I guess we can discuss the monorail project here. :)

^^ Scale model of the DOST Monorail found in SMX convention.

ALL FILIPINO MONORAIL STARTS IN UP

THE government contractor that was commissioned to build the guideway for the country’s first all-Filipino monorail has already starting work on the P21.6-million automated guideway transit system that will be tested before the end of the year.

The contractor, Miescor Builders Inc., started diggings for the elevated test tracks a week before the ceremonial awarding rites at Manila Traders Hotel on Tuesday. The monorail is a project of the Department of Science and Technology.

Engineer Jonathan Puerto of the DOST’s Metals Industry Research and Development Center said the test track is being built at an empty lot in the University of the Philippines campus in Diliman, Quezon City.

“We expect to finish the construction within four or five months, or by October or November, then we can have the actual tests using the coaches,” said Puerto, stressing that the tests are necessary to finetune the system’s mechanisms and operation, including speed, stability, brake distance and power, among others.

Science and Technology Secretary Mario Montejo said the AGTS is the first of several high-impact technology solutions that is being developed by the department for the public transportation sector.

Montejo said many countries are already reaping benefits from their own AGTS technologies, including the United States, Japan, Singapore and Canada. “If these countries can do it, so can the Philippines,” the secretary said.

Montejo said the guideway of the monorail will stand at an elevation of 6.1 meters supported by high-quality concrete material, while the train body will be composed of two coaches, each capable of carrying 30 people.

The coaches will roll on rubber tires instead of metal wheels to minimize track noise, and will have bogies to ensure comfort and stability.

Aside from being locally developed, Montejo said the monorail is envisioned to be non-polluting, reliable and safe because it cannot be derailed or cause road accidents, aside from helping reduce traffic congestion.

Puerto said the 465-meter demonstration track will be at the largely vacant UP lot between the Commission on Higher Education building on C.P. Garcia Avenue and the College of Fine Arts on Emilio Jacinto Street.

After the pilot tests at UP, Puerto said the DOST will conduct other feasibility studies before the DOST alternative mass transport system goes public.

“We will also delve on the economies especially the cost efficiency of running the system, engineered by the DOST,” Puerto said, adding that the monorail will be much cheaper than light rail transits due to its components.

This is not redundant. All discussions regarding the UP Monorail demonstration project should remain here, not in the MRT/LRT thread, which seemed to have been renamed Metro Manila Rapid Transit thread (in which case, the BRT discussions for Ayala Ave, BGC, etc. should be merged there then dahil Metro Manila Rapid Transit din sila... :| )

Baby steps to self reliance regarding train technology I hope!

From an article:

http://goquezoncity.ph/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mono_ss.jpg

By Anna Valmero
QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA—A locally developed monorail system, which will be tested at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, is being eyed as a cheaper and safer alternative for mass transport in the country over the next few years.
Dubbed as the Automated Guideway Transit (AGT), the monorail system, to be developed the Department of Science and Technology (DoST), will ply the southern part of the UP Diliman campus in five to nine months, according to DoST chief Mario Montejo.
“The AGT is the future of cheap mass transport system. The train will include a pair of sixty-passenger coaches that will run along a 500-meter track inside the UP campus,” said Montejo, during the groundbreaking rites of the AGT site at the corners of Jacinto and Lakandula streets in UP Diliman.
Based on international studies, the monorail system is the “most cost-effective and less intrusive” mass transport for commuting countries like the Philippines, the DoST chief said.
“By locally developing the system, we would cut down costs to only 25 percent. For the UP monorail, we are allocating around P20 million,” Montejo said. The budget will include the building of the 500-meter long elevated track and the AGT train, at P16 million and P4 million, respectively.
As its name implies, the monorail will run on a single rail as its sole support and guideway and it will be powered by batteries and direct current. The DoST assures this project will not harm the environment nor trees will be cut at the UP Diliman campus.
Alongside the development of the AGT and throughout its trial running period at UP Diliman, feasibility studies will be conducted on the cost efficiency of running the system and its impact on commuters' behavior as well as the livelihood of campus jeepney drivers, said UP president Alfredo Pascual.
“Our long-term plan (for UP campus) is to allow electric vehicles as alternative mass transport to the monorail system as a means to prevent air pollution,” Pascual said.
Mechanical engineers and and software developers from UP will help to monitor and improve train operations and help expand the monorail to two kilometers.
“The monorail in UP will have a speed of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour similar to the MRT along Edsa. With the feasibility studies, we will also look into increasing its speeds by up to 100 to 120 km per hour,” added Montejo.
Montejo said it is up to the UP administration if it will charge a fare for commuters riding the monorail system.

Di hamak mura talaga financing dito sa Monorails.. Bear in mind these good only for passengers not for cargoe and heavy cargo hauling.

This UP Monorail Test Track will determine how much investment (the cheapest) we can give to provide descent ride to passengers considering most of the infrastructures including the cars are to be locally manufactured, that's a lot of savings than purchasing and importing coaches from other countries.

Sounds very promising. Maybe they can start with monorails in Manila feeding into the larger LRT stations.

Then hopefully, they can further develop a high speed monorail, connect MNL to CRK, on the median of NLEX and SCTEX. That would be amazing.

It would be usefull if we could get a concrete project brief on this. I read about this before and was not exactly sure what the brouhaha was about. UP made it seem like it was ground breaking technology perhaps someone can educated us on why this is so.
I also see the scale of the project but am not sure where the first phase is , is it from Jollibee to Quezon Hall area?
Anyway it's good to see UP put up this initiative to showcase their capabilities and perhaps alternative solutions for mass transit.

Akala ko for mass transport ang UP AGTS?

So, this AGT monorail will be for the NAIA- Bonifacio Global City-MRT (Guadalupe Station) link connection?

Monorail feasibility study to be finished early 2013

THE FEASIBILITY study for the proposed monorail connecting the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and the Bonifacio Global City is expected to be finished early next year.
RELATED STORIES

Homegrown monorail to be tested in UP

“The feasibility study is ongoing and we expect this to be finished by the first quarter of 2013,” said BCDA President Arnel Paciano D. Cassanova in a text message to reporters yesterday.

The project itself is targeted for a 2016 launching.

Results of the feasibility study will be submitted to the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) Board. It should also be approved by the President.

Mr. Cassanova said the study, aimed at determining the mechanism and funding for the project, commenced in September.

Japan’s Ministry for Economy, Transportation and Industry gave a grant of “around $500,000” on Aug. 14, Mr. Cassanova said, to finance the feasibility study being conducted by two Japanese firms, Oriental Consultants and the Nomura Group. “If found feasible, our target is still 2016 for the project,” Mr. Cassanova added.

The 12.56-kilometer monorail will run from NAIA Terminal 3 to the Metro Rail Transit Line 3’s Guadalupe station via the Bonifacio Global City.

BCDA is the agency in charge of developing former military camps and bases in the country.

The agency said the monorail will help ease the commute to and from NAIA to the Bonifacio Global City as well as increase the number of people working in the latter area. -- E. N. J. David

^^ Hindi ko naman sinabing at all times pero ang rubber tires, umiinit yan and at some point, lumiliyab. :-D

Rubber tires heat up either from the heat generated by the bearings and the brake pads/discs plus the air molecules banging against each other inside the tires as the wheels roll. If the filling fluid is nitrogen, you will do away with wide swings in tire pressure and lesser generation of heat from the gas. Racers and aircraft tires are using nitrogen to avail of the desirable qualities of that gas.

Rubber tyres are not uncommon in mass transit systems.

Paris, Santiago, Sapporo, Mexico City, Montreal, Madrid all using rubber tyred rail vehicles. Taipei also have some lines using rubber tyred rail vehicles as well. Macau, coming soon.

In the case of our monorail in KL, the guidance tyre is filled with nitrogen.

Singapore's LRT also uses rubber tires

^^ Hindi ko naman sinabing at all times pero ang rubber tires, umiinit yan and at some point, lumiliyab. :-D

i think. eto ung pinagbabasehan sa UP Monorail

rubber tires of Sapporo Subway (Japan)

local built din ba yung train set??? i hope yes

me nakakita na nung train set look?? futuristic sana ang hitsura, wag mukang jeepney :lol::lol:

locally built, developed by DOST and UP Engineering, and UP Transpo Studies.

This is how it's gonna look like.

Have faith in your own country, hindi nyo pa nakikita, wag nyo namang pulaan- tayo din makikinabang nyan pag naging matagumpay.

ung litrato na yan ay UP Monorail(AGT). IMO mali ung background eh dapat UP Campus & Sunken Garden diba. Sa Ayala-BGC-NAIA T3 Monorail Project, Oriental Consultants & Nomura Group (Japan) are conducting the feasibility study & Hitachi Group are involving the Construction/O&M

I think the picture is just telling us the significance of the project...the possibilities...that we don't have to use the more expensive foreign models, such as Hitachi's model, if we can develop our own expertise/capabilities...and I believe we are getting close...

hi guys, I think it looks good. ^^^^

I hope they speed up the development. Then implement the first proven model and continue to make revisions on follow-on models. This type of activity is way to go for the government and private sector.
