches. There's also that one Mila posted, Protestant? So that makes it 13, right?

Anyway, why is it important that Sarajevo has more mosques than churches? Islam is that kind of religion, muslims build a lot of mosques. Orthodox Christians don't. Muslims go more often to mosque, Orthodox Christians don't. I only go to church on Christmas, Easter and on Saint Jovan and Saint Nikola, plus when I'm in Belgrade I always go to Saint Petka Paraskeva church...

Agressive religion. It asks too much from a beleiver. Being muslims is way of life, and it should't be that way.

Religion isn't there to dictates your life, it's there to be with you when you need it. That's one of the reasons I prefer Orthodoxy than Catholicism, by the way.

I agree, but I think it applies to very religious people in any religion.

For example, I know a few Christian people who are so religious, it pretty much dictates how they should live their lives, which I don't think is good at all.

It's almost as they're brainwashed to believe their own beliefs, and not to accept other points of view. In many ways, for these extremely religious people, it limits their lives. I think many religious people are very closed-minded, and that's a very bad trait.

Im sure every muslim knows that he has pray to God 5 times A DAY,its one of the 5 general factors of being muslim.. if u dont do that ure practically "musliman na baterije" (muslim on batteries) hehe... There had been just one category: Best churches.
Because of the number and variety of churches in EE, I don't think it was a good solution:

What about:

1. Best romanic or neoromanic church
2. Best gothic or neogothic church
3. Best baroque or classicist church
4. Best byzantine or neobyzantine church...

and also to add : Best synagogue

The rules are what we got a lot of complaints about... and it took some time to remove all of the people who never voted properly. I haven't talked with Sergei in a while... and I'm not sure when/if we'll do it again. Personally I think there needs to be a bit of time still... lot's of development is ongoing in the area, and so it would be nice to let this current rush of construction finish up before we start anew... besides, you can't really redo the more classical threads like city squares, churches, etc... youd have the same winners, as nothing has been built to match what is already present.

MetroGuardian
July 6th, 2007, 10:26 AM
The rules are always a problem because they define the biases. The specific rules were trying to eliminate any specific advantages. They weren't perfect, but if they were meant to be, the complexity would be so high that maintenance and counting would become virtually impossible. They were pretty neat for a forum.
We could start a discussion about this.

I am not sure that if we were running the polls again we would get the same results. Because things don't change so fast but people's perceptions and aesthetics are constantly changing. But, not doubt, for some categories they would be initially similar. Still, there are a lot of new categories than can discussed. E.g. Best buildings for architectural styles:
-modernism
-art deco
-Bauhaus...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Architectural_style
Or stranger categories like: megaprojects/factories/stock exchanges...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_building_types
I find all these useful not because it is fun to watch the polls and subsequent discussion (which it is) but because I see so many places I didn't know they existed and I want to visit them. I will take the whole list with me when I'll go on a EE trip.
