Galata Tower (Christea Turris): Built by the Genoese Italians and completed in 1348, this Romanesque style tower is 67m tall and has 11 habitable floors:

History buffs will immediately recognize the year 1348:

Year of the Black Death (Great Plague)

The Black Death first appeared in Russia in 1347, then arrived at Constantinople (Istanbul) in 1348 (the year in which Galata Tower was completed) through merchant ships operating on the Black Sea, and from Constantinople went first to Venice (again through mice on merchant ships) and from Venice/Veneto region was dispersed to the rest of western Europe.

By the end of 1348, most of Europe was infected with the disease, which wiped away 2/3 of the continent's entire population.

Something interesting was discovered recently:

The descendants of the 1/3 who survived the 1348 plague have a modified gene which prevents them from being infected by the HIV (AIDS) virus (their bodies are HIV-proof)
