Matina IT Park to rise in Maa

By Antonio L. Colina IV
Wednesday, August 1, 2012

THE biggest information technology (IT) park in Mindanao will soon rise along Maa Road, Davao City to accommodate more players from the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector.

Jason Magnaye, Davao City Investment and Promotion Center (DCIPC) chief, said the Matina IT Park will be composed of three buildings with four floors each building.

Magnaye said the first building will nestle in a 3,000-square-meter lot will have its groundbreaking ceremony slated in the last quarter of the year.

He said the project cost for the first building is estimated to be around P100 million.

For the second phase, the building will rise in a 2,000-square-meter lot while the third phase will have a total of 1,500 square meters.

Magnaye said another multinational firm has decided to locate its contact center facility in the city.

"They have already decided in Davao but they are still looking for a possible place," Magnaye said.

The company is looking at either Abreeza Ayala Malls or SM City Davao, two Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza) accredited areas.

Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII) president Dr. Maria Lourdes Monteverde earlier urged the City Government of Davao through the local lawmaking body to endorse to Congress the creation of the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT).

Monteverde said the endorsement of the City Council will strengthen their stance toward the passage of the DICT Bill as among the top areas for BPO locators in the country.

"Due to strong voice of ICT community of the Philippines progress is slowly being made in the House of Representatives with the DICT Bill passing its third and final reading in the Senate last February 2012," Monteverde said in her speech during the 10th Davao City Business Conference last week.

However, she said the country's executive department relegated the ICT as part of the Department of Science and Industry (DOST).

Monteverde said the Philippine ICT Community signed in June, this year a joint statement declaring its strong support for the having ICT as part of the cabinet secretaries.

Davao primed to be world’s largest IT park
http://www.edgedavao.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7337:davao-primed-to-be-worlds-largest-it-park&catid=68:the-big-news&Itemid=94

Davao City will be projected as the world’s largest IT park as it will be the hub itself, Bert Barriga, president of ICT Davao said last Monday.

Guesting at the Kapehan sa Dabaw, SM City Davao, he said IT areas can be spread out in the city such that a business process outsourcing (BPO) locator can put up its business in Toril District or Buhangin where there are good infrastructures.

ICT Davao is promoting four IT areas in the city---Damosa IT Park, Matina IT Park, SM City Davao and Abreeza Mall.

3 IT firms eye to locate in the city
http://www.mindanaotimes.net/3-it-firms-eye-to-locate-in-the-city/

Three multinational business process outsourcing companies are planning to locate soon in malls in the city.

Erriberto P. Barriga Jr., executive vice president of ICT-Davao, said on Monday during the press forum at Cafe Rysus in SM City Davao that of the three companies, two firms eyed to locate in SM Annex while the other one planned to be in the soon-to-open BPO tower at Abreeza.

Two of those companies are considered as among the biggest in the industry in the world.

“More than 2,000 jobs are expected to be generated once the plan of the three companies finally pushes through,” he said. One of the firms alone is planning to hire about 1,000 call center agents.

The soon-to-open seven-storey BPO tower in the 10-hectare mixed-used development Abreeza project is intended to allocate spaces especially to BPO companies. It is currently being constructed in front of Redemptorist Church.

The SM Annex or ICT center in SM City Davao along Quimpo Boulevard has an area of 49,000 square meters. It has floors for retail establishments, cyberzone and venue for various offices, business process outsourcing firms and marketing event center.

Other BPO firms can also locate at the information technology parks like Damosa I.T. Park and the soon-to-open Matina I.T. Park.

I hope they start and finish this project as soon as possible, we sure would want to get the best and most well-known outsourcing companies now that what's hindering them from expanding has already been resolved by the US Senate by voting against the anti-outsourcing bill. And we also don't want to be left out by other cities especially those from the visayas where the IT infrastructure are in place and all ready.

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine business process outsourcing industry breathed a sigh of relief as the US Senate rejected the so-called "Bring Jobs Home Act."

The bill, which would have elimated existing tax breaks for US firms that ship jobs to other countries, was blocked by Republicans at the US Senate. This despite President Barack Obama's earlier push for legislation that would encourage companies to bring back jobs to the US.

"Outsourcing business services to the Philippines helps make American companies more competitive and profitable. Profitable companies hire more workers, both here, and in the United States," Benedict Hernandez, Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) president and CEO, said, in a statement.

BPAP cited a study showing that outsourcing does not have an impact on job losses in the US.

"Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business economist Matthew Slaughter, in a study of the hiring practices of 2,500 US multinationals, found that for every job outsourced, nearly two new jobs are created in the US," Hernandez said.

As the US unemployment rate remains high and its economy continues to sputter, some sectors have blamed American companies for outsourcing jobs to countries like the Philippines.

Many American firms have outsourced call center services to the Philippines and India in recent years, since wages here are much lower than in the US.

However, Slaughter's study showed that American jobs created by subsidiaries of foreign multinationals almost doubled over a generation, employing 5.4 million US workers.

"Outsourcing is a win-win proposition, and we’re glad to see that both Philippine and American companies and our respective workers will continue to benefit from the opportunities it provides," Hernandez said.

The Philippines' IT-BPO industry generated more than $11 billion in revenue and employed almost 640,000 Filipinos in 2011. The industry is expected to grow to $25 billion in annual revenue and employ 1.3 million by 2016.

ICT park to be set up: city gov’t official

http://www.mindanaotimes.net/ict-park-to-be-set-up-city-govt-official/

An information and technology park is set to be established in MacArthur Highway, Matina this year.Jason C. Magnaye, head of Davao City Investment and Promotions Center (DCIPC), said the project dubbed, Matina IT Park, will be established near NCCC Mall in MacArthur Highway, Matina. At least three buildings, all with four floors, will be constructed at the park.

The Matina IT Park is a project of Plaza de Luisa Development Inc.

“It is mainly for business process outsourcing firms,” Magnaye said.

Jason P. Huang, managing director of Plaza de Luisa Development Inc., said the project is for commercial and contact center purposes. “Also, included in the development are ample parking areas to accommodate tenants and its corresponding customers and greening of designated open areas,” he said.

IMO, Matina has the biggest potential for the creation of properly planned business centers/communities. The only challenge is fast connectivity to the city's airport and downtown areas.

I think its time the city revive it's LRT/BRT plans plus spend more on infrastructure.

Davao hopes to attain BPO target
http://www.pia.gov.ph/news/index.php?article=1541348472488

ICT Davao an umbrella group of IT players in the city has pegged a target of 30,000 workers in the business process outsourcing industry by 2016. Currently BPO workers in Davao City is estimated at about 16,000.

Wit Holganza, ICT Davao president said that last 2011 they registered a 26% increase in ICT workers in the city; they are expecting 30% more workers by 2012.

Following last year’s inventory of 52,000 square meters of office space available for IT/BPO companies, it is expected to surge up to 100,000 square meters with new IT parks and buildings being built.
'
Among these IT spaces include the Matina IT Park, the Enterprise IT center, Felcris and the Lanang IT Park. "For now it is enough for present needs,” Barriga said of the current space inventory.

if we want to be as competitive as the other city with regards to the avialability of bpo facility/infrastructure, we must push through with this IT project.

this will enhance our competitiveness together with our existing bpo facilities: robinson cybergate, sutherland, damosa, ayala technopod and the upcoming Felcris Centrale.
